Subject: PETA asks GW to ban Fur from Warhammer characters
Yeah, I think PETA were hoping for free publicity for themselves, but I'm rather hoping that GW will get more publicity out of it, especially given the generally satirical response.

The Web was just going 2.0, and some enterprising idiots decide a holocaust themed AR campaign is exactly what Germany needed.
The last image dates it in 2005 but I did not mistype earlier. This campaign ran for quite a while.
It pisses everyone off, the "if ya really think about it crowd" gets turned off by all the anger, and PETA gets a couple of bucks and more volunteers for having their heart in the right place. Not too unlike how Trump pulled out his win.
Anyway, not to dwell. I'm pretty sure Germany forgave PETA after their next ad campaign.
They're like the Westboro baptists of animal welfare, if the Westboro baptists secretly engaged in homosexual orgies.

In all honesty though, people who never heard about 40k are hearing about 40k, so free publicity, right?
I'd argue it's even better than that, given the wider timing.
GW have made a few headlines in the UK given their recent financials being better than expected (such things are getting closer attention in the press due to Brexit).
And as Nerds, we know that 40k's story is advancing.
And being a Long Time Nerd, I must know dozens, if not hundreds of people who used to play, but moved on (no, not always rules rules rules. More commonly 'got married/had a kid/job moved/discovered wimmins and alcohols/went travelling'. That's a lot of people who might see this lunacy by PETA and think 'cor, I used to play that. Wonder what it looks like now?'. It's not going to take a great many getting hooked again to give GW an unexpected boost
Spesh those who did the kiddywink route about 10 years ago....their sprogs might be even moar new blood brought in if Dad picks it up.

In the pursuit of victory and survival, and in the name of the Holy Emperor of Mankind, you will – of course – be required to engage in deadly combat with terrifying foes that may well be trying to flay you alive, but that’s no excuse to stoop to their level. When engaging such foes, you are permitted to undertake the following actions:
Shoot the foe. This is not limited to a single las blast or round. You may continue shooting the foe until long after he has fallen, blasting apart his body until nothing remains to threaten the sanctity of the Imperium.
Cut the foe. This can take the form of a stabbing or slashing motion. You may use knives, swords and other implements to remove limbs and maim. You may even impale the foe’s body on a polearm as a warning to others of the fate that awaits them should they stray from the Emperor’s path.
Crush the foe. Whether under the iron might of a Leman Russ battle tank or the bludgeoning blows of a rock, you may mash the foe’s bones and beat him to a bloody pulp.
What you may NOT do is wear any part of the foe. Not even if they are vicious Clawed Fiends, deadly Khymerae, or ferocious Squigs.
Fething hilarious!

That was a great response from GW. If you call it a response..
PETA likes to rain on everyone's parade and make you depressed. I think they get more enjoyment out of showing animal torture videos and making everyone sad rather than telling people about animal abuse and what to do when seeing it.

It was fun. I'm still saddened by all the geeks that went full “PETA is attacking 40k” or “PETA is offended by fur on miniatures” when the reality is simply “PETA is trying to use yet another bait to make you read their usual IRL defense on why fur is bad (and doesn't actually give a damn about fur in miniatures or GW)”, though. Please stop being so thin-skinned and get able to understand things :(.

Gaming (tabletop, minis, video) skews young, often passionate, and to an extent immature. It's no surprise that their admitted trolling got them the reaction that they were after.
Here's the follow-up for anyone who doesn't want to give them the clicks:

We’re laughing, too! For the cost of a postage stamp, our website has received record traffic – and the people who were prompted to visit our site by this story can’t have missed the prominently featured eyewitness footage showing that animals in real life are electrocuted, drowned, and sometimes even skinned alive for their fur.
Here’s a little secret: we know that Warhammer characters are fictional, and we’re not losing sleep worrying about what Leman Russ or the other miniatures are “wearing”. We are, however, lying awake at night thinking of ways to make people aware that real animals who are raised for their fur, skin, or flesh are suffering every day. We’ll sleep a little more easily tonight knowing that we’ve managed to get nearly a quarter of a million people (and counting!) to visit PETA.org.uk in the days since we sent our letter, because – whatever their reason for doing so – they’ll now know more about the cruelty behind fur.
So by all means, have a laugh at this campaign – you can even laugh at us – but please remember that the fur industry is a living hell for animals. If that bothers you, and it should, please share our fur exposés with your friends and family.
Isn't this the same PETA who kills dogs and cats because they don't want to take care of them? Hypocrisy much?
Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.
Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

If that is their true aim, maybe a more tongue in cheek approach would have garnered a more positive response from us. They could have easily saved this for April fools and it would have still got a tonne of publicity, and we would have all probably thought a little more of them for it.
But in doing trolly campaigns like this they may get traffic, but they undermine themselves.

They've closed the comments on that post, disallowing further discourse. I get the sense that in spite of their claim that they were simply trolling to highlight a more serious issue, inwardly they know they dun goofed and made themselves look like lunatics. And by they, I mean Dan Howe.

Does anyone want to go to Fenris and hunt down a giant wolf pelt coat with me?
Unleash the hounds!
At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

They seriously believe that it's better for animals to be killed than to live their lives as pets. It makes me sick.
For that I will never be able to take PETA seriously, and I don't give them the attention or clicks they want, either. I saw the news trending on Facebook, shook my head and kept going. I'll start believing that they give a gak about the treatment of animals as soon as they stop kidnapping* and murdering them.

Called it. It was just so OBVIOUS.

Always love how people who totally aren't xenophobes think halal meat is the worst animal abuse issue and the only one they care about. I genuinely support animal defense groups that do include this in their fights, and I genuinely despise people that pretends to care about animals well-being when speaking of halal meat and yet gorge themselves on foie gras. But I trust you ain't one of those people.

It tickles me every time someone posts in this thread to point out how other people are being sooo stupid and giving PETA the free advertising that they want.
...and the thread bounces back up the index page and the view counter dial spins some more. Hahaha!
