That's glorious.... a perfect fit for your paint palette and build scheme. Any sense that you'll do half a dozen pieces for actual gameplay, or just the diorama?

Thank you guys!
I'm going to make a whole army... At least 60 infantry, Scions, Crusaders, maybe Bullgryns, some mortar teams, Basilisks, Tauroxes and finally one or two imperial knights and maybe a mobile fortress on a Baneblade.
I've got lots of ideas...

Made a big step this weekend!
I finished the Company Commanders and the first 10 Infantry models!

Tomorrow I will try to take some cool photos with the scenery I made. Tonight I'm just showing how I paint the models of this army. Maybe someone will some day be interested in it and then he or she can find it here. As I said before this procedure is supposed to be a quick paintjob as I want to concentrate on building models and painting is not really my favourite part of the hobby... I guess the dirty and heavy weathered style works nicely, but it still takes longer than expected

Step 1: Base colours

I work with a really little palette. My main paints are GW Stormvermin Fur and Vallejo Stone Grey. I mix a little bit of them into almost every colour to make them match. Even the skin is a mix of Kislev Flesh, Stone Grey and Stormvermin Fur. All parts that are supposed to be white or bone-coloured are painted with Stone Grey. As pale brown tones I use mixes with Baneblade brown and Dryad Bark. My favourite bronze tone is Vallejo Tinny Tin, as this is not as saturated as the GW paints. And that's it more or less...

Step 2: Washing and dry brushing

Washing the whole model with Agrax Earthshade except the bronze, which is washed with Nuln Oil. Beneath the eyes I place a little bit of Druchii Violet. Then I drybrush the model with Vallejo Stone Grey...

Step 3: Weathering and details

I brush all steel and iron parts with different reddish rust pigment. Around the feet I add some sandy coloured pigments. The pigments are from Vallejo and I fix them with a pigment fixer from AMMO by Mig Jimenez. The bronze parts get some Nihilakh Oxide which I thin with water. If the oxide is too green or the rust is too red I tone the colours down again with Agrax Earthshade. And then I just underline some details, like the rim of the hat, the orange reflection on the lenses or some silver highlights.

Finished!

Hello,

This is totally amazing.

I have a question... how many of your parts/bits are actually Games Workshop? Do you get bits from other places? I sometimes think I can spot some Victoria Miniatures in there, but not sure. Could you provide a rough breakdown of any non GW suppliers you might use for bits, please?

I've started collecting bits for a Knights based crusader/medieval army based on an agriworld, so less of the dust but still going to be a bit of a mix. I was thinking of using more cuirass style armour for the bodies, say from Victoria Minis or Anvil Industries.

On a side, there are some good heads out there for Imperial Guard. I think the ones at puppetswar work well as they have mohawks, long hair, cyber skulls etc.

Thanks again!
@TarkinLarson: Almost every part is from GW, except the heads of the infantry (Maxmini) and there are one or two arms from a 3rd party manufacturer (the ones with the rolled up sleeves). I forgot which company it was. Probably Anvil Industry. But I think I won't use them anymore. It's much work to change the rifle arms just for an infantry guy.
I'm going to add some knights too! Ordered some Armigers yesterday for the first 1000p matches. I'm really looking forward to convert them.
Concerning the heads: I have some Crusader Knights heads from Puppetswar and they are unfortunately far too small for the crusaders I made So order some samples first before you order the heads for a whole army!

Definitely worth building that backdrop, Those are some lovely shots.

Just a little update whiile I wait for new bits...

I've finished building my Taurox.

And I started making a Kill Team. The first two minis are finished.
This is my Scions heavy weapons specialist with his customised hot-shot volley gun. I tried to make him look like a stereotypical muscle man carrying a far too large gun.
"Backpacks are for girls. I need to be agile. Gimme that gun with the integrated energy cell from the truck over there."

And I made a sniper. As I want to make individual characters for my kill team the guardsmen of it won't wear their helmets.

Some new pictures..

I made a sniper specialist for my Kill Team. I'm really happy with this model, especially with his custom precision hot-shot volley gun.

And this is going to be the leader of my kill team:

And I reworked my crusaders. Honestly, I love the greatswords. I hope I can paint them like proper power swords...

People have been weirdly quiet in responding!

I love that Taurox, best I've seen from the kit. Kill Team is headed in great directions, high five for the quad volley gun loadout - so much dakka! - and the beastmen is particularly fun. Following you on on the 'Gram now, looking forward to paint and merhaps some game shots of the team in action

@Salvage: Yesterday I started paintiing the Taurox. Depending on how much time I can find I'll probably finish it this week. I hope so!
@SlaveToDarkness: Wow, the heads look really great.
@Commander Cain: Yeah, kitbashing is the best part of the hobby for me. I could never just build a model straight from the box. I love it to spend hours just with searching through my bitzbox for fitting parts.

Today I printed a sheet of decals I designed recently. With these I'm going to decorate all the shields. I imagine the line of Crusaders to look very cool with the heraldry on each shield.
First test object is the Taurox I'm currently building. I really like the look. But still one can see that it's a decal and not painted with a brush. So I'm gonna try to repaint the heraldry to achieve a uniform painted look...

Yesterday I received new heads for my Armiger Mini Knights so today I had to continue working on them. And now I've reached a point where I'm quite pleased with them.

I didn't really like the original design of the Armigers but I knew what I wanted to change. Especially the forward bend pose with the head on waist level reminded me more of a mutant dinosaur than a knight. It doesn't look like a heavy conversion but there are a few subtle changes:

- Open cockpit to show that they have a pilot and are not just robots
- Shortened torso front and back
- Position of the torso a little more upright
- Shoulders from plastic card to make the torso look broad instead of long and slim
- More knightly looking heads from https://www.etsy.com/shop/TaroModelmaker
- Slimmer hips
- I moved the Melta from the top to the side
- I made the jocks from a thigh armour plate
- A more dynamic pose in general

Here are some closeups of the new heads and the pilots:

And some photos that show the construction of the cockpit. The seat with the legs as well as the arms are from the Taurox gunner. On these pics you can also see where I cut the torso. I changed the pilots' heads afterwards to make them look as knightly as my crusaders.

I love the subtle modifications on the armigers. You really brought them much more in line with the rest of the knights. I'm not the biggest fan of open cockpits, but looking at the detail you built into them certainly is impressive. I absolutely love the overall silhouette you achieved. Fantastic stuff.

A completely fantastic thread with some many cool conversions -- I don't even know where to start!

For now, let me focus on your Armigers, because you've come up with such a cool setup for their cockpits! Very nice!

However, I just have to point out that I think those Bretonnian Knight helmets on the pilots are much inferior to the somewhat weatherbeaten everymen heads you had on there first: Not only does the idea of that huge helmet emerging from an open cockpit like that seem pretty ridiculous (even for the 40k setting), but I also think the previous look suited the actual function of the Armigers a lot better: They are not Knights, but men-at-arms and retainers to the actual Knights in their bigger mounts. Which is why I think those Empire heads were a much better fit.

In any case, fantastic work! I hope you'll forgive my quick intervention!
