I vote... orcs.

If that's true, I'll be interested to see how they compare to the Oathmark goblins.

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

The detail looks too fine to show up in scale. Hopefully they deepen the detail on the mail etc.

I will pass this comment along, although i do believe we try to make sure the details are as deep as necessary before we send them to engineering. As I'm not 100% sure though i will ask the rest of the team.

That 'mail' looks like chains just wrapped horizontally around the body. Not sure if that is intentional, to convey that this is crude, improvised armour, an early stage of sculpting which will get fixed later, an abstraction which will look OK on a real model, or just a sculpt made by someone who isn't very good at doing mail (which, to be fair, does seem to be difficult).

Also, those rivets are bothering me. Rivets on armour generally connect other parts like straps to the plate. The obvious elements to be connected with those rivets are the straps holding the plate pieces on, but the rivets don't line up with the straps.

Welp, I need those spiders. Just in time for me to make a Night Goblin-ish army for KoW. Wondering what the size difference is between the two types.

I reckon the new render is a barbarian, as I can see what looks like a beard on it.

I've noticed a few instances where it looks like the sculptor tried to 'show their work' with linking mail, and in the process had to blow it way up because we're talking about tiny figures just over an inch tall. Kind of reminds me of marking out every barb on a feather at this scale. (I still remember the splutters when the IoB griffon showed up) I can be impressed by tiny details on a mini but texture like this looks like makework that doesn't enhance the overall look. Rows of holes, with maybe a ruffled surface, would do fine.

Also, those rivets are bothering me. Rivets on armour generally connect other parts like straps to the plate. The obvious elements to be connected with those rivets are the straps holding the plate pieces on, but the rivets don't line up with the straps.

I can't unsee it now.

I see what looks like neck muscles on it.

In which case, I wonder how well all those subtle intertwining tendons and things would show up on a 28mm mini, too?

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

That torso seemed familiar, so I skimmed their page and found this halfling scale shot. I feel like I remember seeing an even clearer digital image of that orc/goblin but couldn't find it.

The wood elves have been shelved temporarily due to market changes

the large spiders will fit on a 50mm square, the smaller ones on a 25mm.

Yup. Swept under a carpet of greeble and detail in the finest fantasy mini tradition. I can see the benefits of digital sculpting for wee little gaming minis but, is it me, or is having the whole figure blown up and zoomed in on a monitor just too much temptation?

Ironed out and given a few good, judicious anatomical features would look better.

This is a bit of a cop out, IMHO.

I have one word for you: Verisimilitude.

No, goblins aren't real, but they are humanoid creatures. We know how humanoid creatures are built, and how they function.

Not to pile on. I really want some different goblins on the market. Some that look dangerous, not laughable. I hate GW's comedy Orcs and Goblins with a burning passion...

Also, why have the Wood Elves been shelved? Any idea? More elf choices would be awesome too.

This. Unless Goblins have a different skeletal structure you need muscles in roughly the same place to pull the bones.

Well I'll admit I was indulging in a bit of personal snark alongside my suggestions, and those were more about the sheer amount of textural detail, but thanks.

But on the topic of anatomy...

Thirded. Verisimilitude is one of my favourite twenty-dollar words, and if I had a quid for every time I've seen the "well show me the anatomy of [mythical creature]" argument, I wouldn't sneer at GW's prices so often.

'Fantasy' gives you more leeway, you don't have to conform exactly to real-life references, but like greebling it's not a free get-out-of-jail card. It's not about whether it's real, it's about whether it looks natural. I think the goblin's arms and legs are plugged in alright but I don't know why it's biceps is split in two and why the rest of it is covered in a strange, woody texture. I think the mail on those older WIPs looks better and I have no idea what on earth is going on with those trouser wrinkles. (Please don't ask me for a real-life example of goblin cloth) I wish the neck didn't look so long and skinny but that's a negligible complaint compared to the others.

And I worry a bit over how these are going to paint up. I have a feeling all that texture is not going to lend itself to easy painting, especially the way these are most likely to treated: dipped or washed. They're great techniques, but IMO they work best with flatter areas and deeper recesses to bring out gradients and contrast, respectively. Based on minis I've seem with textures similar to these - some historical plastics in particular, with loads of added subtle wrinkles - it's not going to create an effect of shadow, it's going to create a look of rolling about in mud.

Speaking to the actual pictures now, it does look to me like the sculptor is just bulking out the forms in zBrush and hasn't done any refining yet. Stuff can look pretty weird in that program if you aren't familiar with it. The material they are using isn't doing any favors either.

Personally, I would like to see Goblins (and Orcs) that don't have armor scraps pasted randomly about their bodies. Make the armor and weapons look more realistic (again, verisimilitude!) and less ramshackle. And for the love of all that is functional, put their heads on their shoulders and not growing out from their chests. Lol.

I third this, you can have crude weapons and armour that is not garbage, I mean historically look at the Flemish Goedendag, it's a bat with a metal cap and spike on the end. Nothing more fancy than that. It's crude, it's cheap, but it is a nasty and fully functional weapon. You can bat an armoured knight over the head with it and while he's disorientated stick him with the pointy bit. I imagine goblins and orcs using maybe more of a mix of armour, it being fully functional, but not really neat or matching. Becasue they don't care about neat and matching, it protects or is cast to the side.

3 sample figures built from the Les Grognards kit. My apologies for the horrid image quality, but that is the best my phone is capable of. From left to right in the first picture, WW1 French poilu, French Foreign Legion Sergeant in contemporary uniform, and French Foreign Legionaire in Hollywood 19th century uniform.

Compared to GW marines; regular on the left, Primaris Intercessor on the right.

Contemporary FFL Sergeant: Sergeants & senior corporals of more than 15 years service wear a black kepi with a red top.

19th C Hollywood Legionaire (historically the trousers were red, not white).

Great War French poilu The helmet should have been the same horizon blue as the rest of the uniform, but I have a metallic blue paint I like to use whenever I can.

While I knew about the bearskins, I did not expect the fusiler shakos. So one can build four types of troops with this kit.

The Les Grognards kit is a good one.

I've built 55 as Bearskin wearers but they are painted up as not-Vostroyans.

The others from the three boxes I bought plus the six I picked up as preview freebies are waiting to be built.

I'm considering building them as kepi wearing Foreign Legion or holding on for the heavy weapons to be released so I can build them as supplementary crew.

Les Grognards have stoked my anticipation for the Space Brits.
