DJ, I missed your weathered billboards... I think they look great! I don't know if they need anything... but if you're not satisfied, maybe one or two busted struts, or maybe thin lines of black or Agrax running down from imaginary nail heads? I don't know... they're awesome as-is.

Neotericity, I dig your medical servitor! Just last night I made the decision to get into my Bellisarius Cawl sprue and do something similar... I'm not sure if it'll be freestanding like yours or hanging upside down from a gantry. But that chainsword beats anything I've found in my bits box! Also loving the observation dome. Keep up the good work and frequent updates!

Nice work guys. Lovin' DJ's workbench top, a former door. Bonus points if you used the hole for the doorknob as the place to clamp your articulated lamp, if you have one. I cannot see from the photos.

@ Red Harvest - Yes, I did. I have a few more pictures of the full bench on my P&M blog.

Great looking starts, everyone.

@Arakasi - Looks like a good pile of stuff.

@Neotericity - A chainsword-wielding, hydraulic-mounted robot is exactly what I would want performing surgery!

@MacPhail - The cots look good. As to the billboards, I don't think I'll do busted struts. The powers that be at Gaslands would want to ensure that their advertising space was well maintained, even if nothing else in the arena was. Some drip marks from nailheads is a good idea. Though, I think it would be more in line with the core values of the league if I first built tiny nail heads, and then made them dripping.

Speaking of which:
Here are some tiny details on another piece. I have been individually wrapping pieces of floral wire around another piece of floral wire to make barbed wire for various pieces on my table.

I know they're not rivets, but they represent similar attention to minute detail.

I made some good headway on laying out interior walls for my medical station. Here's an idea of what's coming together, with more pics over at my plog.

Nice start all.

Like that medical servitor Neo, nice use of bits.

Look forward to seeing the Dok's mobile klinik come together Arakasi.

Jazzy - for The barbed wire did you do each barb separately? It can be easier to use one long piece for each barb, leaving a short loop between each which you cut off later. Less hassle to put together, but does leave you with !it's of short pieces of wire after cleaning up, so swings and roundabouts...

The gears of the dark mechanicus move slowly, but they move...

For now, shelved the idea of an actual complex and building a few individual pieces - always a chance to base them all together later if I want.

My favourite CD basing - here covered in a square textured plasticard sheet as I figured I didn't want it to all be treadplate (although there may be some). Took a chunk out of a small Pringles can and inserted a piece roughly chipped from a plastic test-tube type container - roughly chipped as it's too big for my pipe-cutter and I appear to have misplaced my saw blades. This will eventually become a central pillar with embedded bio-tank.

One textured disc and one matching plain disc - slightly bigger than the Pringles top. These will be stuck together for strength. The ring and the other plain disc are a bit bigger than the first two - one will be the bottom layer, with the ring providing a border for the main disc.

Then cut out a few matching lengths of plain and textured for 'walkways', the plain with one end shaped to match the previous disc - the textured layer was then cut to match.

The discs are glued, followed by three walkway sections - switched a few times between 2, 3 or 4 before deciding.

And the border section in place.

Smaller bio-tank created with part of an arm, some wire, a leman russ road wheel and a bit of the tube W&N brushes are shipped in. Thin plastics strips will be used to tidy up the edges.

And a spherical tank - 2 hemispheres, with a strip on the inner and outer surface of one - this allows the other half to clip into place, plus provides an area to paint so that looking across the sphere doesn't show the unpainted surfaces where bits have been glued.

Monkeytroll, I love your biotank! I'm always wary of clear plastic anything because it's so unforgiving when it comes to glue and paint, but I'm excited for what you're going to pull off there. Another nod to your platform, that's a very cool layout.

Here's last night's work: the walls are mostly ready for paint. More details over at my blog.

Hi all,

Generally just stalk these forums, but figured with the extra time I could actually do one of these.

I want to make a medic tent area, that can be used as an objective. I'm going to restrict myself to only using materials I can find around my condo, and I want it to fit into the demolished urban 40K theme I'm trying to build some other terrain around. (However, I have a few things in the mail that might find their way into the piece.)

To start you'll see most of the materials I'm going to attempt to use. Most people online suggest tissue or baby wipes to replicate a tent canvas. I'm going to try using the used dryer sheet in the photo. I've put together the foam base, and will try to build out and finalize the tent part this week. I'm still trying to conceptualize what the rest of the scene will be, as I want this to be more than just a tent. I want it to be ambitious, without getting too difficult to prevent me from finishing on time.

Welcome, 416_SpaceWolves! I suspect you're onto something with that dryer sheet. Are you going to stiffen it with PVA or something similar? It sure seems like the right texture. I need to decide if I'm going to try doing bedding for my cots, and fabric is a little intimidating. I like the shape of the tent, and you've got plenty of space left to work with... maybe barrels, crates, sandbags, some sort of fencing? Great start!

Update on last night's progress... basecoating is done and some paint has begun, but this project is about to take a back seat to the monthly painting contest. Here's a dryfit of most of the wall and floor components:

I attempted PVA with the dryer sheet. Wasn't quite the consistency or the look I thought it would turn out to be. I defaulted back to the standard I've seen elsewhere on the internet (paper towel with watered down PVA to make a quasi paper mache). I can see why that's the norm. It was my first attempt at anything like this and wasn't tooo difficult, I'd recommend you try experimenting with it for your bedding.

I've conceptualized something similar to what you've described for the scene around the tent, but I'll keep that a secret until I post it!

Some great work everyone.

416_SpaceWolves you're in.

As an alternative to dryer sheets with PVA - if you can track some down of course...dried baby wipes do really well with PVA added and held on place with some superglue on the inside or straps on the outside to match contours beneath.

Cheers,

CB

Quick Update- finished the medical tent, and am building out the base. I want to keep the two separate, as they could be used individually or together.

Hate to be the next post after my last one, but I’ve finished the base of this. I’ve kept the tent separate, for some
Modularity. (I can use the base to display models beyond the tent).

I need to figure out what finishing touches to make to this to really bring it to LOER standards. I also need to decide what to do to the water feature I’ve attempted to do.

C&C welcome!

My plan is to make a whole table worth of stuff, which I've mentioned. To that end, I'm working on some mountainous/rocky terrain chunks. Many of them I carved before, but have just primed them. I hope it's cool to slap them into the competition. I figure if I finish the paint and texture during the competition it will work. I have enough other pieces that I'm scratch building during the timeframe that I'm hoping it all balances out.

I found a smashed-up toy helicopter half-buried in the dirt underneath a bush I was trimming in my yard. That will be a wreck on the board somewhere. I'm also working on a LED-lit burning ambulance wreck.

Just remember DJJazzyJeff, that your final entry is one, single piece of terrain (so select the one that best fits the theme from your multiple builds). Feel free to share your table filling builds as you progress.

Lots of great work being posted, we are almost two thirds of the way through the competition now, so those who have been procastinating it is time to get at it.

Cheers,

Oh, boy... home stretch here, folks. No photos to show, but there is progress. I may have to skip this month's painting contest to get my entry in for this one. Last month's painting contest entry went right to the deadline, followed by a socially distanced family campout for the holiday, and suddenly the month is flying by! I still have to build a medical servitor, paint most of the interior, and assemble the thing, including the wiring for the lights. Plus I decided I wanted to do the exterior for this building at the same time as two others (no interiors on those, just doors and a few details)... so I've got a bunch of cardboard boxes to prep and paint. I've got to get moving!

How is everyone else doing?

I am stumped on how to “finish” my piece to make it a real showstopper.

Had some great progress to get it to be playable on a tabletop, but am now unsure how to make it !pop!

Maybe barbed wire or tank spikes? Does anyone have any ideas??

416, your last pics looked great. The structure itself looks really good... maybe a drybrush and wash there? Do you have three levels to work with in terms of elevation? That liquid-filled trench looks great... I'd work with building up a ditch to bring that effect all the way down the board, or have it disappear near the edge. Some kind of bog, maybe... it seems like you have a lot of real estate to work with up front, I'd be drawn to going big on the terrain in the foreground. Mud, rock, grass, logs?

I agree. I think it needs some weathering. Debating trying to make that trench full of some greenish ooze instead of just muddy water...

You're right. I think some WW1 battlefield style destruction would look great on the other half.

Making progress... the doors from the Maelstrom's Edge sprue are getting paint, as are a few more bits of the interior. I cut enough boxes for three buildings and got them painted, so the doors are ready to assemble. More pics on my blog, including an attempt at draping fabric with paper towel and PVA glue.

Will try to make emergency soul harvester.

I have not seen good Drukari DE terrain, not in art not on tables.
Best inspiration I got is from Heroes 5 and DoW Soulstorm.
Even though I love both of those games, I am not feeling the architecture for the Drukari.

Will try come up with something more appropriate to the Druchi.

As much as I love the original DoW and it's standalone expansions, even I have to admit that the in-game models are severely limited by the technology of the time and project budget. Don't get me wrong, they looked amazing at the time for a video game, but they wouldn't hold a candle to high end table top scenery these days. They're good starter points for inspiration though. I'd highly suggest looking at the numerous examples of normal Eldar architecture as well as WFB Dark Elves architecture for further reference material. The Dark Eldar are literally the 40k extension of Fantasy's Dark Elves and share a good number of aesthetic themes with them. In addition, while they have long since been removed from their Craftworld kin, the Dark Eldar were once part of the same people and thus share a number of aesthetic choices in architecture. Just a lot more goth, metal, punk, and BDSM elements mixed in to show how edgy they are. That's why the Orks call them "Da Spikey Boyz."

Welcome aboard, Mothsniper! I like your foam craft... I think you're onto something with an iconic shape that you clone and replicate throughout the project. That plus a coherent paint scheme (purple and black, I'm guessing?) will unify everything even if you've got a bunch of different stuff going. Looks like a good start!

Original DoW is awesome, especially with mods. But the landscape is little more than a simple battle mat, yep
That is why any GW computer game must always be judged based on how well/poor the environment is done. Pro painted space-marine sitting on coffee table just looks like a toy, plastic army men sitting in pro made terrain turns a toy into an epic scene. Environment is the king!

I have looked into this a ton:
That is the first place I looked, How Elven or Eldar buildings will look in dark mode, what a WETA workshop elven terrain will look like for dark elfs, what skirym dark elf structure look like.
I am not satisfied with taking Eldar web-gate and putting spiky shapes and razor blades on it. It has to be more unique.

(sidenote - there are few things I dont find exiting form GW's dark elves, the architecture is not unique enough and cold-ones look like raptors)
Because classically dark elfs are ether underground in glowing mushroom environment, or in generic evil looking cities that are build by dwarven slave labor.
So,
Think of Starwars, even if it is an unfair comparison, just how many different styles of architecture each faction or race or planet has. That is what I want for Dark Eldar, the architecture that stands alone, and not just an evil version of something else seen before or generic spiky shapes.

Yes, lolz purple and black
Also, and bit of red/white for environment, I like the way bases turned out for the wyches recently finished, and will try to have them match the structure.

Good luck guys!

Plenty of amazing stuff since I've last been on. Wow, I'd better get rolling. I assembled and primed a whole mess of space marines, shouldn't have done that with a deadline looming.
Anyway, I have it narrowed down to one piece that I'll submit. One of my billboards and some wreckage and junk around it. Currently debating how many LED's I want in the thing. I'll try to post some pictures this weekend.

Good luck in the home stretch, everyone!
