It seems unlikely given that the necrons weren't in the 3e rulebook, and didn't get their codex until four years* after the start of 3rd.

3e crons also lacked the characteristic anti-technology rules of the 2e crons, and scarabs were complete opposites between the editions. I'm not sure how you would work backwards from what they were getting in 3rd to what they were in 2nd.

For 3e/3.5, what would be the most thematic list for my Squats? They're a Heavy Infantry Regiment, but they're light on armor and tube artillery.

I was thinking Cadian Shock Troops from EOT, as they can take Sharpshooters, have Iron Discipline, etc. But there are Regimental Doctrine options that look good, too.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.

Codex Tyranids has arrived! Probably one of my favourite 2nd Ed Codexes. Though to be fair, when it comes to pretty much anything 2nd Ed, I’m about as hard to please as a Labrador being shown a tennis ball.

Gonna have a damn good read!

The siege regiment (death korps) was first in Imperial Armour 5. It was released during 4e, but was built for the 3e guard book (they didn't have a 4e codex release).

Death riders can be themed as trikes, quad launchers were thudd guns. IA6 added the hades drill(workable as a termite), and engineers with mole mortars. Tarantulas were in IA 1.

3e Inquisitors and retinues/other units can be added from the WH or DH book for ancients, exo armour, etc, you can even get a landraider that way.

It's always been difficult fitting Squats into anything 3rd edition onwards without going too far off-piste and using house rules. I don't think a lot of Imperial Guard lists are fair, even though the flak armour is the same, they only have T3 and so die in droves. Which would probably look kind of funny in the game, but they shouldn't be that fragile. It also sits poorly having a dwarf that isn't T4!

It also leaves Exo Armour off the list, there isn't really anything that's a good sub.

Perhaps if you are just playing with mates, come up with a T4 surcharge for using the Imperial Guard lists (+ a few pts each perhaps?)

I remember that being an absolute bar-stuard of a codex. There was a lad at my local GW with a force, think I got tabled pretty much every time I played him (and viewed any occasion when I didn't get tabled as a moral victory, even though I had technically lost - usually a few aspect warriors running away from a stomping carnifex lol).

Genuinely?

Get hold of Imperial Armour 13.

Yes. It’s a Chaos Book. But the Lost and the Damned section is pretty much a Toolkit Army List. And I do have a copy.

It's also a 7th edition book, the gulf in power between it and 3e guard is vast.

I am now imagining Squats re-assembling themselves after getting gunned down (or guess it would show their tenacity and ability to get back up, something like that?)

If you really want to play Squats, go 2nd edition! The original rules had the army list, it's pretty basic but covers all of the miniatures that were released, and it would be easy to sub in Imperial Guard vehicles.

Or Epic Squats, I think that faction in Epic Space Marine (2nd edition) really nailed the concept of Squats as a faction with all of the cool war machines, they were far better developed than anything in the 28mm scale.

Also just found a complete set of 2nd Ed, Dark Millenium and various cardboard terrain pieces (including some Titan Legions) for £70 on eBay.

That's not bad! That has started going for some serious coin over recent years - I had managed to get hold of a copy of the book which was fairly cheap, but TBH it looks like it had been used for housing material in a gerbil's cage over the last twenty years.

What Titan Legions stuff did you get?

3rd Ed single Scarabs were pretty damn scary for tanks, too. They were just fast little meltabombs waiting to explode in your face.

Sick of my procurement posts yet?

Well tough titty! Here’s another!

Praise be and sing hosannas! Found a copy of Codex Sisters of Battle 2nd Ed for a comparatively tiny £39, posted.

Given the others ranged £70-£120, I was on that like flames on a heretic,

Now just Space Woofs, Orks and Angels of Death to go.

And….yes. So much for “I’ll buy one a month”…

Must find shelf space for them soon.

No problem at all!

I am enjoying your purchases vicariously

if you are really struggling to find one or the other a post on some of the FB groups might be worth a punt. I was despondent about having to pay £13-14 for a single original terminator (basically one or two guys just seem to have bought all of the available stock and then just have them listed permanently at that price) but some people took pity on my on FB and I was able to get a much better deal - think if people know that you are a collector and not just trying to resell they are a lot more responsive!

At the moment it’s just looking for lower than average prices. I’ve got the ones I was most desperate for, so happy to bide my time on the others.

Because you never know when someone will Buy It Now for a lower price, probably because they don’t know what exactly it is they’re selling.

This thread has got me feeling the urge to buy old rulebooks that I can't really afford now.

Old for me is more third edition, but still. It's a growing temptation.

Woofs I want. Assassins I’m largely unfussed for. And no. I’ll get me own shelves, you get your own books!

In that order.

Late to the party (and I have many pages to catch up on), but I have many, MANY PDFs for Epic 2nd Ed, I think all I'm missing is the Titan Legions rulebook (and if anyone has a PDF they fancy sending me I'll be your friend FOREVER.

All the expansions, army cards and White Dwarf articles - mostly from 2nd Ed Space Marine FB groups being hugely generous. Hit me up if there's anything you need MDG, we're very comfortable in this particular rabbit hole ;-)

Oooooh! I’ll take PDFs of the WD articles. Other books I prefer to have the Real McCoy!

The problem is that I still use some of them. Like when someone starts asking about putting together a 2nd ed Eldar list I can grab my book off the shelf and help. I view myself as a living ancestor for the community, and a deep library helps with that.

The other issue is purely sentimental. Not just with the GW stuff, but other games on the shelf. I could box it up and store, or deal with figuring out the mechanics of selling it. But having it on the shelf is a touchstone for a happier time. Seeing those books and game boxes reminds me of the halcyon days of my youth, long past.

From a practical POV, most of it just takes up space and I should re-home it to someplace it would be more loved. But it would be like cutting off my link to the past for some of it. I could sit down and see which items “spark joy” and which are just there. But that would take time and emotional energy, which I don’t have.

So inertia wins, and stuff stays.
