I would get the Assault on Black reach box set. It includes the rules (Full rulebook, no fluff), a bunch of Orks and Marines.
It also has a great intro in the other booklet that comes with the box. You can get it from TheWarStore.com for cheap ( $60 + $6 shipping ) or locally of course.

I'll leave it to someone else to describe the basics. I'm horrible at it and don't want to type all that out.
Or you could read this and see if it answers your questions.

If you're looking for a game to be competitive in (like go to tournaments and stuff) then don't. The rules suck for anything but casual play.

The link Sinister Brain posted is a nice little introduction to the game and setting. If you have a little spare cash, the Assault on Black Reach starter box is a great way to get started (it's how I started, relatively recently).

It's a great value for the number of models that you get, as evidenced by its purchase by veteran gamers, as well as having literally everything that you need to get started, provided you have an opponent (you could, hypothetically, play yourself, but it's not nearly as fun ). AoBR is a solid investment if you're just starting out and won't be a large chunk of change wasted, should you decide not to pick up the hobby.

Also bear in mind that 40k is a pretty expansive hobby. You can learn the rules and mess around a bit then decide whether you want to go the casual route, playing with friends and making up your own rules and scenarios, the competitive route, building powerful lists and gunning for wins in tournaments, or maybe you'll become so focused on the painting and modeling opportunities that you won't even care how frequently you play. Most people land somewhere in between those 3.

My advice would be to poke around online a bit, pick up AoBR, learn the rules, play a few games, try making some terrain and painting up some figures, then see what you like. The hobby isn't for everyone, but there are so many aspects to it that it's hard not to enjoy at least some part of it.

Do you play any other types of miniature games? I assume since you are on a forum based around mini games you must at least have an interest.

The game itself is based on fighting in the far future. There are three distinct phases, Movement, Shooting and Assault. The movement phase is done in inches, using a ruler or tape measure. After the movement phase you can shoot with any guys that have guns or gun type options. If you have a unit or group of your guys within 6 inches of your opponents guys you can assault and go to hand to hand combat.

These three phases make up your part of the turn, then your opponent would get to go through the same three phases. This is the end of the full turn and the game usually runs for 6 or so turns, but it can vary depending on the type of mission you are playing.

I really like, but I enjoy the painting and modeling more. You will get a lot of different opinions, but I would take a look at the armies you like and pick one that appeals to you. You will have a hard time sticking with the army if you don't like the look of them.

One of the best ways for this is to go to a Games Workshop and talk to the employees and watch some actual games being played. Ask when the beginner day is. You could also try your local gaming shop that has 40K. Reading is fine but a practical demonstration can give a feeling of the game play and how you like it.

I agree you should go down to the Games Work Shop store , and have a staff explain to you.
They'll probably give a quick explanation for the different armies ( and no doubt try to convince you to play space marines or orks )
But , atleast they'll give you a short demo on how the game is played . And you can also take your time looking at the different armie's models.
If there is one that stand out the most , tell the staff you like it and maybe they'll elaborate abit on the play style + which unit might benefit you most.

Welcome to Dakka, mate!

Luna's right BTW, the GW staff should tell you what you need to know.

Inboud...

Welcome!

The GW hobby is incredibly diverse- casual gaming, competitive gaming, modeling and painting, terrain building, etc. Its definitly worth looking at- head down to your local GW and check out some games, as Luna suggested. This will give you a good insight into how the hobby works, and you'll be able to see what kind of people are involved in this hobby.

Should you decide to join us, the AoBR is a great way to start, and there are many beginner courses available to help out.

Hope that helps!

hey! welcome to dakka

i'd say you should go for it, especially if you live near-ish to a GW or FLGS

I'd suggest getting AoBR if your interested in playing either Space marines or Ork, especially if the amount of money you were going to get isn't vast.
but if your interested in any other race you could do just as well from buying a battle force, codex and rule book. its more expensive, but if you don't initially like the look of either army in AoBR then there is no point buying it just because it saves money and gets you the little rule book

Greetings

Lots of people find fault with the rules, but they're reasonably simple to pick up and play with. The problems only really occur when people start exploiting army books and developing power builds which are hard to win against.

Depending on how much money you have/get, I would also recommend getting the Assault on Black Reach box set or any of the "Battleforce" box sets. If you decide on an army to play other than Orks or Space Marines then look into getting that particular army's Battleforce.

Also, if you learn to read the rules and play but are unsure as to what army to heavily pursue, I would either ask around or go to your local gaming store and peruse the Codices (rule books for each army). If the clerks don't mind, just start flipping through a few pages and try to find something you'd be interested in.

Hope this helps, and welcome to dakka

The worst part is, he`s right

Welcome, a good idea is AoBR and get the battleforce for the army you like afterwards

My death will be avenged millions of rapid fire las bolts, followed by a plethora of heavy weapons artillery and other colorful assortments of death that will send chaos crying back to the warp where they will remain until they come up with another one of their "original" plans

You don't have to play straight away, y'know. If you're a total new face to painting/playing with miniatures, learn how to paint things quickly and to a good standard - Spend some time finding what suits you. Is there a particular army that looks really cool?

If you're not new to the whole collecting miniatures thing, well... Welcome to Dakka!

Will you be hanging around here? Ah well, good luck with whatever you get up to anyways!

Stop by your local game store, watch a game or two. (and the people playing it) If it looks interesting (and they are friendly) then I recommend picking up a used army. Talk to the guys that play there you might get a deal on one of thier old armies. (You can get everything 50% from players at my game store) Ebay can also work.

It also helps if you have a friend that plays. If not, them make sure there at pleanty of players at your local game store.

Once in the hobby, you will find that it offers both a fun game as well as a downtime hobby. So it will provide a lot of entertainment for its costs, but it does get expensive.
