Gorgeous colour use as always man!

Is the check pattern some kind of tape? It looks flawless. I am always envious of your shading on yellow, is it with the old inks?

Yes Ifalna, I cheezed out on that. Got the Forge World ork decal set which has all kinds of useful little insignia... though I mainly just use the checks and triangle strips... on and a bad moon symbol every once in a while. The Waaaagh! banner is a little too plain to be truly orky... but I've got enough things to paint between now and this Saturday as well as bing a "single dad" for the week (wife's travelling for work) and having workmen replace the roof on the house... so I have my hands full. Figured simple but nicely done would suffice.

Made a little progress on the Big Mek last night. I found a little bit from some vehicle that looked vaguely shoulder pad like, scored it with a jeweler's saw and bent it, then reinforced it with glue. In this photo it doesn't hide the lower part of the arm gap well, but this is much lower than anyone would normally see him (from typical table-viewing angles it's fine). Also added an iron gob (after additional bending & squishing) and a little Bad Moon totem hanging from the wires. This is one of those figures that everyone has... so I was looking for a few ways to make mine a little different without completely building one from scratch (time constraints).

As a result of the roofing, I am sans internet until Friday, so look for all updates during daylight hours (well, Wisconsin daylight hours).

Thanks for watching!

Here's a pic of my completed nobs with the Waaagh! banner. Squad was not painted by me but it's a decent enough basic paint job, just lacks a bit of detail which I'll come in and add later when I'm not so pressed for time. Main purpose of the shot is to show how basing can change the feel of a figure. This units before basing were very dark & a lot of the detail was lost in the dark tones. The bases act as a contrast to these shades and really improve the look of the figures.

Other than finishing the basing... I worked on my grots last night. I love grots... but painting them just bores me to tears. Hope to finish them tonight. Then it's to work on the Big Mek. Last chore for the tournament on Saturday (talk about cutting it close!).

You're right about the contrast making them pop. I can't get my eyes off of the WAAAGH Banner however. I think it needs to be dulled down a bunch more.

Yeah, you're both right. I think part of it is the tweaking I did on the photograph (i.e. it's artificialy bright). But I agree that it is a bit too clean and bright for a proper ork banner. However as I'm pressed for time to get everything done before this weekend... toning the banner down might need to wait for a later date. Additionally I hope to do a lot more with it... chains, dangling body parts, maybe the little squig from the boss pole perched on top... just a matter of time and inspiration. So please consider this a "fieldable WIP".

Then again there's always a bit of Badab Black...

Of course, the last tournament the store had you actually got a point towards your total if you screamed Waaaagh! at the top of your lungs at some point during a specific game... so maybe really bright is a good thing.

Actually the banner is the only thing that seems a bit off in an otherwise amazing squad.

I really like everything you've done here, and definitely look forward to seeing more.

OK, OK! I'll re-visit the banner....

I think in part it looks so out-of-place in contrast with the way the nobs are painted. Does not look so strange with my warboss who has a much brighter Bad Moon color scheme. Still, I'll give it a go tonight and see if I can't ork-it-up a bit. I'm thinking I'll change the red to something more muted & axe the checkerboard for starts. Then add some battle damage, exposed metal and rust.

NO, please don't touch it! That's a WAAAAAGH banner, it's meant to be visible clicks around, and be the focus of the Army ("besides Da Boss, uv curz"...)

O.K., re-worked the Waaagh! banner. Painted over the checks, the before the paint was dry went over it with a wet brush to expose pieces of it again. Sepia wash, black wash, weathering powders. Added metal plates, Waaagh gliph and trophy hooks (no time to make trophies at the moment)

And to make my point about context... here's my warboss (Gitsplitta) posing with the banner... only wish he could actually take it.

I am now wayyy behind in my painting. Only painted 1 grot. However he turned out well. Tonight I do the grots leaving the Big Mek to do in one day... not promising.

I do appreciate the comments though, the banner looks much better now. OH, and I figured out why it looks sto bright (even now), it's the lighting in the photo box... it gleams in there like it was plugged in. In normal lighting it looks quite subdued & worn.

I agree! Much improved. The muted checks and the added metal plates ad to the effect. Awesome! And yes the Warboss looks too cool with it behind him.

Still bright - even against da Warboss (observation, not criticism). He *can* take it - its called a "Boss Pole" - and a suitably sized one for a Warboss of his standing (I know - you meant as a Waagh Banner...)

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments. It does look a lot more "thoughtful" now and less of a slap-job.

I think the issue with the reds and green looking so bright in the box is the wavelength of the light coming off of my lamps. Unfortunately because of the style of bulb I have not been able to find any that give a natural or white light. Have my white balance tweaked on my camera as far as I can get it... which helps for photographs but they still look awfully bright in there. On the table though... it looks just fine.

I did think about the boss pole thing. He just looks good with that behind him so I may indeed do that. I did have a "grand scheme" for a diorama Waaaagh! banner using the big face plate / body decoration from the stompa, a T-shaped pole to hang it on and a bunch of orks and grots with ropes holding it steady and aloft. If I ever get to the point where that becomes a reality, this one will be permanently assigned to my boss as his boss pole.

I think the banner looks great against the Warboss. The reason I think it looks odd with the nob is because of the 2 differant painting styles. The nobs have a simpler paint job to where yours are a little more busy and have more detail and character. But I think havin the huge bosspole, as the ork would say "A kunnin' plan." to get the attention off the unit its with and to be seen all around like Yggdrasil said. But great work. Been following your blogs just never posted on one.

I think schank23 has a point in here... That may be the troublesome detail...

Thanks schank, you're always welcome to post... and I appreciate your comments.

Yeah, those blue guys came along with a lot that I got off e-bay that started my ork army. It wasn't bad moons, but it was nicely painted with a fair amount of figures already painted (nobs, some boys, beautiful group of war bikes, truck and battlewagon & a couple of HQ), as well as some xtra bits. It was just too good a deal to pass up and gave my kids and I an "instant" army.

Since then I've been painting a lot on my own & my style is much different, so I'm treating these as either a cult within the clan, or maybe a sub-clan that is allied with my Bad Moons (I believe the original artist called them "Bad Skulls". Course it's weird that all the nobs are from the other clan, however I've been collecting the old school Bad Moon mega nobs & will eventually get them painted up, which should restore the "fluff" balance between the groups.

I have emulated his painting style successfully only once when I finished his tankbusta squad (which remains my favorite squad in the army), but for the banner I went for something more consistent with my Bad Moons. When I make the big Waaagh! banner, I may divide it so half is in Bad Moons style and Half in Bad Skulls style... interesting thought actually.

Gitsplitta wrote:My new terrain came in!

I got tired of spending thousands of dollars on figures and thousands of hours painting, then playing on garbage terrain... So, I found an artist that makes 40k terrain and contracted for an ork mek works... or stompa factory.

Here is one broad shot of the results... 18 pieces total. Walls, gate, scrap piles, effluent pond, many industrial buildings and of course, the assembly area in the back. It's sized for a real stompa, unfortunately at the moment I only have the old Epicast version, so it looks a little small in comparison.

Color me jealous!!!! I love Pat's work, having been introduced to it on the Warmachine forums. His stuff is always so thematic and detailed.

I'd love to see a batrep using that terrain and your orks.

Good stuff.
