I imagine they'll be multipart, but not multipose, ala Black Reach. Conversion should be possible, but a bit more involved than normal??

Agreed. Base color shouldn't matter for those who paint and is handy for those that don't paint. Don't see any reason for fuss over that part - standard practice for a board game.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

Probably not. Considering this is a limited release run, they weren't focused on multi-part customizable minis, instead focusing on minis that are highly detailed and easy to snap together (if they're not all one piece to begin with) so they would look cool on the board.

I plan magnetising their feet so I can put them on a 40k stand when needed. Looks like a 40k base would be too big for the standard tile square.

I don't see why you would have to. I mean... you have RED figures vs BLUE figures... not that hard to tell them apart.

I'd rather have bare plastic than some horrible pre-painted crap that seems to be everywhere these days.

Hmm lets see if I can justify SH's price solely on the models alone. I'll be using GW equivalent models when possible which means that there will be some metals invovled:

11 Terminators : Either have to buy AOBR or their expensive 5 man set for something similar, at 10 bucks a terminator the SH deal already doesn't seem as bad (already over a $100 worth of GW minis) however I'm not sure how much an AOBR termie goes for on Ebay.
1 Terminator Librarian : Costs around $10-15 for a metal equivalent
22 Genestealers : 8 for $30 normally; equaling above $60 worth
Dead SM on Throne
Blood Angels artifact
Cyber altered task unit
: Not sure where GW sells objectives but at a modest $5 per item this would be at least $15 worth normally; however the SM on the throne would likely retail $15 if a metal counterpart was available
One Broodlord: About $20 for a metal equivalent

= At least $100-200 worth of GW minis? However this set doesn't include bitz and its all plastic; also the min's are new and limited.

**** Of course the other plastic sets come with more bitz but Space Hulk has its own advantages as well:

1. Limited edition mini's
2. Newer and looks to be more detailed if the pics are any indication of quality
3. You have enough to play a full game
4. This post didn't include the value for the rest of the SH stuff

So by mini's alone and with GW's retail prices; this set is actually kind of a deal and its got a lot of cool factors going for it like being limited edition, being a full game, and is a vessel for GW vets and newbies alike to play and enjoy.

They aren't pre-paints they are colored injected molded plastics common in board games. This looks almost identical to a Fantasy Flight board game and I believe they may have had a hand in production.

No, each box comes with every model fully painted by a member of the 'eavy Metal team. Read the details in post #312.

For $100 it really should.

And I don't see what's wrong with pre-paints. They really don't look as horrible as people say, and when it comes down to it what would you prefer to play against, bare unpainted plastic or pre-painted figures?

And I do think Space Hulk does stand up easily as one of the top 100 hobby games of all time. The only reason I don't play it more often (or really ever) is because it crosses that line between hobby and board game a little too much. So I can't interest my casual friends in Space Hulk because it seems a little too hardcore (although I could try. . .) and if I'm going to full-on 'hobby out' then I'm usually looking to play a full game of 40K.

But Space Hulk (1st edition) is brilliant IMHO.

Oh, and the 100 greatest hobby game book didn't have a strict numerical countdown. It was just 100 game designers picking their favorite game and telling you why. So you could say that Space Hulk was tied for 1st. . .along with every other game in the book.

Come on now. As much as some of us don't like to paint them, would you have preferred if they didn't paint them? I'm sure pre-painted GW models would send chills down many a spine.
...unless GW has chained the 'Eavy Metal teams to their desks, ordering them to furiously pump out painted SH minis. That I might mind less.

I agree, and I can't tell, are they AoBR style (i.e. mini's for dummies?)

11 Space Marine Terminators, one Space Marine Terminator Librarian, 22 Genestealers, and one Broodlord and some cardboard for $100USD?
Pass.

Print out old rules for SH $0.00
Use your own mini's $0.00
Scratch build some sweet corridors $0.00
Seeing GW make an ass of themselves, priceless.

The weird bases will make them less stable for real table top playing (so that you have to use you're expensive termi's for 40K and the cheep ones for SH?) I guess you could just make or buy regular bases if you want these for 40K. But I just don't really see this as a good deal.

What I don't get is why people are looking at this as a way to get cheaper mini's... It's sold as a board game.... you guys are reading too much in to the AOBR WalletHammer maths. this isn't a way to get minis for £2 each, It's a way to play space hulk.

I would assume it is the same plastic they mold everything out of, with the addition of color.

And if you want this game so you can hack up the terminators, you should go get a bunch of black reach terminators instead. Hack on something with little value.

100% with Panic on this one. I'm not buying this for the minis, or buying it because it's Space Hulk, or buying it because of the cardstock tiles. I'm buying it for all three of those - a complete package.

And if it turns out they fit with the previous two editions of Hulk, I'll be in 7th heaven.

Schepp himself wrote:Plastic tiles would be a bonus and useable for regular 40k (non-standard missions).

I'm sorry, but how do the tiles being cardstock stop them from being used in non-standard missions? Do you have special 40K minis that are repelled by non-plastic flooring?

[EDIT]: And it turns out that Maelstrom Games UK did get copies of Space Hulk - 15 of them to be exact, however...

I would guess that they were thinking that Blood Angels are red, and Genestealers are blue, and that this is a boardgame. So those who buy it purely as a boardgame get miniatures in appropriate colours without having to paint them, and for those who do paint them the colour of the plastic will make not a whit of difference.

Seriously. I'm pumped because I'm getting a copy of my favorite game in a new edition. It feels cheapen to know people are just going to get it for the minis and never even try out the game. This is the real reason GW doesn't support any other games. Too many people are too obsessed with the core games to even want to try something. I remembered when LotR came out what ruined it for a number of people was that you couldn't convert or use those models for fantasy. Yet that too is a good game.

The only gripe I have is the apparent choice of base, I would have liked to see the traditional round base, perhaps with a bit of molded-in ship floor texture.

Given the current termie base, I would support their choice of using such a lame base. It is practical and easy to convert if the need arises. Larger bases means larger playing board. Larger playing board costs more and takes up more space. It should be playable on a smaller dining table. If not, it is hard to sell as a board game. Makes sense to me why they did it this way. Easy conversion.

I can understand that but looking at this as a self contained game will an irregular base really affect it?

The big question for a while was, small base or big base, this solves the problem by giving about as much support as a big base but without dwarfing the square. Besides 90% of people here could just as easily hack it off its base and put it on a new one. That will be the simplest conversion of your life.

NoVA

I short-cycled my first e-mail this morning.

While I lamented (and will continue to lament) GW's marketing "strategy" for this and for SW and Skaven (and whatever else), my purchasing decisions are based on the product.

And, for my money and time, this is a fantastic product. I like the cardboard tiles (I'll make them fit with my older tiles if I have to), I love the artwork, I love the concept of Space Hulk (removes a lot of the baggage that 40K comes with [baggage I love, but nonetheless]), I love the Genestealers (a variety of styles, and the Broodlord is capital "G" Great), I love the objectives, and I love the Terminators. These plastics are fantastic, with exceptional detail and variety. I am debating ordering a second copy to pilfer parts for models. That is how good I think they are.

Anyways, a great release that I am quite excited for. Probably the most excited I've been for the hobby since Apocalypse.

That's what I thought as well. Don't really see why it such a big deal - the colour choice makes sense to me. It's a boardgame, so you are supplied with boardgame pieces that can later be added to and painted if you choose, but don't have to be.

I think that some people here fail to realise is that this isn't a starter-set like Black Lagoon or Battle for McDonald's. It's a boardgame - a complete game in a box.
