Just a quick comment about the prince on griffon model from the IoB box set:
Saw a guy at the FLGS using two of the naked griffons as his great eagles! And while he did not use the actual prince on one of them, which kept things from being confusing, he did have one opponent make a remark about this "proxy."
Would this bother anyone if they saw it on the table top? The argument that "fledgling" or "trained" griffons could be lending the HE's a hand is not terribly far-fetched.

Well, they are both big birdy-things from the front, so I personally wouldn't have a problem with it.

I don't see anything wrong with that.
Also, see my signature for an alternative use of the IoB griffon.

My GW won't let me proxy them for Great Eagles (although their general policy is "No proxies unless converted or they closely represent the model they're being used for" see this current rant for how closely the model must resemble the other), so I think GW stores might be a no-go if you're planning to use them.
Other than that, you're best off just asking first; unless you're playing an SoM game, I don't think anyone bar complete asshats should have any issues, especially if they're riderless; even someone lacking in the common sense dept. should realise that two griffons in a 1500pt game can't be right.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

GW stores that act like that can suck it.
They make perfectly fine looking great eagles, and if I had the time I'd convert 2 of them based solely on the fact that the GW eagles look crap.

I converted the rider on mine to look more Bretonnian, and use it as a Lord with Hyppogriff. Close enough for government work, anyway.
(Of course, the Hyppy Lord is about as useful as the HE griffon prince, so I really haven't gained anything...)

If I had the ability to convert them then i'd do it in a heartbeat, but as it stands, i'm not willing to cut up two perfectly good models on the off chance that I might be able to produce something more eagle-ish, nor am I willing to shell out £15.50 each for two models that A) probably won't even be supported by the flimsy flying rod they come with and B) look awful, terribly monopose and haven't aged very well at all.
As it stands, I might need to start taking more trips down to my local independant store (the only reason I go to my GW is because my 1.5k Fantasy armies aren't done yet, and it's the only place where I can pick up a 1k game without having to ask someone if they're able to rip some stuff out of their 1.5k-2k armies or if they have models for any lower point games with them) since they're far more relaxed about proxies, so I can actually fill my units with some of my KoW Elves in addition to using my Griff-eagles.

I have seen a few conversions done that seem pretty easy but i cant really describe them and you need to be a bit handy with green stuff.
My store as long as your opponent is ok with proxies then its ok usually for fun games if you are trying out new units.
So that way yif you like the way the models work you buy them and dont bitch about them being a bad buy since they only looked good on paper.
But they dont want you to do it all the time is the thing.
Conversions are very welcome tho and no one enjoys a good conversion as much as the manager.
So maybe a bit of cutting an green stuff and some plastic card and you are set.

Green stuff is the main reason why i'm critical about doing it, simply because i'm useless with it. I can fill in gaps and tha's the extent of my abilities; scratch-building an entire tail or even just GSing feathers is something far beyond my capability, and since i'm a perfectionist, it's something i'd likely ruin whilst trying to fix that one niggling issue; I have the same trouble with painting, if I noticed something wrong, it eats at me until I fix it, but that usually ends up ruining another bit.
Unless it's a simple kitbash, you're probably better off asking a 5-year old to build it.
There's also the thing about there being very little to test this sort of GSing on, and i'm loathe to waste 2 perfectly good griffons by cutting bits of and finding out that my "skills" (if you can call them that) have pretty much fethed it up and the model is now useless.

Well at the GW I go to the recommended that I convert the Griffin by removing the rider and green stuffing the hole. Then using it as a Eagle during normal games and a griffin during storm of magic games. If your GW rep really gives you an issue simple tell him this.
It's my Hobby and these are the models I want to use for my army.
The employee is not looking at it in the correct manner. By allowing this, you will buy more core sets because other than that one model cores sets are a great deal for both armies in them. You will need clippers, green stuff, sculpting tools, paints and everything else to complete the conversion. Not to mention they will get to run spontaneous activities with you and possibly other customers and it could inspire other customers to do the same conversion. Which in turn will cause the GW rep to sell more core sets.

I cut the rider off of mine and used leftover bits from the Hihg Elf Dragon kit to give it a new rider. I made it interchangeable too so I could mount a mage on it. I know it's not covered by the current rules, but I like the looks of it.

I wish! I saw this down at the FLGS, where the owner (of the model, not the store) was putting the finishing touches on it before priming. Haven't seen anything quite like it on the net, sadly.
