Orks vs Guard, 3 of 3, 1500pts, pic heavy

INTRODUCTION
While attending Warhammer World for the 'Eavy Metal Painting Masterclass 3rd July 2011, endtransmission and I took the opportunity to make use of the tables and scenery to continue our respective army's struggle against each other. This is battle three of three. You may also enjoy battle one of three and battle two of three

Morgrim paced. "Wotz taken' so long?" he bellowed. 'Avin' giv'n da 'umies a good kickin', most ov da Boyz were in pretty good shape an' woz already out on da offenziv lookin' for any more 'umies dat might challenge Da Dark Angelz presence in da reg'n. Da Deffwing 'ad not bin so lucky - dey an' deir Trukk 'ad required extensiv repairs - more extensiv dan wot Morgrim 'ad bin led ta believe. 'E now wish'd 'e 'adn't stay'd behin' ta 'ave 'is Shoota looked at.

Skarag stopped workin' on da Trukk an' faced da pacing' Morgrim. "Ize got gud newz an' bad newz Boss!" 'e said enthusiastically. "Wotz da gud newz?" Morgrim grumbled impatiently. "Trukk's fixed!". "Right you lot" Morgrim shouted, addressin' da Meganobz, "Mount up! I wanna catch up ta da rest ov da Boyz *before* dey find anymore 'umies!". In a cacophony ov whirrs, thumps an' da occasional expletiv, da Meganobz clambered on ta da Trukk, Skarag an' Morgrim joinin' dem.

Az da Trukk sped off, Morgrim ponda'd dat 'e 'ad miss'd sumfin'. It suddenly dawn'd on 'im. 'E lift'd Skarag up by one ov 'iz Mek Tool armz. "Wot woz da bad newz?" Momentarily tak'n off guard, Skarag stamma'd "Da Boyz 'ave found da 'umies - dey 'iz already advancin' unda da cuvva ov dawn." Morgrim threw Skarag ova da side ov da Trukk in disgust an' turned 'iz attention ta da Trukk driva. "Get us dere before da battle iz ova or you're squig food!"

MISSION: Dawn Raid (Battle Mission)
DEPLOYMENT: Dawn Raid (4 Objectives)

PRELUDE
We rolled up a random Battle Missions mission - Dawn Raid - a Dark Eldar mission. Orks won the roll off so Guard took the role of "the Enemy". I probably won the roll of for choice of side too - choosing to deny the Guard the majority of large ruins whilst allowing me to sneakily hide behind them…

Four objectives were setup as indicated - one at the centre of the table, and one at the centre of each quarter except the Ork quarter.

The Orks roll on amongst the cover of buildings. Morgrim, Skarag and the Meganobz missing… (HQ, Elites and Heavy Support start in reserve)

The Guard deploy in the top left...

HQ, Elites and Fast Attack start in reserve.

The Ork Deffkoptas scout up the field, planning to exert early pressure on the Guard lines.

Orks (Dark Eldar) successfully take first turn with a 2+. Night fight is in effect until a 6 is rolled at the end of a turn.

TURN 1
Grimskab peer'd uncertainly inta da dark. Lights in da distance 'ad giv'n away da 'umies position. Wiv Morgrim an' Skarag absent, leadership ov da boyz fell to 'im - an' Grimskab intended ta make da most ov it! 'E silently signalled da Rav'nwing Deffkoptas ta scout ahead. The noise of deir engins pierced da silence ov da dawn. Grimskab cursed az da lights in da distance went out an' 'e could 'ear da 'umies readying ta meet da new threat. "Quick! Forward now!" Da three Trukks sprung forward, da noise ov deir engin's makin' da Deffkoptas seem quiet in comparison, racin' each uvver towards da 'umie camp. Az Grimskab held on for dear life, 'e hoped dey hadn't completely lost da element ov surprise…

The Ork Deffkoptas zero in on their targets, the Heavy Weapons Team and Platoon Command Squad, while the Trukks open up their throttles and move flat out towards the closest Guard, keeping behind the central building and relying on Night Fight - as the KFF is nowhere to be seen…

Deffkoptas, having missed with their Rokkits, try things the old fashioned way and assault in.

Lug, Rav'nwing Deffkopta pilot ov Da Dark Angelz, turbo boosted recklessly an' wivout fear towards da fadein' lights ov da 'umie encampment. Az 'e scoured da dark for targets, 'e cud 'ear, ravver dan see, Grimgut off ta 'iz left, doin' da same. Da unmistakeable sound ov a Rokkit let 'im know Grimgut 'ad foun' a target first - or thought 'e 'ad anyway. Lug's disappointment didn't last long, 'oweva, az two groups ov 'umies came inta view. Unda da lights ov 'iz Deffkopta, Lug made out da telltale ooniformz ov da 'umie leadaz, which woz also da smalla group. Wiv glee in 'iz eyez, Lug let loose 'iz Rokkits - which meandered well wide ov anything - before ploughing' 'iz Deffkopta inta dem, cutting' down two an' den runnin' down da rest az dey fled. Lug circled aroun' inta sum nearby ruins, deftly avoid'n da debris, eyeing' up 'iz next target. 'E bet Grimgut hadn't bin nearly az successful!

The left Deffkopta whiffs and remains locked in combat (picture has an incorrect casualty). The central Deffkopta either runs down the Platoon Command Squad, or watches them retreat from the battle (I can't remember which!) before consolidating in the nearby ruins.

Trukks before Guard return fire.

The Guard mostly move towards the Ork Trukks.

The other Heavy Weapons Team remains still to attempt to make out targets in the dark. The Veterans Chimeras move down the left flank.

The lead Ork Trukk is blown to pieces, along with most of the onboard boyz, sending them packing.

The Deffkopta in the ruins manages to evade damage.

The Deffkopta on the left manages to kill one of the Heavy Weapons Team, forcing them to retreat but is unable to catch them.

Night fighting continues!

ORKS: 0 objectives (2 kill points)
IG: 1 objective (2 kill points)

TURN 2
Grimskab wotched az 'umies followed by a lumberin' Boomwagon appeared aroun' da corna ov da buildin' dey woz approachin'. Too close ta 'ide in da dark or behin' da buildin', an' wivout Skarag's Kustom Force Field, Grimskab cud only wotch az da lead Trukk ov Boyz woz blasted apart an' da Boyz cut down. At least it wozn't 'im! Still, deir sacrifice woz not fer naught - da 'umies woz now exactly where 'e wonted dem! Grimskab signalled ta da uvver Trukk ta close wiv da Boomwagon - wiv a bit 'o luck, dey might run down sum ov da 'umies az well - whilst signalling 'iz ta move inta assault range, Da Inna Circul preparing' ta disembark an' give da 'umies a gud whack'n.

Lug laughed az da 'umie light sticks failed ta bovver 'im amongst da ruins. 'E 'ad made out anuvva small group ov 'umie leadaz advancing' behind da main group, and made a bee-line fer dem - though in 'iz enthusiasm, 'e managed ta clip da Deffkopta rotor on part ov da ruin. On approach, 'e cud make out Grimgut, who 'ad foun' 'imself sum 'umie big gunz ta harass. By da look ov sum uvver big gunz fleeing' da field, perhaps Grimgut 'ad dun az well… Lug momentarily caught Grimgut's eye an' dey simultaneously loosed deir Rokkits. Unda competition, or just plain luck, bofe 'it deir respectiv' targets. Lug an' Grimgut swooped in ta finish da job an' prove who woz best. Lug woz not distracted by da sight ov Grimgut clippin' da roks on 'iz way in, an' cleaned up da 'umie leadaz flawlessly a sekund time. Az 'e circled aroun' again, 'e took enjoyment in Grimgut'z obvious lack ov finesse - strugglin' against da 'umies.

The Deffkoptas continue to make a nuisance of themselves, although the central one manages to damage itself whilst extricating itself from the central ruin.

The second Boyz Trukk Tank Shocks the blob squad to get within Boarding Plank assault distance of the Leman Russ whilst the Nobz disembark behind, ready to put some hurt on the blob squad.

This time the Rokkits hit home!

But the Deffkoptas still need to assault in to finish the job - the other one damaging itself as it assaults through the rocks…

The Nobz prepare to unleash the hurt.

The Deffkoptas continue their respective assault results - the left whiffing, the right accounting for another Platoon Command Squad.

The Nobz put the hurt on whilst the Nob on the Boarding Plank merely manages to Shake the Leman Russ.

Reinforcements arrive in the form of the Psyker Battle Squad (Chimera mounted) and Ratlings. The blob Guard squad moves to secure their objective, whilst the Veteran Chimeras circle around, one claiming another objective.

Guard exact revenge on the Platoon Command Squad killing Deffkopta.

The remaining Deffkopta continues it's poor close combat showing and elects to Hit and Run.

Meanwhile the Nobz finish off their blob Guard squad - though not without some bruises!

Night fighting ends!

ORKS: 0 objectives (4 kill points)
IG: 2 objectives (3 kill points)

TURN 3
Da 'umies woz stubborn, refusing' ta retreat before da might ov da Inna Circul, an so da Nobz 'ad ta cut every last one ov dem down. Grimskab surveyed da carnage. Da Boyz 'ad managed ta silence da Boomwagon, but not stop it. 'E waved dem on irritably, an' signalled 'iz Trukk ta cum an' pick da Inna Circul up. If yuze wont a job dun right, yuze gotta do it yerself!

Grimgut woz not 'avin' a gud day. While 'e struggled against da 'umies, Lug woz flyin' circles aroun' dem. Even when 'e 'ad success, Lug 'ad ta do betta. Frustrated, Grimgut extracted 'imself from da 'umies ta "re-appraise" da situation. 'E woz glad 'e did - 'e got ta see Lug go down in a hail ov lasfire - hurr!

Morgrim, 'avin' finally made da field, quickly surveyed da situation. Casualties seemed minimal. Grimskab appeared ta 'ave da right flank unda control. 'Oweva dere woz 'umie wagons runnin' free aroun' strategik points. Morgrim shouted at 'is driva ta make for da closest one az fast az possible. At least 'e made it 'ere before da Kommandos...

Da boyz move on, allowing the Nobz Trukk to come in and pick the Nobz up whilst remaining in Boarding Plank range of the Leman Russ. The Deffkopta decides to go after the central Chimera.

Meanwhile, Morgrim, Skarag and da Meganobz arrive on the scene and bee-line towards the closest Chimera. (I hadn't realised that the deployment edges are actually the corners in this battle - I thought I had a free run to hit the Chimera, but as endtransmission correctly pointed out - I didn't )

Closer look of the Deffkopta moving into position.

The Nobz wreck the Leman Russ whilst the remaining Deffkopta continues its inability to hit anything.

The Heavy Weapons Team rallies, the rest of the Guard shuffle around a bit. The central Chimera ignores the Deffkopta, heading towards the middle whilst the Veterans disembark from the other to secure their objective, letting their Chimera act as a roadblock to Morgrim and da Meganobz.

Guard shooting sees the final Deffkopta put out of its misery, the lead Trukk Shaken and Weapon Destroyed.

ORKS: 0 objectives (4 kill points)
IG: 2 objectives (4 kill points)

TURN 4
Morgrim went ta scratch 'iz 'ead in confusion ov da 'umie tactics, rememba'd 'iz Megaarmour, an' thought betta ov it. Directin' 'iz driva ta go aroun' da 'umie wagon blockin' iz path, he regretted da 'umies in da Norf West woz unmolested - wiv nun ov 'iz boy in range ta do anyfing about it. Skarag, who 'ad managed ta remain on board by attachin' one ov 'iz uvver Mek Tool armz ta da Trukk, pointed out da Kommandos approachin' behind doze 'umies, bringin' a smile ta Morgrim's face. Morgrim ordered da Deffwing out da front ta deal wiv da 'umies guardin' da Stategik Objektiv, whilst he hopped out da bak ta deal wiv deir blockin' wagon.

Kommandos turn up on the left flank behind the two Heavy Weapons Teams whistle Morgrim's Trukk manoeuvres around the blocking Chimera, allowing the Meganobz to disembark in front of the Veterans. Morgrim, who probably should have stayed mounted, disembarks to thump the Chimera.

The other Ork Trukks circle around, the Boyz Trukk moving into Boarding Plank range of the central Chimera.

Shooting manages to stun the Chimera...

The Kommandos multi-assault the Heavy Weapons Teams.

The Meganobz assault the Veternas whilst Morgrim assaults the Chimera.

Unsurprisingly, there is mass carnage - the shaking of the central Chimera being the only let down.

The Guard Company Command Squad makes its appearance in its Vendetta. The Ratlings continue towards the central objective, whilst the central Chimera moves below it.

The remaining blob Guard Squad moves to face the Kommandos.

Guard shooting is mostly ineffective, shaking the Boyz Trukk (actually, I think this may have been stunned).

The blob Guard Squad assaults the Kommandos.

Carnage results, but they hold their own and remain in the fight.

ORKS: 0 objectives (8 kill points)
IG: 0 objectives (4 kill points)

TURN 5
Morgrim smiled. Smashin' 'umie wagons alwayz lifted 'iz spirits. Az 'e clambered bak inta da Trukk wiv Skarag, 'e cud see things woz goin' just az well across da battlefield. Nearby, da Deffwing finally got ta play, whilst in da distance, da Kommandos took out da 'umie big gunz. Only da boyz disappointed, leavin' da 'umie wagon in front ov dem intact, an' free to move away. Morgrim ordered 'iz driva ta give chase…

Grimacing at da incompetence ov da Boyz, Grimskab left dem ta deir fate an' directed 'iz Trukk towards da new tropheez, I means threatz, in da Norf. Besides, dey wud soon meet up wiv da Boss an' 'e cud deal wiv dem! If anyone asked, 'e woz goin' ta assist da Kommandoz, who seem'd ta 'ave got inta a spot 'o bovver wiv da large group ov 'umies. Readyin' deir weaponz, da Inna Circul disembarked again an' ploughed inta da 'umie wagon an' flyin' machine - wiv satisfyin' resultz. Grimskab woz sure da Boss wood be pleased - perhaps lettin' 'im 'ave more free reign in da future…

Morgrim re-embarks his Trukk and moves back towards the right, the Meganobz do similarly, albeit on foot. The Nobz move towards the Psyker Chimera and Vendetta, disembarking to allow a multi-assault (whilst also coming into range of the top left objective). The Ork Boyz dismount and use their Trukk as a shield why eyeing off the Ratlings.

Boyz shooting is a little *too* effective, killing off the Ratlings, while the retreating Boyz manage a lucky Rokkit, immobilising the Chimera.

The Nobz leave the objective behind to multi-assault the Psyker Chimera and Vendetta...

…exploding the Chimera, in turn killing seven Psykers and pinning them, and wrecking the Vendetta. The Kommandos continue to cut down the blob Guard Squad.

Veterans disembark and attempt to secure the objective.

Company Command Squad line up on the Nobz.

Veterans secure the objective whilst the Company Command Squad fells two Nobz and causes them to retreat...

Guard redouble their efforts, bringing down all but the last Kommando, but for equal casualties in return.

The battle continues!

ORKS: 0 objectives (11 kill points)
IG: 1 objective (5 kill points)

TURN 6
Morgrim took stock ov da field. Da battle woz cumin' ta a close. From 'iz position he directed da Boyz, da Deffwing an' Skarag ta close on da 'umie position. In da Norf West, 'e cud only wotch wiv pride az Grimskab rallied Da Inna Circul an' moved ta first assist da last ov da Kommandoz before securin' da Norf West strategik objective. Dis 'ad bin fun!

The Nobz rally and move back towards the upper left objective, whilst the two remaining Trukks move to block the view of the Company Command Squad and Psyker Battle Squadron. The Meganobz and Boyz close in on the Veterans on the bottom right objective. Morgrim's ride moves into Boarding Plank range of the immobilised Chimera and Skarag disembarks, readying his Burna at the Veterans.

Morgrim calls down the Waaagh! allowing the Meganobz and Boyz to close the distance, while Skarag softens the Veterans up with his Burna.

The Nobz lend a hand to the last Kommando...

…whilst Meganobz, Boyz and Skarag assault the Veterans.

The Veterans lose, but remain in the fight.

The Nobz finish up the blob Guard Squad and move back with the lone Kommando to secure the objective.

VICTORY: ORKS!

ORKS: 1 objectives (12 kill points)
IG: 0 objectives (4 kill points)

AFTERMATH
Once again, time has dulled my memory so I can only surmise about how this actually ended. Most likely, we were running out of time. It doesn't look like Morgrim Boarding Planked the last Chimera (which should have been almost auto destroy - 5 automatic penetrating hits) or that we moved the combatants in to that final battle with the Veterans - though the chance of the surviving another round of combat with more of the Meganobz participating seems… slim. I think this is pretty much how it concluded - the Veterans would have been wiped, leaving me with one objective, and the Guard could only contest the other (or kill off the Nobz).

Like the second battle, I think this seemed closer in playing than the KP might suggest - though I also think I felt less out of control this game than last. Turn 4 with the Kommandos coming in and Morgrim and the Meganobz hitting home was probably the turning point - the Guard simply ran out of options after that. I did feel they had their eyes on the objectives however - having claimed three of the four over the course of the game (but unable to hold on to them).

Da Dark Angelz (Orks)
The plan was to sweep down the right flank in order to minimise the number of guns the Guard could bring to bear, the Deffkoptas picking out what targets of opportunity they could. The lack of HQs and Elites hurt (especially the lack of KFF - but also effectively limiting the effect they would have on the game). In the end, it felt like mop up duty, chasing various Guard forces around the board.

Love the fluff as always

Typical Orks - didn't really think about objectives until it was almost too late - good win!

Looking forward to a Nid v Ork smash fest - should be bloody

Objectives? What objectives? Oh... *those* objectives - yeah, pretty much an afterthought. You are right, had the game ended turn 5, the Guard would have pulled off a well earned (due to the pain they had suffered) win.

I think that you need to go straight Vin Diesel from Fast and the Furious on that guy...

"Almost had me....you never had me....you never had those objectives. Ask any ork, any real ork, and he'll tell you it doesn't matter if you win by 1 objective or 100 because winning is winning."

That ought to set the tone for if you two play again soon.

Almost forgot....great report.

Lovely batrep, looks like you're getting the hang of objectives . I feel the guard went a bit too quickly for the objectives though; I always wait till T3 before considering objective, and only start moving on T4-5. If you move up sooner, your opponent starts shooting/assaulting you off the objectives anyway.

A Squeaky Waaagh!!

Meercat: "All eyes turned to the horizon and beheld, in lonely and menacing grandeur, the silhouette of a single Grot robot chicken; a portent of evil days to come."

Thanks guys!

It did seem the Guard were making a scramble for the objectives instead of concentrating firepower - though it almost paid off in the end...

Orks and objectives - a delicate balance of trying to get where they finish the game and the location of the objectives to coincide (I need some Grotz!)
