Update with one day left:

I was a late call up for an Adepticon Team Tournament team, and they're doing a coalition Blood Angels force. Since I've always wanted to paint yellow marines, I chose the Lamentors.

Eight straight weeks of overtime, mixed with weekend getaways with the girlfriend and other obligations meant it was March 17, 33 days out from Adepticon, and I had this on my hands:

Luckily, I had a plan.

Lamenters have two big problems: checkered shoulder pads, and, well... they're yellow. The latter is easy to solve these days. I bought a can of Army Painter Daemon yellow, I have yellow foundation paints from GW and Reaper, and a great range of yellows from the Reaper Master Series line. I'm prepared to make the yellow happen.

My current question/dilemma is this: Lamenters are traditionally more of a mustard yellow, not the bright Fist yellow. Should I switch to more of a khaki/tan spray, and build up to yellow? Or should I just go full on bright yellow?
I was stuck on the checkers, until ph34r showed me Mousemuffin Designs in this thread. Despite warning that shipping could take weeks, I got my pads within 10 days from Australia.

On initial inspection, they're well casted, with no more flash than you'd normally expect from resin. The scuplting quality is about average for the garage shops. Nobody is going to mistake them for FW pads, but they'll look far better than hand painted checks, so I'm extremely happy.

Armed with my plan, I began the mega build Saturday, March 17. I built two twin lascannon razorbacks, a baal pred with full dakka, an AC/LCx2 predator, and a drop pod. I also matched legs to scenic bases, finished the dread nought, and built the chaplain.

He's got great hair, and more Dakka than he knows what to do with. While it'll be a pain to paint, I think the crewmen add a ton of character to the tanks.

This is a really simple conversion, just cut the chainsword out of his right hand, and dropped an auspex into a left bolter hand. I think he looks like a tank commander.

The best part of Dreadnought Drop Pods? No fiddly internal gubbins!

Speaking of dreadnoughts, I went old school with my furioso. I tried to give him a more dynamic, walking pose. Luckily two part epoxy held on his ankles on the second try.

Second edition called, and they want their librarian back. I wanted to put a custom pad on my libby, and I had this model, so I decided to rock an old school libby. My plan is to paint the weapons with flat red, like they used to, so having some older models won't be as out of place.

I was hoping to get everything built yesterday, but I'm quite happy with the final results:

I do need to take a file to all of the gun barrels, as I wanted them to fully dry before smoothing out the joins. I should also drill out the barrels (ugh), although I may use some of the armorcast cinematic effects instead...

Today I'm going to prime the tracks, and paint them black. I'm doing them separate so I'm not constantly retouching yellow hulls.

The next points on the agenda are gluing legs to bases, which might need to wait for my gf to wake up, as I want to take the dremel to some of the resin to make room. Until them, I'm going to just mix up epoxy and start gluing what I want. That, and cleaning up gun barrrels so I can take my spiffy yellow primer to the vehicles!

Very cool, I like these type of 'time limit' threads.

I really like those shoulder pads, I didn't realise that company did more than those Awesome Wraith bike/tank/things.

The Lamenters are an awesome chapter from both a fluff perspective and a paint scheme one, a full force of them will look particularly striking. 7

Are you going for a particular theme? Post or Pre Badab for example.

Looking forward to seeing more.

It will be interesting to see what you do with this - yellow can be a very unforgiving colour to work, even with Army Painter sprays and foundation paints. I have previously deliberately shied away from yellow schemes where possible in the past.

I like the initial look of the scenic bases too. Where did you get them from?

I had never even heard of them before ph34r recommended them. I think they'll look great painted. Black and white checks are a bold look, just a pita.

I haven't really thought about that...

Probably post, I guess. did their heraldry change much due to that?

The bases are by a now defunct garage shop called, IIRC, chubbycollectibles? I got a big grab bag from them as a prize at Origins for best appearance. I had no clue what to do with them, then decided that rather than wait to order city-fight bases elsewhere, I could pull these out. I think they'll blend in with other city fight bases later.

And yeah, i'm scared of doing all yellow. I've been painting bad moons for a while though, and I'm learning how to get "dirty" yellow to work, so I'm not completely scared. Maybe I should be...

They didn't change their heraldry after Badab as far as i'm aware. They got a bit beat up by The Minotaurs, then ran into Hive Fleet Kraken. Their isn't many left, 3 companies apparently.

So it's probably 3 companies of the toughest Lamenters. Apparently they don't suffer from the Black Rage, or at least not as much as the other Blood Angels based chapters.

So, today's sudden thunderstorm halted my priming efforts, but I manged to prime all of my vehicles, and assemble my infantry. Here's a group shot (also promoted to first post)

Here is a shot of the assault squads:

I'm actually pretty happy with how I got the scouts onto the bases without converting either the legs or the base.

A close up of the primed librarian:

Word of caution: while the primer works as a primer, it's not the toughest, particularly on the dreadnought. I wish I had primed the vehicles white first, and then sprayed yellow. As it is, I spent a lot of spray paint covering all the nooks and crannies. White primer, IME, coats better, which I could than go over with paints.

Good luck to you Polonius. I actually HATE a time line, though i incessantly do projects that require them (why oh why do i do this to myself). I have heard that a brown wash over yellow works well, as it does for red. You might have a go at it on some spare bits to see what you think. So far it all looks good though, and if i could i would lend any support above and beyond just the moral kind.

BTW. we just had Nerf hail and rain here too so i guess i am done with any priming for the day as well.

Well, i must have read your mind, because I primed up an old captain I had lying about, just to test that very idea:

And then hit him with a nice coat of Les Bursly's Flesh Wash:

Barring any other ideas from the peanut gallery, I think I'm going to use that as my base coat.

Well, after I fill in the black areas with some goop (a mix of paynes grey pain and black ink, cut with a little flow release).

Prime yellow, fill in black areas, wash brown... than began painting for real-real, not for play-play.

I personally use Gryphonne Sepia as the wash colour as it is a wee bit more towards the yellow tone but I think that Flesh Wash works pretty well too.

After a few days of work and other distractions, I finished priming my army. I'm glad for this blog, if only because I'm glad I documented the mind-numbing yellow-ness of the army:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Day Five: After finally chasing my girlfriend out wednesday evening, I finished priming the army as I noted in the above post. Full of motivation, I decided to test out some simple blocking on an assault marine and a razorback.

My plan is to prime the models, and then paint equiptment and aquilas red, black and metal areas black, and checks white, prior to a flesh wash.

To pain the black areas, I mixed up paynes grey paint with black ink. I kept both on the palette, and varied the ratios as I filled in various folds, hoses, and drive wheels. For the red areas, I used Reaper's Deep Red. I gave areas to be checked on the Razorback two coats of white.

For the razorback in particular, I held back on painting more areas red. Painting Space Marine vehicles is a little bit like mixing a martini, in that the ratio of main to secondary ingredients can be pretty slanted, but shouldn't be zero. I settled on the lascannon tips, the weapons hood, and the aquila.

After the paint dried, I applied a thin wash of Les's Flesh wash. I learned an important lesson on the futility of trying to apply wash to a large flat surface:

I plan on going over most of the model by hand anyway, but for future tanks I'm sticking with texture and recesses.

OTOH, I think the assault marine benefitted from the wash:

For those of you considering buying into the Army Painter "system," I think I can give it a pretty enthusiastic nod. I basically primed the models with their primer, blocked them out with flat paints, and washed. And, IMO, they look table top ready. Not great, but certainly solid for league play and the like. I'd be very interested in their matching acrylics, but those come out next month.

My plan is to begin layering some reaper yellows over the primer, especially to conceal the pooled wash on the razorback. On the whole though, I'm comfortable with the current color scheme. It just needs to be cleaned up and highlighted.

Washes on tanks car work quite well, if you do them right. You can't just slap it on there and call it 'done.'
You've got to work the wash.
Apply it to your flat areas, but move it around with your brush. It'll "stain" the flat areas slightly and move towards your cracks & crevasses. Leave it in the cracks and crevasses.

In the end, you'll have a SLIGHTLY darker version of your base coat with shading in the cracks, etc.

This is coming along nicely.

You might be able to...wash off the wash. I've had the same thing happen to models, and I've just dabbed a bit of paper towel into my water and taken it right off.f

A wet paint brush should do the trick, too. I've used that before.
As long as you haven't sealed the model, it should come right up with just a little work.

Thanks for the tip! I think I'll be able to do that when I start bulk applying wash.

My only progress in the last few days has been in applying my black base to the entire force. I mix black india ink with Payne's gray artist acrylic, and add flow release. This goes smoothly onto all of the areas on the models that will be black, metallic, or dark (such as bases and cloaks). To give an idea of how this looks, here are the scout post-black:

The yellow still comes through on the high points, but the goop really gets into all the lower areas.

to give an idea of how the models will look, here's my own partially painted model, with cleaned up yellow and highlighted red, as well as some basic boltgun metal:

I found out that the Reaper HD pale saffron does a pretty good job of matching the Army Painter Daemon Yellow. this will help clean models up prior to the brown wash.

Finally, I experiemented with some checks. I need to clean them up, but here's my first stab:

My goal is not to keep consistently sized checks, but to rather make the checks look good in each panel. I figure to just rely on steady hands and eyes to clean up the lines.

Sunday, I added the flesh wash, and then painted all of the metal. I also added blue base coat to the librarian:

For an ad hoc force, I think we're going to look pretty decent.

Dysartes wrote:Looks like you're making good progress, Polonius - how long do you have left?

The offical adepticon clock shows 16 days. Realistically, I have two more weekends. I can do a little work in the evenings, but I've been working long days, so it's only bits here and there.

And I'm not doing the display board, but I think one of my teammates is.

Speaking of weekday progress...

First highlights! I added a little RMS blood red to all of the read on the infantry. I think that really helps make the weapons and trim pop. I had undercoated them with Ruddy Flesh, a Reaper HD paint, and inked them with brick red ink. This provides a nice strong contrast to the yellow,

Speaking of yellow, I did a little clean up on five of the assault marines. While Army Painter has yet to release the exact match paints for their primers, I found that Reaper Pale Saffron HD does a pretty good good of matching Daemon Yellow. I'm pretty happy with how the yellow looks:

I'm going to (hopefully) add one more edged highlight of a very bright yellow, but I have to remember that my primer is quite bright. I'm used to working up from black, so starting with a bright yellow takes some getting used to.
