Is there a model maybe from a different company or something that is cool and CHEAP I could use as a Thunderfire?

Mantic's Jotun heavy Hailstorm cannon.

^That's what I use.
Three Jotunn hailstorm cannons.

Goes together easily, glues readily with superglue.

Hmm... now I looked on the site and they look alright...

Do you guys have pics of yours? I wanna see what they look like minus the little smurf gunner and some conversion ideas.

Warzone's Bauhaus Bunker expansion comes with 2 card bunkers, and a metal heavy gatling type gun on a tripod, with gunner. About £10 IIRC, From Prince August. They don't seem to sell the gun seperately, but drop them a email as they're quite a friendly outfit.

I'd also like to see some side-by-sides with Mantic's offering, if anyone is willing. I've seen pics with Forge Fathers, but I have no idea how it scales with Marines, let alone a TFC.

Unfortunately probably not cheap, but it would be awesome to go back to basics and use a Thudd Gun

E-bay prices seem to be between £20 and £30, but you might be able to pick it up cheaper somewhere.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Can't do a side-by side of it with the actual TFC, but a marine and rhino I can do.

Used the command console panel from (spare) a land raider and some plasticard to replace the seated dwarf gunner on this one.

Hope those help.

I know you pay different prices for GW stuff over there, but three of these cost me less than the one miscast POS TFC (nobody here got a good one, just not entirely bad castings).

Hell, a three-pack of these from Mantic cost the same as ONE TFC from GW.

Thanks, chromedog. Just checked the respective company sites and, buying direct, a Jotun is a bit less than half the cost of a TFC, in USD ($20 vs. $50). Shipping costs, store discounts, etc. may tip the scales slightly, but the savings are bound to be significant. Something for the OP to consider.

Still, I personally love the look of GW's offering. I may revisit my early scratchbuilding attempt (one of my first 40k projects, and one of the mere handful whose (shameful) results are documented in my gallery), just so I can keep the look I like, if only approximately. I built the thing before I had more than a handful of models and it ended up being way too big. Now that I have a bit more experience with the game's scale and my workbench has expanded beyond a craft knife, superglue, and a stack of old cereal boxes, I think I could make a passable Mk.II. If I get fed up with the scratchbuild or decide I want to field multiples, I now know that Mantic has a decent alternative.

But it isn't a Thunderfire Cannon. A little conversion work should patch that out, though.

The rules for the rapier laser destroyer are awesome too so I'm probably going to get one or two of those so I can use them as TFC or rapier laser destroyers. Shame about not having a techmarine to go with it though..
