Subject: Styrofoam's Grey Knights (11/20 Lava Base update)
|

So while trolling on Kijiji for plastic crack to add to my Red Corsairs I came across a really good deal on Grey Knights.
The post read and had no pictures:
"Greetings. So I have this Draigowing army that needs to go due to what my girl calls... "lifestyle changes". Some of it is still on sprue, so of course you get all the necessary frames. I'm not parting out at this time, gotta take it all. Let me know if interested, I'm willing to travel anywhere on the subway to meet up. Thanks.
2 dreadknights
20 Terminators
1 Draigo
1 Librarian
2 Dreadnoughts with forgeworld twin autocannons (like a boss) "
The reason I bought them was for the Librarian and the dreadnoughts. So a few hours after the price was agreed, I picked them up. Through my excitment I didn't Really look that them to see if they are all there. Cash paid and I ran home to play with them Tee Hee Hee. Unfortunatly my 'Ol Lady wanted me to pick her up. So I had to hide them. She will kill me for buying more! We had dinner... yada yada yada... then I took her home (She still lives with her parents, Freedom!!)
Like a kid in a candy store I went through them:
Draigo and the Librarian
What is going on with finecast? These are my first encounter with them and I'm not happy! there are bubbles hole everywhere. but I can deal with that. I dabble in casting myself. What i cant deal with is the amount of flash on the Librarians face. There is no way I can fix that. if any one has an idea I'm all ears.
Terminators:
I got 20 of these, Most of the bits are still on the sprue
Sprues!
Soo many power weapons!
DreadKnights (2 of them)
Tons of bits in that box above
Dreadnoughts with FW atuocannons (2 of them)
Now when I orginally bought this I assumed I was getting AoBR dreads But instead I got GOLD. 2 venerable Dreads with all the bits
More sprues:
Since I got them I tried to find some information on them. Lists, tactics, etc. I found it very strange that I dont see much out there?! Is there a reason? I also hear rumers that they are Cheese. If thats the case then why are there more of them at tourneys? I dont have the Codex yet but they seem over priced and from what I have looks like 2000pts. I think it would be difficult to have such a low model count. My Red Corsairs: Huron's Wolves (Space Wolves) I usually have 90 marines on the table, so to play only 20 would be difficult for me. Or is it the opposite they are not Cheese and are hard to win against competative lists. I think my Wolves would table them easy!
They are very cool looking models and Im not sure what to do with them. I came up with the 5 options in the poll and I need your help to decide. To be clear Please do not post "I will take them off your hands" Because that not what I'm asking. What I want to know is if they were yours and you already have a very time consuming army that you are dedicated to "what would you do with these GKs?"

Draiowing is good but honestly it's not the end all best army in the world. The army I play has royally messed this army and have many times tabled dragon wing armies. It is nasty on kp missions and has the chance to have a full army of scoring. But against a doUble lash army. They will toss you around unless you drop dreads for the librarian. At which time the oblits pick you off. Now two wound terminators with fnp and wound allocation they are a pain in the butt to kill with none str 8 AP2 guns.
Also about the old lady I'd watch out they get mean when they find your new toys lol. Trust me mine just found the three battle forces from eBay I got for $90. Lol no matter how good of a deal she won't care lol

Keep it! I love the idea of draigowing and über elite armies in general, there is something incredibly epic about 20-odd models going up against vastly superior forces. Also great to get an army finished so quick!
As for cheese, well it's a reasonably successful tournament list (check out blackmoor's blog and embolden40k's for lists, tips and tactics), like pretty much any list there is a paper to its rock.

@ Cgage00 Thanks, If I keep them then I have to buy the codex. I know so little about them. As for the 'Ol Crow, I really hope she cant tell when I get more. lol the "They all look the same factor" @Djn, Im used to large marine armies, like 90 marines. So the idea of only 20 models does interest me. and painting the will be so easy. Do you have links? My searchy fingers are lazy. and it would be nice to have them in this blog for future reference (just in case)

When I made the poll I set it to end in 20 days. Only 8 days left. I could use some more votes.
It looks like a toss up between Keeping and selling. I'm in the same boat, half of me wants to keep them, the other wants to let them go.

So the polls are closed and the verdict is in. 60% for keeping them. No point fighting the masses... I'm keeping them. I think they would be fun to paint. just having them has worked wonders on my Red Corsairs. I can't put down the brush. I have bought Model Air Gun metal and Silver. I also want to add a hint of blue. I haven't decided if i want to use a wash or a paint for the blue. I was thinking: Prime: Black Basecoat: Gun metal Air brushed top 60% Tint: Blue Air Brushed top 50% Highlight: silver Air brushed top 25% Let me know your thoughts or other ideas. Thanks ahead

I didn't have much time this weekend, So I only got a little done. I have primed all the pieces, and gave it a coat of vajello Model Air Gun Metal. Im not happy with it. I guess the primer splattered and added texture to some parts. the Gun Metal Silver looks sparkley. So I sprayed a High Gloss clear coat to smooth it out. hopefully another coat of Gun metal over the clear coat will fix it.

Ya thats true. Its funny I play at a FLGS, We play usually on Sundays and everyone has their own army. When I told them about my GKs they started to hate. I funny part was that I found out later that most of them have a secrete Grey Knight army hidden at home. a GK army they haven't played because of haters. After laughing about it, we decided to have an all out GK tourney. lol.
...Thats another reason Why I keeping them. It should be fun

So after being discouraged by the spackle, I put the grey knights on the shelf for the last while. This weekend I tried again. after a few clear coats, I resprayed a test part of the Dreadknight... i really enjoyed how it turned out
Pics:

To clarify the black parts are not black. It is Gun Metal with a heavy Badab Black wash. It looks clearer in person.
hopefully I will paint more tonight.

Looking good Styro! personally I like the look with the darker metal parts, it's something I do myself, the brighter silver looks good I wouldn't be concerned about a touch of speckle it adds some texture :-) and makes it look like it's a different substance or finish!
how was the air metal to use? i haven't tried them yet as I am in a Army Painter coloured primer phase at the moment and the plate metal is doing me well! but i would like to branch out at some stage and try my hand with some other paints!
Keep up the dreadknight dude i look forward to seeing some more of him done!

Thanks Nerfest, I love your work
Metal is hard to spray. This is my third attempt on this leg. I use Vallejo Model Air paints. The Gun Metal did better with a mix of Gloss Medium. But the Silver was very difficult. the spakle was flying out in chuncks. It ruined my frist attempt and thats why I shelved it.
The second time was better I mixed the paint in pot longer with this:
It was better, but not good enough. I re touched up the Gun Metal over the Silver and tried it again. This time I made a thiner mixture of silver, Gloss Medium and Windex. then I added thin coats of the mixture to blend the two colours.
I hope its is easier next time... I hope I get the mixture right too

Nice deal! And great that none of it was painted, you have a fresh canvas.
On side note my wife gives me grief about my hobbies and stuff. I agreed to sell old stuff, subbuteo, train set stuff, guitars etc.I then can use the proceeds for more 40k. I also preempt for up to 6month in advance with things like "you know the new 6th Ed rules come out this year and I am going to have to buy it." saying this for month on end with increasing frequency really works. It is in fact a well known tactic employed by women enmasse. And what's good for the goose is good for the gander. I am currently doing the same thing for the new box set. Lols

Thanks for the info! as i'm not overly familiar nor am I very good with my airbrush I reckon i'll stick with the plate metal primer (it's quite good) and limit myself to simple shading etc. my style kind of relies on a good base and wash then choice highlights, I was seriously thinking about building a forgeworld heresy era imperial fist army using an airbrush! but I have other plans now... :-)

Thanks Lion,
I bought them on impulse and in secret. lol I bought them to resell them because I got a steal of a price. But now i quite fond of them.
Im just gald that my main army Is the Red Corsairs and I have a few different colour schemes added to the mix. So hopefully when more silver brothers end up poping up she wont know the difference. *fingers crossed*
Bonus on those tips, I haven't bought 6th yet I'll try them out
Automatically Appended Next Post: @nerdfest
I've been thinking of trying the metal primer. my black one left a light fuzz or texture. That didnt help the sparkle.
I've been eyeballing Army painters primer. A Red one for my Corsairs and a Silver one. I'm hoping it will save alot of time.

Yeah plate is closer to mithril than boltgun imo, but shades up nicely with a wash or two, I'm priming some stuff this friday with Plate so i'll snap a pic or two and PM them to you to have a look if you like?

Concerning the face of the Librarian, one fix would be to carve out the entire face/head section of the Libby and then put a trimmed down GK face mask in it's place.
I hate it when people pollute P&M blogs with pictures that don't belong to the OP, so check spoilered below:
I'm not much of a painter, but I think that gets the point across.

@ Nerdfest Yes please @daedalus Thanks, I think that is my only real option. It didn't cross my mind to use a GK helm tho. Good Work. I thought of using one of those bald heads or maybe one from the Dreadknight box. Haven't decided. The Helm Ida looks great. How did you carve yours out? Dremmel? I worried that it is too soft for that As for posting pics on this blog.. I welcome it esp. if it helps me out.

Trying to remember... If I recall correctly, I actually drilled the face out with a large drill bit and a pin vise, cleaned off the edges with an xacto, and then painstakingly whittled down the helm to just basically the face.
I'd avoid the Dremel. I don't know if the friction would do bad things to finecast, but it doesn't seem to like heat.

And the arms:
Little Help: Im not sure what to equip him with? I have two of them So I was wondering If i can get some help on few good DreadKnight Builds? I'll be playing a Draigo List with what I have. So I need 2 Dreadknight builds to complement them.
Any tactic and Links are welcome

The heavy psilencer is useless competitively speaking. The heavy psycannon is better than in 5th and I can actually perhaps see there being a place for one in, say, a 3 dreadknight build.
The hammer's not much cop.
Personally I'd magnetise for incinerator, heavy psycannon and greatsword, becaus ethere may be the odd time you want to run with just an incinerator (which would be m preferred build actually) or naked bar the teleporter.

Follow these two simple rules to ensure a happy Dakka experience:
Rule 1 - to be a proper 40K player you must cry whenever a new edition of the game is released, and always call opposing armies broken when you don't win.
Rule 2 - Games Workshop are always wrong and have been heading for bankrupcy within 5 years since the early 90s. |

Thanks for the pics Nerdfest, was that just one coat? It looks pretty smooth. Did you also give it a wash?
This is the pilot with only one coat of gun metal and one highlight of Silver. (and a wash)
As you can see my problem clearly the black primer left a tiny fuzz and when sprayed it look sparkly and spotty. The same thing happened to the dread knight and was fixed by many coats of gloss and silver. Since this guy is hidden by the harnes I think I will leave it as is
If i can skip all that with armypainter I will.
