Subject: Adeptas Sororitas fan made codex (version 2.0)
Born in the blood soaked period of the Imperium known as the Age of Apostasy, the Sisterhood rised to become the shield of mankind against the horror of the xenos, the mutants and the heretics. Yet, their very first actions outside the walls of their secluded homeworld monastery was to safeguard the Grand Ecclesiarch and enforce his will. Trusting his divine apointed rule after a being tricked, they served him loyaly. The founding Sisters of Battle, abused and misguided, helped this heretical tyrant to keep his throne and hold his palace against the might of a rebelling Imperium. Desperate for a sollution, the Custodes Commander, guardian of the God Emperor himself, seeked out their six leaders to convince them of the madness of their lord and end the conflict. He led them before the Golden Throne to meet with the master of mankind. What happen in there is shrouded in mystery, but, once out, the six Companion rallied their fellow Sisters of Battle and executed their former lord for his abject crimes. To repent for their own actions, the Sisterhood swore alligence to the former rebel leader and new Grand Ecclesiarch, Sebastian Thor, and departed for a long Crusade that would see the fractured Imperium being reunited. The six Companion, Alicia, Katherine, Mina, Lucia, Sylvana and Arabella became legends and living saints of the Imperium; their achievement in battle only surpassed by the Primarchs themselves. Yet, one by one, they all fell to the treatchery of the forces of Chaos, but the Adeptus Sororitas, their legacy endured. Now, the Sisterhood act as guardian of the faith. Fighting the war of the Ecclesiarchy, culling the mutants and the psykers and protecting the Imperium most holy ground. Though sworn to protect and serve the Ecclesiarchy, the Sisterhood is always vigilent of not falling in the same way it did in the past and extand its duty to protect what the Church ought to represent not what or who it is. Sisters of Battle are known for their peerless skills in a unique form of combat that mix mental discipline, faith and prowess in a perfect bland. Armed and armored with weapons and armor worthy of any Space Marine Chapter, they have proven to rival the Adeptus Astartes in excellence both by fighting shoulder to shoulder with them or faced against the monstrous traitor legions, a feet that was thought well beyond that of any human before them. Despite their martial fame, the Sisterhood is mostly composed of healers, scribes and teacher who provide precious services and aid that even the greatest warriors can't provide. Their faith and purity, second only to the fabled Grey Knights, is a powerful bastion against the Ruinous Powers or witchcraft. While the Imperium face its darkest hour, the Sisterhood flame help maintain some hope for mankind survival.
Designer Notes
Spoiler:
While reading this codex entry you will quicly notice that the stats line of the Sisters of Battle have changed making them more dangerous in close combat. You will also notice a few unit that are dedicated to fighting at close combat despite the lack of a transport tank that allows them to do so in an aggresive manner. I decided to turn the focus of the Sisters army from short range firefight to short range firefight and counter assault. I choose to do this for three reasons.
The first one is fluff related. According do what I have read, the original Sisters of Battle (the Daughters of the Emperor) were a monastic cult based on the remote and low tech agri-world of San Leor. There, they practice a type of worship based on spiritual and martial purity. This means they were exactly like Shaolin Monks and Nuns of our world. They must have been amongst the most extraordinary martial artist in the galaxy and the fact that Vandire decided to pay them a visit to gain their services has bodyguards seems to prove this right; especially when you realise that San Leor is also in the middle of nowhere. Considering that despite the fact they modernised their training greatly under the tutelage of their new masters, they did retained most if not all of their former traditions, it seems evident that Sisters of Battle should still be amongst the greatest martial artists produced by humanity and their stats and gear should reflect that.
The second one is based on their esthetic. Sisters of Battle armour are, if you ignore the «boob plates», very reminescent of actual early 16th century full plates. Their armour and their decorations is made to make them look like a gothic and science fiction version of Jeanne d'Arc. In fact the entire Ecclersiarchy incarnate the most gothic aspect of the Imperium of Mankind and in that regard close combat weapons, especially the chainsword, are a common thing. The Sisters themselves are designed to evoque some sort of grim fururistic paladin a bit like the Grey Knights. Thus adding element like power sword and Storm shield wearing Sisters or other bringing elaborate banners seems like a natural evolution of their design and fits really well with their general esthetic. A newcomer to the hobby should think that the Sisters of Battle are knightly angelic women fighting in space.
The Third one is based on their tabletop capacities. Sisters of Battle are a relatively low count model army (their basic troops being around 12 pts) with medium firepower and very short range. Their weapons are average strength and a mediocre AP. Their only high strength good AP weapons are meltaguns which they have in great quantity, but can prove to be difficult to use. In close combat they offer a performance similar to that of Imperial Guards without the capacity to form large blobs and no numbers to absorb the caualty with enough strength to strike back making them very vulnerable to the tactic unless they arm themselves with flamers (which they must take instead of their melta weapons). Charging sisters is very easy and defeating them even more. Improving their resistence to close combat would allow them to be more fonctionnal on he tabletop without transforming them in a power house considering recent eddition of 40K favor assault only has a clean up strategy.
This codex aims at making the Sisters of Battle an army characterised by its use of elite medium infantry supported by light, well armed and fast tanks. It gives them a style of play based on aggressive, but strategic mouvement phases to deliver a powerful blow in the shooting phase and a strong counter attack in close combat. Overall, the army is rather friendly to beginners and with the quantity of support unit, special rules and Act of Faith, it can provide an interesting gamming mechanic for more advanced players. The formations are simple and based around the various theme of the army: excellence, sacrifice, discipline, aggressivity and quiet heroism. They are simple to use and provide bonus that affect directly the units deployed. Coordination, timing and careful use of Act of Faiths should be required to be successful wih such an army.
Play Testing Notes
Spoiler:
Unfortunately, I only play tested those rules in my gamming group on two occasions. Ironically, since I do not own a Sister of Battle army myself, I never got to enjoy them in person (so to speak). Thought I did play against these rules once and served as an GM of sort during the second test. The first battle was using a Celestian Strike Force against a Nurgle theme Chaos Space Marine Warband that I borrowed from a friend and the second was a Sisterhood Phalanx against a aerial Tyranid army. The Sister gained a short victory against the Nurgle Chaos Marine thanks to some lucky dice roll that allowed the tanks to deliver their payload and lost against the Tyranid due to a lack of anti-air support and poor armor save roll. It still was enough to teach me a few lessons about this army. The first one is that despite the ability to reroll fail to wound roll in close combat, Sisters struggle to make a dent in toughness 5 units with good armor save like Plague Marine. Their only option would be Repentia with evicerator chainsword, but they are very fragile. In that spirit I have given the option for the Celestian to take Executor chainsword. The said Celestian proved to be very good units. Sister Virtuous are rather impressive and with the ability to force their opponent to reroll their successful roll to touch, they can prove to be challenging to defeat even with excellent close combat units. With a special character leading them, they can truly be terrifying. This leads me to think that Sister Angelus could be one of the most frustrating, but excellent, sponge unit. To compensate for their lack of anti-air unit outside of the Exorcist and their Rephaim fighter, I have added an Act of Faith to boost a little bit their damage output against flyer. It's not major, but it can help in a pinch. Since, even with the addition of the Virtuous Sisters as bodyguard, I have added an Act of Faith unique to Canoness and Palatin o improve their combat capacity. The army is also more fragile than I expected since toughness 3 and small unit size, due to the immolator lower transport capacity, makes them vulnerable to the easily spammable plasma weapons and ubiquitous autocanon/multilaser/scatter laser/ devourer on monstruous creature. Hording Novice with Hospitalier can prove to be rather efficient, but lacks firepower. Loosing Act of Faith, which are very important, is also a terrible news, since very few units can perform reasonnably well without them. It's also easier than one might think or hope, making Angelus, Seraphim and holy icon very valuable. The most notorious exception being Vigile who just tend to sit objective and try not to attract to much attention. The new stormbolter and the stalker bolter both proved to be excellent special weapon and well worth their points.

These really look like toned down Movie Sisters. I think you over did it with trying to define the Sisters of Battle by just throwing rules at them.
Why would they have 6+ reanimation Protocols? Why do they hate Chaos more than every other Imperial Faction? Psykers Maybe, but not Chaos in general. I also find stubborn on all Sisters objectionable, because it makes them seem less human.
There are also several unintentional rules contradictions you made. The last Warlord trait is completely useless, seeing as they already have a better 6+ save that can be used all the time, and doesn't stack.
You gave the Exorcist Skyfire meaning it's now only useful against Flyers. Interceptor doesn't mean it gets to fire against ground targets with normal BS in 7th edition. Also why do you want to make the Exorcist, one of the most powerful tanks in the game for its points also able to take out flyers? There would be no reason to take any other unit in a Heavy Support slot.
Non Combatant is just silly, No one in the 41st Millennium adheres to the Geneva Convention. Why would a Sister Hospitaller get a special Get Out of Jail Free Card when it comes to challenges, but still be able to attack the grunts of a unit? Why would my Chaos Lord not kill a Sister Dialogous the first chance he gets?
I dislike the idea of a Squad of Sisters losing Acts of Faith after failing a single Test of Faith and only being allowed to use them Turn 2. A key unit losing their Acts of Faith turn 2 could cost you the game.
Did Repentia really have to lose their Mistress? I want to see more Sororitas models not less.
Why would the Immolator be an assault vehicle? No rhino pattern vehicles are assault vehicles. It's also 100% better than a regular rhino in almost every conceivable way and only costs 20 more points. No other Imperial faction has such easy access to an assault vehicle. It's way undercosted and over powered.
I would go with non-order specific Relics, similar to how none of the Relics in Codex: Space Marines are tied to a specific chapter.
I find power-armour models on horses to be ridiculous, but that's more personal taste.
the new Shield of Faith rule serves to represent a form of miraculous protection that Sister enjoys. When all else fails, faith (or luck) is their last defence. Sister have enjoyed «miraculous» invulnerable in their precedent incarnations in a way or another.
On the subject of hatred, Sisters of Battle are religious extremist. They are the most faithfull scions of the Imperium and the strongest adherant of the Imperial Creed. Much more than any Guardsmen or Space Marine. They live and breathe psalms that advocate the destruction of anything Chaos (or Xenos) related. At it's core, The Imperial Creed is a violent religion that promotes war, intolerence and hatred. By all account, the most regular citizen of the Imperium is a firghteningly hateful person when it comes to xenos, mutants, psykers and heretics. Sisters are the most dedicated of them so it seems logical to me that they would have this rule. I would also be of the opinion that Space Marine should have Hatred (Chaos Space Marine).
The last warlord trait seems to be rather weak and useless considering it cannot be used with the more usefull Shield of Faith unless you put your Warlord in the same squad than an Hospitalier which gives the warlord Feel no Pain (4+) or if it uses the last Act of Faith which could give a Feel no pain (3+ or 5+). In many circomstances this is better than the 6+ ward save of Shield of Faith.
Non combattant is not rule design to represent the fact the Sister woudn't be target, but more that she will never leed a squad. Duels also prohibit you from challenging models with special or heavy weapon even if it would be a very good idea. Considering that those Sisters aren't supose to put themselves in danger. You can consider that they probably stay away has much has possible from Chaos Lords or ork Warboss.
For the Exorcist, this is an attempt to transform it in some of the anti-air tank that Space Marines enjoy. You will notice that it's armor has been decreased. Right now, I haven't finished the armory but intented to change a bit the stats line of the exorcist launcher (range 48'', S: 8, AP: 1, heavy 3). How would you price an exorcist with those capacity?
For the chances of loosing At of Faith, I will try to add some option to mitigate a little bit the problem with an optionnal piece of equipment, but I would like to keep the concept of loosing the Act of Faith. They can prove to be very powerful. If they were to reliable, I would see that has OP.
The Immolator is an assault vehicule because designing an assault army with no way of getting in assault range is a mistake. Considering the short range and speed of this tank, making it an assault vehicule seemed like a good choice. I would agree on the price beeing to low. I should raise it 65 pts. Each Imperial faction should have it's special snow flake. This is one of theirs and technically Imperial Guard have salamander light tanks from Forge World.
Crusader steeds are technically supposed to servitor genetically modifed horse. They should look more like cloakwork steed from Pathfiinder or DnD if you are familiar with those games. This way it makes more sense for them to bear the weight of someone in power armour and enough speed to be usefull. Of course it's my opinion.
Thanks for the Imput I will give it a thought (and bring the Mistress back, I forgot her)!

This is an interesting reboot of the Sisters as a more medieval-feeling force -- and it's really a reboot, not just an update or expansion, because it changes some things that have been standard throughout all editions so far.
Universal WS:4 and Stubborn would go a ways to repairing the Sisterhood's weakness in melee, although with Ministorum Priests granting Fearless to (potentially) five squads per detachment, it's not as big a change as one might thing. Restoring I:4 for Sisters elites is also a significant but not game-breaking change. So is Hatred:Chaos. And all these changes seem fluff-justifiable to me.
I also like the buffing units -- Dialogus, Hospitaller, and Famulous. Novices intermixed with regular Battle Sisters in the same squad, a la Black Templars, is also intriguing.
I have some doubts:
- Unlimited Acts of Faith (after turn one) drawing from a very short list seems potentially overpowered and a bit dull at the same time.
- I don't see the need for a separate melee-oriented Angelus unit as opposed to just boosting the Celestians for both melee and shooting.
- I think the twin-super-melta Predator may be overpowered, or at least overshadow our lovely Exorcists.
- Immolators definitely shouldn't be Assault Vehicles; no Rhino variants are.
- Giving Repentia armor rather defeats the purpose of them being suicide troops.
- Still not sold on Giant Cyborg Horses.
- And of course point costs will be a huge wrangle which I can't even begin to get into now.
In general my own vision of the Sisters emphasizes the modern military aspects rather than the medieval ones, but I certainly appreciate your take.

Thanks for the heads up. I will see for some touch up for the Predator Purgator (AKA twin-super-melta Predator). I will knock out the Immolator assault vehicule special rule.
For the Act of Faith, I linked that choice to a little thread about the nature of Act of Faith I have past in the background question. Most Sister player were viewing it has non magical abilities based on training, faith and discipline. I decided to give them the feel of «being in the zone» if you know about high level sports. That's why they are rather powerful and you can loose them.
For the Sister Crusader, I first thought about sisters on bikes with power-lance and shield a bit like those Star wars Droid on jetbike in the anime they produced a few years back. Then I realised that almost everybody had bikes so I thought, for originality sake, about horses like Imperial Guards, but it wouldn't fit with power armor wearing soldiers. So I thought about clockwork steeds. Like Thunderwolf, it's a bit goofy and «medieval», but it fit the univers and can make for impressive models. Maybe I will put the option for both so that both world are happy.
PS: I did read your fan-made codex before making this one and found it excellent. I did stole one of your idea (the Vigile Sisters). I was especially impressed by your Ecclesiarchical units which are both numerous and interesting. Thanks for the help.

Ok, I have made a few upgrades. Immolators have lost their assault vehicule special rule and Sister Crusaders are now on bikes. Palatine and Canoness have access to Artificier Armour. Sororitas Sarissa have been nerfed a little bit and three new weapons were added. I have completly modified the Sisters Angelus Squads from close combat veteran to support unit. I have added two new units: the Sister Virtuous and the Sister Executionners. The first ones are top of the line close combat unit that serves a bit like a squad of Space Marines Company Champion and the second squad has assassins and close combat stealth unit. To stay in the 7th eddition mindset, I have also added a detachment rules and a couple of formations to add some flavor to the list. Enjoy this 2.0 version. Thanks for those who helped me with the prescedent version!

I especially like the Angelus as a buffing unit -- there's a lot of good buff stuff in your fandex overall -- and the fluff of the Executioners as the "dirty war" specialists who must constantly repent for what they do.
I'm finding it a little hard to sort through the new special rules being in one place, the new weapons in another place, and the units that use them in a third. Just because GW often does this maddening kind of layout, that doesn't mean you have to! I think the best model is Forgeworld data sheets online, which have all the rules, weapon stats, and so on right under the unit's stats.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, censers that produce smoke screens and can be slung like flails are also awesome.

I will try to make the entire thing easier to read by moving special rules specific to a single (or two) unit in their entry and do the same thing with special weapons. I am not very good when it comes to edit forum pages so i can't garantie success. Thanks for the feed back!
