well i have around eight of these so i could add two to each sponson bubble... what do you think? would that be a good way to do a viewpoint for the gunners inside?
here is only one "viewpoint" shown to each sponson...
I Think the idea of adding viewports is great, but I'm not such a fan of those shields: partially the style, but mostly the placement. I can imagine trying to shoot a gun having to aim down the side of it. What about more of a view slit right above the gattlings.
your point is most valid... damn... also i did a quick mockup with two shields side by side the guns... and it looks like a nose with too round eyes...not what you would want to be having with when you want to install the fear into the hearts of the enemy... argh... back to the drawing board^^
Generally the idea is to embrace the spherical shape by making the whole surface sorta view port, reinforced by some overlaying metal stripes, with rivets, of cause
Not necessary, I believe I've seen some brass etchings for ship models that can be ripped for that...
And I'm sure Dave can come up with some useful advice on pc
Alternatively the metal tubing from tomato paste or toothpaste tubes? Also, btw, looking good there chief, and remember, Oskar has already proven nimble-fingered if yours are a bit too chunky!
Okay, I'm going to throw my two-pence in the mix...
As much as I like the idea of these sponsons being simialr in style of the Millenium Falcons quad laser view ports, the design element just doesn't ring true for me on this beast... This is a tank, it's made of thick, heavy metal and is meant to be impenetrable. I just don't see a glass dome (even if it's bullet proof glass / plastic) design working - I think it would look odd and tbh out of place... Also, doesn't bullet proof glass craze when hit, and the plastic would get pitted to the point of no longer being clear - and that's just from small arms fire?
I'd scratch the shield idea as well - looks too much like a crazy Muppet...
(That was a fun image search with SafeSearch turned off - Gonzo !!)
How about designing the gun view similar to this image? That is, build the view port around the guns and the actual view point would be the flat just above the gun, I imagine it would have some sort of flap to close when the vehicle isin motion and not firing...
Just don't use a circular design, otherwise we're back to a Muppet !
I do agree that a tank with glass or whatsoever is nonsense and has no purpose on the field, but since when 40kish design became of purpose and sense? those concepts worth only as much as the ideas behind fit the frame of the verse.
Not that I insist on anything here
I like the idea of the view point but not sure on the position maybe if you can explain why you have chosen that spot I can make more sense of it.
The choice of weapon is rather nice and pulls in the steam punk feel again
If your still thinking glass dome the other way to achieve it is by using another ping pong ball, by this I mean draw the basic design on to another half ball (the frame design) then carefully cut it out and stick that over the top of the previous one
Also have you not heard of self healing glass, the new thing in 40k
I just realized that this gun reminds me the ion planetary cannon from SW ep 5. The one rebels used to breech the blockade...
And there comes the question I should have asked at the first place; how out supposed to work in your design? I mean is it a spherical turret fully and freely rotating in the socket or is the hemisphere just a bumped outer shell? The answer will determine everything else...
i like these discussions!
first let me cover one question... OF COURSE the dome of the sponson will not contain ANY glass... never really thought in that direction at all... the mere look...the webbed look of the strings of metal bands holding it together appealed to me... BUT...
it is a spherical turret fully and freely rotating in the socket
!!!! that!!! i imagine it to be fully rotating...the viewpoints will make this even more clear for the audience later on... as i have added now four of these hemispherical sponsons, each gun is pointing in a very different position... and the viewpoints will show so even more... i was rather referring to the seat where han solo or luke might be sitting in the falcons turrets... these "balls" are meant to be fully movable like an eyeball in its socket... one of the guns is even attacking supposedly an aircraft in my imagination... the the gunner thus being tilted in a more than average position...
at shaso:
i have thought that a camera would easily solve the whole issue...BUT... i don´t do easy... and i want a fully functioning turning and tilting and whatnot turret for that sponson...so the view issue has to be self reliant... beside... camera technology is so NOT- steampunky in my opinion...
at LDD... nice one here :
Also have you not heard of self healing glass, the new thing in 40k
but no cheating in my imagination is allowed
and

now that is a slick idea mister... why didn´t i think of that one on my own??? darn... but alas too late...
as i atm imagine the ball to be fully metal... a sort of casted sphere that gets installed in the socket... glistening with oil on the sides and all that...
at graven...
Alternatively the metal tubing from tomato paste or toothpaste tubes? Also, btw, looking good there chief, and remember, Oskar has already proven nimble-fingered if yours are a bit too chunky!
lol...eventually all my kids will join their dads empire^^ that is the master plan and nice idea for future materials... i still choke on the idea storag gave me for magnetizing the arena earlier... choped up tin cans and hammered flat... there is so many stuff i need to try out...
so thanks for that idea... i think i also will try this material for banners soon... someone mentioned that in that context to me earlier too...
at ruglud...:
you definatly understood my ideas and concerns to the very point... gonzo...(also see? i gave you a nice, probably earlobe warming ten minutes ) actually i more thought of mickey mouse... but that´s all the same...^^ i wont venture that direction any more... it felt wrong the second i made these pics...
and as mentioned above... the glass for a bigger surface than an actual viewpoint is totally out of the question... it would be a joke tank if i would make it this way...^^ and the british army sure has no humor it´s aware of
your CAD picture is something most helpful for me... i think i have to figure out a way to make this paneled look for my sponsons...many thanks for that...
by the way.... many thanks (belated at that) for your many referrence pics to the tank tracks of different designs... you are turning out as a major helpful thinktank member...and that is no sweet talk from my part here!!! as i do lots of research for my projekts but lack often the technological terms my searches are often fruitless... so i am very thankful and dependent of my nongerman and english native friends!
on a related note... no updates for now... i am a bit in a critical idealess phase... i am eager to attach the tracks to the body of the tracks systems... but atm i have not enough surfaces to stick the tracks on... and i fear i might loose or breack something .... at first i have to kinda fill an empty space to have room/space to stick the tracks on... how i should get to this... i am at a loss for ideas...
see this:
the gap between the two "walls" of the tracksystem is what is too thin for a glueing connection atm... so i am now thinking about how to change that... L-shaped rods to build up a resting place are hard to cut atm , because... i have no miter master like dave... i need to fix that^^ but for now... i am constantly scratching my head for ideas....
Thanks VIk, I'm happy to help. But what with 'gonzo' and 'glistening with oil on the sides', I think this discussion is heading to 50 Shades of Grey territory... I don't think we want to go there lol...
On a serious point - for the tracks to sit properly, what about getting some plastic plumbing pipe - easy to cut if you have a hacksaw and just use masking tape to make sure you have a straight line to guide you around... alternatively, if you have thin enough styrene sheets, say 0.25mm, then you can fabricate a tube - similar to my attempts at a t-hawk engine - cut two similar sized pieces of styrene (one a few mm longer), then stick together so they overlap, carry on gluing so that there is an inner and outer layer of plasticard forming a tube - hope that makes sense, if not maybe the images below will help? I wrapped mine around a cardboard tube to get the right size (cardboard tube was from the middle of a tinfoil / aluminium roll)
Spoiler:
Let me know if this is all just gibberish, maybe I can mock some proper tutorial some photos up in the morning?
L-rod would be the easiest way... but cutting it atm is giving me a hell of problems atm...
ruglud...
do you mean to use the plastic pipe as a sort of train rail? hopefully that is the right mental image... i just had a quick look at your gallery... dunno why i didn´t yet followed one of your threads regularly??? i think i know most of your stuff already tho from the gallery? your buzz and your hellboy for instance...
i will try to get this idea of yours working... i planned a visit to my local hardware store anyways today... we´ll see what suplies might i can get a hold of that might hopefully be helpful for this project...! thanks a heap!
oh... and well... a dirrrrty mind like mine... tends to go down the gutter once or twice a second

I'm thinking more that you use the pipe similar to the tanks road wheels, i.e the length of the pipe goes between the walls.
That way you have something to attach the tracks to and will keep the it all taught - you may not need the glue the tracks either as the linkages of the Heng Long tracks have removable pins...
Just throwing in my two cents, and maybe too late, but concerning the gun ports/balls...
Why not periscopes? Its steampunk after all... Just little tubes jutting out above the guns, with clear crystal lenses?
MauS wrote: Just throwing in my two cents, and maybe too late, but concerning the gun ports/balls...

But notice they are true 28mm and not heroic so they will be on the small side.
Still cool looking minis.
oh yeah... very good looking minis of that company... never saw a scale comparrision shot tho... hmmm *trods off to do some research...*

Instead of cameras, I should have said scopes

and thanks for the publicity
as i said... credit where credit is due... shame your diorama thread is not commentable in... as it is a bit on the dusty side (nudge, nudge, nudge )
as for the tracks... and the wheels... well i tried my best to get the wheeled look right...and failed miserably... so i thought differently again... so i went to the hardware store and got me a nice suply of thin and smaller wooden rods... angular ones... now i have a nice resting surface for the tracks... and after mounting the first track on a finisched tracksystem... i see this was worth it... later on i show you how i did it...you have to take into account that i am a really miserable guy with a saw... no even cuts... naaaawww.... i am completly untrained... but i got the job done eventually^^... now the second tracksystem is in the making... almost finshed too...
also i took a new step into the viowpoint issue... i recently got me some glassbeads... half relief ones... which have a crystal/diamond shaped look...i think if i paint some metal bands on these then i am set....your thoughts?
by the way... ruglud... the tracks are not glued down... just closed very thightly... but they are unable to "turn" as it is strechted tight... we´ll see if this works as planned...
here are the pics...:
and this is how i created this "sub-structure" ...
cheap and effective...

Great look Vik! Angle it some more. The lens should always be pointing down the barrel(s) of the gatling no? It looks like it's pointing up at the sky a bit.
Ahh, yes, I see your approach now for the tracks. Simple and effective. Nice idea for the gunsights and agreed with others suggestions on how to progress on them...
Funny you should mention my IG dio, was looking at it the other day and working out what to do next. Think it will stay under the dust sheet for a little longer though as I'm determined to get the t-hawk done. I am inspired though to drag it back to life eventually...

Vik, I've been looking over and over that view screen on the turret and the more I look, the less I like it, sorry :( As said above it's too upward and make the turret look like some cyclopean pinocchio, which its kinda funny and would look fitting on an ork vehicle, but here I doubt =/
besides here some questions that troubles me :
- Why the window its circular at all? That's strange for a tank and adds to the "eye" image
- How the gunner supposed to navigate the gun effectively withsuch limited view? No side view, no looking down. That kinda negates all the benefits of the "round" design don't you think?
So maybe you should make several, say 3 or 4, arc/sector-shaped view windows around the gun barrel? Like on the actual tanks but curved and circularly arranged?

LOL... honking? i have thought about adding bells... but horns....hmmmmm
yes... with modern tanks you could get away with this...as you have lots of more sights and cams and other means of getting to know where the target is standing... but with older tanks i guess they would like to have a little more seeing abilities...?
Looking good so far Vik. I think Storag meant kind of a Tie fighter cockpit idea around the gun. Or like those WWII Liberators had as turrets... Multiple windows, but in the case of your tank only directly around the guns... Small, angled, circular. And small windows are more easily armoured. And seriously, in a galaxy full of plasteel and ferrocrete, don't you think they can make bulletproof, armoured, scratch-free, safety-glass?
My glasses are scratch free, and they were made in '05. They're unfortunately not bulletproof...
Anyways, i'm sure you'll figure out a solution...
How about a slit above the gun extending round the surface of the sphere.
Rectangular.
Like a pillbox.
Very low-tech, steampunk-like.
Would give the gunner say, 30degrees horizontal vision.
You could do lots of rivets around the edge...
and i am more attached to viktorian age materials than all that hightech materials of the 40th millenia... steampunk doesn´t make that much sense with such stuff... (ok...granted...sense is the totaly wrong reason^^) but i like older classic material better...
as DR H put it... the slit with rivets... that is probably the best idea...now i need some time to get this done... hopefully after friday time wont be that much of an issue... school life by then will cease to get in the way much... as on 21st school will pause...and work too^^
earlier ago someone said i should use a halphsphere of that ball to shape the gunmount out of... i bet that will be the route to follow for the slit too... all in one go^^
A Bradley gunner had one sight, facing forward. It looked like abig metal box on top of the turret. Around the hatches and in the rear of the vehicle, we have glass periscopes, that did not move. You kind of switched periscopes to look in a different direction. Our commander had his own turret control and could look in a different direction than the gunner, and could move the gunner's sight over to his own targeting area. But that was it, and to be honest, it didn't seem like our modern tank (actually an infantry fighting vehicle) had a lot of options to see out. Most of the time, we saw out by me, the driver, opening my hatch all the way, ratcheting my seat up until I was almost shoulders out, and our commander standing up on his seat and looking out.
I think MauS and Mars did the job for me while I was sleeping =) The thing on the Marses sketch is very close to my idea. I'll submit my own a bit later.
Oh and pistol/rifle ports with slide over plates too! nice! You can see the limited vision portrs for the MGs there Vik, and the side slits for looking out side the tank.
Right fellas, clearly vik's robot-clone has short-circuited due to too much awesome, I'll get Iustis to make a MKIII, with (obviously) more rivets, and we'll see if it can handle the awesomeness next time round.
You know what, the more I look at it the more I wonder if the style of these sponsons is right? I like the idea but I just can't get it right in my head... Here's an idea for the sponsons, I don't really like them on a pred, but on a steampunk IG tand I think they would look the part...

This seems to me to be Deimos pattern wanna-be. I think the sponsons are too domed out. if they were a little bit more shallow I think it would be ok......
well mates... work, family and varying health issues prevented me from being with you guys...
thanks for all the talk and helpful referrence pics mates.... all greatly apreciated! after a sudden flash of inspiration i remade the sponsons viewpoints....with bases... slotta bases!!!
take a look for yourself...:
now the guns are more "connected" to the sponsons bulk...later on i will add rivets f course... then i think i am with a rather sounds design... your thoughts?
also now that i have attached both tracksystems... i had to reshape the hull of the mainbody... wheelbase was way to high... so i added more room in the lower regions...wheelbase still too high in your view? mini for referrence
and here are some more impressions of the tank in its current look...
atm i am working on some track covers for the upper section... hopefully i can show you these soon too...
so here are the pics...:
well cheers and thanks for still staying with me^^
I like the slotta idea, that's really worked well. As for clearance at the bottom well you don't want folk running under your tank to shoot it! But, no clearance is fine.
I have to say I like the general look, although I have to say it would make a dam fine ork truk I can see why you used the slotted bases for view points.
However I think you could have scratched built a view point just as well, however I will hold out till you finish the look as I am sure you will do a dam fine job.
thats a really biug tank about how many people do you think it takes to operate that? I know it is a super heavy was just wondering how much crew you think you would need for the beast.
I love the addition to the top of the hull... is it still going to have the landing pad? And the slot bases work great on those sponsons... just need rivets and if you feel like it could use a little visor at the top of the slot.

i have as much little clue of that stuff as you ... tho i bet it takes quite a big crew to operate... also as this is still a steam propelled vehicle you have to think about the amount of coal shovlers that need to work inside... lots^^ i bet lots will be the most exact amount of crew members needed^^
Meade wrote:I love the addition to the top of the hull... is it still going to have the landing pad? And the slot bases work great on those sponsons... just need rivets and if you feel like it could use a little visor at the top of the slot.
the landing pad atm is in great discussion with myself... and i am a bit unsure to wether include it now... or to use it as a seperate piece of terrain... i have toyed with that pad and the tank for quite some time... and everytime the position shifts ever so slightly... or if at all it will get included... but what i liked about this tank from the beginning was that feel of the crassus theme... you know... a death star unit... who doesn´t want to build such a badass unit??? i bet everybody wants to do that for once^^...

Reading over this thread has gotten me to looking at pics of WWI tanks. Primarily the British tanks because that seems to be what the GW tanks are based on. You could almost call their design aesthetic "Imperial Steampunk."

I'd go with humpback, looks more sturdy for heavy aircraft to land on, but this is a tank over 38,000 years after the era which it's based off, anything's possible

thanks for the tracksguards... and actually i am more fond of the humpback version too... looks more sturdy and more likley to me too... and gets the whole look a bit less compressed looking...also i think it stll needs a bit of thickening up nevertheless... and the hatch ontop of the pad is a must... already planned! count on that

atm i am working on beefing out the pad as it was too thion looking... hopefully i have time tomorrow to make some more progress and some pics even... i need to get me soon some more materials and some tools to cut PC in way thinner and cheaper bands than for the price of the evergreen rods... 1mm and 2mm rods i need atm but my cutting abilities are lacking quite a bit... i will soon get me some nice planking cutters... and that mitermaster dave showed in his thread to really get some more detailmaking started...

lol... you brits have some amazing testing qualities...! brilliant... i had such a crimped face when the guy was getting the second tats... ouch... bloody ouch... sadly they didn´t show th second later one
and dave... quite a good looking model... i see direct use for our hobby with this one... could be even in scale^^
well, well, well... looks like we all have yet again survived one of those apocalypsy thingies^^
and for the record... like LDD stated... that aquilla... it was one made by dave... he sent it to me a lillion years ago... it was sitting idle by for way too long... to tell a truth... the whole übertransport was a project i started to finally use this nice pice and honor daves work... so yeah... skalk... go and ask dave... maybe he can make another one of these for you...
and well... xmas sure is here... our oldest happened to find out about the santa scam... he walked in while his mum and me where packing presents for tomorrow...so now he is one of the grown ups... the clever guy seems to have known for longer than my wife and me would have known it seems... and he planned to have a peek at us while packing up presents... kids these days^^
as for the thread moving on on glacier like time scales... er... dunno about that one... as this is a new update... a big one...
just to get a good pic into the main paige... here is a spoiler...:
Spoiler:
but a good update begins for real with a suply drop...
having almost depleted my resources of PC i was aiming for a dead end of the project... this couldn´t be... so i went shopping at a local hobby store and got me two square meters worth of shiney white plasticcard... my son felix helped me even in the store (see above story of that clever son...) to cut it down to a transportable size...)
also i got me some other nice tools and stuff... see for yourself...:
quite a big amount of plastic goodness... and all for only 20 €s... not too shabby, eh?
then i got me this holepunch here that now helps me to create rivets with a diameter of 1.5mm ...the easy way^^...
the cogwheel above might be a new way for me to make rivets in a shorter time even... if i get the cog to stay in line ... earlier tries have been not that promising...
well... now onto the real stuff this update is all about...
regarding the still bland looking landing pad... well it isn´t bland looking anymore... also it is now almost finished... only rivets are needed now at this stage...
see for yourself...:
the underside now is connected with a sort of cabin... it now looks a bit like an upper deck of a ship... i think i will eventually revisit the airship... this look seems to be an apropriate way to fix certain issues i had back then... with soldier for comparrision...:
then i went and worked also on the steampunky parts...
and created new viewpoints on the front... and started working on a big frontal ramp/ hatch...
so this is then again how the tank currently looks:
what do you think?
and inmygravenimage... you think it now looks like a tank wearing a hat still? my wife made some likewise comments...so you´d be not the only one on that front...
That's looking awesome Vik.
The slot bases work well as view ports.
The sides of the landing pad look great, nice detailing. One thing, which I hope isn't a problem, are the walls around the edges ok for things to land on it without catching a wing or engine on?
Cabin looks the part.
I like the steampunky parts (as you put it). What are they made of?
Dr H wrote:That's looking awesome Vik.

well i wanted to make the walls a bit taller to have a sort of kind of protection for the embarking troops of landing flyers... when this build is finished i will start with a fitting flyer... some helicopter style thingy and i think i will taylor it to the landing pads needs
Cabin looks the part.
I like the steampunky parts (as you put it). What are they made of?
the crown parts are made from chrismas balls... the thingies that holds the "string"/ hooks...
Spoiler:
Generally it's looks a very cool tank/platform.
Looking forward to where this is going.
monkeytroll wrote:Nice work vik!
The improvements to the pad are great, nice detailing on the side walls, and the cabin support is a good touch.
I see much rivet-zen coming your way....
oh yeah----lots of time to master the art of riveting^^
LOL... thanks Dr H... well you gotta share those little finds^^... by the way... the rest of those smokestacks are just pipes from a felt pen^^...the only fitting tube i had around...
also... since i now used the crowns... the baubles... i used the halves for the sponsons... plastic xmas baubles for the win!
Ah. Pen lids are awesome. Clearly mrs von domm has excellent skills in assessment of things that seem unbalanced.... How about a couple of pistons or rails running between the base of the pad and the tank fairing, as if it could possibly raise it up?
i´ll have to see about the balance issue... i have thought about some pistons as well... dunno if this might be a bit too late tho... if you want to... you could do a lil mockup pic for me... to help me get it fixed
lone dirty dog wrote:The detail is coming on great mate and pulling it al together, once again your resourcefulness has come to hand.
For a minute I thought those were crown Lego pieces lol, the pad detail is amazing and the layering is spot on.
I think this is going to look really quite bad ass in the end
Just one thing have you considered some kind of support coming from the under side of the pad to the cabin ? Just looks a little top heavy.
thanks mate... yeah i think i need to see about the top heavyness... my plan was also to make the landing platform with cabin to be optional... so that i dont glue it tigether to the tanks main hull?! i will make some support beams...
Some simple angled girders would the trick, plus you don't have to glue it to the underside of the pad just add locating sections for the beams to sit up against.
That way you can still remove the cabin if you wanted happy Chrimbo to you and the family
Very cool Vik! I still can't get my gak together when it comes to scratchbuilding things that fit together like they should! but you seem to have become quite the master! :-) also, any hints as to where you scored your 1.5 punch? my attempts asofar are less than stellar and I resorted to using glue globules! or gluebules as i like to call them!
Vik was going to send you a christmas card but i could noit read your hand writing so i guess a happy holidays on dakka will have to do any way have a good one.
That's awesome Vik! I think it looks like the pad is an interchangable part option for that class of tank. Put some grab-irons for a crane hook somewhere on the top, then it will look more like it Yeah, I'll need to cut some more cricut-ed aquillas- I owe LDD a couple too. Merry Christmas!
so this is then again how the tank currently looks:
what do you think?
You might think this is moving as slow as a glacier, but I think it's going in leaps and bounds! I'm particularly impressed with the level of detail on the landing pad and the section just under it
My only CC is that it seems that the pad sits too far back. What if it moved up to cover the top turret?
Keep up the great work!
Rawson
P.S. I seem to remember promising you some goggled heads a while back. I should finish those and get them to you!
I think this is coming on in leaps and bounds myself and the quality is pretty dam good, the idea was rather extreme to find a use for the Aquila that Dave did and sent him, but never the less is turning into a work of art.
The only thing worrying me is will he finish it LOL
captain imperial... he is a role model of the victorian guard... he is straight as an arrow, and the model could count as a commissar for all that i care... or just for the pure pleasure it gave me to build it... lots of cutting and reglueing...

cheers, vik
hah, nice work!
what's he going to have on the shield, though? An imperial eagle?
hmmm... still thinking about that... at first my intention was to make a five pointed star... like cap A... but that seems a bit pointless for my own needs... so a more british theme would be needed... maybe i go for a lion?
Nice work mate how many kits have you used for this love the fact you used the feet of the militia really gives it an edge
As for the shield like the lion concept, I was thinking if you are going for the Victorian steam punk vibe maybe a large cog with 2 smaller ones in side it
Good luck mate with the comp, although this is looking great so far
Love the cog idea, but might be a bit too mechanicus-y...
I would say a british flag to match your tanks, but it might be a bit too close to Captain America...
well... i don´t really see the need to have cogwheels on a shield... in a military context you woulnt want to show yourself with the means for transmissions and such things in your heraldy? the lion is something like also a dragon quite often used in british heraldy if i am not too mistaken... HOW i will get me a lion in such a small scale... now i can´t seem to make do with something easy^^
and as for the how many kits... well i used up around 4-6 second edition arms of SM... a single bolt pistol, a catachan head inside a cadian empty helmet shaved to the basic shape, and then a standard IG body and standard IG legs... but as you´ve fully rightly stated with empire militia boots... also there is a tank hatch of unknown to me origin... probably chimera? as a shiled... then numerous pouches of IG and even one pouch of SM origin and a boltpistolholster that i made empty looking...
for the paintjob i have considered it to be mostly leathery brown and then with the odd red and black and white spots...
could be... i cut off some of the mechanisms there and i think i lost most of the original rivets due to some too much glue on the surface... might remake these tho... somehow a riveted shiled oozes badassery
at graven... well i guess the paintjob will have to clear that up for you... what i wanted to show is a somehow leathery armor for this captain... and also the striped shoulders of the old second edition arms inspired almost the whole mini...
I thought I got most of those parts forgot the hatch though I think you are being a bit harsh on the cogs idea, plus I did not mean working just as an emblem design.
I see the shield White with black cog design and then black rivets around the edge sod you I will make my own HAHHA HA HA HA HA
Never mind lill oll me... just checking out the competition.
Nice one Vik... almost has me worried I'd go for the imperial eagle on the shield, in white, with red trim on a blue shield, somewhat like the Union Jack in colour.
For a lion i'd look into some bretonnian heraldry decals.
Vik, you gotta put a bulldog on the shield... Very British
Like the Captain idea, I was looking at doing something similar when the film came out, although was going to base him firmly in the WW2 era and use historical minis... Another project on the design board...

the imperial eagle... well if push comes to shove... it might come to that... tho the linky of dave... a lion is my topmost favorite choice for this one...tho the canvas is mightily limited one might say so^^
and unfortunatly i don´t own any bretonian decals... hmmm.... doing research.........

wasn´t inteded to sound harsh... but most peeps tend to stick cogs here and there and declare a fridge or a phone steampunk... that i wanted to be not accused of
and yeah... make your own... the league of captains...lol
League of captains Love it count it as done ……. wait a minute its me count it as started and left to die a lonely death on my desk of thing s to finish
To be fair the house has become a major project, still have to finish the kitchen/dining room floor then the downstairs toilet and en suit kind of taking over our lives.
Plus I am having to finish of the hall way and stairs, but once these get done I should be able to get into the man cave and get to work with no excuses
at LDD... yeah right... does it sound too dickish that we redecorated the whole childrens room in one weekend? new carpet and every single piece of furniture is now standing at a totally different place? it can be done....
at mordain...yeah... that would be possible too... although this would then remind us all a bit too strongly of cap of A, eh?
That RAF circle's just always made me think "I'm a target, please shoot here!" I think the Lion Rampant is more fitting with your Victorian theme anyway.
Nice work on that captain, Vik! And yes, any model that carries a riveted shield has badass written all over it... oh and why not put a gear or two on it, for decoration?
lol...mr merlin... read my answer to LDD´s earlier suggestion regarding cogs onna shield?
and mars... yeppers... i am totally with you on this... i will try to get a freehand done for this... IF this fails... i have found some ebay bitz of bretonian shields with raised details... or even a decal... that is my fall back position plan then^^... but corss fingers for me and may the lords guide my brush
well... so much for today... got nothing done at all... work is again in full swing and i am exhausten when finally coming back home...
yeah well... you know that table we have talked about worth making...? well sometimes the wood is dead against any form of shaping up...... those lil buggers
Vik you are either lying or you are to dam fast at decorating LOL and don't talk to me about sanding I have no skin left on my fingers from trying to sand the staircase.
I really cant wait to get all this done so I can build and paint my models

Sorry Vik your thread has turned into good housekeeping
LOL! Love the Captain Vik! Now If I had the parts, a Captain Khadrovia would have a definite cog theme to the shield as well as a BIG RED STAR in the middle. I have to find those from my Tau stuff. Soviet Airforce stars that is.
I just wanted to say I also like your Cap'n Vik! I think the lion will look great, but making an homage to Cap'n "A" would be cool too.
I'm sure you will do it justice! (pun not intended )
I know I have been absent from the threads for far too long, but I recently got side-tracked by building up my Chaos Army. I finally visited my FLGS, and I want to get in some games before too long, so I want my army to be completely assembled, if not painted.

and no cogs...seriously ...

There are precedents set already, they had the "Crimson Dynamo" and "Titanium Man" as Russian counterparts to Iron Man, I am sure that I could find the right materials to make such a character as a heroic captain with a shield and pistol.

Spoiler:
None of the Red Guardians have been revealed to possess superhuman powers or abilities, with the exception of Tania Belinsky after her mutation by the Presence, the Ultimate version, the seventh Red Guardian, and Krylenko. All are highly skilled athletes. Shostakov was an expert pilot. All of the Guardians but Alexei and Tania have used a steel shield similar to that used by Captain America; Alexei and Tania used a "belt-buckle" disc, a hurling weapon which magnetically returned to the wearer's hand when thrown, and was a part of their costume's belt buckle. The powers and abilities of the seventh Red Guardian have not yet been fully revealed, though he is an expert engineer, former Crimson Dynamo pilot, and has some degree of enhanced cybernetic strength. Krylenko's powers remain the same as with his identity as Vanguard.
Wrestlers wear singlets, not full body tights lol no one but ballerinas wear full body tights.
If some vigilante donned full body tights, they would have a SWAT team take him down within an hour.
Mine does not, and no neckbeards either. Everyone that works at my FLGS is very cool. And get this- the store owner (Jeff Durochia) is the only person that was ever recognized /awarded by GW with the creation of a new official Chapter (Yellow Jackets).
Vik... Why tomorrow? If the tights fit, you should wear them NOW
By the way, you have any idea on how I can possibly create eyes on such small a blindfold as my hero has? I'm at a loss on how to do it. yeah, I know several like that- me, I wear running trainers, cargo trousers and a T-shirt. Cheap, practical and comfy.
Xcuse me... but with a mohawk in different colours, ska and punk in my music player, and paperclips in my ears... I must have skinny jeans too... preferably in tartan
But I doubt if Vik will wear tights... perhaps just for the missus...
I have worn long johns on the door, (under my tyrousers of course) but i know of other Doorman that have worn thier Mrs' tights under thier trousers to keep warm. lol
I've always wondered about that kind of thing, Mau S. Are there people who love mutli-colored mohawks, but like to listen to Mozart? Or people who wear skinny jeans, in tartan even, but don't listen to punk and ska?
Seriously... did music follow the clothing, or did the clothing follow the music?
Well I have worn skinny jeans baggy jeans cargo pants, but no tights ……. yet
My sisters other half was a builder and used to wear her tights in winter to keep warm apparently, not sure why he wore her nickers and suspender belt as well though

I'm guessing i'm a perfect example of clothing following the music, and then music diverting and rejoining the clothing. I started out with heavy metal and hardrock, did the whole skinhead/ska thing, turned to death metal and became a pale-face... only to return to punk and ska. All the while my clothing turned out mixes of above styles, but nowadays in my line of work i need to look a bit representative... so no more pale faces or heavy make-up... But nobody touches my Hawk
Edit: I counted, and turn out to have at least 9 classical cd's... mostly wagner, bach and beathoven... But no Bieber... never Bieber...
The tight jeans I wore in High School (mid 90's) are NOT the same as these nut-repressing "skinny jeans" of today. Sorry girls, but YES, they DO make your butt look big

Seriously... did music follow the clothing, or did the clothing follow the music?
I'm guessing i'm a perfect example of clothing following the music, and then music diverting and rejoining the clothing. I started out with heavy metal and hardrock, did the whole skinhead/ska thing, turned to death metal and became a pale-face... only to return to punk and ska. Well I like 70's and 80's rock and metal, but one look at me and you'll see I'll never be able to pull either of those off Plus, I never was one for looks...
I would probably have more classical CDs, but I generally don't have many CDs at all- maybe a dozen I actually listen to. Most of my stuff is either on youtube playlists or on one of those CDs- I'm content to repeat songs several times a day. Only classical CD I actually own is the lord of the rings soundtrack and the space marine soundtrack from the limited edition (both mostly for when I'm painting)
morning kids... papa is home...and what does he see??? a bunch of fellas talking about leggins and other legwear...
and i wont show you mine regardless if you talk/show yours...... never!!!

those we called carrote shape... and i hated them back in the days too... nowadays some fellas wear them again... i shudder at the thought...

LOL... by the way... bieber is the german word for beaver...*coughs*
dsteingass wrote:Hopefully, Vik won't show us a pic of him wearing tights
you will remain safe from such a ghastly event... rather will all hell freeze that i will show you all my drawers or tights ...
but in other matters i will now show you something way more nice...
a hero and something to soar the skies with...
first there is a hero... at least one half of him...(i will not glue his boltpistol wielding arm for now... this will get glued on after paint has happened... otherwise the paintjob will be more a pain(t) job... too much covered areas then... so i will paint this one later on unassembled...or rather part assembled...
here are the pics...
added cogteeth to the rim of the shiled... do you think these are undue? i am not too sure about them...also i added a new piece of heraldry to the shiled... it is a cross between wings and a "v"... what do you think?
and then a big new presentation...
my first flyer...a nod towards leonardo da vinci... for sure...and somehow a bit more archaic looking flyers of steampunky origins...
still lots to do on this one but i couldn´t keep this project any more secret... you like?
if you like it...there might be more of these in the future... with variations in pose and construction...as no steampunk vehicle is alike any other...
only C&C for the shield is the teeth of the cog should be a little more spaced out, something like the same size gap between the teeth as the size of the teeth.
Love the flyer, and yeah, very archaic hang glider there, like the spines of it ^^
thanks mate... the flyer is a true work of love for me... always wanted to do an hommage towards da vinci´s stuff... there will be more work done on that tho... exhaust pipes need some more work and then i have to think about adding some kind of weaponry... maybe i should have a small basket full of mortar shells? like in WWI where the droped these out of planes?
and i was unsure of the cogs teeth... but then they would be far less than now... you think it wouldn´t look like this:
shrike wrote:Hmm, if you did them like I said, it'd take complete repositioning- depends if you think it's worth all the extra bother really
actually i would skip the extra bother this time if it is all the same to you...tho...if it still looks crappy to you when primed i am sure i can work something around this...
First, like the shield and the emblem is tops all though I do see a little issue with the edging/cogs, however I will hold of till the painting is done.
The flyer is dam fantastic love it totally steam punk as well, to be honest I was looking at the GW bird men the other day and thinking along these lines, however yours is way better mate and looks friggin awesome.
The only down side is the crappy GW guard mini, it so deserves a character based miniature wearing a flight hat goggles and a crazy bid ass moustache
Vik, you might try a torso from those VOID sprues I sent you? Meade is right about the head direction, otherwise he couldn't hit anything
Like ALL Cobra troopers.
the old WHFB birdmen where indeed a great inspiration for me... same with ewok construction and of course batman...
at dave... i am still waiting for a good idea as to what tzo do with the void fighters... so many models from one range...that deserves a good idea for the lot of them in one go... and frankly...they´re a bit too modern looking for the steampunk army...so i think they will get soon used for something that my sons army of arbites might find a use for...
batman... well that could be good looking for sure...but a flyer like that should look steampunky in my book...
and LDD...of course you are right... a good looking mini...with a honorable enough ´stache would be the ideal choice... lets agree that the next model of a flyer will be converted to that standard then... prototype anyone
as for the cogs... i think with the current look i wont get away with as is... so there will be a revision on that part...stay confident
Again (in case you still haven't), you need to watch Steamboy. You seem to gravitate to parallel ideas to those shown in that movie. Your flyer, for example, looks quite a bit like this:
Your vehicle concepts also seem similar - maybe you have seen it. It's a very well designed look. The film has a ton of stuff to inspire.
I'd love to see your army shot. You must have a crazy (awesome) battalion by now.
Vik, taking a step or ten back, have you checked out this thread - scratchbuilt tank heaven methinks...
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/433048.page#5180551 I urge you (and your blog followers) to give it a visit, it's not mine btw, but I was super impressed as I'm sure you'll be...
Hi folks, I am a great fan of your guild's members's work and have been lurking quite a while now. Viks flyer now has made me crawl out of the shadows for the first time. I love it!!! The creativity you show with your steampunk army is incredible... there are so many highlights, like, man, those steam robot guard figures, you made an actual gaslamp!!! But this is the crumbs on the crust, the top of the topping, a batwing glider... Outstanding! ... momento, let me look up some more words of praise in my dictionary...
The reason I came out of my shady little cove is to recommend you to the flyers of Otto Lilienthal. He had another approach to the pilot's position that should be relatively easy to convert.
still no work done the past coupla days... whenever i am at work...afterwards my head is a bit empty ... but comes thursday i have way more energy left... so this will be oportunity time again^^
at mars... still not watched steamboy... can you believe it? seriously...that movie is way too long on my to see list! so i assure you... total coincidence for all lookalike stuff i did...^^
and valhalla is right... my main motivation is to make a nod /hommage towards the wonderful stuff da vinci did... you can´t possibly know how much i adore his stuff... if there ever was a true artisan...it wold have been him... we all look pale in comparrision with him...
also...
hello Hruotland !
i am honored to see you pulled out of the shadows of lirking land because of my works! *bows* thank you sir for that BIG compliment! and indeed my work looks also a bit inspired by Lilienthals work...tho his work was of course based on da vinci again
and well... the current wing"man" flyer... it is a sort of cross between a roughrider approach by air and a small flyer... i have secret plans to where i want to build something that could be based upon lilianthals works as well... something more heli like... for the pilot then i wanted to use a sentinel pilots body... which should be a good base for such a posing...
at mordain... argh.... you and your crazy ideas.... you do realize that you chuck out them on very fertile soil, huh? the nerve... pointing such ideas towards me... how cruel... now i have to see how i can see this through....there is no way around i think....may you rot in a special modelers hell^^
at ruglud.... thanks for that link... i kow Develain´s clone wars army... and his vostroyans... awesome... i didn´t knew he was that good at scratchbuilding yet... certainly something to learn lots of stuff from him for sure...already subbed^^
Nah. One day, I'll be building my own 40k version of Stalingrad for the IG to play in. Then I'll be joining the League of Extraordinary Riveters myself.
That all depends on me actually painting some armies first though.
That all depends on me actually painting some armies first though.
at valhalla...actually ... only some of us... very few at that have complete armies ^^... it is a special feature on us riveters to to be gifted with hobby ADHD... recruitment is done after a nice and extraordinary amount of riveting for your army... wether it be on minis, tanks or terrain... that´s totally up to you
I really like the direction your taking that flyer, should be cool to see the results. I also agree with some of the other guys that the cogs should be spaced out a little more. just enough so it looks like he would be able to link his shield up with another guy or something. Spartan like?
hey airborneGinger! you are of course right...as are all the other critics of the cogteeth... that´s why i made a complete new shield... couldn´t fix the old one after i got rid of the teeth... so i had to redo from start... and i am way more satisfied now myself... now it is only six teeth... the original rivets of that ex-tank hatch are again there... and now i only need a new go at a heraldic icon for the middle... which is atm my tricky part...
maybe i get around to make a pic to show you all the new version...
