All this approval is very encouraging.

That might be because those are the main sources of inspiration for it.

The two halves are now glued together and sanding has happened.
There is a slight gap at the join that will be filled when I get around to all the other gaps.
and while there is the tank to show scale, with all the other modifications it may be difficult to tell accurately. As SM #2 was helping me with the scale of my sinks, here he is showing the scale of the blade.

I will now repeat this process for the second blade and bring it up to the same level. Then I can do all the gap filling together and build the support structures together so that they are interchangeable.

Nice work Dr. H, but please tell me when you paint it that there WON'T be hazard stripes. Maybe instead since he wants to create destruction/anarchy/entropy he will have all sorts of writing or signs on it like STOP, HALT, free puppy (with the little pull off tags that you see on grocery store bulletin boards), or peep holes saying ladies shower room view in an attempt to get people in front not to run as it plows them over.

Also a general question. Why don't the blades funnel the people underneath the tracks or into a wood chipper or something. I do see that as more of a Khorne thing, but if we're trying to be brutal then I vote woodchipper

For painting, nose cone art of course. Not necessarily shark's jaws, but something. Or maybe a nice pin-up to match the one inside. Or should that go on the hull...

Just not flames, please.

I think if not hazard stripes on the dozer blade then at least some eyes...like on the triremes of ancient Greece ...would underline the beastly character of the tank...

and the blade by the way looks very good, even with the lil gap, a stunning piece!

I wasn't planning any hazard stripes on the front of the dozer. There may or may not be some on the support structure.

In general (and in the rules I gather) the purpose of a dozer blade is to move things out of the way in a terrain sense. But if you're in a war situation and you have a dozer blade anyway, you may as well make it dangerous to your enemies.

While we're on the subject of funnelling in and chopping up, I did find some trains equipped with mechanical snow ploughs and have saved them for future reference.
Spoiler:

The tank art that I was planning, was destined for the hull of the tank. This was going to be a picture of Tank Girl. However, I've changed my mind due to the death of H. R. Giger and I'm now going to do a tribute (of sorts) to him instead. This will still be on the hull of the tank (currently just in front of the guns).

The dozer blade, however...
Viktor von Domm wrote:I think if not hazard stripes on the dozer blade then at least some eyes...like on the triremes of ancient Greece ...would underline the beastly character of the tank...

...The plan was to have it plain and very shiny, using the buff-able Metalcote paint that I have (I've been trying to get hold of a lighter shade recently to no avail, yet).

However, depending on how it looks with the added details. I may paint something on it.

Not eyes though. As the headlights of the tank are there to represent the eyes (as they also function as the eyes of the driver). The dozer therefore, represents the "mouth" of the tank. So, if the added spikes/blades/details don't make it look mouth-like enough, I may well paint some teeth on.

Again. Will have to see how it turns out in the end to see what may happen.

and the blade by the way looks very good, even with the lil gap, a stunning piece!
Ta. The gap has been filled with a piece of scrap plastic, so is (hopefully) seamless now.

Second blade is about to have the ribs glued on to give it shape.

Dozer 2 is now glued together.
It's ended up at a slightly different angle than the first, but nothing that will be a problem.
You will see that where the first blade covers the whole front of the tank, this second blade doesn't quite cover the corners.

Once the edges are all cleaned up, I'll start on the support structure.

I'd have to make a far neater version if I was to sell it. There's quite a bit of work you don't see here to get the two halves to meet up neatly (and quite a few hidden rough edges). I would probably make one up to this stage and then cut it in half once it looks neat. I might consider it in the future if people want it.

Thanks Graven. There will be rivets. Once the frame is built I'll know where to put them (or the main ones at least) and the hull of the tank needs some rivets replaced (and added), so there will be a major riveting session at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Thanks LDD.
These are just the base dozer blade. The extra details will be added on top to match the two concepts (Carmageddon and Monkeyphony).

So the wider of the two will have the forward pointing blades/spikes and will have the two small trailing dozer blades to become the Carmageddon blade.

The pointier blade will get the saw-tooth lower edge that merges into a similar surface detail of the DE piece supplied by MT and may or may not get the trailing dozer blades (or something to match). How this will be done, I'm not sure at the moment...

I hope so.

Good good.

I have been busy with non-visually-exciting things (gap filling) and I've been doing more sink work (that will be shown in the other thread).

the current job is to build the support structure of the dozer blade.
So far I've added the main struts for the blades themselves. These are just cross beams and were quite a bit of work to get them to fit well and they also show just how imperfect the dozer structures are. Hopefully this won't show on the finished model.

However, the next job is to make the attachment points on the blades where the pistons and support structure are joined. In order to know where these should be on the dozer blades, I need to know where they come from on the tank. So, I've started making the brackets for the tank end...

I started by thinking about what attachment points I needed. Looking at the reference picture I showed a while ago, I can see 6 brackets on the tank: Two are for the main brace/structure, this is positioned straight (and mostly parallel) from the tank hull to the dozer blade and acts to transfer the force of the tank through the blade.
The other four points are for two pairs of pistons that move the dozer blade up and down. These are what I've started on.
I had a look through my box of "tubes" and found a few that fit together without being too tight a fit (or too loose). The thin tube for the larger pistons actually works as the larger part of the smaller pistons.

You can see how I plan to position them on the tank below. The main structure will fit at the bottom of the front of the tank, between the smaller pistons.

They do look too long at the moment. The final position of the dozer, relative to the tank, is not set yet. So I made them longer then necessary and will cut them down when I'm ready.

I was also going to attach the larger pistons higher up on the sides of the tank, but they would have blocked the view of the tank's eyes, so they were moved down a bit.

Now I can build the main structure...

Well I ended up with two designs and wasn't sure which would work best. So I thought I may as well make both.

I'm aiming to make them swappable, at least as far as being able to see which is the best fit for the look of the tank.
Then the other one may find it's way on to a future tank that may suit it better.

No, one at a time. He's a Mad scientist, not crazy...

You've all seen a lot of the front side of the dozer blades and I've talked a lot about the rear side. Now it's time to rectify the balance...

This the progress on the main support structure (You'll never guess what it's made of... ) and rough positioning against the tank and blade.

I still need to come up with a brilliant idea of how to attach (in a non-permanent way) the support to the blade. I have a few possibilities to try...

As I said, I had a few ideas of what to try for the attachment to the blade. I was going to try out a few today...

...but then I had an idea, just as I was getting ready for bed, that was a combination of a couple of the ideas and scribbled out a quick drawing to remind myself in the morning.

It still looked good in the morning and I've gone ahead and made it.

The slots in the semi-circles are for a hidden piece of plastic inside the other half of the hinge and should hold the blade on firmly and prevent it from "drooping".

While it may look a little far from the tank;
I can make it a little shorter or
It should make plenty of room for the secondary blades that I haven't even started work on yet...

Now need to look at where the pistons will attach.

Could you take a look at the bolts on cams landing pad and use something along those lines to attach the brace. When not in use just put the bolt back into the tank part and I could look like a cabling/tying off part on the front of the tank.

Thanks Theo. I will come to bolts and rivets once the structure is sound.

Talking of the structure...
This is the pistons and a view of how the small pistons attach to the dozer blade.

Notice how not-very-straight some bits are down there...

and with the pistons and their hinges done, I can start attaching it to the tank.

The main support structure is still not glued in place yet as other bits need to set first.
Then, I will add the rivets etc...

Also need to add the details to the blade faces and make the mini secondary dozer blades...

It's no wonder most dozer blades you see are straight and attached by a pair of robot arms... that would be so much simpler...

Yeah, the first time I held it up to the tank once I'd done the main hinge I though it was way too far out (after previously cutting down the main support and thinking it was then too short. The hinge lengthened it beyond where it was originally), But then I remembered that I still had to do the secondary blades and relaxed... a bit.

Also notice that the tank no longer looks short and wide...

Well, it's not quite working.
The main support structure is glued rigid as the pistons don't have the friction required to hold the dozer up. So I made the decision early on to not have it adjustable.
The hinges for all the pistons do work, but not the main structure. This helps with lining the piston halves up to swap the blades over. See below.

It is designed to look functioning, so I'm glad that comes across.

inmygravenimage wrote:From that angle, it now looks like it's screaming, somewhere between rage and pain... which is a good thing
That is a good thing. Thanks Graven.

The main structure is now glued on to the tank and it supports the weight of the dozer easily.

I had it in a raised position as I thought this would be better for when (if I ever get around to it) I play the game and needs to sit in/on some terrain. Don't want it looking like it's resting on the dozer.

This shows how the dozer can be detached from the tank.

I still need to do all the piston work on the second blade and I have to find a suitably thin piece of tube/rod for the small pistons as I used more than I expected on the first blade and can't seem to find any more. Need to have a rummage, or I'll just make some putty ones.

I have also started looking at the secondary blades.

Not sure yet, how I'm going to attach them. Got to give them a curve first...

I may go back to looking at my sinks while I ponder...

In other news; my chair bust today, so going to buy a new one tomorrow...

Roll your own. Tubes, I mean Longstanding practice in papercraft is to roll cylinders for things like ship masts and whatnot. It takes some practice to get it right though, but paper is cheap. I use one of those glue sticks and whatever weight of paper I think I need. for this, 20#. Another option anyway.

Edit: And post #500. Wow, that came along quickly.

It's almost as if you think I have some kind of obsession with using sprue for almost everything...

Oh yeah, didn't think of paper. Good idea.

However, I have found some rods of milliput I rolled out ages ago to use up the excess. Somehow I managed to roll them the perfect thickness for this job before I had even thought about this job... and I found them when I was looking for something else for use on the sinks... Now that's taking forward planning to whole new levels...

I bought a digital calliper for £20 from antics ( a chain of model shops in the uk, they have a website too) a while ago and have no idea how I lived without it, gone are the days of my disorganised pile of miscellaneous drill bits and the squint-and-hope for the best method of measurement.

Nice one red, You'll be in 4 figures before you know it .

My calipers are long buried under a stack of sprues somewhere....never needed them when I had orky-know-wotz to deal with it, maybe the dark mechanicus will unearth the tek - or maybe Slaanesh wants to gift them with the exquisite despair of parts not quite being perfect.

Wow Red, I forget you're a relative newcomer here - obviously the quality of your work counts for far more than your length of service

I'm still at the squint-and-hope stage. Which it followed by the sand-it-until-it-fits stage
Hopefully my Dad has one I don't know about, if not, I will definitely look into getting one.

Update time!
This second dozer blade has been quite a bit of work to get it to fit, due to it being a slightly different angle from the first...

First off, the ribs that hold the dozer in shape were in the way and I had to shave them down to give the pistons a clear view of the dozer and allow me to add some flat plates to attach the hinges to.
This picture shows what I mean and the final arrangement.

So, with that, both blades are done to the base level ready for the additional details (and riveting). See if you can spot the difference...

I have just decided that the small, secondary blades don't need to move and will be fixed in place. They are only there to protect the sponsons and those have quite a bit of ground clearance. Therefore the blades, don't need to reach all the way to the ground and so don't need to move in order to follow the terrain. This will make life much easier.
Giving them a curve won't be easy though...

monkeytroll wrote:Good job with the pistons, looks great

Thanks MT. No, just curved in the "normal" way you would expect.
Just being that they are shorter in that dimension, means it's going to be trickier than for the larger blades. Just need to find the right former to bend them over.

Looking great BTW. And I would agree I am not sure you need the secondary blades. Of course you go for it, and it will look perfect I am positive.

Ta. We will see what it looks like before it become permanent.

monkeytroll wrote:I don't think "need" is a thing where the scientist is coming from
Not necessarily "need" as such. But I do have reasons for adding them. But if the final look is a bit much, one way or another, then I can do without.
I do also have a backup plan if the mini-dozers don't look right; some railings that will direct things away from the guns. Won't know what is best until we try though.

Camkierhi wrote:You need to go nuts like me dude and go apply some heat to the situation, 5 minutes and I could give you a perfectly curvy set of blades.
Ja, I will try the trusty hairdryer first before setting anything on fire. This black plasticard is quite soft as it is really, so doesn't need much encouragement.

Looking great BTW. And I would agree I am not sure you need the secondary blades. Of course you go for it, and it will look perfect I am positive.
Thanks. Well the final result will be (close to) perfect, whether that involves the mini-dozers is yet to be seen.

OH and I have a micrometer kicking around only trouble is it's in Imperial. Yours if you want it.
Ta. There is apparently something similar in the garage somewhere. If I can't find it, I may give you a shout.

No actual progress to report today. Why?
I've been busy organising lots of bits. Why have I been organising lots of bits?
Because my friend, that sells my painted models in his ebay shop, has given me (that's given as in free ) a metric -ton of bits that he can't be arsed to sell for tiny profits.

There is... *takes deep breath*...
a load of Ork, Orc and goblin bits; a few guns, some bows, a bunch of spears, many arms, quite a few heads (mostly goblins) and a selection of shields with decorative pieces.
3 random metal torsos with clubs
some metal shields and some metal weapons (the tab says Warlord Games)
A load of goblin legs that from the poses look like they sit on the load of wolf-like things (8 in total and 2 extra armoured-heads)

AND;
A bunch of other random Fantasy bits; some metal arms with spears (one appears to have got the short straw ) and another with a shouty-face club thing (I'm sure you all know what it is), an armoured arm, the top of a halberd, random metal head with horns , a chaos bit of decoration, and a random spike.
A skeleton torso and arm.
Some other shields that aren't Orc ones.
and two thirds of a tank trap.

And, a load of Space Marine bits (mostly old), including arms, backpacks, bolters, bolt pistols, knives, and shoulder pads.
A few random chaos looking bits (3 shoulder pads, 2 bolt pistols, a bolter, 2 arms and a backpack).
A flamer.
and a few other little bits.
A bunch of Tyranid bits; mostly leftover bits and upgrade parts. Most I have seen before, except the really large guns and the large carapace parts.

And, 3 pairs of what look like Eldar arms
and a few Tau bits together with a firewarrior (that's been painted in a delightful diarrhoea brown with lime green armour)

AND;
A bike frame (looks like it's supposed to have treads at the back)
A hatch
and a sprue of little links for a chain or a really small tread.
and some tree like pieces.

And finally, a load of transfers; lots of SM ones, a couple of Cadian ones, SM scouts, Space wolves Land...(assuming ...speeder), Space wolves Bikes, Ork Scorcher and Ork War truck and a Gorkamorka 1 and 2.

And a flag that may or may not look nice on my tank when it's done.

Not a bad bonus for a job well done.

The shouty-face club thing is a musician's horn

The bike is an old ork bike, minus the track, the tree things are indeed trees - old GW jungle trees.

The non-orc shields are Empire.

No idea what the tiny track links are from - Robotech maybe? - but they look like they'll be useful.

Looking forward to seeing what the scientist comes up with for all the loot.

The trees are from the 3rd edition box 40k. I have a bunch of those trees. They are a bit fragile. 3rd ed blew chunks, BTW.

That's an old Rhino hatch. There was a bolter that glued into the little hole in the center.

An interesting haul. Everything looks to be close to 15 years old or thereabouts. 'Bout the same age as the bits I still have lying around.

Ta. I thought I recognised the hatch from one of Gits' tanks.

Yeah, many of the sprues had '90s dates on them and some '00s. I think my mate just picked them out of a random bin of random sprues in a local shop to him. Shame there's nothing local to me but fields... But that's what friends are for.

And, progress on the dozers...

As the mini-dozers are only for pushing things aside and not for dozer-ing I've only given them a slight curve.
These are now (more-or-less) ready for the support beams/rods/whatever I decide to use to attach them with...

Still a little tidying up I can see in these pictures and they may even get some modifications (e.g. get shorter) at some point before the end.

Also, I've added the hydraulic hoses for the pistons.

They weren't quite the easy job I expected and they're not perfect and will either look fine in the end or will be modified.

Thanks.

Excellent work, mini-blades look great. Feed pipes are cool, but........

I have a tiny issue! Your hydrolics on the larger piston the pipe goes into the hull directly into the track housing? Maybe it should cut across into the body. Maybe I am wrong and please tell me to shut up. In my head there are tracks wanging about just under that plate where the pipe currently enters.

Well it can't be any harder than the inside was. At least I was sensible enough to leave things like the dozer blade and turret separate to aid painting.

All thoughts are welcome. Yes, the tracks are just under there, but the armour must be quite thick in that region. The pipework could run through (or just under) the armour. I didn't want a long trailing hose on the outside as that's an obvious weak point, and why I kept the hoses inside the protection of the hinges.

The mini-dozers, however, I'm not so sure on now...

Blu-tacked on to test the look:

While in theory, they are kind of needed. I'm not feeling the look with them on.
Maybe they are a bit plain (I don't have the space to jazz them up much), but together with the main dozer, they seem to make the front view of the tank a bit boring... The main blade will add detail to the model, with all the spikes and things, but these just hide detail without adding anything.

I may try and see what a rail will look like and if not, leave them all off.

I agree. They are a intresting feature but don't do it for me. If anything you'll need to add a bigger engine in order to move the amount of debris that bade is designed for. I'd go for double!

I am not 100% on them. I kinda get it, but , I don't know, just doesn't feel right.

The idea was to move debris out the way of the sponsons, but I don't know?!!

Maybe instead extend the sponson front to the ground, with a lip to "scoop" stuff away. Or put a smaller inverted "blade" on the bottom of the sponson?

Ah what do I know, it looks brilliant.

And besides you wanted somewhere to put some art, those second blades would be great for that?

And that's the thing, this is meant to be a fast and aggressive tank. Those extra dozers make it look like an earth-mover.

Yeah, it's just that I didn't want it to punch a hole in a wall and leave the guns behind...
I think at this stage I need to think about what's cool rather than what's functional.
I want it to look fast and aggressive, not slow and lumbering.

And besides you wanted somewhere to put some art, those second blades would be great for that?
Thing is, they are covering an area that I was thinking of putting the art on...

monkeytroll wrote:If the main blade is getting the carmageddon spikes, maybe the smaller blades could get two similar spikes? Whatever, I'd finish the main blade to where you want it before deciding what to do with the little fellas
I did think that, but then they wouldn't match the other dozer... gotta be coordinated in this day and age...

I didn't like the look of the rail either. Too cluttered and not substantial enough to look like it'd do the job. I could have made it with thicker rails, but that wouldn't solve the look issues.

I'll leave it for now and do other things...

Speaking of the spikes for the Carmageddon blade, how's this for size?

I thought it looked small as I cut it, but looking at the pictures it certainly doesn't need to be any bigger.
But should it be smaller? Thicker?
Remember there will be 2 more of these on each side.

Hmmm, spike looks a bit too long, since it gives the illusion that the plow is almost as long as the tank itself 9 or its the camera angle in which case ignore the critique . Reduce its length by 40% or so? And thicker works.

About the side plows... maybe increase the overlap with the main blade and curve them a bit more?

Thanks Red. If the tank hull is 12cm, The plough, with this spike is 9cm from the front of the tank's hull to the tip. That is probably getting on a bit long.

How's this for the alternative?
This is about half the length of the previous and reaches further up the dozer. So it's more of a blade than a spike.

Thanks. I'll look at them again at a later date. They are put to one side but not forgotten.

With that, I set about cutting the spikes ready to fit them on.
I started in the middle and had to do a little shaving and sanding to get it to fit on, but got it on. Then when I came to add the next one, I found that the slight rise in the tip of the dozer blade (which happened when the two halves met and pushed up a little) was exaggerated by the spike and it just wasn't at the same angle as the others were and by quite a bit... not good.

So, I had that one off and added scraps of plastic to fill the gap that appears when you have the bottom of the spike flat with the ground. You can see in the picture just how much extra was needed.

The gaps will be filled with putty when I do all the little gaps for all the blades.

I haven't done the other side yet as I am leaving plenty of time between the additions so that the glue sets and I don't end up bending one while adding another.

I'll be back when they are all on and filled.

I like that idea. Makes sense with the rest of the dozer being all curves. I'll look at doing that in a bit.

and welcome to my little corner of sanity, GamesEtc.

They are not curved yet, but here's the dozer in it's (almost) full glory.

I think that gives the tank a nice smile there. The sort of smile a psychopath gives you...

And, my friend has sent me some more models to paint before he sells them and this amused me...

And now with a slight curve to the blades.

Thanks Red.
I did, in a way, account for the extra height. I mounted the dozer so that it is raised from the ground. Partially to avoid terrain issues in the future and to avoid getting it slightly wrong and being too close to the ground, or not straight enough to be shown up by flat ground. So it's already quite high and the extra height shouldn't, therefore, make much difference.

I do have some LotR miniatures. Only the 4 main Hobbits. These are for selling though, so the next time you'll see them will be in my commission thread.

Good luck with that.

Hopefully you will all be riveted by today's update.

While riveting the dozers, I thought I'd add (or replace) a few on the rest of the tank too.

Some of them aren't easy to see, being white on white, but they will be more obvious when it comes to painting.
There may even be a few more rivets needing to be added to the hull, but they'll be done when I do the final check over at the end of the build.

I'm a bit dozered out at the moment, so I'll do a few other things before returning to detail the second blade. It'll get done eventually.

Really need to get around to ticking something off the ever-growing list...

monkeytroll wrote:Always good to see some rivet action

Thanks.
It's been quite a major job to get this dozer to this stage and the other dozer looks like it's going to be more work.
I also think I need to pick up some thinner plasticard to do what I plan for it, so next time I am in the mood to spend some money I'll order some in. So that will also delay it a bit.

Red Harvest wrote:Don't exhaust yourself on it then, the dozer part. Everything is coming along nicely. And good to hear you anticipated the tracks.
Thanks Red.
Not exhausted, just need a change of job. Although I do have the bathroom items on the go, I feel like doing something else on the tank (and need to pick up the aforementioned plasticard). I may even cut the tracks off the sprue and have a look at them next... and there's this rear door to look at... and a couple of other details as well... (what was that about ever-growing to-do lists...).

Page 95... and in the last 5 pages I've done... a dozer blade... The rest of the tank in 5 pages??? Probably not...
I have got a long piece of fluff on the boil as a treat for page 100... as a backup... yeah, backup. I wonder if I can get this tank finished before page 200...

The tracks have been added to the tank, in more ways than one, but without any changes. These will be one of the few original parts left on the tank.

The braces are some odd bits I acquired in some left over sewing parts. This was the first thing I thought of when I saw them.

They really were a perfect fit. The width was perfect to reach across the tracks and the thickness of the bands fit perfectly between the treads. They were only slightly imperfect in the depth, but pieces of plasticard have been added so that they do reach to the door.

I have also added rivets into the holes in the metal and that completes them nicely.

Remember the flattened hobbit glued to the tracks too

Well, I've actually sat here looking at it and there is surprisingly little I can think needs adding now.
The second dozer needs work, but isn't really holding things up.

I'm going to leave the mini-dozers off. I just can't see a nice way to add them.

I did look for something to add as ears (just for you, Graven), but could not find anything that wouldn't look silly. I will find a way to represent them in painting.

And everything else on my list of what I thought could be added, will not fit on the tank. So will be saved for future vehicles.

Camkierhi wrote:Got to say it is looking pretty amazing. By the time you get some paint on it, this will be out of this world.
Thanks Cam. Kind words make me happy.

So, apart from the second dozer (that I will get around to when I've bought some plastic), can anyone think of anything that I've forgotten?

In other news; I've mentioned it before, but with the passing of H. R. Giger, went an artist that I greatly admired and would have even considered commissioning him for some art one day (if I happened to acquire loads of money somewhere).
I therefore decided to change my original plan for the tank-art on this tank to a homage to his work... fine.

Little did I know that the following weeks would bring the deaths of Rik Mayall (so I considered a small homage for him), then the voice of Shaggy (Casey Kasem) and the voice of Captain Scarlet (Francis Matthews) and now Nursie (Patsy Byrne)... There's just not enough room on the tank...

Big respect to them and RIP. They all added to my upbringing (for better or worse ).

Thanks Chaps.

I think we shall call the build done (except for the second dozer which will be done soon... ish).

List of additions and changes:
Extra armour added to the turret,
Smoke launchers added to turret,
Co-axial machine gun (counts as storm bolter) added to turret,
Radar dome added to turret,
Functioning hatches added to turret and hull,
Raised roof section (to accommodate the taller than average gunner),
Removed front rhino exhausts,
Added exhaust pipes to rear,
Scratch-built sponsons with movable guns,
Targeting cameras added to sponsons,
Small "datasafe", ejectable camera added to right sponson,
Bedroll/camo' sheet/"raw material" retrieval bags added as a roll with straps,
Storage boxes / tank phone box and vents added to sponsons,
Front facing of tank hull re-built with working hatch and spotlight "eyes",
Spare treads added to rear door,
Many rivets added or replaced,
And (nearly) two scratch-built dozer blades, complete with pistons etc...

All that surrounding all that I did on the inside.

I'm left with that feeling that something is missing, but that will show itself when I come to prime it, then I'll be happy.

There will be a brief delay as I need to decide on a paint scheme, I will finish the second dozer, I have some moulding and casting becoming imminent, I may do a commission piece to get into the swing of painting and I should rest my little finger that appears to have rsi for no apparent reason.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
Any ideas that weren't used here have been saved for future use and will not be wasted.

Indeed. Just have to narrow them down, one at a time.

Red Harvest wrote:The old battleship hull camouflage from WWI? Some interesting stuff there.
True. There is quite a few of those in my "inspiration" folder.
I want something relatively simple in design for the underlying paint scheme so that the tank-art stands out.
And I don't want the camo' if it ends up with a camo'-like scheme, to be too good. This is not a tank for hiding, this is a tank that wears war-paint... yeah, that's a good way of thinking of it... Will plug that into google...

So glad you didn't get that flying landspeeder shrine of the DA then I think the only way to improve that is to run it over. Multiple times.

Yeah, not my cup of tea that. All I see there is lazy design; take existing model, add random features, fill in holes that were there, add holes that weren't, give no thought as to how any of it works... done. No, Ta.

I am also looking forward to seeing what colours it gets...

Now, I mentioned some fluff that I was writing for page 100. Well it ended up quite long, so I thought I'd start posting bits of it and build up to finish on page 100.
Spoiler:
The previous night had been dark, and it had been hot. The orange glow in the distance indicated that the fires were still burning in spite of the rain that had fallen for most of the day. There had been no attacks during the day-shift for the first time since the attacks began 10 days ago. Maybe they had run out of supplies, or even troops. After the fighting of the night before it would not be a surprise, but there was no way to count the enemy casualties as the bodies always disappeared before sunrise. Some people even reported that they had seen bodies disappearing as if they had been teleported away, but none had been confirmed... nothing had been confirmed, not even who the enemy was or why they were attacking.

Corporal Keveev checked the time. For the last 6 days the night-time attacks had started at any point within the next hour and a half. There didn't appear to be any pattern to it, but it always seemed as if the enemy waited until all the shifts had changed and everyone was at their most alert. It was one of a number of strange things about these attacks.

Lol.

And a bit more for the start of page 96
Spoiler:
Keveev checked the time again and then started walking his patrol along the outer defence wall. He had been on the jungle planet, Cisoco for nearly 4 years now and had walked this patrol for the past 2 of those. He knew the top of these walls well. So well, that he would recognise the familiar features on the walls, floor, doors and hatches, storage containers, switches and anything else that didn't move regularly. He would walk around areas in almost exactly the same way every time, his feet falling in certain spots, stepping over a crack in the concrete or onto a stain or repaired patch every time he passed, almost as if they were a pattern of his very footsteps.

However, after the recent spate of attacks there were many differences to the previously familiar surroundings. Bullet holes, explosive damage, more cracks, scrapes and many bloodstains. Keveev stepped over a small crater in the concrete of the courtyard he was passing through and checked the time again, then headed towards the rear of the complex before he would start his circuit of the outer wall. Deep beneath his feet, the next shift of a different workforce was getting underway. A workforce that Keveev didn't even suspect existed.

Norma opened her eyes. It would work, she was sure of it, the calculations were correct and could not be denied. This could change the path of the universe and give the Imperium the advantage it needed over it's enemies. She closed her notebook and sat back. It would have to wait until the current enemy could be driven off and the communication blackout that had cut off this planet from the rest of humanity had been lifted.

and I still own one of these flat goblins... only fair of one of these days a flat hobbit (almost wrote hobo ) would hit the market
I have the beginning for a little terrain piece that could involve a hobbit and a tank track. Might be a nice little job to do once the tank is finished. I could also do the "bagged marine" objective marker at the same time.

are you getting a cut of the profits Theo?

Here's a bit more. Things are warming up...
Spoiler:
A new fire had broken out in the jungle to the east. Keveev checked the time, yes, it was probably the right time. He adjusted his lasgun's strap on his shoulder and continued to walk along the walkway of the eastern wall. His eyes were constantly drawn towards the smoke as it rose like a serpent from the trees.

An alarm sounded and people stared to run to take up firing positions as they had on the previous nights. Keveev's job was to keep walking his patrol and to help out where the fighting was fiercest. He kept walking and just as he stepped over a bloodstain that had been there for 3 days, he heard it... The unmistakeable sound of "That" tank. The tank that had tested their defences night after night. This time something was different, the noise had always been loud, but this time the noise was angrier somehow, and much, much louder.

The tank looks amazing, I love all the little details you've lavished on this thing,
especially the dozer blade, which I think is my favorite part .

Thanks hk.
It's nice to hear what people like (and not like so much).

I have been looking at colour schemes. The winner so far is mainly a dark, forest green with turquoise "war paint" (in the pattern I showed earlier).
Still thinking at the moment though.

The attack begins, but what will happen... :
Spoiler:
Keveev scanned the tree-line to his left and spotted the first signs of the tank's approach; trees falling. The tank's main purpose, it seemed, was to create a path for the rest of the army, and what constituted the rest of the army was one of the oddest things about this army, if you could call it an army...

This tank, to start with, was obviously of Astartes origin. That in itself wasn't odd; the forces of chaos had access to Rhino-based vehicles and they had a tendency to modify their vehicles, as this one had been. But what followed the tank, could not be described as any "normal" chaos army. There would be xenos from every corner of the galaxy; Orks walked side-by-side with Eldar, Tau and there were reports of Tyranids being spotted... and then there were the Space Marines themselves, many of which sported the heraldry of loyal chapters. Was this all some kind of psychological ploy by the enemy to disorientate Keveev and his fellow soldiers? No one on his side of the defensive wall knew, and as far as Keveev knew, he didn't much care why. They were the enemy whatever they were wearing.

Glad you are enjoying it Shas.
While I only write this for fun and to give some kind of meaning to my collection, it makes the effort (and it is a lot of effort as a dyslexic) worthwhile to hear that others enjoy it and that it is, at least, readable.

For that, here's a larger chunk that will show part of how I see this army acting;
Spoiler:
The tank emerged from the trees in an explosion of splintered wood. It changed direction slightly to head towards the compound and then, with a plume of black smoke from the exhausts, drove headlong at the nearest perimeter wall. The defenders opened fire, but the larger guns were not positioned to fire upon the tank immediately and the small arms were ineffective against it's armour. As Keveev watched, the tank spanned the clear ground between the trees and the compound, cleared a trench without slowing, cut through the fence that surrounded the compound and then disappeared from view a fraction of a second before the wall, built to repel all attacks, was turned into flying rubble as the tank punched a hole right through it.

Now inside the compound, the tank opened fire upon the dazed and panicked troops that had expected the usual fire-fight from the top of the wall, and now had a close-quarters battle with a tank that had no qualms about charging men or buildings. The tank had never been so bold. It usually drove back and fourth across the open ground clearing the way for the rest of the army to advance. Now it was inside and it was creating havoc and drawing the attention of the vast majority of the troops.

Keveev looked out over the wall just in time to see a Wave Serpent drop a "squad" of enemy troops right by the opening and as he watched this was followed by a Tau Devilfish and a Dark Eldar transport that dropped even more troops and then peeled away to take pot-shots at the defenders still on the wall. The enemy troops filed through the opening, showing no fear as their comrades were cut down by a hail of fire (and in one case, getting too close to the tank and being run over) and created a cordon that would prevent the defenders from plugging the gap. The tank, meanwhile, headed towards the front gate of the compound.

In other news; The plasticard has shown up, so I can't use that as an excuse any more.
My finger is starting to feel better, so the break from all the cutting and shaving seems to be working.
I may give the tank a coat of primer before I get down to the moulding and casting of the bathroom items in my other thread.
I'm still considering colour scheme options. It will be worth the wait... maybe.

Yep, confusion and chaos. That's how The Scientist like to wage war.

Spoiler:
The gate had been built to withstand even greater impacts than the walls, but only from the outside. The tank passed through the gate like a power sword through tissue paper. By this time the fastest of the enemy troops had reached the gap in the wall and were reinforcing the depleted ranks of the initial attackers. Anything outside the walls were by now free to walk right up to the compound without taking fire, as the defenders tried to kill those that had already breached the wall.

As the defenders fought a tactical retreat to the relative safety of the compound's buildings a pair of large Tyranid creatures came charging through the open front gate, followed by a mass of close combat specialists from all the races; Hormagaunts bounded shoulder to shoulder with Orks carrying huge bladed weapons and Eldar Striking Scorpions with their exotic weaponry. The defenders were completely overwhelmed.

Keveev ran into a toilet block as it was the nearest building to him and staying in the open was just asking to be killed. The floor inside was slippery as he skidded to a halt just inside the doorway, he was not alone. He could smell a foul animal stench over the usual smells of this block and he readied his lasgun. Creeping forward, the sounds of the battle outside fading, he peered under the divides and doors of the stalls and could see nothing. He prepared to kick in the first door when there was a thud and the world turned black for Keveev.

It's almost as if I have bathroom related things on the mind...

And so should you. The League competition is still running and there is plenty of time yet to enter. Build a "throne" room of you own... Fabulous prizes to be won...

I don't like to have unfinished things/jobs. I have to finish what I've started before I start the next. It would drive me potty to have so much part done, but that's me.

Like the fluff, Keveev is likely to be joining the ranks of mind controlled minions soon I take it.
Well that depends on how he behaves when he wakes up...

Shall I give you a bit more...
Oh, go on then...
Spoiler:
When Keveev awoke he head ached. He reached up and felt a large lump on the back of his skull where he'd been hit. As his eyes focussed on his surroundings he could make out the interior of one of the lower office rooms of the western wing, it had been ransacked; drawers had been turned out, chairs and desks overturned and the potted plants appeared to have been eaten.

Keveev looked towards the doorway and could make out the shoulders of an Imperial fist marine and a large Ork, they appeared to be guarding the room he was in. He scanned the room for anything he might find of use and noticed the time on a chronometer, askew on the wall, 20 minutes had elapsed since the attack started. Maybe the clock was wrong for some reason, Keveev couldn't believe that the entire compound had been overrun in less time than he would spend in the shower each day. He had many questions, but was afraid to ask either of the guards and suspected that the only answer he would get would be on the end of a large fist.

As the time ticked away, Keveev had a moment to collect his thoughts and tried to rationalise the recent attacks and compare them to tonight's. Had they just been testing the defences? Even with hindsight he didn't think so. There were moments in many of the battles that Keveev could recall, where the attackers would almost be able to accomplish what they had now managed, but then they would perform a strange manoeuvre that would go completely against the flow of their attack, or something would go wrong in their plans; like the one time a "squad" armed with heavy weapons had had a weapon malfunction and explode. The survivors had suddenly turned against each other and the rest of the army. This time though, none of that had happened and the attack had been almost perfect in it's execution. It was as if the person directing the attacks had either been replaced or had accidentally hit upon the perfect set of instructions, or at least avoided the bad decisions.

It took nearly 2 weeks for a reason.

Interesting way of looking at it.
I was thinking more that he just has a habit of making random (you could say, chaotic ) decisions. Early hints at possible army special rules that I've considered. Although GW seems to be ahead of me with this too (random tables for everything)... My army gets more "normal" each new release...

Theophony wrote:Or is it a hint of the old programming codes from the old rogue trader days for robots .
I had not heard about these. Had to look it up. But that is something that I will add to my list...

I had a quick priming session today. I'm quite pleased that most of my work looks fine with a layer of paint on. There are a few little gaps that will have to be filled, but mostly good.

Keveev meets The Scientist:
Spoiler:
The noises of the fighting had quietened and Norma decided that she could now get back to her calculations in peace, before turning in for the night. She walked down the corridor from her sleeping quarters and exchanged brief greetings with the other scientists she passed on the way to her work area.

Keveev looked up as a tall man walked into the room. The man looked as if he belonged in some kind of crazy laboratory... or an asylum. The man smiled a broad smile. Keveev did not return it.
"Well hello there Corporal Keveev. So good to finally meet you after sampling your mind. Ha HA" The man said jovially.
The implications of what the man said were missed by Keveev. He really didn't like this man.
"What do you want?" He replied flatly.
"I want to be your friend. We're all friends here..." The man paused for a moment. "...and as friends I would like a favour."
Keveev stared blankly at the man and said "If you want something sharp inserted in your neck I can help you".
"Oh... Well, if you're going to be like that..." The man rummaged in his pockets for a minute and eventually withdrew a hand, holding a syringe. He took the syringe from the grey fingers and threw the hand over his shoulder.

Before the hand had hit the ground the man lunged, fast as lightning, and plunged the needle into Keveev's jugular vein. Before Keveev had had time to react, the contents had been injected, the man took a step back and gave him a look that a child would give a sick animal in their care. Keveev felt a warmth spread throughout his body. His back began to spasm and his jaw locked painfully, he could only manage a strangled gurgle before blackness enveloped him again.

but indeed... the old rule again works like a charm... primed everything looks as if everything was made exclusively this way from ghost hands...

as for the Keveev story...what I find intriguing is why the scientist needs one special guardsman... whats so interesting in one flatfoot for him?...

also... the small glimpse of the story of the destroyed and then turned against each other squad shows that any chaosification of the scientist is not for ever... it can be undone...(I usually take the side of the loyalists in any chaotic storyline... sorry)

Yes, the new army rules do make your army seem more "mainstream in some respects. But heh, it now is legal.

Brushed primer, I have been doing the same with all the T-storms and humidity.

Yes, well as the Scientist is chaotic, it so fits to have erratic thoughts at times.

Fluff has Keveev in serious trouble!

Ha, yeah it is brush-on, and yes it is only a thin layer and not very even. But all of my models start with a layer like this. The unevenness will be smoothed out.
Thanks.

Yeah, that is also something I'm thinking for an army special rule; head injury leading to damage to the installed gizmo, means that they revert to their original race/species actions.

You can support whoever you like. Although, I have started a piece of fluff where The Scientist is up against a chaos warband.

shasolenzabi wrote:Yes, the new army rules do make your army seem more "mainstream in some respects. But heh, it now is legal.
I'll just have to try harder to break what rules are left.

Brushed primer, I have been doing the same with all the T-storms and humidity.
I used to use a cheap airbrush to do primer and basecoats, but it broke before I even started on these models. I've still painted the main colours on larger models by hand.

Yes, well as the Scientist is chaotic, it so fits to have erratic thoughts at times.

Fluff has Keveev in serious trouble!
Indeed. You can't say The Scientist didn't give him a chance to help of his own free will...

Spoiler:
When Keveev awoke again, his head hurt. This time the pain was not localised to a lump on his head, but it was more like his brain had just been kicked about the room for a bit and then squeezed back in his skull. Keveev took in his surroundings, he was in a different room, but it was still one of the offices and still in the west wing. He could smell blood and hear running water from the bathroom next door. He sat up and looked down at the desk he had been laying on, it was covered in blood and it was likely that is was his. He reached up to his head and it had indeed been bandaged, and bandaged expertly, this was no field dressing, it was the work of a medical practitioner. What had that madman done to his head? He heard the toilet flush and then footsteps approaching...

Norma ran through the calculations again. She could visualise the equations and the plot-lines in her head far quicker and more accurately than any machine. The engines could make the jump, and if large enough, could transport a huge vessel over vast distances... ANY distances, in the blink of an eye. But navigating the jump would be a monumental task, and would have to be done almost as quickly, or you could end up in a different star system or even in the heart of a star. The best way to navigate safely would involve knowing, not just predicting, the future. There was only a few people known to be able to achieve this and many of them were Eldar in origin. Maybe a gifted psyker could, with focussed training, achieve this. But then that would be relying on the warp again, and the whole point of this project was to avoid that. She closed her notebook and decided to go to bed. Maybe things would look different in the morning...

Good start to it, look forward to more.

Moulding has started in the other thread, so that has taken over my workspace for now.

Things should become a little clearer now:
Spoiler:
"So you see..." the man continued "...I am a man of science, not religion. I am The Scientist and I work to protect the Universe from total annihilation... from the rampant spread of order."
Keveev nodded. It made perfect sense to him now. "What do you need me for?" he asked.
"I need you to help me on my quest. Open the path I must walk..." The Scientist said "...Or to put it another way, I want you to open a door." He smiled.
Keveev smiled back. "Which door? and why me exactly?" he asked.
"I need you to open a door that you don't even know exists, to an area of this base that you don't know exists, so I can meet a woman that you... don't... know... exists." The Scientist replied.
"How do I open this door then, if I don't know anything about it?" Asked Keveev.
"That is the beauty of my plan. Because you know the areas of this base that you do know, like the back of your hand, you know where to look to find something you've never noticed before." Replied The Scientist with a smile.

Keveev walked along the corridor. A corridor like many others in the base, but one that had subtle differences that only the observant would notice, that only Keveev would notice; The angle of the floor, a slight change in the direction (and even the width) of the corridor, and the distances between the doors. This last difference was the key. You wouldn't notice by looking along the corridor, the space between the office doors became larger and then smaller. The largest space being about half way along the corridor. There was a portrait of The Emperor of mankind in the centre of this space, Keveev stopped in front of it. "Here" he said.

And head games are much easier when you have electronically brainwashed someone.

Also, I will point out now, how Corporal Keveev got his name.
Vik, you asked why had he been chosen by The Scientist in particular and the above part of the fluff should partially answer that.

Keveev is someone that runs his life on regular routines, and is very observant and sensitive to changes in his environment. I've tried to put this across in the fluff above; e.g. The constant checking of the time, the mention of how long he spends in the shower, the way he walks about the base and knows where he is in the base, and in his name...

I had a look at an online thesaurus for synonyms for "observant" that would give me inspiration for a name (I really struggle to come up with names out of thin air). I eventually found "Qui vive" (which means "On the alert or lookout") and just spelled it phonetically. I think it works quite well for an observant person on guard duty.

The advantage of brush priming is that one is more likely, in my experience, to spot mold lines and other imperfections early on, when it is not so much a PITA to fix.

I find a very, very light drybrushing with gesso before airbrush priming also does an excellent job of highlighting problems that need fixing.

I second the brush priming as a good way to get to know the model you are about to paint... if it is a new model, not a run of the mill guardsman then this method help to learn each lil detail far better... thus you can plan ahead the scheme and where some details would cause a too strong brown patch... for example lots of stuff on my models need to be fabricated in leather... but you need to avoid too much of one color on different items in my view on a certain area...so getting to know your model before painting can be achieved by brush on priming first...

and the slight hint on OCD escaped me, but now in hindsight it makes sense...

and after getting the explaination for his name I slightly cringed... due to too many bad spelling kids I had to tutor already and this sounded familiar...even if it was on purpose

So it does, didn't think of that. We all have a little Asperger's in us. Sometimes it works to the advantage.

Very true and is generally what I use this stage for. I usually go on to paint my models mostly black and then work up to the lightest shades. Not the best way, but my way. It is easier to see the contrast and gaps in grey than it is in white or black.

Viktor von Domm wrote:I second the brush priming as a good way to get to know the model you are about to paint... if it is a new model, not a run of the mill guardsman then this method help to learn each lil detail far better... thus you can plan ahead the scheme and where some details would cause a too strong brown patch... for example lots of stuff on my models need to be fabricated in leather... but you need to avoid too much of one color on different items in my view on a certain area...so getting to know your model before painting can be achieved by brush on priming first...
Monochromatic paint schemes can be done, if you use a wide enough range in the shade. It's getting the contrast between neighbouring parts that's key in any model. If they are different colours, then it's easier. If they are the same colour (brown in your example) then they need to be heavily contrasted (a light brown and almost black, or a yellow/brown and a red/brown) or split by a dark edge.

and the slight hint on OCD escaped me, but now in hindsight it makes sense...

I like to sneak stuff into my fluff (especially jokes and references, and I'm building up to a really big reference ).

My spelling was hideous as a child, I wasn't diagnosed with dyslexia until secondary school so I spend many playtimes in primary school finishing the work that everyone else had during the lesson (you loose interest in doing the work when it's hard work stringing a sentence together). Access to computers and spell-check has really helped. Now, having written a 40,000 word PhD thesis, I'm fairly comfortable writing things. But it still takes a long time to compose sentences (just this post has taken me 20-30 mins), as I have to think of the best way to write something and then occasionally get stuck on a word (nearly once a sentence). It doesn't come naturally.

oh...and...MOOOAAAARRRR
K.
Spoiler:
Norma performed her usual night-time routine; brushing her hair out from the tight bun she wore while working, laying out her personal items in a neat line on the sideboard and praying to The Emperor. This time, without thinking, she also retrieved a bag from under her cot and left it next to the sideboard, she would need it but did not yet know why.

The Scientist stood at Keveev's shoulder. "what can you see in the picture?" he said.
"It's one of the most common depictions of The Emperor. But, that path there in the background. It usually disappears over the horizon... there's usually some trees, but not that building. I've never seen a building like it... and the door... it looks like a key..." He reached out and pressed his thumb against the door. It lit up and there was a click and hiss of escaping air. The painting and the section of wall it was attached to slid to one side to reveal a narrow passageway that passed between the walls of the neighbouring offices which would easily be mistaken for one wall, the hidden corridor ended at a metal door.
"Well done" Said The Scientist "I can take it from here. Take this and I shall see you later. Ha Ha." He handed a small metal sphere to Keveev and as soon as he took hold of the device he disappeared with a "fop" from the corridor, leaving The Scientist alone.

Thanks Theo. Good to hear it is comparable to a real book.

Can a metal door keep The Scientist at bay...
Spoiler:
The Scientist walked up to the metal door and studied it for a short while. An Ork approached him and saluted awkwardly "De... er... The H-ole base has been searched Boss. All rel-err-vant materials have been transported to the mothership."
The Scientist nodded absent-mindedly and pulled out a scale model of a tank from a pocket. It is the size of his palm and is bronze in colour. The Scientist presses a few buttons on top of the tank and examines a lens built into the underside of the tank, polishing it on his shirt.

The Scientist bends down and places the tank against the door near the floor by the lower hinge. It sticks in place with magnetic tracks and immediately starts to move across the surface leaving in it's wake molten metal and a cut through to the other side of the door. The tank traces a path up one side of the door, across the top and down the other side. It reaches the floor and emits a beep, The Scientist bends over and picks it up. Placing it in his pocket, he turns to the Ork, who is still saluting. "Yes, yes. Thank you number.. er.. 12, your pronunciation is coming on well, keep it up. Could you give this door a knock for me, there's a good fellow.".

Norma was awoken by an unfamiliar alarm. She sat up, looked about her room and located her tablet. Flicking it on she sees that the alarm is to signify that the door that leads to the above complex, has been breached. There are shouts from outside her door and the sound of running footsteps. She quickly dresses and hurries to the door. Opening it she stops the first person she sees and asks them what is happening.
"The door's been breached... there's a lunatic running about with an Ork... They're killing people." The breathless man said. "The guards we have down here are.. all dead... Hide yourself... or something..." He ran off without looking back. Norma shuts her door and locks it for the first time since arriving on this planet...

He has a few more lines to deliver, as it were.

Practice Vik. That's what it needs. Doesn't matter how small the steps, push the envelope a little each time, read (and ask) how others achieve their results, and in time you will improve.

I didn´t knew from the readings here that you had such issues... I think you cope very well...
Thanks. Luckily I only have a mild case of dyslexia, so it could be worse. Reading and writing/typing is just that little bit harder and takes that little bit longer, but I get there in the end.
I also have a habit of checking everything over several times before posting, the number of times I go over a sentence doesn't show on the internet as it does on a piece of paper... but you should see the tipp-ex on my computer screen

only one small issue I have with the last bit of fluff....tenses... nuff´said
Yeah, I know there are some major tense issues throughout this section of the fluff. I've been back and fourth over it many times and can't get it right. Would probably need completely re-writing, so I left it as is.

Here's a few more "tense" moments for you...
Spoiler:
Norma scoops her things into the waiting bag, ties her hair back in a quick ponytail, puts on her shoes and then freezes. The sounds outside her room are now quiet and far away. Suddenly there is a nearby scream which is cut off by the report of a firearm. The sound is thunderous in the confined area and Norma claps her hands to her ears in response. She removes them just in time to hear a man's chiding speech "Now, now. That wasn't very nice. She was only surprised to see you. No need to do that." The reply is quite clearly an Ork; "Sorry Boss". Norma picks up her hairbrush as if to defend herself with it. Her eyes are fixed on the locked door to her room.

There is a knock at the door. Norma does not move and is now barely breathing. The man's voice comes through the door to her "Norma. I know you're in there. Your name is on the door. Ha Ha."
Still petrified with fear, Norma starts to back away from the door.
"I only want to talk to you, Norma. Well, to be honest, I want to probe your mind and learn all that you know. Ha Ha. But I won't harm you, you will help me a great deal, and I will help you."

In fear and with the untapped strength of the added adrenalin, Norma throws her hairbrush at the door and screams "GO AWAY!". The handle of the hairbrush penetrates the thin door and stops when it reaches the bristles. Suddenly there is a roar from the Ork and it punches it's way through the wall of her bedroom. She clutches her bag of personal belonging to her chest as it shouts at her "You could have had somebody's eye out wiv dat!". The Scientist walks into the room behind the Ork and says "It's ok, no harm done. Be nice, Norma here is a friend. She's going to help us..." He looked at her, "I see you are ready to leave, Norma". She hugged her bag more strongly and smiled weakly at the man.

I'm glad you like him, Comrade.

Where were we...?
Spoiler:
Wide-eyed, Norma sat opposite The Scientist. Still clutching her bag, she sat quietly listening to his explanation of how his knowledge absorption technology worked, and she was fascinated. This man had a greater intellect then anyone else she had met, he was also clearly insane. But she couldn't help but listen to him, they were both scientists after all and she could learn a great deal from him, if she could stay alive to benefit from it...

They were sat in a comfortable, yet functional, room on his spacecraft. In her room, he had handed her an object; it was spherical and made of metal. As she weighed it in her hand and observed the fine detail on it's surface, there was a faint "fop", everything had gone black for a short while and she had found herself laying down in a room aboard his ship. She predicted that this technology worked on similar principals to that used by the Necrons; how he had acquired this technology, she could only guess. But she didn't need to guess that where she woke up, was not where she had arrived after the teleportation: She knew there was some missing time, and she could see that his knowledge absorption technology would allow for memory modification. He likely already knew all that she knew, so the only question was; why was she still alive?

Well you know when you have interior doors where their only purpose is to fill a hole. e.g. cheap, thin, flimsy. That's the sort of door. It wasn't a metal door or anything.

and is this a small cameo appearance that some ´crons soon will join the army of the second law?...
Necrons are one of two battleforces that I want to pick up next. But if the rumours are true, it looks like I'll be picking up the Dark Eldar box first (before it's discontinued or changed).

Not that I've started on the Tau or Ork battleforces that I already have... or even finished the Tyranid or Eldar boxes...

Well, just for you, I've added a bit of Ork to this part.

Spoiler:
"You're thinking about my little teleportation gizmos, aren't you?" The Scientist said.
Norma looked into his eyes and said "Based on the Necron phase-shift technology." It was a statement, not a question.
"Why yes, well observed." He replied. "Particularly tricky to get hold of the information required, but has proven useful... for short ranges..."
"And you want to have it working for longer ranges?" Asked Norma, although she suspected that this was not what he really wanted, but did not want to admit it to him... or herself.

At this point an Ork (huge, scarred and looking ready to charge into battle at any moment) entered the room carrying a tray on one hand. On the tray was a large glass of brown liquid with foam on top, which the Ork placed in front of The Scientist, and a small glass with a wide top and long stem. The Ork placed this second glass in front of Norma and said "Somefink for the little lady." The liquid in the glass was in two layers, the top being yellow and the lower being red, they were slowly mixing where they met. The Scientist looked up at the Ork and said "Very nice, 12. You're cocktail making is coming on in leaps and bounds. Norma just looked in puzzlement, at the small paper umbrella in the top of the glass.

The Scientist looked at Norma as the Ork left, "No no, I want something better. I want what you have been working on these past 5 years." Said The Scientist.
Norma took a breath and swallowed her fear "But what do you want me for, you already know everything I know, do you not?"
"Oo, you are sharp. I could do with you in the morning to shave with. Ha Ha." Replied The Scientist, genuinely surprised. "But actually, I need you to unlock your full potential."
Norma wondered what he could be getting at, but didn't need to wait long to find out.

Thanks hk.
Paint will happen soon-ish. I'm in the middle of cast-oppolis in the city of mould-sville and with the limited space I have, only one thing can happen at a time.

The tour...
Spoiler:
She walked beside The Scientist, through a laboratory of strange experiments, Norma had been told to follow him and he had led her on an almost impossibly complex route of his ship. She could keep track of the turns and distances easily, but was puzzled by the construction of the ship itself; it was needlessly complex. Where a simple grid layout of the rooms and corridors would do, this ship had countless twists, turns and dead-ends... and yet, still seemed to make full use of the available space.

Norma stopped next to a sealed transparent box. Inside was a small, pink, slug-like creature that briefly looked up at her and then was replaced in the blink of an eye by a teddy bear. The bear was then replaced by a bucket and spade and then a pot of red flowers. After a pause, the flowers were replaced by a small, yellow, dump truck and then in quick succession; a doll wearing a long hoop dress, a white rotary-dial telephone, a toy elephant, a hat, a baseball mitt with ball, a toy boxer, a toy drum, and a yellow lamp that lit up. Norma looked closer, fascinated, it appeared that the objects were, in fact, shape-shifting.

The lamp became a red toy car, a roller-skate, a traffic cone, a lampshade, a toy penguin, a piggy bank, a Ken doll, a blue potty, an alarm clock, a tennis ball, a tennis shoe, a large pot, a yellow ball, a floor-scrubbing brush, a bucket, a tiny blue toy whale, a statue of a tribal man, an incandescent light bulb, a red horn, a small yellow ball, a red sock, and then a fluffy white rabbit. The rabbit glanced at her and then hopped to the far side of the box. The Scientist walked up to Norma. "A little experiment in polymorphism. Not quite perfected yet." He turned away and Norma followed him, leaving behind a basketball in the box.

In the next laboratory there was a large metal sphere on a pole. As Norma watched, bolts of electricity leapt from it's surface, accompanied by a loud crack, to a variety of tall metal spikes surrounding it. Norma asked The Scientist what it was for and he replied "Well, it's just one of them, isn't it... Got to have one of them in your lab, haven't you... You can't do science without one." They walked on.

No Red Dwarf fans about.

Casting is still ongoing, but I only have about 1/3rd left of the resin, so painting will happen soon-ish.

In the mean time, I wonder who that man is...
Spoiler:
As they walked to the next lab they passed a small room, stacked to the ceiling with boxes. Some of the boxes were open, and contained pieces of paper that were covered with writing. In the middle of the room, surrounded on all sides by boxes, was a man that was wearing the standard clothing supplied on the planet that Norma had been living on. The man was picking up piece after piece of paper and reading it carefully before replacing it in the box it came from. The Scientist paused at the door and turned to Norma "This is an experiment in learning enhancement. This man already had a good mind for observation and memory and I'm working on enhancing it through drugs and training." Turning to the man he said "How are you getting on my dear fellow?"
The man looked up, "I've memorised 4296 packets of data and can draw 2 prime computations so far. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion..." The man continued to read. The Scientist walked on and Norma followed.

In the next laboratory, filled with small experiments, Norma noticed a small cube that didn't look like a cube should. It was difficult to focus on it's shape and appeared to be more than just a cube. Before The Scientist opened his mouth to explain, she said "It's a 4D cube isn't it?"
"Yes, represented in 3 dimensions. Of course all objects are 12 dimensional, that we can only see 3 of them does not stop them existing. I just thought I'd see what advantage could be gained from creating objects of higher dimensional proportions in 3 dimensions. You should see the 9D cube... that makes your eyes want to crawl under a rock. Ha Ha."

Turning left they walked down a corridor that passed the windows to several rooms. Between the various beasts and monsters that appeared to be from a mad-man's dreams, there was one room with a small child that was staring at some floating letter-cubes which were stacking and re-stacking themselves.
"Promising children..." Said The Scientist "Brilliant telekinetic powers. Ah, here we are..."

I remember the emohawk episode. And for the record, there were only 6 seasons of Red Dwarf. and 1 Highlander movie.

I'm waiting for the fic to be all written, so I can read it in one go, which is how I like to read. Currently, "The Long Earth" is in the queue for the Sunday read...and you'd better say only good things about Sir Terry.

Well, the later series did have good moments. But the first 6 are the one's to keep going back to.

Agreed on Highlander.

Ah, fair enough. If you want to read (and haven't already) some more of my army's fluff that is complete, have a look at my Compiled (Mad) fluff thread.
This piece will be added there when it's complete.

I only have good things to say about Sir Terry.

Spoiler:
The Scientist led Norma into an observation gallery. Below them was a plain room with two doors opposite each other. As she watched, the doors opened and two identical human males (or a close approximation) walked in from the opposite sides. They were large enough in build to be Astartes marines.

The Scientist turned to her "Which of these two identical clones do you think will win in a fair fight?"
"Um, I don't know much about fighting. It would have to be purely a guess without further information." She replied.
"Yes, but you have access to all the information you require, if only you knew how to access it." He looked at her expectantly.
"I don't know what you mean." She said sternly.
Without warning and as quick as a flash, The Scientist grabbed her and held a long thin blade to her neck. "This knife, that I am holding to your throat, is covered with a poison that will attack your nervous system causing intense, agonising, pain that will likely last for 30 or more hours before death. All that is needed is the slightest of cuts and only a few nanograms of poison to enter your blood stream. Tell me who will win the fight and you will come to no harm... Three..."
Held in the grip of fear once again, Norma could do nothing but utter a single word; "left"
The Scientist withdrew the knife and then knocked on the glass in front of them with the pommel. The men instantly leapt at each other and fought with their bare hands until one lay dead, his head twisted backwards. Norma had been forced to watch the whole, horrifying spectacle.

The Scientist turned to her "So, Norma. Which one won?"

Place your bets...

Good to have you back.
He has his toes dangled in many pies.

To the victor, the spoils... sometimes...
Spoiler:
Still in shock, Norma noticed that it was the man that had entered from the left. But that had only been a guess, hadn't it? She didn't like to guess, but had had to say something out of fear. "Th-The left one." She managed.
"Indeed it was... And that was no guess you made. You knew that would happen, I just had to give you a little... push, Ha Ha." Said The Scientist.
"W-what?" Said Norma weakly, still staring at the men.
"You refuse to give answers that are only guesswork, it's in your very nature. The only way you could give an answer to any question is... if you could calculate, as it were, the answer." The Scientist looked at the knife in his hand, turned to the window, opened it and gently threw it down to the victor below. The man caught the knife by the blade and immediately keeled over backwards and started writhing in pain.

The Scientist led Norma away from the window and continued to explain. "The key, my dear Norma, to your method of travel, is in you... Prescience... Yes, you can see the future, and I have something that means I don't have to hold a knife to your throat every time. Come..."

The resin has been finished off.
My desk has been cleared of casting things.
And I have started painting...

However, I've started on a commission job first. This is to get back into the swing of painting and when they're done I will start on the tank.

However, however, Gitsplitta has announced this years Mantis Maker Challenge (to start on the 27th) and I missed last years as I was in the middle of something (might have been the Wave Serpent). I'm not sure if I will complete something for this one, but I am giving it some thought. It's only small though, so shouldn't impact the tank painting like the moulding and casting have.
Spoiler:
 Gitsplitta wrote:
Annoucing the Second Annual Mantis Maker Competition!

Date: July 27th - Aug 27th
Title: Alia jacta est! ("the die is cast"... or alternatively... "cast the die")
Theme: The contest is to make a Mantis Warrior in a duel with another figure (a marine). I will have the opponent built (probably not yet painted) by the time the competiton begins so you know what you're figure needs to match with. The "display base" will be a large oval (Knight or flyer) type base. Your figure must be infantry of some sort (no vehicles) and fit on a 40mm base (though it can be any type of infantry & does not need to be confined within the 40mm base... but I want it based on 40mm so I can make the overall display correctly). On the 27th, I'll post pictures of my part of the display, as well as measurements so you know what the physical size limitations for your figure.

This is not a painting competition. Best painted won't necessarily win... the winner will be the person who has the most dynamic, exciting and jaw-droppingly creative Mantis Warrior opponent for whatever scum-bag marine that needs killin' that I create. It must also match well with my component... so biggest might not be the best (I'll leave that to you). Painting will be a factor of course, but not the deciding one.

Da Rulz...
1. Entries must be unique to this competition.
2. You must post a pic of your build and your final entry here on this blog. WIP shots are welcome here... but not necessary.
3. Each entry must be the work of one person only.
4. Deadline is 12AM GMT on Aug. 27th... whenever GMT is... I have no idea, it just sounds good.
5. You are strongly encouraged to help each other out. Visit each others plogs, etc. We are a big, global family of nerds... let's support each other!
6. Other rules as I think of them. I'll have the final set by the 27th.

Da Kategoreez - these don't "stack", one per person

"I'm here to chew bubblegum and kick a$$, and I'm all out of bublegum!" (Grand Prize):
"It is better to look good than to feel good, and I look mahvelous!" (best painted)
"To go where no man has gone before." (most original idea).
"A good stretch of the legs." (person who worked the farthest beyond their capabilities)
"Ill be back." (person with the most improved entry from last year to this one)

Da Prizez
Each of the winners will get something... easily transferable. Unlike last year where I spent 10x the value of each prize in shipping because the European contestants kicked the American's butts all over the gaming table. I'm thinking something like credit with one of the bits makers... like Zinge perhaps, or maybe another company in the US for any winners (just in case any of you p-knockers manage to step up your game this year). Maybe I can get a bit of a break from someone... we'll see. The grand prize winner will also get the display base including my figure... all painted, based and ready to show off their fine work. Neat thing is I'll be painting my end of the diorama at the same time you'll be working on yours. (That way I can mess with everyone's head while the comp is going on.) If you (personally) or your company would like to sponsor a prize, just PM me. I don't expect anyone to do it, but you never know unless you ask. I'm thinking each of the prizes will be about $25 in value (US) if I'm paying. If you're paying, the sky is the limit but I'd like to keep it at or above $25 (that's what... about 2 pounds now??). *sigh*

I am looking for a small cadre of judges. I would prefer folks who have a good eye for design and technique, but you don't have to be an experienced judge. I'd also prefer folks would be willing to help people with constructive feedback after the competition is over. I will however, keep your identities private during the competition SO BY THUNDER DON'T POST YOUR DESIRE TO BE A JUDGE ON THIS BLOG! PM me please.

Lastly... as you know I haven't been very active on dakka for quite a while (just taking a break, enjoying my boat and my family) so I suspect only the hard-core followers are still keeping up with this blog. I would very much appreicate it if you would help generate some buzz for the competition by cross-posting this announcement on your own blogs.

Comps are so much more fun when there's a good variety of people involved and the ideas that came out of this competition last year were really inspiring. I'd love to see some new and/or young hobbyists involved. That's why the "good stretch of the legs" category is there. You don't have to be fantastic... just show that you really put yourself to the test, tried some new techniques and experimented. Competitons are a good excuse to learn and practice new skills, expand your horizons and just take chances you might not normally take.

That's it for now. Please spread the word. You don't have to commit now... but a few bumps of this post never hurt!

Gits

And one last thing. Here is where the story ends...

The story so far (for those that want a recap or to read it in it's entirety (I've also fixed most of the tense issues... maybe):

---
Keveev checked the time again and then started walking his patrol along the outer defence wall.

---
A new fire had broken out in the jungle to the east.

---
Keveev scanned the tree-line to his left and spotted the first signs of the tank's approach; trees falling.

No one on his side of the wall knew, and as far as Keveev knew, he didn't much care why. They were the enemy whatever they were wearing.

---
The tank emerged from the trees in an explosion of splintered wood.

---
The gate had been built to withstand even greater impacts than the walls, but only from the outside.

---
When Keveev awoke he head ached.

---
The noises of the fighting had quietened and Norma decided that she could now get back to her calculations in peace, before turning in for the night.

---
When Keveev awoke again, his head hurt.

---
"So you see..." the man continued "...I am a man of science, not religion.

---
Norma performed her usual night-time routine; brushing her hair out from the tight bun she wore while working, laying out her personal items in a neat line on the sideboard and praying to The Emperor.

---
The Scientist walked up to the metal door and studied it for a short while.
The Scientist pressed a few buttons on top of the tank and examined a lens built into the underside of the tank, polishing it on his shirt.

The Scientist bent down and placed the tank against the door near the floor by the lower hinge. It stuck in place with magnetic tracks and immediately started to move across the surface leaving in it's wake molten metal and a cut through to the other side of the door. The tank traces a path up one side of the door, across the top and down the other side. It reached the floor and emitted a beep, The Scientist bent over and picked it up.

She quickly dressed and hurried to the door. Opening it she stops the first person she sees and asks them what is happening.
"The door's been breached... there's a lunatic running about with an Ork... They're killing people." The breathless man said. "The guards we have down here are.. all dead... Hide yourself... or something..." He ran off without looking back. Norma shut her door and locked it for the first time since arriving on this planet...

---
Norma scoops her things into the waiting bag, ties her hair back in a quick ponytail, puts on her shoes and then freezes.

She's going to help us ..." He looked at her, "I see you are ready to leave, Norma". She hugged her bag more strongly and smiled weakly at the man.

---
Wide-eyed, Norma sat opposite The Scientist.

---
"You're thinking about my little teleportation gizmos, aren't you?" The Scientist said.

You're cocktail making is coming on in leaps and bounds". Norma just looked in puzzlement at the small paper umbrella in the top of the glass.

---
She walked beside The Scientist, through a laboratory of strange experiments, Norma had been told to follow him and he had led her on an almost impossibly complex route of his ship.

---
As they walked to the next lab they passed a small room, stacked to the ceiling with boxes. Some of the boxes were open, and contained pieces of paper that were covered with writing. In the middle of the room, surrounded on all sides by boxes, was a man that was wearing the standard clothing supplied on Cisoco, his head was bandaged.

---
The Scientist led Norma into an observation gallery.

---
Still in shock, Norma noticed that it was the man that had entered from the left.
Come..."

And the final part:
Spoiler:
Norma allowed herself to be led into a dimly lit room that appeared to have wooden panels on the walls and a bar for serving drinks in one corner, a large Ork weapon was resting on the bar surrounded by many multi-coloured drinks. The rest of the room was filled with tables and comfy chairs. She was glad of the chance to sit down and The Scientist sat opposite her.

"Here..." He said pulling a small tin from one of his pockets "...is a compound I found on a distant planet. Long lost to history, it was a barren place that had become a fertile land for a while before returning to barren sand, being almost entirely cleansed by fire... of a sort." He put the tin down on the table, unopened. She could detect a faint cinnamon odour.

"On this planet, huge creatures existed that led a linked existence with this compound. I found the last surviving few of these creatures and... a small amount of this... shall we say, spice." He opened the tin. It was full of a reddish-brown powder. The faint smell, now hit her nostrils like a hammer. Norma recoiled slightly.

"It is entirely safe, generally. I have managed to synthesise it in large quantities, no small feat in itself. It will extend the life of those that use it, with the side-effect that you will be addicted to it for all that life, and acquire a slight discolouration to the eyes." He waved his hand dismissively.

"I don't use it myself, no need to, but I have had some success with certain... candidates. They refer to themselves as... what was it... ah, Free Men. This is because of the best thing about this compound, it will expand your mind and allow you to tap in to your prescience. With a high enough exposure you will be able to navigate the folding of space, as you call it." He pushed the tin slightly towards her. Norma licked her lips, her eyes were locked on the tin. Her head was spinning, the room seemed lighter than it had been when they had entered and The Scientist's voice, clearer somehow. At the back of her mind she had a thought, a feeling, a vision, of floating in a tank of orange gas while the universe folded around her.

"With your designs, your gift, your mind, and... what... I've got... Heh... We can make this happen..." Exclaimed The Scientist excitedly. "Your engines allow for travel outside of our membrane, bend it over and take a short-cut through the bulk to pop to wherever we like. All without having to bother with the warp and their 'brane. This can actually happen and you know that the Imperium wouldn't have let you even try anyway, they are too scared of new things. Try some, and start your journey... our journey, Norma Cenva."

Norma reached forward to the tin...

Thanks.

Also, Littletower had a useful for suggestion for the ink-bleeding problem: set the printer to print on glossy paper but still use normal paper. I love it when I learn new things.

Well thank you for the encouragement then.

I saw. Very interesting and shall have to give it a go at some point.

Indeed it was. I like me some Dune and couldn't resist adding it in to my (Mad) fluff.
In addition to these and the Red Dwarf references, there are;
The various toilet references for the current League competition and my latest items up for sale.

The continuing reference to the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and the noise of the teleportation ("fop" the noise the Kricket robots make when they teleport).

The 3D representation of a 4D cube, which has actually been done.

Although that is an animated 2D representation of a 3D representation of a 4D cube...

Now he can paint his tank
Soon... Got to get my painting head on right first.

I first encountered the word in an old Dragon mgazine article about dungeon design of all things (back in AD&D 1e days. Yeah, I'm a grognard.), then again in physics classes. I'm glad I was able to bring it to your attention. Always cool to stumble upon little nuggets of knowledge.

Indeed. Ta. Always keen to learn new things.

Initial reaction was "Huh?". Have now looked it up. The Scientist finds this information interesting...

Other than the recent fluff I have been quiet over here for quite a while. Well, no more...

Good to see it primered in black!

I was referencing fluff from the Necron codex, the GK codex has that inquisitor, she has the grav pistol, a DE soul blade and the tesseract to trap opponents in. even a Monstrous creature can be caught this way.

Trazyn is a collection junky. He may give something he no longer needs in exchange for a coveted item for him to collect.

Yeah, that's a good "in" for the fluff.

Thanks. Hopefully my vision will become clearer with each layer of paint.

Meph wrote:Oh, that Predador looks wicked. I'm eager to see it painted.
Thanks Meph, and welcome.
I'm still concerned that the painting has to live up to the building... One step at a time and it will come together eventually.

cormadepanda wrote:Proof of painting is relaxing.
Good good.
It's nice to be finally ticking this off the "to do" list. Long way to go yet...

Base green.
I'm not expecting to go much lighter than this (although highlights and upper faces will be, if you know what I mean). Yes it is still a little streaky in places and I'm still finding spots that I missed with the black. This will be fixed in time. EDIT: although it looks darker in real life than the picture here (your monitors may vary).

I'm still unsure of what will happen with the meeting points of the interior and exterior, so I'm allowing myself to be a little messy about those areas as they will be cleaned up when I decide if they will be light or dark.

Once this has dried properly (which is where the streaks have been coming from), I will do the base layer(s) of the warpaint markings (a dark turquoise) and we will all get an idea of how this scheme will work. After that, I will start to use the smaller brushes and fill in and blend the colours towards their final shades...

...That's the plan anyway...

Thanks.

While nowhere near the final colours (and some of the angles will change slightly), this should give you an idea of where the war-paint is going.

Let's see...

nerdfest09 wrote:Yeah man! that works like a charm :-) looks wickedly good with some paint now. The warpaint is just about perfect in its application.
Thanks Nerdy. I'm still honing in on the final war-paint shapes, but getting there.

Theophony wrote:Almost to good dr an agent of entropy. The lines are so nice.
Thanks. It's things like this where I like to show the madness and dual nature of The (Mad) Scientist in subtle ways. He is devoted/obsessed with entropy, as you say, and in breaking the "rampant" spread of order in the galaxy. In order (no pun intended) to do this he needs an efficient operation, as he only has a "relatively" small army with which to topple all the other races in the galaxy.

Otherwise, a truly chaotic army just wouldn't function. All machinery would be shunned as too ordered, even living beings are too ordered when you come to it. So, he tolerates a little order, in order to spread disorder... As I've said before, he doesn't want to completely destroy all order, just to balance the scales between order and chaos.

Also, being a scientist, he does like to have his equipment in good working order. So all vehicles, armour and equipment are repaired and maintained regularly. Their function may be chaotic, but his inventions work effectively... well the ones that make it out the lab do... He has time on his side, being practically immortal he can continue to work on an experiment or invention until it does what it's supposed to.

Does that answer the question? Probably not... in short; some order is required to efficiently produce disorder.

Plus needs a bumper sticker saying "I broke for Chaos"
I'll think about something along those lines.

shasolenzabi wrote:he will have his main colors, then he can "chip" it, "rust" it, "corrode" it

inmygravenimage wrote:By scabs I mean crusty rust that could almost be organic. Nice camo, too.
Oh, I see. There won't be much rust, as I rambled about above; The Scientist likes to maintain his equipment. But there will be chips in the paint, etc... due to the nature of how this tank works (you don't run through a forest and a concrete wall without damaging the paint...).
Thanks.

MagosBiff90 wrote:I love this beast! Details on every surface and a real level of character! Got to admit... when you see the first coat of paint over a scratchbuilt / kitbash.... its awesome... really brings it together! Top work!

Red Harvest wrote:Aww, no chips, no rust... A good Scientist will keep his equipment in good working order.
Exactly.

No airbrush?
No. Well, I have a broken one. But it is only an external mix one that ran off of cans. I will get a new one, one day. Can't afford it at the moment. I've done much larger models by brush before, so it's no major problem.

Looks like a promising start. Won't say it's about time, no. No I won't.
Thanks. I'm glad that you won't...

Right, so I've tidied up the shapes and I've done the turret to match:

Now to work on the colours and shading...

 Solar_lion wrote:

Thanks Solar. The aim is to make the blue more turquoise-like. But will remain (hopefully) a similar dark shade. The final effect will be to break up the shape of the tank, but also to almost merge together (or to stand out) under the right lighting, just to really confuse the opposition.

I'm going to try some experiments first as I have to mix the turquoise anyway (don't have a pot), so I'll find the right shade... or if the blue works better, I'll stick with that.

The (Mad) Scientist and his Army of the Second Law: Beware of the Red Legion Space Marine! @ 2014/08/01 17:08:18

Post by: Dr H

Right, so the turquoise didn't quite turn out as turquoise-y as I was aiming for, but I was only getting dirty green or pale blue-grey with most of my mixtures.
This is the colour I've ended up with anyway. There is some subtle shading on the ... we'll call it blue ... if you look closely (the lines should be slightly darker in the middle). This may become enhanced later in the painting process. Also, highlights will be done later too.

Next job will be to do the same with the green (although probably not quite so subtle with the shading). This will also sharpen up some of the lines that have spread a little in painting the blue (not to mention the occasional blue fingerprint...).

What do we think of the colour choice?

I've gone one better and added it to my blog link banner.

cormadepanda wrote:Currently everything is looking flat dr. Let me know how it progresses.
Hopefully it will look less flat as I progress.

On that note, I've spent hours wet-blending the green areas and even though one of the paint mixes was nearly black and the other a lighter green than the base green... it's still ended up too subtle...
Try and spot anything that shows that I've spent hours on this tank since last time.

It should, at least, look neater...

The shading will be brought out more with some dry-brushing (as I know I can make that work and doesn't take hours). Then I will be able to move on to the details... after the metals...

Ha. If we take out the 2-3 pages of fluff I added I've got more time... Or I could stop posting updates until it's finished

No major update today, I've cleaned up the parts I wasn't quite happy with and have given the whole tank a layer of matt varnish (just to help with cleaning up slips with the other colours to come). I've now got to look at what I want in other colours and what will stay as it is.

Drybrushing is... well, I do it too. Shameful admission of Shame :( With Green and blue you really do need a good contrast for it to work. Make a B&W image of the tank to see how much you have, and adjust accordingly.

 Red Harvest wrote:

There's nothing wrong with dry-brushing, no shame needed. It's a very useful technique and is perfect for certain circumstances.
I'm just trying to improve my painting skills by trying new things and pushing what I know to it's limits. I've got dry-brushing down and do resort to it when other methods fail and use it exclusively for some things (metals usually).

I'm not knocking it or those who use it primarily, it's a good technique to know and use.
Like any technique it can be used well or badly, keep practising and you can do just as pretty a model and some manage with other techniques.
I think the trick is to be gentle and build the colour gradually. Like I did for the black on the Ravenwing bikers; two passes of shades of grey over black (just as an example, I'm not the best at painting or trying to show off ).

But it's very easy to go too far with dry-brushing and you get splodges of colour and not a gradual shading. You can see a bit of this on the biker above if you look closely.
Also, you have to make sure to remove any unwanted surface details on the model (mould-lines for example), as dry-brushing will find them and make them stand out.

With Green and blue you really do need a good contrast for it to work. Make a B&W image of the tank to see how much you have, and adjust accordingly.
The idea I had was to make the two colours fairly close in shade. While I am using a camouflage pattern, it's not meant as camouflage for the tank and so I didn't want them too contrasting as it would break up the shape of the tank (what camo' is designed to do) and I want the tank to retain it's shape.

B&W piccie just for you, Red.

Ah, are you familiar with Mach Bands?

I was joking about the drybrushing... I know a few, erm, hobby snobs. Me, I use whatever technique accomplishes my goals. Try drybrushing with oils sometimes. Quite interesting results, generally better than with acrylics.

My eyes say more contrast. A lighter blue (and more red to it) perhaps?

That's pretty much what I am doing, I use Humbrol enamel paint. No acrylics here... well except the interference paints and the few other I got to work with them.

My eyes say more contrast. A lighter blue (and more red to it) perhaps?
The blue bits do (well were intended to) have a lighter edge and darker middle. I may go back and emphasise that side of the effect at some point.

You and your "red", almost as if you have some kind of link to the colour...

In the mean time I've started on the "grey" metals.
Most are only base coated (gunmetal) and washed with black. They will soon get a dry-brushing of silver.

However, since I first tried the "rub 'n' buff" type paint I bought ages ago, I wanted to have something large to coat and see how it works...

...cue, dozer blade.

However, however, as the paint is based on a different solvent to all the other paint I have (smells like isopropanol... quite nice actually) it dries far quicker and it also requires you to keep it mixed (almost constantly) for it to work properly. This all meant that I ended up with not a smooth finish to the paint once it had dried, a less than ideal result.

So, I thought I'd try out the finest sand paper I had to hand (P600) and I ended up with a really nice scratched metal look, perfect for a dozer blade.

Check it out, yo...

I'm glad you both like it so much.
Here is, quite possibly the simplest tutorial... in the WORLD (insert your own J. Clarkson voice).
Buy paint,
Paint the paint on the thing you want painted,
Polish the painted thing that you have just painted with the paint once the paint has dried,
Apply gentle sanding with fine sandpaper...
Done!

There may be other brands out there that do the same thing, but it really is that simple, no tricks, just paint (a special paint, but just paint).

Yeah, it's quite possible, that if the tank had been painted a light colour and the blade a dark colour, it would have looked bigger.

There will be a bit more done to the dozer. Dust, dirt, blood (maybe), more specific scratches, and maybe some painted on teeth as discussed previously.

Yup. Going to use this one. Would you mind if I linked to it from another forum? Had some talk about using aluminum foil to get the right look. This is much, much better.

I have 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper instead of P600 (380 grit?). Now to get some of that Humbrol. Apparently, like Milliput, it is hard to get over here, so I may settle for an equivalent.

Thank you very much good sir

Link away, not a problem.
Yeah, about 380 grit. A coarser paper may also work, but would give a different result.. better, worse, I don't know, I tried this one to avoid leaving scratches... one of those moments of serendipity. (get in, I even spelt that right on the first attempt. sorry, I got stuck on that word for a while, you nearly got a lengthy description in it's place) 400 grit and finer should also be fine.

I'm sure there must be equivalents. Look for rub 'n' buff, or some similar phrase.

Glad to be of help.

Progress report: There hasn't been much, or at least much that is visible.
I've finished (for now) the grey metals,
I've tidied the edges where the inside meets outside (I did consider doing these in red, like museum cutaways, but thought that it would distract in the end),
The pistons have gone from metal to matt black to gloss black (via considerations of green, yellow and red),
The ejectable, black-box camera thing has been painted in the typical black-box red/orange colour (so that it can be found if the tank is destroyed).

I have an idea for the (rather plain) metalwork of the dozer's support structure, I just had to get the metal finish...erm... finished.
I have also noticed today that the outside of tanks are generally devoid of markings/signs/etc... Coming from an aircraft modeller, this was surprising. But it makes sense. So that will save time and transfers (although there will be a few notices added together with the tank's number).
I've also found some areas for hazard stripes, so that will be nice.
The list of things to do is getting noticeably shorter.

In other news...
The League of extraordinary riveters terrain competition has entered the next round. Congratulations to Red Harvest for winning the "Throne" round.
This round it will be Roads.
Make a piece of terrain that involves a road. Anything that could be considered a road. What could be simpler? Anyone can do that. Give it a go, have fun, learn new things. Fabulous prizes to be won...

Thanks Nerdy.

Here's the idea I had for the support structure.
Green stripes and bare metal (in place of the "blue").
May need another coat before highlighting, but you get the idea.

Yes, it does go all the way around and underneath...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And the hazard striping. You've got to be careful round the back of this dozer blade, you could hurt yourself...

May need a few little touch-ups once the yellow has dried.

Yeah, I quite like how they are hidden away behind the dozer and just peek out when you look from the right angle.

Warboss_Waaazag wrote:I like them stripes, sir.
Glad you both like them.

While I work up the motivation to start the highlighting (just thinking about all the hard edges makes me feel tired), I have attacked the roll (of whatever material and purpose you can imagine) with some paint.

In the grim-darkness of the far future, leather straps are still leather straps and blue nylon rope is still blue nylon rope...
I decided to do the material in a light colour to contrast with the dark colour of the tank.
I used a metallic blue on the rope to give it that sheen that nylon rope has.
The leather is just a gloss brown with some lighter matt brown dry-brushed over the edges.

I'll see you all again, when I've done the highlights...

Good good.

Highlighting!
Some bits may need some tweaking etc... but progress.

I have also basecoated the brassesss and the coppers and the golds. They all look the same colour at the moment...

Grats on 100.

Thank you all. I didn't imagine when I started this blog, that it would reach 100 pages so soon and I didn't expect that the majority of those 100 pages would be for 2 models (This tank and the WS). Thank you for your support and ideas. I have many more ideas to work on and I hope you will continue to follow along in my (Mad) wake.

Thanks. Considering the prevalence for dozer blades in the 41st millennium to be painted in large hazard stripes, you're probably right.

monkeytroll wrote:Oohh..happy 100

Thanks. Little by little, the little details turn a dull piece of plastic into a real (albeit in scale) object.

Well maybe they've been welded together from sections of pipe as the ork engineer hadn't heard of a mandrel*. I'll do some proper ones just for you, next time I'm doing exhausts.

*Again, something I was aware of (and had even used) but did not know the name of.

Thanks, Cam. It is getting nearer to completion; when the things you are painting get below a certain percentage of the overall size, you know you are getting close to the end.

The brassy bits are only my usual brass basecoat that I use for anything brass, copper or gold. In the same way that grey metals get a gunmetal basecoat.
Strangely, that brass paint is labelled as "matt" rather than "metallic", unlike all the other metallic paints I have. It's not as if it has much of a matt finish to it either...

Thanks. And it's good that I at least had a picture to show at the time too.
Glad you like them. They have both had a little tidying since.

MagosBiff90 wrote:Happy Hundred!!

Thanks Magos. Details are where the fun is.

So, as I mentioned, the things that I am on to painting are now the smaller pieces of the model.
And I reached the point of writing the final (well, the only. But I only write this towards the end of a job) check list of what is left to do and am ticking things off as I go. Not many things left, but some of them are big jobs such as the lenses (13 in all), the Giger tank-art (which will be hard) and weathering (which has to be done last and will make or break the look).

Also, the updates have reached the point of "spot the difference".
So, today's update is, look see, I painted the tank-phone door red, and a little light on top red, and the golds and brassessss (although I may give them a dilute wash of brown once they are dry), and I gave the tracks a quick going over (but they will be dirtied up quite a bit so didn't put much into it), and...and...tidied the highlights and things...

Haven't fully decided on a colour for the lenses yet. A cool blue is currently winning. Also considering a yellow/orange to match the gunner's eyes...
Any and all thoughts welcome.

Spotted the red door

Looking good still

With the overall colour I'd say an orange/yellow would be good for the lenses.

The exterior looks a little too clean, IMO. I realize that this is a work in progress, though. Maybe for the lenses a glossy dark red, like those caps they put over flashlights/torches to protect the user's night vision?

Orange/yellow. You need some warm color accents. The red was a good start (but you knew I would say that.)

Good good. Observation points to you then.
The red door now has a purpose. See below.

Ta. If only I could do them as well as Nerdy...

Yes, this will get many scratches, paint chips, etc... as well as dust and dirt.
Ta. I know what you mean. I can do them.
I'll give the yellow/orange a go first and if I can't get them to work (I tried orange/yellow gems on the WS and they didn't work as well as I'd hoped) I can still do them red.

Red Harvest wrote:Orange/yellow. You need some warm color accents.
Makes sense. I'll give them a try.

Just for you.

I've started on the smaller details. If I've done them right, you should be able to tell what they are.

lol
I was seeing it more as an emergency phone/radio for contacting HQ while utilising the extra power available in the tank for added signal strength. But maybe there could also be an option to contact the interior of the tank (although what kind of response you would get from the linked minds of an Ork and a Tyranid, is anybody's guess ).

Thanks. Yeah, it has turned into an exercise in detailed modelling. And once I'd started with the small details I couldn't not add them all over...

inmygravenimage wrote:The phone is great, but the blue-ing on the barrels is excellent
Thanks Graven. Glad you like it. Took a couple of attempts to get it to this point and had to stop as I was beginning to make it worse.
I was following a tutorial for acrylic paints, but I need to find a better method for what I'm using to make life easier.

So, lenses...
These have taken 3 attempts (at about an hour each) to get to this stage. Not my best work, but some of them are quite tricky to get a good angle on.
As they look better in the photos than I think they do IRL, I think I'll leave them like this.

This leaves; Transfers, Tank-Art and Weathering... Unless I've forgotten something... which is always possible...

Oh yeah, In other news, I popped out to watch Guardians of the Galaxy.
An OK film. Not spectacular, but fun and watchable.
Good '80s references (and music), Good humour, but some cringey moments and some things could have had more work put into them / developed further.

Bipedal raccoons are a scary thought. You Europeans, and neat Europeans, have no idea what those critters can get up to.

Lenses look good. a final white/near white dot in the upper left corners? I know you said you'd leave them...

The weathering will be very interesting to see. One heavily modified, but 'gently used' tank.

monkeytroll wrote:I'm with Red....a white spot up in the corner of the lens really helps sell the look when glossed.
Thanks chaps. I'm always in two minds about adding the white dot with a gloss finish. These are done in gloss (although it doesn't really show in that photo) and I always wonder if you should leave it for light to add the dot, but then it's not always in the right place. OR paint on the dot and then you end up with two dots when the light is in the wrong place. I probably will add them. Next time I have the white out.

So, I've added the transfers and other markings to the tank. I was tempted to add many warning signs etc.. but in the end I resisted and only added a few. You'll see these later when I have them all looking right (hiding edges, matching background colour and varnish).

I have therefore started thinking about the tank-art. You will remember that I'm aiming to pay a homage to H. R. Giger.
The following are a few initial ideas, roughly sketched out, in scale, to see how things might fit and how they would look.
Being Giger, some are a little NSFW:
Spoiler:

A few observations after these attempts:
1. Trying to replicate the work of an artist of this calibre is really ing hard.
2. The designs that completely fill the area are a bit too much. I like the way the camo' wraps around the edges and I think I want to keep that.
3. The more NSFW stuff is going to prove too difficult to pull off and not look excessive, he hides them so well, I don't think I would be able to. They would also require the larger space as mentioned above.
4. Filling the small space is possible, but a bit restrictive in it's shape and size.
5. I quite like the babies design.
6. I may consider taking a "usual" pin-up girl and Giger-ify her. (I will look into this next)
7. I don't think the "birth machine" baby works, and it's tricky to change the perspective like I tried here.
8. The skull drilling design would be quite suitable for 40k and all it's skulls. So that's a possibility, Does require me to paint a realistic looking skull though.

Thoughts, Ideas, etc...

The (Mad) Scientist and his Army of the Second Law: Beware of the Red Legion Space Marine! @ 2014/08/13 20:57:44

Anything without skulls. The babies are interesting. Maybe a little effort with image manipulation to get an idea how it may look. A Giger pin-up? Now that has potential. Creepy, weird and lots of potential. Explore that, just to see where it goes. After all, some day you'll scratch-build the Scientist's Lab, and need some wall art for it...

lol Are you sure it doesn't need more skulls.

I may do that with the final concepts. For these I wanted to get an idea of the effort it would take to do these in scale.

A Giger pin-up? Now that has potential. Creepy, weird and lots of potential. Explore that, just to see where it goes. After all, some day you'll scratch-build the Scientist's Lab, and need some wall art for it...
I couldn't really find any pin-ups that were in a pose that would work in the space. However, I will definitely save this idea for the future... I may even do one as practice before attempting the tank art (knowing me, that may even turn into several).

Also, I'm starting to lean towards doing a small entity as the tank-art rather than a whole picture/scene. A single baby or one of these;

Although, avoiding a large picture kind of rules out the necronomicon, and avoiding skulls leaves the lips and tongue... which I do quite like.

Got to have one each side, so a baby or two on one side and the lips on the other...?

Also: While I was going through my transfers I came across these and thought that they would be good on the dozer.

I had to touch up the metal around them and polish/scratch again. May still get a little more attention.

And as another question, do I add more "painted on" teeth on the dozer. Possibly from the top of the blade. Or do I leave it like this?
I am planning a splat/smear of blood on one side, so that will add some colour anyway... and it will get some dirt and scratches also.

The (Mad) Scientist and his Army of the Second Law: Beware of the Red Legion Space Marine! @ 2014/08/13 22:23:59

For the dozer I'd say those teeth are enough 'decoration' for it, as you say, there'll be some dirt and splatter on there to add a bit of colour/texture to it, that should be enough.

For the art, I think the lips are the best fit so far...if I recall correctly the art is done by the crew under the tacit consent of the Scientist and not directed by him...? It was a while back we had this discussion so I may be remembering wrong I'd say that the combined artistic output of an ork and a 'nid who have undergone mind re-programming would tend towards something as 'simple' in concept as that.....and seems to be a good fit for their respective 'cultures' in a twisted kind of way.

Could just be me though

Cool. I think those tusks give enough of an impression that the 'blade is the "mouth" of the beast, without going comical.

Yeah, pretty much. It doesn't necessarily have to be the crew of the vehicle doing the painting. The Scientist has "recruited" artists as well as engineers and warriors. Everyone is welcome in the Army of the Second Law. I had an idea (that I'll do at some point) of a vehicle that had had one half painted by an Eldar, where it is all crisp, clean and pretty, and the other half had been painted by a Grot that has access to all the same paint and equipment, but none of the talent...

Also, thinking further into this, the Ork is wired into the tank in such a way as to consider it his "skin". The tank-art is therefore like he's getting a tattoo, with his thoughts influenced by the tyranid (that is wired into "his" tank body), the lips are indeed something I can see him/them choosing.

Also also, I may only do one piece of art. As the Electron cannon does block most of that side, the art there won't really be seen much. Ooo, I'll do a quick mock up... 2 secs...

Not that I'll be able to recreate it that well. but a few tweaks here and there. I can see that working, and being recognisable as Giger.

Yes... Although this may take quite a bit of practice...
Here's the first attempt and how I built it up (I'm going to try a few different ways of building the colour).
Started with a black outline of the shape and then filled that in with white.
Then, added the basic outline of the details in black.
Then shaded and filled in the fine detail, using a brown/black then a white/brown then white.
Followed by touching up with the white, white/brown and black.

It looks hideous close up, but from a distance is looks slightly better. Still not quite right yet.
The square that I've drawn out as a boundary is 35mm2, just so you can judge the scale.
