Please do not expect any kind of sensible here, it has grown and the community have given me so much to add to it. There is everything here Orky. I will compile a shortcuts list before too long.
Many years ago I started an Ork army, and have never really given up, this is now many years on and several incarnations later. The one thing you will not find here is anything close to a cohesive army. I believe the "Rules" are wrong on that. In my universe 2 armies are never equal when they meet, in my universe the Ork Horde is made of many different factions all under one WAAAAGH! I am primarily a modeller and have not played in years really, but I do kind of lean toward the various codex archetypes, so you will find bands of boys and bike squads, and eventually Dakka Jets, but you will also find many things which are very unique, and would struggle to be "counts as". My Orks make things to work, not to conform to some specific size/shape/design/colour. And my Orks can't put a rivet (I really love rivets!) but they can't put Rivets in a straight line if there life depended on it.
So welcome to my silly little blog.
Warboss Thunderfarter da turd.
The beginning....
So I have been at this a long time and this is the third incarnation of Thunderfarter.
Those quite quick among you will notice 2 sets of AOBR orks. Thus I wondered what the heck I was doing purchasing a 3rd box set the other day, but the Vastly reduced price the guy let me have it for due to Dark Vengence, I could not resist.
So now I have 20 more ork boys all the same as the last, but this time I am inspired, ( thank you Arakasi. Whose blog I read just a few days ago and have been inspired to stop knocking out barely painted models and start making cool deffkoptas and Killakans that stomp on stuff.) Now I will convert the clone troopz to look different, to fullfil a new task.
So 5 bodies where used to use up the Burner boy arms left in the loota pack.
Then to convert 9 boyz to shootas. (pics follow this)
My big failing and possibly bonus, for need creates inspiration, is I can not wait. I have ordered materials to make guns and convert models, but they will take too long!!!!! So instead I root around and find some small bits of this and that. I have read the amazing work some people have done making models from round tube and styrene boards, and will shortly be trying it. But the shootas are in my head now, and I must do them, NOW.
So some motherboard mounting bolts, a few drinking straws, some superglue and a bit of masking tape, followed by liberal coats of paint and this lot appeared.
I think orks should look grungy and rust around the edges, but no self respectin boyz is going to battle without a fresh lick of paint is dah??
And I love some of the old models, the kommandoes Got repainted with desert camo, as they is now proper sneeky gits, as apposed to the silly old days of bright red or blue.
I believe the one most important thing that every one seems to forget about orks is they are not stupid lumbering nitwits. But a race who do nothing but fight. They do not live to conquer or to have dominion over they do not wish to play political games all they do is fight. Ofcourse their weapons are sometimes a little crude, but it makes them no less effective. Orks dont waste time on social graces or anything all they do is fight, And worst of all, the ones you will probably meet in battle will be the ones who are very good at it.
So a few more pics of the models,
First some of the boys with the converted shootas,
Then a few of the deffkopta conversion and its base. This is currently getting a slight remodel as one of the kids accidently knocked it over and has managed to do some damage, which I am in the process of right know.....
Please some one make a comment even if its "your crap"
This is a converted warboss model to make my big mek, the idea being the torch etc. are just classed as mek tools. He will be getting his own trukk and a bunch of grots for company.
The idea behind it was that it should be able to drag a landraider off the battle field. To be made proper orky like back at the workshop. But should only really be a trukk. That can transport himself and his grots. All whom I plan on actually fitting onto it in battle, as opposed to the usual affair of a rather small trukk saying it can get hundreds of orkses into the back? I have always thought GW trukks very small.
The tracks are a bit small for my liking and I am having doubts, they are landraider tracks, the set from each side minus the longest piece, put together on custom side plates. Maybe loose them and use them on grot tank project I hope to get going, and either make bigger track set or use some wheels??
Lots of interesting conversions in here, I particularly like the kan stomping marine and the arterial spurt from the kopta buxsawed marine. Those just look cool and give lots of character.
On the tow truck : Its looking pretty plain right now, set it next to the truck you scratch built to see what I mean. I think the tow truck could use some more random plates, and of course Rivets! That will orky up anything!
Sorry no update as all my stuff has been shoved away for the christmas. Just 24 more hours and I can invade the table again. (just not fair, why could we eat christmas dinner off our laps for crying out loud?)
Thank you for your encouragement, and your own inspiring work which I trying to follow.
Maybe, theres loads of things you could make this into but i think the best thing to do would be to make it into something you will use often . ive got a custom stompa thats 890 points but i never get to play it which sucks. make what you will get to play with or that you will enjoy.
Automatically Appended Next Post: also just relised what you did with those shoota boyz, AWESOME! i think the poses could still be messed with but the whole sluggas to shootas thing was cool
You see when you have millions of orks to try and get onto a deploymentzone the size of a postage stamp, guns sticking out sidey ways is a pain footprint is eveything, so stick the guns in the air!!! stand more chance of hitting something anyways (BS2)
Also get fed up with the arguments about LOS. " I can see his barrel sticking out??!!!"
Why do people think models actually stand behind a wall with one arm sticking out, so the whole world can see where they are??
Back at it after hectic holidays finally getting in aty my models..
So heres the trukk, bit of work done
Thnking about front end, I fancy a bit of a pointy snow plow thing but not sure if that will just be too much. It will make it very big, its big enough now. (see earlier size comparison.)
Also liking the idea of making it a junka rather than just a trukk, more fire power. But in truth I have an idea in my head of grots hanging on top of the uprights firing big shootas.
Thank you. Of course please see pics below. Trying for a WW1 Browning look but going for twin linked. WIP, box in middle for ammo, thinking of having a grot firing it.
@ rahxephon
Thank you. Built it my self from 2mm styrene sheet. Heated it with a candle to curve it. Made from 2 parts stuck together.
@ Bigfish
Thank you. I tend to do a basic paint job until its complete then touch up and wash up as necessary. Though I am well below the standards you guys set. I am hoping to start learning more technical painting. Many of you are inspiring me to try a lot harder.
Ok life isn't fair. Not getting enough time for this. Here are some updates.
@ Arakasi Thank you
Automatically Appended Next Post: OK so its definately a junker now, although all the added bits can be removed and revert to a trukk with just the rokkit launcher.
wow, this is becoming more awesome by the day, lik the grots operating the big shooters and the whole removable bit thing. the flags look ace and the front bumper looks pretty sweet too. keep up the good work.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And dont put your slef down painting wise, that flag and the teeth on the front are really nicely done
update ok really got to get this finished now. Still work to do.
I need some advice, I want to make the front tyres look dirty but not really done it before. Our home theme as it were is a desert world. So I dont want muddy, I want dusty.
Oi! You dere! Yeh, you. Da ork wiv all da tools for da makin' an fixin' an stuff. Yer doin' a gud job 'o makin' new toyz for the boyz. Keep it up, da WAAAAAAGH! needs more boyz like you.
looks great, as to the whole weathering of the wheels i coul'nt help you. but im sure someone sells a weathering power or someone else has found a way to do it so just scour the internet a bit.
Ok so been a bit distracted. (see pics) But now thinking of entering a comp. on Dakka about terrain containing vehicles. So I think that is going to be my next little project for here.
So I guess this thread is going to be open to distractions, as I have a few of you watching here, I may as well get your opinions of some of my other work.
First up a remodel of my sons chaos. He had some raptors that needed to be repainted to bring in line with a change in colour scheme, and also I have been dying to fix the jump packs on these guys, and make them legally armed. This is his main army for his local club meetings so it needs to be legal.
You can tell my heart is not 100% in this, taking soo long.
OK here you go, my take on a butcher cannon, and a pic as is so far.
Please give me some feed back, ideas how to proceed. He is definately getting a siege claw, thinking of a mask on face. And heavy blast shoulder pads coming down over sides/front. Thoughts please.
So this Decimator Daemon Engine is taking up far too much of my time.
Need some help here.
1) What about ammo feed to butcher cannon.
2) Chaos symbols. My sons army is lead by Abaddon, and I am gradually making them all units that have turned to him, the symbols I have kinda formed on the Decimator at the moment I think lean him toward Khorne. But I dont understand the chaos symbols. I can just about work out the markers and standards, I have the older codex for reference,, but I am struggling to find out if I am mixing up Khorne and tzeentch and nurgle symbolisation. His army has Thousand sons, plague marines, normal CSM, Raptors
Going to end up dropping this in bucket in a bit and moving on to Warkopta.
Here are some upto date pic's please give me some critical thoughts, to inspire me.
I have entered another competition. This one is themed "Brotherhood". So I am taking the opportuiniity to start my ork bike boys. "Da Broverhood of Dakka"
So here are some early pics, engine block assemblies. At least for the boys they will do and a rough mock up of what I am looking at.
These guys are still wip. Somehow want to add 3 more to the line up. I only need these three to enter a competition but I would like to have the six finished for the end of the comp.
I am trying to make it look like they have denim waistcoats on, biker style. Got to do a bit more to the logo etc. And need to add more details to the bikes. Planning a gun mount on the handlebars for each and a shield mounted to the left of each rider like Zog has. Also tried to paint heat effect on the gun barrels and exhaust, not sure if its working.
Thanks for looking and please leave a comment, good or bad,
I am afraid they are huge. Got a bit carried away. I will try and put up some size comparison shots. The guys on board are nobz. For my army they are a perfect fit, but I feel they would be illegal for actual gaming.
The way I figure it is they are meant to be warbikes, Not your run of the mill hog for cruising. Huge thumping machines designed to carry a huge ork and the biggest gun he could get hold of, and his grot orderlies and his second gun and his other backup gun and his shield, and his pet squig, and be able to ram through a line of punny spacemarines, and keep going off into the sunset.
I know I am probably wrong mind you.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok had a think over night. I need to remodel these. They are far too tall. Not overly worried about the footprint of the model. The forgeworld nobz bike and many I have seen on here are extended front ends. The guns are ok, they are meant to be huge, they are dakka kannons after all.
My main issue is the guys are stood up on top, got to integrate them more into the model. Which means rethinking the forks and handlebars.
The bikes are awesome and the crashed Deffkopta just looks brilliant.
I've just read through your thread and the marine being strafed by the DeffKopta is definitely being nicked for my Dakkajet base (if you don't mind).
Keep it up, I have abandoned my orks for a month whilst building a Daemon army but now you've inspired me to go back and get them finished.....well as much as a 40K army is ever finished.
Thank you.
@ Arakasi, Thanks yes I am happy. They still seem big but orkz is big. Hope I am forgiven for scale fubar.
@ nwns. Thank you, I am flattered, and please go for it, can't wait to see your version.
@ Selvaggio Saky. Thank you.
Ok now a little update, decided to try and nearly complete the one bike, to make sure its right. Still got a bit of touching up to do but this is basically end result, so please comment and let me know your thoughts.
Man Camherkhi sorry i havent been around! love the big mak. The rebuild went well for you in my opinion. Really made the bikes much more realistic. The drivers and weapons are fantastic. Zog however, has a minigun in the way of him chopping stuff... He must hold his axe to effect and just run them over. Great work! your scratches are inspiring.
so definatly subbed to this thread... didn´t knew you were the du´de with those orky bikes from the comp!... and i see here evenn more WIP of the cool looking choasy knight!...awesome...
and ork bikes can´t be too big... if they are bigger...they can carry more dakka... and if they can carry dakka.... well there is never enough of that ...see? i rest my case^^
So here's an update. Actually done a bit more than the pics suggest, but trying to concentrate on working and not loitering on Dakka looking at all the cool work.
This is Zog just about there, just a couple washes and some tidying up to do. Only bit I am not happy with is the dirt on the wheels. Not sure what to do!!
Couple days and should have a all three to this stage at least.
well i say, looks cool! and the rear wheel i think is perfect... the inner parts of the front wheel could get muddier for my taste...other than that... awesome progress!
Zogs alterations did him justice! he can indeed swing now. THe mud is top notch. Some people think less is more, i am a fan of a middle ground. Great paint! well done work.
Nice work on him. about the mud on the wheels then.
honestly, i don't think it looks that good with the mud on there at all.. considering he's driving in dry sand it wouldn't build up like that.
it would have been a totaly different thing if the sand was wet thouh ofc.
so here's what i think. eigther you remove the sand on the wheels and just drybrush the wheels as they are and that will make it looks like he's driving in sand.
or you could just repaint the sand darker to make it look more like wet sand.
I am truly honoured and grateful for your praise, thank you.
So here are the final shots. These will be linked in to the competition.
Next up I am not sure, I also through my hat in on the terrain comp, but my materials have yet to arrive, so maybe made dash on that. Or I am itching to do a Warkopta, got ideas and I see that Wazzoo2000 recently did one, which is too awesome for words so it's itching the back of my skull at the moment.
Anyways, here are the pics, trying my best to get good pictures. May have to try again later when the light is better please let me know what you think.
and you need a better backdrop for such pics mate! you´re short selling your stuff that way!
also... as a personal request... would you be able to point me in the right direction as to where I could see some WIP pics of that grotz display base? I am gathering my own forces for a grotz army as we speak... and I would love to give them the right attention...if you catch my drift
Thank you. And yup just got a new camera, and everything but need to sort out a nice backdrop.
I have to make up another soon, so will do my best at a tut.
It is basically, a old cd, cut a bit of polystyrene to size. I did it more as a movement tray than a display base. Although it does group them nicely for a ordinance template. 8(
So see if you can follow these. Totally not wishing to teach anyone to suck egg's here guys. I use this as a movement tray for Grot squads.
You will need:
1) Polystyrene from a pizza package. If you can get them. Its about 3-4 mm thick.
2) Old CD.
3) Contact adhesive.
4) Marker pen, and very sharp knife, and small something to spread glue out.
oh...I didn´t expect that... aha... so soft foam something...now that explains the nice round circles for the bases... I didn´t see that coming...hmmm...I use insulation foam for floor boarding... same stuff really... here we get pizza´s only with cardboard^^... but what exactly is that inpact glue? some kind of superglue?... but regardless...that was most helpful mate... I will use that sooner than we all would think...got me recently yet again another squad of grotz...^^...cunning plans ahead^^
@ Vik. The adhesive is a contact adhesive. Its really rubbery, you put it on both surfaces wait for it to dry a bit then put together. The only down sides are 1) you have to be very careful putting it together because once it touches it will never come off, so NO realignment. 2) It has some fairly nasty fumes, so always use in a well ventilated area and it melts polystyrene. Not badly but enough. The good is it is a very strong bond on any 2 surfaces that are relatively non-porous. In the trade it is used to stick laminate to worktops for kitchens etc.
So been busy trying to sort various projects, and also decided to expand my work space.
So some pics of the shrine I am working on, not very orky yet, but give it chance. And then a before and after of workspace. Been moved out of my little corner, got me a nice little shed. Been feeling a bit envious of others on Dakka upgrading, so made the choice to do something about it.
Loving the new workspace, nothing better than a proper quiet place to do what You love to do.
Have to say that I'm lucky enough to have a room as well just for my hobbies.
Not a bad effort by so young a painter, imagine when he is painting minis at say 13, or 18, or when he hits his twenties? by then he will be likely painting at award levels!
My very first DnD minis were so simply painted, flesh with no highlights/dry brushing/washes, clothes were the same, one color only, no layers, not dry brush, nada! then I I learned that minis could look more serious, less cartoony.
What I am saying is, encourage the lad! let him do more and learn more ! help him develop his techniques so that one day, he too will be posting pics on Dakka as well as his "Old Man"
I did the same with that model for a kid I know... we used a way simpler scheme... he is painted only drybrushed silver over black... but your son can paint very well already!
your new workplace looks very cozy... having everything at arms length is really the way to go
The sands blew past obscuring vision and biting into every exposed part of his flesh. This bloody planet was a waste land. Colonised thousands of years ago, but then lost in time. Continued attempts to recolonize had failed again and again. But each attempt had left its scars on the surface of this planet. Each attempt had brought new life to this planet.
Now here was Commander MacTappass leading yet another attempt by the Imperium to take this planet back. He knew that Tyranids had been here, and failed to truly conquer. He knew that ancient relics could be found to show that the Eldar had once tried. He knew that a human population, the remains of the Catachan that had last been sent here, was here and surviving somehow 400 years after it came with the Dark Angel chapter contingent to wipe out the other most successful inhabitants. The cursed green skin devils. He was here now because yet again another Waagh was brewing. Three times massive hordes of the green tide had spawned from this planet and decimated this sector. This was the only reason he could fathom for the Imperium’s interest in such a desolate place. To wipe them out once and for all, those were his orders. With the Cadian Guard and the Ultra Marines at his back he must be able to defeat such a low brow bunch of heathen scum.
Yet here on Siccus Prime he was fighting for his life every single day. The Leader of the horde, one Thunderfarter da Turd, was a very cunning adversary. The orks had adapted to the conditions on this planet very well, they seemed to thrive here. They had adapted and tamed the beasts of the desert. They had developed a nomadic life style. They had even befriended the survivors of the original colonists, to the extent that he had to take action against a village, killing all the human inhabitants as well as the orks. The humans where almost worshiping the orks, they even had a statue praising them. He had to admit that he could see their point. He admired his enemy, and respected him.
He once more tried to scan the horizon for any sign of trouble, and once more got a face full of sand……..
The sands blew past obscuring vision and biting into every exposed part of his flesh.
you captured that description very well in your dio mister!... it was the exact feeling i had when seeing the fist pic of the floor covered with sand... you really gace that windy feeling here... sand blown everywhere!...remarkably!
also... how did you get that sarcophagus done? was it ready made? people demand to know^^
@ Viktor........Thank you. The sarcophagus is my own creation from styrene sheet a head and two shoulder pads along with a pair of arms off a heavy bolter crew, and some green stuff. I will attempt a tutorial but my skills are limited on such things. I keep forgetting to take pics, just run headlong through a build as creativity grabs me.
Here are some more pics of it if they help to see what is going on.
i see... wonderful... the greenstuff working as a robe put everything together.... very cool!... i tried to figure out if you just had a SM body cut in half... but that would have been way too difficult to get straight... so i gather you had it sunken in two to three layers of sheat styrene then and then covered the possible gaps with GS? i think i will copy that eventually...and now that you mentioned the arms... you now i see that too clever!... i really love our comps.... there is so much originality to be seen and so much to be learned from each other
I love the comps too, they have made me up my game at every step. Still got long way to go to get anywhere near where I want to be. But the ideas and inspirational work done by everyone pushes you forward.
Thank you for the comments and I am glad you can see what I did. Hope it helps.
The idea is that it's a shrine constructed by the human settlers rather than an Imperial structure. Made to mark the hero that saved them, type of thing. I am hoping to have a lectern with a book, Possibly a glass case with his sword in it!!. And stained glass windows. Lots to do. Not enough time.
Some pics, pretty much self explanatory, second coat of sand and added some more broken plaster, tried to take the "squareness" off the end wall, Then some windows, these are still WIP.
NerdFest on here has a tutorial on how to paint pretty realistic marble effect and its pretty easy to pull off apparently. You should check out his blog. Love the stained glass you made, thats pretty slick
Thank you guys. Nice to know I am getting some attention.
The stain glass is a frame of styrene box section sandwiching a piece of laminate pouch ( which was run through the laminator without anything in it. Very cheap form of clear sheet material.) I then painted my outlines in black paint, letting it build up a bit for effect. Then I used my old citadel inks and I also use "Daler Calli" calligraphy inks which give really rich full colour. Allow all to dry then carefully went over the black with runefang steel to try and make it look like lead. The frames can be anything you like from wooden to steel, to rust metal like mine. Trying for a tarnished brass come titanium feel. Not 100% at the mo.
Hope that helps, and please keep the comments coming.
So now for a wee update.
As I said working on window frames, Thoughts and hints helpful.
Interior walls.
And relic sword for display in shrine.
Thank you for looking and please leave comments, criticism and helpful hints, they are always welcome.
I need to injure myself more often. (twisted ankle playing football (soccer) with the kids.) more pics of where I am at. The windows are not glued in yet. Some detailing to do around before slip them in permanently.
I found tin bts, then dry brushed first in dwarven bronze and a final dry drush and highlight of shinig or burnished gold with a chestnut ink wash seems to do the trick, but for brass/bronze to look tarnished, I used some dry brush/stipling of rotten flesh with Thrakka wash for a patina effect
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and stay off the ankle when you can, prop it up and all that.
that sword...did you cast that yourself? it looks clear resin to me? and also very good looking with a bit of a katana vibe to it...
the dio is developing really fine!... the windows... thanks for the how to on these...that something i need t try for sure... i love these windows! and don´t use that term too liberally!!!
also in your earlier update there is one pic not really working for me...??? about the interior walls...
oh...and i hope you get better soon... a sprained ankle is nothing hilarious at any point... one feels really dependant on other peeps then as hopping around doesn´t solve anything rather puts the good feet under even more stress.... which very well could lead to other illnesses on the good one...so... take rest... cool as you see fit and regain your limbs to the amount of strength as they have been before!!!
@ SelvaggioSaky. Thank you sir, and you are welcome. I am honoured to be able to advise any of you.
@ shasolenzabi. Thank you. going to try this. Kinda have tried it a bit. I got a "chestnut" Metalic that I have put over the metal work. Look see what you think in upcoming update. I am not 100% if it's exactly what I want. I have a vision in my head, but its not quite there in reality. Your advise is most welcome, and I will try a few test pieces to see if they get me there.
@ cormadepanda. Thank you sir.
@ Ruglud. Thank you, now get on with it, especially as you did this to me.
@ Viktor von Domm. Thank you. The sword started as a small length of acrylic rod, I "dremeled" it down to that state. Hoping to make it "glow". Please see update and let me know if walls are better. Please expand. What's not working? Do you not like the colour?
Please keep up the critique and the comments. Update coming up.
OK try again. ( Tried twice to upload this and failed)
Small update.
And Question.
Green? Do it add moss and vines, or leave as desert, maybe some dead twigs?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Bit more fluff, just for fun.....
Spoiler:
Thunderfarter Da Turd looked down at this latest victim. So the Hummies wuz back den!
His Waagh! was growing. Now hundreds of thousands strong, across the planet. His Mechs had started work on the ships to take them off world, and spread across the galaxy. The war machines where being built in their hundreds now. Snaggerz new-fangled factory was working flat out making bikes and koptas. Un-natural orkz flying, but many of the boys liked it, he suspected because they got to the fight quicker, little buggers.
Why wuz the Hummies back again? They wuz not clever enuff to find the true resources of this planet! Been here before and never found nuffin!
Got enuff to deal with those bloody bugs in the south, and those bloody blue skins to the north. Why the hell the blue skins was here at all was a mystery. They struggled bad with no water about. Maybe they found the northern wells? Better investigate that. Now the Hummies wuz ere they would attract all the rest. Probably have dem dare spiky Hummies soon too. Mind you I like the spiky ones, they got funny friends who give you a descent fight at least.
Oh well better go wake da boyz up, fightin to be had today, maybe he would try dis flying malarkey, get in there among da ladz again.
The giant ork warlord glanced once more at the Ultramarine scouting party below looking at the shrine. The grey haired one looked tough, like he may put up a bit of a fight. At least there where some in tins this time, they last longer than the small ones. But the small ones had toy’s for Snaggerz.
He turned and stroud back down the hill towards the camp. He looked at the group ahead. Maybe he should not wake them. He could go have some fun before breakfast. There was only a dozen hummies over there and the two hundred ladz here, would not have enough to go round!
“Nah. Da boyz gets feisty if I don’t let dem fight.”
“WAKEY WAKEY, RISE AND SHINE YOU MANGY DOGS, WE GOT SOME SPORT BEFORE BREAKFAST……..”
So some pics, really getting there now few things to sort out, but nearly happy with it.
One question do I put a ruined roof on it? Possible ideas please, or do I leave it the hell alone.
Oh and then some very rubbish pictures of my next little unit. Bear in mind I do not really bother with legal units, so got an idea I toyed with for the brotherhood comp, but dropped in favour of the bikes. Ork meets assassins creed/arab, nob/commando/sniper unit. They will never see a battle probably, but I just love the idea, especially since I am on a desert planet.
i think it is as best as can be... a roof would over do it... the sword glassdome looks perfect... and the tome casket too... this whole scene sure gives you a giant leap for winning the comp... from what i´ve seen you sure atm rule the comp mister!
Ah yes, nice chopper, the cobra.
Anyway, that looks like it's heading more towards a UH1 shape?
I would approve of this.
Then again, I would approve if it was going to be cobra shaped...
Is it going to be more of an attack heli (like the cobra) or transport heli (like the huey)?
Cool. I made a Huey "Heavy Hog" model years ago that had a grenade launcher mounted in a turret thing on the nose with one of those shark grins on it. That could work for orks...
Whatever you do for a tail, make sure it's longer than those main blades, they're quite long.
Dude, your work is awesome as ever. I love the shrine, simply beautiful and so atmospheric. Brilliant idea with the clear plastic display case on the relic sword and also the plastic cover gfor the ancient book... As for the chopper, great work thus far, really like the way you're combining different models...
Oh! It's *not* a Trukk bed, and it's the top, not the bottom As you were (though if I ever loot this, I'll probably try it the way I initially thought you were going...). What is that piece you have used for the top anyway?
Thank you guys. Your feedback is very important to me.
Ok on the end of a 16 hour day here so please forgive me any silly mistakes.
@ Arakasi, hope this helps. Reason I changed it from the bed of the back to the top was size. Its not quite big enough for what I have in mind. But it did fit perfectly as a roof.
Ok been stupid busy IRL. Now working on 3 current projects, but did manage to put some skids on Warkopta.
Also started my entry for next comp. Tanks. Well here goes.
When the rumours started that the next round would be a transport for your current Brotherhood Comp. unit. I paniced. My entry was a biker gang. So got to thinking. I can do a transport for them, because good old Irvine the Mekboy, was bound to have a mobile workshop, to refuel and service da bikes and koptas. And boom an idea was born. So here we go.
As per usual please give me all the feed back you can, good or bad.
that tank concept... I am eager to see more development on this one... it is quite a big thing and I like tanks with a bit of a room to stretch out yon feet
Well gentlefolks, here is a small update, a scale pic for you and a question.....
The thinking behind this thing, is as I have said a mekboys mobile workshop. But its orkz in it, so its going to have guns. And grot crew. So I guess in game it would count as a battlewagon maybe, plenty of transport room for boys, and a few guns? To be honest I just make the models I never game anyway so it will never see a battlefield.
Anyways here's the pics.
Helipad in elevated position.
Helipad in lowered (battle) position.
Scale shot!!
Ok it's quite big
And where to put the fuel tank?
Here...
Or here...
If it's at the back I can run a "hose" to the helipad, and pipes to engines, Did think about putting it on a framework, bit like a water tower, be kinda typically orky really, but not sure. Anyway, what do you guys think on positioning of fuel tank?
HAHA! Awesome helipad and i prefer the fueltank on the back looks much more orky and you get alot more room for troops in there.
i don't think you'll be able to play it as a battlewagon though.. that thing is just HUGE!! i mean i thought it was big before. but now with that scaleshot.. wow..
Place fuel tank on the second location and some kind of combustion engine in the first spot. A big one! Dont forget turrets Perhaps mount one to the under side of the heli pad?! that be pretty kick'in. Oh! haha good joke, move pad during landing.
EDIT: Also at the second location give it some support beams and stuff, make it look stuck to the frame rather than silly sitting there.
Great progress cam, I think the tank on back is the way to go. As for weapons...obviously flame weapons with hoses from the fuel tank. When copters land to refuel they then see an all out of fuel sign because he fuels been used for attack/defense, and cooking food. The copter then can be dumped unceremoniously over the side till the next copter lands. Each time the ork deck crew takes out the little remaining fuel in the tanks and another heave-ho the tank never runs dry.
Really need to get a move on, or will not be done in time for comp. I have to finish a week early as I am holiday from the 8th til the due date. So sorry for lack of pics here but got to get on with it and not be distracted by all the amazing work you guys are doing across dakka dakka.
Here are some pics..more in gallery.
Fuel tank in place. Hope the gantry work is ok.
Pic of dry fit on helipad etc.
Burna emplacement at front. Another of these on other side in progress as we speak.
Feedback please. See you soon, because if I am not finished by tomorrow evening there is little hope I will finish in time.
Love everything about It, from the concept to the execution, details are awesome and the driver looks like a crane operator and that's exactly as I was envisioning It...
@Vik, I will be adding some damage in general soon.
Ok guy's sorry for slow updates, first was busy building then was work now am a bit sick, just in time for going on holiday next week. Anyways....
Couple pics. More to come, I am trying not to put too many pictures up. I have put a few more in my gallery.
Every Mekboy's Mobile Workshop (MMW) needs a KFF Generator, but wait, if it's only got a 6" zone and the vehicle is way bigger!!! Ah a huge generator with pillion's around the vehicle to spread the powerfield. Yes that will work. Ok first up Huge Kustom Force Field Generator.
In construction, so you may see how it was made....ish.
Primed and resting in place so you can see roughly what we are looking at.
Hope you like will update again later tonight, I got maybe 48 hours to finish this or it will not be done for comp, so here goes nothing.
that underside thingy looks non GW? what is it from?
and i am a sucker for tesla coils... these ooze so much coolness! and even added cogs! oh... and while we are at it... that orange part... where is that from?
@ Vik Thank you sir. The bottom grey bit is a piece from "megablocks", no idea what from, kids leftovers. The orange is a piece from a broken gun, again kids leftovers. The central shaft is the centre from a till roll from work. The rest is pc, oh the cog is from a farm toy, and the balls are plastic bb pellets.
@ SelvaggioSaky Thank you.
So here we are it is gone midnight and I have to go to bed, because I am just not well, but here are some pictures of where I am at. The clever ones will notice, I still have a fair bit of work to do, and I have not even started on the crew.....
Nice, really like how stylised your models are. They're cartoony but really cool at the same time. Liking the whole idea of this build, keep up the good work
thanks cam for the helping with the used bitz... my kids are eager to suply me with needed bitz of old and crushed toys too... and tomorrow we will be hunting at a local fleamarket again... lots of happy meal toys and so on to be seen there^^...always a winning event there^^
and the chain that links the KFF coils is a genius idea! the lighting on the coils looks very cool... one thing i would like to suggest... if you are able to... add some energy flickers with GS or LGS to the chains... rather simple work but will support the big KFF effect in a tremendous way!
and the "Rab da Rivet".... are the first three pics the same model just different pics of the WIP??? wow... didn´t knew you could sculpt so well!
the head choice looks like he is sipping on a can of beer
the arm with the servo fist looks very cool... more shots bplease... and well the other arm seems to be selfmade too....??? wow... those muscles look really convincing...
the only issue i have is with the ratio of legs to chest... but i am sure that is related to the fluffy bit of his origin you already posted...
@ Vik, thank you. The legs are from a nob, the head is from a mekboy from the lootas box I think, The braces are from the burnas. The rest is all me. Mostly GS (or similar product). And pc stuff. Never modelled a whole thing like this before. First time.
Ok here is where I am at with ...................my gods I don't have a name ............Help!!!!
Ok here are some pics.
More to come on Rab da Rivet, just finishing painting.......
Well that's me, to tired to be sensible now so off to bed. Totally not sure if I will get any time to do any more before comp, Still a bit WIP.
Talking of whips. I may remove the whip from the driver, not sure.
Ok so here is Rab da Rivet.
He is unlucky in that he is always getting something stuck in the machinery. Couple fingers here, whole hand there, who's counting right....But he's a survivor. Thus he is huge and strong, and although he is not too bright, he is brilliant at keeping things going. That's why he has a mobile workshop. Da Warboss is very happy because Rab see's no problem with refuelling the bikes and kopta's on the front line with bullets whizzing past. Soon he will have some big guns to shut them up anyways....
An accident with a rivet gun left his legs slightly stunted, thusly the name Rab da Rivet, "He got da Rivet right up his............"
Nuff said. Anyways, here are some pics, I think I would like to do a bit more paintwork to him, so count him as PIP.
holy gak!... and seeing the spilled green (?) fuel on the deck indeed^^
that "kopta kaptcha" looks brilliant... all that fine detail... so many cool ideas! that all together tell a huge tale!... it is a dio all for itself!
that "K" on the helipad took me a second to comprehend... and then... of course... orks call them "koptas" d´oh...^^
rab da rivet looks cool... the hole mini is a nighmare for any punny humans...the only thing i am not that sold is the hue of the skin... he looks a bit too yellow in places? i would have expected a darker look on him... when orks get older they get biger and darker right?
@ Vik Thank you again. And yes you are correct. I am hopefully getting a chance today to correct the issue. I did not like the colour last night, but was too tired to do anything about it. Already put a wash of dark green on this morning.
The kopta was an earlier build, in fact it has a special place for me, as it was just after finding Dakka Dakka and Arakasi and his orks. I was just getting back into Modelling , at the time my kids all wanted armies and I was a painting freak for them, but not a good one, Then I saw Arakasi's Blog and here we are in less than a year I think. So blame him. Of course I then found you guys gradually and am still finding blogs that amaze and dazzle. And most importantly I suppose INSPIRE me to try harder.
Sorry for soppy moment. Guest just want to say THANK YOU.
that is where dakka does the most "harm" to me... all that very inspirational stuff around here just sidetracks me from sidetracking me while i sidetrack my already sidetracked stuff...^^
and no need to thank you... your work... see above is hard currency^^... i intend to steal happily soon enough from your ideas
@ Vik And I know what you mean, cant drag myself away from Dakka sometimes.
Ok Rabz Mobile Mekshop is ready for competition, not finished yet, got some ideas to be added, but go for comp. I would like more time but hey that's life.
So here we go..........................
ERE YOU, What you you want!!!!
Yeah you..............
Come ere you.....!
Pic heavy from here.....
Well that's it, for now, off on holiday for a week tomorrow. Going to post this thing up on Comp page. Thank you guys for your input and support long may it continue...
Well that's it, for now, off on holiday for a week tomorrow. Going to post this thing up on Comp page. Thank you guys for your input and support long may it continue...
well... you will feel sooner than you want the after effects of leaving us all alone... cold dakka turkey...
this year we skipped summer holidays and spent the summer at home... while this saves a lot of money it also makes me able to be in the evening/nights here on dakka... only my wife complains...as she likes to go out into the wild and so on
the mekshop looks amazing... as i have often already said, so many lovley looking details everywhere... i wouldn´t consider it finshed so long you still have more ideas for that hulk...but indeed... it is more than ready for the comp... a true worthy entry!
and your rab looks now more mature ... and also i note that you put him on a custom made "base"... i have done so too... specially if he is built to stay in the mek shop and wont get out this is a better looking way to have him not falling over all the time... a real base would elevate him way too much and you made the base stylish too^^
by the way... the hook pic reminds me of old horror movies
I know what you mean Vik about the hook pic. I manage somehow to sometimes catch an atmospheric picture of my models.
Sorry no pics at the mo, just back home. I will be working away very soon, and will be posting pics. I think the workshop needs more guns. And crew. Not sure but had an idea of netting going around the koptapad!
Your thoughts on these and any you would like me to look at are more than welcome.
I will be working on the Warkopta too very soon, but am holding back a little in anticipation of the next competition being flyers. Don't want to get to far ahead and not be able to use it in comp.
Think I will be working a bit more on my Assassin Nobz. Had some great ideas while on holidays.
I also have a major destraction from the orks coming up as I will be repainting the imperial guard army I have. It was originally collected for my son, and I did not paint allot of it, and that which I did paint was before I found Dakka and got inspired to try that bit harder with every model, so they are a bit below par at the mo. Unfortunately they are a couple hundred models strong, so will take a bit of painting. I think this will be done on a separate blog.
Don't worry I will not be leaving this blog hanging, and will have regular updates.
Thanks for looking and thank you for your continued support, You guys are great.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also I would like to point anyone reading this blog to a blog I found on Dakka.
i like your ideas you stated above, the netting would be a very orky way to create extra storage room and greatly needed as i think a more littered workroom with guns in different stages of disasmbley would be good looking...
as for the thread you linked... had a look... very good looking... will follow this, and...you really have two sons with autism? wow... going on holiday must then be quite a challenge i think as change is really not something that makes chilrden with autism react too positive?... how old are your kids? and when did you realize the status of your kids? if any of my wordings here sound a bit out of place i am sorry... no intention to offend anyone... just curious... i am trying to become a nursery nurse atm and we had quite some livid discussions recently at school and the whole disability- "thing" is due to no relation to the subject still very far from my own expieriences... tho soon i will have to do an internship in an institution for disabled...and i really don´t know if i can cope... you have to be really strong and capable to care for two kids at once mister... i don´t envy you but i have great respect for your family life which wont be an easy one...
My kids are Rhianna (14), Kieran (13) and Cameron (10). Cam-Kie-Rhi.........................I am actually Jeff.
The Autism spectrum is very large and covers many areas. Cameron was diagnosed with Asbergers Syndrome (probably spelt wrong) 3 Years ago, (took 2 years before that of testing for them to come to that conclusion.) He struggles with change and the world is very black and white to him, there are no grey areas. He has severe mood swings and violent tendancies, and struggles with social interaction. Kieran is not quite so bad, but much the same but also has a very obsessive mind and learning difficulties. My life is by no means hard, and there are many out there alot worse off than my family. But it is a challenge, every day, and the holiday was good but difficult.
I am actually on holiday for another week, but at home to settle the kids for the rest of thier summer break.
ok.... i never wanted to be someone to step on toes here
well i have heard of that syndrome due to work ( a kid got that syndrome and also in a more violent direction... tho he was rather a bright and friendly lad but his classmates where kinda cruel towards him... picked on him as they knew he would explode and so on...i had to resign from working there... too much bad stuff happned there...)
also... i like the way you took the names of your kids and made them into your screen name....! that is really nice of you!...
Ok been working on the RMM (Rabz Mobile Mekshop), got some pics, not sure what to do about competition entry as I have already posted an entry and these are modifications. Not all are complete at this moment.
Anyways pics.
Cargo netting storage on heli deck.
Crew
Forward mounted close combat weapon...
As always please comment, let me know your thoughts.
@ DiDDe. Will post a pic of what I have, not really that much, Only about 5 tanks couple sentinels and 80ish guard.
Hey cam, in response to an earlier posts, is spelled Asperger's I show some mildish traits of it, and made it to 49 so far despite it, but then again I just have fairly low levels of the syndrome based on self tests online and other factors, Being aware makes me fight it when the tendencies show up.
hey cam... love the cargo "additions! specially the more open one...I will need to try that on my own...!
as for the comp...ask comrade panda directly... I am sure there is a way around... some projects never truly get over the finishing line... there is always some minor touch-ups and additions
Do not worry, I will not be abandoning this blog, this is my main effort.
@ shasolenzabi. Thank you for sharing. Was trying to remember the spelling off the top of my head, actually got several books and been trying to learn as much as possible. It's such a wide field, it's tough going.
@ Viktor von Domm. Thank you. Feel free as with anything you see here. I do not claim any originality. Often I do things, and after realise I have seen it many months or even years ago. But I think the whole point here is to share and put it out there, let people tell you what they think. Good or bad.
@ DrH. Thank you. My thinking behind the light was it would blind the enemy, more than light the way. I also can imagine it juddering around a lot.
@ cormadepanda. Thank you. yes not sure myself. Going to give it a rest I think just for a minute, look back at it in a bit, with fresh eyes. Got so many ideas for it, cant fit them all in. Actually found some grots I purchased as crew for this a while back in a bits box, too late, crew done. And please come look at my guard, I need all the help there I can get.
Well sorry no pics here tonight, will be soon promise. I am hoping that the next comp is flyers and they will let me use the warkopta, so I can finish that off. If not I will be working on other competitions, there are many on at the mo.
@ shasolenzabi. Thank you for sharing. Was trying to remember the spelling off the top of my head, actually got several books and been trying to learn as much as possible. It's such a wide field, it's tough going.
Ok so, going to do a little run down on how I made the lamp.
So firstly I have to truly apologise, because the tubing I am using is from a bulk batch I got from China, and does not have any coding. I do have some comparison and the measurements of the actual tube I used.
The parts....
That's:
A 6mm BB pellet.(plastic ball) Used for airsoft guns.
Spoiler:
The BB's cost a couple pounds for a couple thousand, and can be used for many different things. I used them for my Kustom Force Field Generator for example.
A piece 10mm long of 6mm dia. Tube. (close equivalent Evergreen styrene no.228)
A piece 8mm long of 7.8mm dia. tube. (close equivalent Evergreen styrene no.230)
A piece 6mm long of 10mm square tube.
2 x rivet heads of your choice.
Small piece copper wire.
You will need:
Superglue/styrene glue.
Hot glue gun.
Sharp knife.
Well really simple here. Glue the 2 tubes together, offset. You want the ball to be behind the front edge of the bigger tube. So about 6.5-7mm.
While that's setting chop up the square tube. Cut out one side. Then you can glue the round tubes between this, Make sure you leave a gap at the bottom. You can add a couple of rivets to act as hinge pins on the outside.
Next drill a hole in the BB to accommodate the copper wire which should be quite long. Put a blob of hot melt glue inside the 6mm tube and inset the wire through until the BB is set into position, fiddle with the glue best you can, it is going to be a pain, but it cleans up nice enough in the end. That's about it really. The wire coming out the back can be trailed off to be put into a box or somewhere else, The wire helps keep it all stuck together.
I think I will take a bit more time in the future. Could green stuff up the back. Could probably actually pivot the light on a rod. The one I put on my Demolisher for my Imperial Guard I magnetized, So I can pivot it or remove it. The one here I stuck to a chainsaw. Going to do a lot more of these. It gives a nice round lens.
I recon you guys can improve on this no end. Hope its helpful. C & C welcome. Please leave a thought.
i think the measurements are not that of big importance here as one can play at home with what they have at hand... bigger lamps or even smaller ones are thus also doable...
what matters is that you solved quite some big issues here mate!
i will fondly remember this in the fullnes of time!
That's Brilliant! You've perfected the light technique by slicing the BBs in half! Now I need to catch up on your blog, thanks for pointing me to this and the comp!
i love the barrel on the tail... that is a most hilarious and orky thing to do!!!
that light thingy you did... i was totally liking it without the mesh... you have to do that again and then without any mesh over the lights... your lese effect was very good!!!! after the mesh that good looking detail was gone :(
one question mister...how did you got the tail to look so orky? what was that material you used on there (the black plasticcrard???)
2nd......Vik has been in touch and I am now very proud to fly the League Banner. I hope only to live up to your standards gentlemen.
3rd....."Uwee" Pictures..... this lot speak for them selves, here is where I am as of this moment.
She is still very WIP, got to add guns and grot crew, got a lot of finishing to do on the paintwork. Please leave your thoughts and suggestions. Thank you all so much for looking.
I work away with a file. Sometimes a needle file, but I have a 3 sided file that was once used to sharpen saw blades. You never use them these days, all modern saws, you do not sharpen. It's a little coarser than needle files.
ah... a three sided file... i have that too... i used yesterday a metal drill bit and just bumped and bumped on the surface with the middle part of the drill... it brought quite a nice random scratching design... and that fairly easy and quick...
So needed to add the gunners, Still very WIP, but decided I needed nice big guns. Found a couple heavy bolters, I acquired in some batch lot from somewhere. Scrapped some of the paint off.
Only trouble is barrels not long enough.....
That's better, now a mount that looks like it pivots.....
And heavy pivoting arms to allow articulation.
Need two of them plus gunners.
Lets dry run in position then.
Thanks for looking and please leave a comment or thoughts.
Man this blog has come a long way. Very impressive for sure. Also I don't know if I've ever seen someone use a landspeeder quite like that before, I'll have to add it to my memory banks, as I have one storm I wanted to convert into a bomma. That just might be the ticket.
the way you rebuilt that dakka it looks as if those bolters where meant to be used in that way!!!... amazing work!
the bigger barrels make this weapon look way more business like than the original... very well done...and you again made an awesome tut for this...one i intend to follow in the fullness of time!
@ Vik. Hoping to make it look like they are glowing red hot. So started with yellow and will ink it redder and redder I hope. May yet just paint them metallic. Will wait and see.
