Wake up Childe...get that old notion of "birthright" out of your head, it's all bullgak. There are no nobles or highborns, there never were, they just MADE it that way. You MAKE life whatever you want it to be bro!

To 1/4" PVC foam!

I had to changeup the angles on the real thing

Automatically Appended Next Post:
..You'll notice I also changed the base to be longer than a single floor tile..I hope that extra 1/16" will add that extra-tough, built to last 40k feel.

Talent is something I'm lacking for Architecture Dave

and LDD, wealth and status aren't something you can choose in birth, but they are something you can change now

yeah I noticed the extended parts on the buttress, wondered where you were going with that, but I've learn't to simply sit back and watch these days with you and scenery

You just need to know what angle to hold the pencil against the straightedge Childe

I worked as a CAD ( Microstation) drafter for a year in-between jobs..it was the most boring job I have ever had.

..Also it helps if you can never find a damn eraser, so you can't erase, which forces you to draw the line right the first time

CAD is dull no matter what, so I feel for you on that one...

haha, thats why I do illustrations in ink... you can't change it, so its start over or do it right in the first place

Childe..>My favorite things are my Prismacolor markers!! I love painting with them, but I can't draw 3D worth a damn, everything gets flat..It's different than a mini for sure!

...gah..That pic sucked...here it is with flash (I hate having to use flash- they need to invent a daylight flash for cameras!)

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/06/27 21:58:15

Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde

Never used Prismacolour markers, in general I avoid markers... I know some people who use copic markers, and because they limit the user I avoid them. I find that most people who use them tend to be limited in ability (I did say most, but not always the case, so please don't take offence as none was meant.). I do love your use of colour though dude, tis rather epic in its tonal qualities and overall pose.

..Mind you I transposed the drawing from a pic in the Art of Warhammer 40,000 book I think, not traced, but visually copied..

I find them easier than brushes, all the colors are transparent alcohol inks..

Thats how I started drawing, copying is the perfect way to gain technical skills. For perspective take life classes if your serious about doing it for more than a passing interest, I can't recommend it enough, I did it at college before uni and it was just pure awesome... except the guy who fell asleep and scratched his doodah while sleeping a mental image that will never go away... what has been seen, cannot be unseen.

Post by: dsteingass

I'd spend more time practicing...but I usually have an x-acto in my hand on my free time

I have done a few perspective studies...they ended up being like most of my projects, in the "I'll finish it later" pile in the corner of my brainpan, uncer a cobweb.

Diffusers kind of do if your using an SLR, but not knowing what camera you use I cant help lols

markers tend to limit by not allowing you to texture or make "marks" as you work. texturing an image is partly what makes an image and without it some images just seem to be flat. Sometimes it helps to crosshatch, line shade or even dot shade. hope that makes sense... I teach by showing rather than saying, art is such a visual thing in teaching and learning that I always feel im not representing what I mean properly lols...

either that or I feel a tool

OH MY GAWD Dave your correct, I have a crap load of Prismamarkers and they are the gak, they are fun to use.. although I alternate between plain old pencil sketches, to macropen drawings, and prisma-markers/pencils

i traced some comics when i was a schoolboy... i even lent a big overhead machine to make me a giant cap america and a spidey for my own room back then^^ slef made posters... i shudder at the thought i used feltpens for the colors^^

the brickwork looks nice... tho i had thought you made your won bricks

the corners tho need still some work... but the design is solid! will you add tiles to the flat surfaces? like in your sketch?

They are not making metal anymore...so either they are dropping them, or redoing them in finecast, or redesigning them. They are too popular to drop, And the sculpts are a bit dated IMHO- I bet they reboot them, give them plastics etc.

Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde

I love the metals tbh... at least they are shorter than SM's... so probably the only thing that has a sense of scale compared to the other ranges... plus, early 2000's when Witch hunters came out they had an influx of additional models done which weren't too bad imo... but anyways not to everyones tastes lols

and poop... that'll herald a price hike on ebay then, as thats where I'm tracking all mine down from... largely because I can get them dirt cheap there... fracking gak

the buttress is looking very cool! at first i was unable to understand the upper section but then you let it stand upright i see that it is the crown of the piece!!! very good indeed... by the way... if you follow that line of design i suggest you making some nice gothic looking chimneys... really it would be only a small redesign...

My musings?...
Well, at GenCon, I am taking 3 back-to-back classes/workshops given by Hirst Arts, I am particularly interested in the way their interlocking architectural parts work. I started these tiles with a standard set of dimensions at Galorn's commission, so he could freely sell his creations without relying on Hirst licensing and such. The more I can learn about their system, the better I can design my own, not necessarily to enter a competetive market with Hirst, but to get the know-how to create my own dream construction set of bitz and panels. To be able to build what my mind can imagine gives me the greatest feeling of satisfaction in life..It really does. It motivates me, that is why I am here on Dakka, sharing this process with like-minded riveters and other artisans. If I build the stuff that I want, chances are pretty high that other people will want them as well.

There is enough talent around here though, that I think we could get someone to make a master .Someone to make a mold...someone to cast..e.t.c..etc

An interesting note for use terrain and fluff people. 6th Edition is REALLY looking to have some serious Battlefield Terrain, be it fortifications or things on the tabletop that allow you to re-roll a resrves roll, or shooting, if you're in control of it. I'm hesitantly excited that a lush terrain table may be 'cool' again.

Well, except for tournament players. Who will hate it all.

I got to bed and drop 2 pages behind? Ha.

I really like your idea of putting the Dakka modeling community together. Someone makes masters, someone makes molds, someone casts, etc. I've made a couple molds of things but they didn't come out well enough to share here. I may give it another go, but for now I'd rather tip my hat to those who are far ahead of me and support their efforts instead.

All I have to do now is get myself together enough where I'll actually be responsible and mail stuff to people (dstein, RSJake, Galorn, Briancj, Hyenajoe... and probably someone else). I have really sucked as a Dakka bud, time to step up and show I'm worthy of trust.

Not sure, but the physical book is at my FLGS and the confirmed I can pick it up tonight after work. They are likely massively violating some GW policy, but whatever... GW is barely hanging on at my FLGS because of Failcast and the GW "have to buy everything at once" policy on ordering the new paint range. They still carry the old stock and buy new plastics, not so much new resin and no new paints.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/06/29 16:35:23

Post by: dsteingass

hmm.. My FLGS got all the new paints (which is why I got them ) -but they haven't recieved any new kits at all. I may have to drive over to the full-retail FLGS to get my book. I passed on the new templates, picked up the Psyker Deck because it is the only way to see what armies get what powers, outside of the issue of WD, which, IMHO, is BS.

The new templates are nice-looking, but far too oversized. Also, I already own, like 18 sets.

The new skull tape measure is just a travesty.

Didn't see any dice packs or those servoskull dice holders.

Can't wait for the mini rulebooks to hit eBay.

Pleased with the direction 6th ed has taken. Final nail in the coffin for ever considering the tournament scene, aside from Adepticon.

yep..rapid fire weapons cannot assault...that means plasmavets are nerfed a bit...right?

meltavets are heavy, they are less effective too right? or am I wrong? the assault rules look fun to me..seems you can do a lot with them, but what can guards assault with?

I just got the templates and cards because that is what they had in the shipment, and I thought the templates design was pretty badass.

ah... power shortage in dave´s land... so that´s why i´m only two pages back of the banter...

sorry to hear your handiwork in the garden of yours got seriously trashed due to that storm...

all that talk of the 6. edition really makes me wonder if i should persuade my wife to let me get this book once while it is still fresh...

oh and nice work of yours... the plane... the big tank...
and i see deadpool, magneto and oron man... up also against ...aragorn, or is it a highlander? lol

felt a bit tried yesterday so i went to bed early... but i wasn´t lazy hobbywise... if you are up to it... look for some scratchbuilt goodies in my thread ... the chopper was cutting like mad^^

cheers, and i hope too you get your power back soon... dakka is not the same without the biggest regular in town^^

Sorry, I hate the way the new templates are set up dave. I have the old ones which are the proper 8" inside that are, but the pics on GW's site showed them "cheating" using that spike tip to add some to the length of the template attack. I say the new templates are 1 overpriced, (Mine were no more then 8bucks, not 20). 2 they look fragile. and 3 seem to foster some cheattiness in my mind with the pics shown. Overpriced everything, they will be lucky if I pay full price for the rules book.

you really move to a hotel? boy that sounds like you are in quite a bad situation... and all your foodstuff is ruined...? when we were on holiday the other week we mistakenly took out the fuses... and our fridge thawed down everything... that was quite the biggest amount of foodstuff i ever had to bring to the waste...

Yeah we are seeing an average of 40or so celsius here and if you lose power, your food will thaw and go bad! and no, he likely will not get any money back or lower rates as America sadly is the birthplace of Corporate Greed on an institutional scale,

Hate to break it to you, Shaso, but it isn't just the corporate greed that is saddening in the States. We've got plenty of regular greed to go around.

Just for a night or two, there is no ETA yet, but my street won't get any work done until the more major parts of town get worked on first.yeah, the meat in the freezer is still frozen, but I don't think it will last long in this 90 degree heat. It'll be a HUGE waste, that is for sure!- Two Briskets in the freezer, will sadly have to be pitched..that makes me almost want to cry.

Actually I won the first TG terrain comp, my reward was setting the second competition parameters. That tradition is still going on there from what I can tell. I think that is a great idea Vik!

No BBQ i am afraid, the weather is so dry, there is a county-wide ban or burning of any kind, fireworks, grills, it's too dry, the grass will catch fire with the slightest spark..hell you can get arrested for getting caught throwing a cigarette butt out the car window. And no party since you can't keep the beer cold, and the liquor store is out of power and closed.

No, it just means that you can use abhumans in your Imperial Forces. I FINALLY got my new White Dwarf and one of the guys converted a beastman as a commander. Same stats as whatever they are, just a lot less rigidness.

No man, we're fed well enough, but thanks! Like I said the entire town is tore up, they have to restore the greater number of customers down, before they will get to our area with the repairs. It was one helluva storm unlike what we usually get around here.

So I brought my Daylight lamp, paint, and figures..I need to get set up here and I'll probably have something to show before too long.

sorry about the power dave, i used to live in a nice old house, large property.. but the power went out alot.. and it took a long lime to put it back on!... at least you have something new to read though and although i've had a peak at the rulebook and know that it mentions the abhumans, what is that second about? Does it have rules or something for them or is it just "you can use them if you want!" type of deal?

As much as I'd like one, Abhumans isnt an army.. most abhumans work for the IG anyway and not all work together, the best we get is some imperial beastmen in the next IG book, if we are lucky

@ dstein- man, sorry to hear about the weather out your way. Glad to see you are ok, and I respect how you are enduring. Once again, your tenacity is an inspiration to modelers everywhere.

Didn't get a game in on Saturday but we went over the rules pretty thoroughly and aside from a few things I wish I'd seen come on board (like using a pistol in CC instead of hitting something w/ a rock) I'm pretty happy w/ the changes. Wound allocation finally makes sense, strict rules for Allies (and penalties for mashing something ridiculous together like SoB and Chaos) and Overwatch are highly welcomed changes for me. Plus they have added Stub guns again, and that can only mean the rumors that Cultists are returning becasue who else would use such horrible weapons? Ha.

I'm looking forward to getting a few "vanilla" games in (meaning my own troops) before getting into allies, etc. I want a firm understanding of move / shoot / CC before getting into the more advanced stuff.

6th Ed is starting out ok so far. Really looking forward to GW fixing the link to the CSM errata PDF, it's broken right now.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/07/02 17:00:14

Post by: dsteingass

Thanks Skalk!- I'm pretty sure that a pistol is still considered an assault/CC weapon.

@ Vik Unfortunately, yes I have to work. We drove past at lunch and the good news is that they now finally have my street blocked off, maybe they will get some work done and get the power back on soon.

Yeah..Page 300 will probably not be anything fancy under the current circumstances.

Terrain Competition??

Sure I'll start (which means I don't get to play this time) but I will be the JUDGE!
I'll keep it simple for the first one..

The first -=]_,=- sponsored terrain competition is...

-=]_,=- Contest #1 -=]_,=-
LIDS!

"You must scratch build some terrain feature utilizing at least one Lid from any type of household container" (probably plastic, but not required to be.)
Rules are as follows:
1. It must be based, and no you cannot use the lid as a base
2. You must provide at least 1 WIP photo, which makes it CLEARLY obvious it is an actual lid you are using, and at least 1 completed photo to be eligible
3. It must be painted
4. The deadline is 1 month from today August 2, 2012

-On August 3rd I will judge the winner, who will be rewarded with some sort of "fabulous" prize from my personal collection, the winner gets to set the parameters (and optional fabulous prize) for the next competition as well as become the judge for the next competition after he/she wins. The Judge does not have to stick to a material like I am, you instead may choose a theme such as "bunkers" or "sandbags" or whatever you wish within reason.
Judges are not eligible to participate in the contest that they are judging...EVER. Judges set their own judging criteria on a per-competition basis. The Judge's decision is FINAL, feel free to bitch about it all you like, but know that it won't make any difference

Since this will be ongoing.>We need to figure out where to create a thread for this in Dakka and this is where we will set all these things

By "pistols in CC" what I meant was instead of hitting your opponent in the head w/ the flat of your Plasma Pistol, stuff the barrel in his guts and blast him open w/ a ST7 hit instead of a ST3 lovetap. I'm also disappointed that Chainswords are still ST of user. It is completely ridiculous that a Guard Sergeant has the EXACT same effectiveness in cc with his bare fist as he would if he hit his opponent with a raging 100,000 RPM adamantium razor teethed chainsaw of absolute eviscerating death.

Terrain competition? Lids? Ok, I'm in. Already have an idea.

Great. Now I want to call my manager and tell him I need the rest of the day off so I can go home and build things for my toy soldiers.

I need help from "The League"!

I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to modify and add/build bits for my ork vehicles. I've been to my FLGS and while they have a fair amount of plastic stuff, they don't really have any good stock for riveting.

Can any of you make specific recommendations of which plastic bits to buy to make nice rivets for orky things... specifically grot things (so, the rivits would probably be on the small side). Preferably a web site where I could order things and have them delivered direct. Please keep in mind I'm in the US. Though, if you can recommend the products I can probably find my own supplier.

Thanks so much!

Actually marty, if you can just get me links to the specific bits that I need... I *should* be able to arrange for the order myself. And it's the specific products that I'm really asking for. What diameter and kinds of rod make for good rivets, bolt heads, etc. I'm assuming I can find thin sheet for crude washers... but heck, I'd even take that if you can find a link to it. Keep in mind these are for both ork and gretchin constructs... so the grot stuff would be very small when compared to full sized ork rivets.

Thanks!

http://www.evergreenscalemodels.com/Shapes.htm#Round%20Tubing

Buy a few sizes... stuff is really cheap. I use round tube and cut it with a hobby knife.

Some people use plastic sheets and a hole punch.

Post by: dsteingass

The plastic rod method (round and hex) really is the most versatile and cheapest option in the long run. I would suggest a "Chopper II"
http://www.onlinetrains.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=53-694&Category_Code=PTA
or the generic version a "Chop-It" from Micro-Mark http://www.micromark.com/chop-it,9547.html This is what I have, and I use it for all rivets. -On Sale right nOW for $20.75!!

You can make whatever size rivets you want with just a supply of plastic rod. Nuts, bolts, any combination. I've done them all and they are documented in this massive thread of mine (somewhere). It is invaluable IMHO to be able to quickly mass-produce identical parts, and Rivets, nuts, bolts, etc. all look best when they are exact IMHO.

Of course, you can do the same with just a sharp x-acto knife, but they can get a bit uneven

My STANDARD rivet is 1mm (.040") rod, that is as small as I buy stock rod: seen here with 2mm Hex rod nuts, and (I think) 1/16" leather punched washers. You will get used to the joys of the Metric system when working in this scale, its quite a bit simpler than our English-Standard upbringing has made us fear about the Red Commie metric system

Otherwise for big Orky rivets, look in the craft and bead section for little hemi rivets, failing that, split peas work for really big chunky rivets. However, it sounds like you really want some smaller ones

Recently I bought a package of these Hexagonal Glitter that would work for very tiny, thin hex nuts.

I've sort of been working on my own, but it's kind of ignored or not that great.

The rod method would be the easiest though.

Skalk, do what I'm going to do: Chainsword -1 Init, +1 Str. If you feel the need to have points, a WS3 model should be +5 points, and a WS4 model +10.

Def Evergreen. I would recommend using plain small squares of styrene sheet to make Orkified washers for the bolts. I have always seen orks as a bolt type and not so much a rivet type. Kna' Mean?

Well, to be fair, this isn't like throwing some jumper cables around. This is a Black Swan event, and even I can't argue that a company should plan to handle "beyond the worst case" scenarios all the time. It costs far, far too much money to have that level of staffing around all the time. They have to deal with the critical, first, then work outwards.

Still sucks, tho'. Do you need help refilling your fridge? Can we deliver a pizza to your hotel room?
