My friend seems convinced its the Gene-stealer box.
I also wonder what the oldest metal model is. To make it interesting, let's say the "Collectors" section on GW's website is its own category.

Necron Warriors are probably one of the older plastic kits...
Not sure on the oldest however, the kits tend to get a revamp once the codex does.
I think the genestealer kit was redone in the previous Tyranid codex...

For a plastic kit that is pretty old...
It seems to be holding up pretty well though.

Could it be one of the Ork buggies? Not sure which came first between the regular and the trakk but they were originally used in Gorkamorka if my memory serves.

The ork buggies certainly look like the oldest.
As a side question, did Shining Spears come out the same time as the other Jet Bikes?

No. Shining Spears didn't show up until 3rd ed, the plastic jetbikes(which I think were released around '95 or '96) had been around since 2nd, and IIRC are older than Gorkamorka(which was released in '97). @ phear: Both the Catachans and 'Zerkers were released during 3rd.

The stealers are relatively recent. The old ones were far fuglier.
I'd say the ork wartrakk and Warbuggy. I think they are both early 90's, but i could be wrong.
The necron warriors box in current production was 1998 i think.

Wartrakk and Warbuggy in plastic are from Gorkamorka, so ~'97.
The Necrons were introduced as metals in '98. The plastics are from the 3rd ed(current) book written in the 2000's.

The plastic Eldar jetbikes (not the shining spears, the guardian jetbikes) were released in 1994 AFAIK, and they're the oldest plastic kit still in use that i can find.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. I miss the 1st ed rhinos. You could get them 3 to a box and with conversion pieces They were awesome clown cars too, being able to hold a whole tac squad in a space barely large enough for 5 marines
I think the old DE haemonculi are from the same release period as the Talos, right?

The IG Rough Riders IIRC are from 1994 but are half metal. The Ork buggies look the most dated but IIRC are a bit newer than the Eldar Jetbikes from IIRC 1996.
The current Catachan's and Berzerkers look old, but I think are from 2000.
So I think the Eldar Jetbikes have it.

Warp spiders were the beginning of 2nd ed changeover from RT circa 1993 they were the hot "new" Eldar unit. A couple of the Warlocks date back that far too (antler-man and boring-sword-pose-guy), as well as wraithguard and one of the Rangers. The Eldar Jetbike was released 1994ish.

The current plastic Eldar Jetbike is in the 1994 catalogue: http://www.solegends.com/citcat94/index.htm
The oldest, still-in use plastic I could find (the older metal jetbike is in the 1991 cataloque).
Many Eldar metal models (e.g. Phoenix Lords, Eldrad, Warpspiders) appear in the catalogue of 1993 a year earlier.
The still in use Ragnar and Ulrik appear in 1992, predating most of the (then newer) Eldar range: http://www.solegends.com/citcat9x3/c92390spacewolves-03.htm
The generic Eldar Warlocks/Farseers, some of them still in use, appear in the 1991 catalogue however http://www.solegends.com/citcat911/c2093eldaravatrwarlks.htm
20 years now going strong.

Well, there are clearly Plastic Space Marines and Plastic Genestealers from as early as 1990. But they are not "still in use" as asked by the OP and have since been replaced by newer plastics.
I don't think Sisters were released until.. dunno.. 1996 or 1997 or so.
