I have seen, and I have heard, and now despite what Chattar Lal would prefer, I will talk.
Credit where it's due, somebody managed to convince Jared Leto to tone it down. The writing doesn't support his character's 'journey' very well, so he's basically just the same one-note protagonist the whole time even when he shouldn't be yet, but it's not a bad note and by the middle of the film the plot's kind of caught up to how he's being written and, I don't want to get carried away and say "he works", but he's not being a problem. Greta Lee gets a lot more screentime than the trailers made it seem - more than Jared - and while her character's simplistic, she does okay with the script she was given and isn't a drawback. The rest of the cast were just NPCs. Gillian Anderson, I assume, has been in the business long enough that she'll just put this out of her mind and move on to her next project.
Personal taste in music may be colouring my reaction, but as McCoy once said, I'd have given real money if Nine Inch Nails had shut up. The score wavered uncertainly between attempting to ape the original with indifferent results that would've suited a made-for-tv movie, and incoherent loud noise.
The plot basically made sense, but did nothing to expand the lore of Tron, or even tap into it beyond the superficial level of someone who saw Legacy and thought they could skate by on just recreating the look. The Grid - such as we see of it - is an empty virtual construct that exists only for action scenes to play out in. The one exception is a sequence that draws heavily on the 1982 style, but is substantially devoid of anything but pandering to nostalgia. The much-talked-about premise of 'first contact' between the real world and programs amounted to nothing, and the real world is superficial at best - like the Grid, just a backdrop for the movie to occur in.
Bottom line, as a devout Tron fan it didn't actually make me angry or upset, but there's maybe 20 minutes of entertainment stretched out to fill two hours, and once this fades into obscurity the Tron franchise will be in pretty much the same place it was before. Jared Leto honestly not making it worse is probably the most interesting thing about it.

I was watching an interview with the director Nicolas Meyer and he was talking about the difference between actors and movie stars.
An actor dissappears into his role and when you watch him, you see the character... when you watch a movie star, they stand out, they only do certain movies, and it's difficult to see the character they are portraying.
I feel that Jared Leto wants to be an actor, but every time I see him, I never see the character... I just see Jared Leto, movie star. Automatically Appended Next Post: Daia T'Nara wrote:I have seen, and I have heard, and now despite what Chattar Lal would prefer, I will talk.

How was Jeff Bridges? And was Tron in the movie?

Jeff Bridges looked like he was playing the version of his Legacy character you'd get in a cutscene to a mobile game they'd paid him to record a few lines for - a wholly generic Old Flynn, and the best you can say is he was amiable.
This movie did not feature Tron, and that's a sentence that rings true on multiple levels.

According to PostTrack, 14% of the people who saw Tron on Friday went because of Jared Leto.
Let that stew in your heads over a sleepless night.

It wasn't as bad as the box office makes it out to be and while certainly not great it is fine. Leto isn't awful just miscast and the movie is full of things that make you think how if they had done things a little different here and there it could have been quite good. The devil is in the details and they seemed to have skipped over a lot of things. For instance programs look like their programmer or user, so why does Ares look like Leto? There is no one else in the film at any point that remotely resembles and the villain initially his user is Evan Peters who looks nothing like Leto.
Still the sound and visual design are great and really spark the imagination. If you can see it on a full IMAX or big dolby screen with full chair shaking sound system it is worth the ride, but if it is a normal theater I don't think it will be much different than seeing it on a decent home set up.

The only good movie Jared Leto is in, is American Psycho. And mostly because, if I remember correctly, Christian Bale murders him with an axe.

Strange that you don't think The Thin Red Line or Fight Club were good movies.

Haven't seen it. Although looking at the cast list, I feel i should. There's a LOT of big names in it.
or Fight Club
Didn't realise he was it in. Does he get vigorously beaten and/or die?

Yeah. He plays the blonde haired Angel Face who gets beaten really badly by Ed Norton.

I don't mean to dissuade you or anything, but in spite of the cast I don't think that one's going to show up on any must watch lists. I saw it once many years ago and the only thing I still remember about it is that it's a good movie to fall asleep to.

Lord of War is another one. I thought he did quite well in that. his character definitely played to his strengths, and Nic Cage is absolutely on fire in that film.
Agree that thin Red Line is underwhelming, especially when set against Saving Private Ryan, its release contemporary.

Once you see his acting tour- de-force in Masters of the Universe, I think your opinion will change. Jared Leto was born to play Skeletor.

Thin Red Line is an auteurs movie by Terrence Malick..... so you have to go in expecting that. If you like what Terrence Malick brings to the table you might like it. However, he is NOT a conventional film-maker.
I just feel sorry for Arian Brody in that film, he was supposed to be the star! There was nothing even Jared Leto could do in that movie either way, because Terrence Malick probably cut most of it anyway. You can ask Adrian Brody about it.
