Dex - very nice man update man! Really love the smacky relic and isn't that face perfect for a priest. As scaper said he really is burdened but it looks just right. Another thing I like about this guy is when compared with your other priests is he has a much more pilgrim/hermit priest feel to him. The others feel very much high church. Was that the intention? How are you painting this one?
Damn the Cyber Dog is just ace. "Who's a cute boy!" even with a skull face.

Thanks PDH, and yeah, you nailed it. As I was looking at my congealing bands of characters, I realized I wasn't getting the diversity I needed. The general feel of the groups were coming through clear enough, as you pointed out by saying my Ecclesiarchy boys are sort of a 40k "high-church" interpretation. I realized, however, that I was looking at a group of Inquisitors and Interrogators/Acolytes, a group of Imperial Cult Preachers, and a group of Tech Priests. I wanted to mix things up, so this battle priest is attached to my Witch Hunter group, and will replace the second Interrogator I had been planning on. I was having trouble imagining how to fit in another member with actual Inquisitor status, but wanted to include an ugly bald zealot, so here we are. He and the rest of the group will be painted with dirty red cloth and dark brown leather, with silver armor plating (the Inquisitor will have gold details on his armor and robes). I'm debating if I should give the Inquisitor a standard metallic blade, or give it an orange energy effect (here comes that OSL debate again).
As far as my Ecclesiarchy boys go, I'm just about done painting my Redemptor, who adds a nice twist of grungy idiot to the otherwise well-dressed bunch. On Friday, when I visit my friendly neighborhood GW to drop off my Witch Hunter warband and wow the pants off the other contestants, I'm going to pick up a box of something-or-other to start work on a handful of Imperial citizens that the Ecclesiarchy orators have rallied to serve their cause faithfully as cannon fodder.
Also, a Rogue Trader group of at least 8 models is in the conceptual stage. Sketches for that will be surfacing soon-ish.

Update (kinda!)
In my last post I said I was going to take some of my Inquisitor models to my local GW (The Avenue at White Marsh) to enter the Band of Brothers painting competition with the intent of winning and feeling damn good about myself. And guess what, I did! I was hunched over my painting desk until the wee hours of the morning, and most of today. My neck is absolutely killing me.
This means, however, that I won't be able to take pics of the individual models until I get them back next weekend. They're currently in a display case at the GW. At some point either tonight or tomorrow a group shot of them will go up on Facebook, and I'll post it here as soon as I see it. When I get them back I'm going to do a bit more work on them, as there are some details I wasn't able to get to in time.
Just wanted to post a little bit of good news while I wait for pics. I'm off to go do yoga or find a masseuse or something for my poor twisted spine.

Prize was $50 store credit (not usable on Forge World, sadly), which I used to pick up the five Horus Heresy novels I haven't read yet. All the models I need for the next phase of my Inq28 project are already in the mail from third-party sources.
The contest pics were uploaded this morning, and here's mine:
Pic was taken with a cell phone so it's not the best in the world, but you can get a sense for the direction I'm taking them. I should be getting them back in a week, so then I'll be able to finish them up and take decent pics.

Here is the first of two updates for the day. Right now I have a scattering of somewhat random Inq28 characters, which you've seen before in a less-cool-than-this state.
First up is my Engineseer, and he served as a test scheme for my color palate for when I start knocking out a full Auxilia Myrmidon warband. I think he looks pretty good, although I may tweak my recipe for his flesh a bit to make it look a bit more unhealthy.
Here's my Redemptor Priest as he stands. One of the benefits of taking pics of my models is I find things about them I don't like that I didn't catch previously. His tabard and gloves need some work, and I'm going to see if I can do something to add a little more shine to his Eviscerator blade.
Next up is an almost-finished Brother Tymon, my Red Hunters veteran. He's looking pretty good, and I'm mostly pleased with the script all over his armor. I attempted a bisected =][= symbol on his left gauntlet, which I don't think reads too well. However, the same idea worked really well on the back of his legs, I think. My photography hasn't really captured the true color of his armor. It's much more of a natural red, and not as purple as it looks here. Who knew red was so hard to photograph? Everyone? Oh...
Edit: Forgot to say, he's really only waiting on decals. A white skull for his Chapter Badge on his left shoulder, and some Roman numerals on his right leg for a squad designation. Decals are new to me. I might have to... gasp! Buy some varnish.
And finally we have this adorable little ball of fur and clockwork. I really like this conversion, especially for how simple it was. I've been trying lately to really bring the GrimDark into my models, and I think this does it really well. I can't explain it, but his skull actually registers as cute to me, which is really weird. Not much more to do on him, maybe a few highlights here and there to accentuate his fur and underlying musculature, but he was a very simple conversion and paint job, and I won't be getting too fancy with him.
Right now I'm putting together some more images in Photoshop, so expect to see an update with my Witch Hunter models before the end of the day. And as always, C&C is desperately appreciated.

The techpriest and redemptor priest kicks ass! I love it!
But I'm not sold on your ts marine to be honest, he seems a bit flat and dull. Maybe it is just the picture.

They look fantastic, Dexter! Particularly impressed by the enginseer - you've really transformed the original model! It's a shame that almost the whole update is red (it's so hard to get the gradient to show up in photos!) but if it's up to the standard of your other paintjobs I'm sure it'll be ace. I also understand what you mean by the 'cute' skull face on your mechanomutt, so either I share your madness or you may be onto something

PDH- Thanks bud, a compliment from you is coming from the highest authority on the subject. Glad you like how my Redemptor turned out, I'm pretty proud of his pose too. Like i said, he needs some touch-ups with paint, but I'm very happy with the pose.
Gerner- My Marine is actually intentionally understated with his armor. My interpretation of the Red Hunters is that they are a Chapter created specifically to serve the Inquisition, and have not developed a stepped history with a unique identity the way that some of your more iconic Chapters have, such as the Space Wolves and Dark Angels. To that end, and taking into account that as an Inquisitorial Chapter they would have access to the newest and most advanced equipment, I wanted to keep his armor and weapons fairly factory-issue to contrast with the Grey Knights, since their gear is about as elaborate as you can get. Also, browsing images of Red Hunters from the Siege of Vraks ForgeWorld book, they look very spartan in their decorations.
Scarper- Thanks, I'm particularly proud of how the Enginseer turned out. The idea of using Undead for the Mechanicum just seems so right. The watch parts in particular turned out really well, and I can't wait to get cracking on some more of these guys. I agree with you about the red. It's not an easy color to photograph. I have a buddy with a camera that cost him more than my rent, so I'm going to have him come over one afternoon when there's plenty of natural sunlight and see what we can do. And don't worry, something blue is in the works...
Will have the Witch Hunter warband posted soon. Just finishing up editing the photos together. Automatically Appended Next Post: And here we have it. These are the four current members of my Witch Hunter group. They will be getting reinforced in the form of two more Acolytes in the very near future.
I'll start out with Inquisitor Orazio Pietro Moretti or the Ordo Hereticus. I'm very proud of this conversion. I think I really hit the nail on the head when it comes to capturing the vibe of the sinister, "I am not here to save you" Inquisitor. I ended up not putting any orange glow effects on his sword or pistol, which I think was the right decision in the end. I'd hate to ruin his brooding presence with a cartooney orange glow.
Here is our Inquisitor's son, Antoni Moretti, a zealous Interrogator who is ruthless in his efforts to prove himself and get out from his father's massive shadow. I'm nuts about the pose on this guy. The epicness of it really gets driven home in the down-the-barrel viewpoint, in the bottom left of the image collage here. The only part of him I'm not happy with are his eyes. I'm still struggling to paint eyes correctly, and his aren't quite looking in the right direction. I'm going to be going back to try and adjust them a bit so he's looking down the barrel of his hellpistol.
Next up is the senior Acolyte of the group. He's an extremely simple conversion, but I couldn't be more proud of his face. Without question, those are the best eyes I've ever painted. They really do capture the expression of weary contempt that I wanted to capture. I will be adding two more Acolytes to the group styled in the same way, with rifle-style autoguns instead of the SMG this guy is carrying.
Finally I have my Warrior Priest. I love this guy. Even though he is easily recognizable as being made up of mostly Flagellant bit, I really think he feels like a nutcase Imperial preacher, hell-bent on smacking you in the face with a holy relic. That'll teach you to be a heretic! He was also my favorite model to paint thus-far. His face was an absolute delight. It's a shame I won't be painting that head again in this project, because I had a great time picking out the scars and wrinkles, making his lips and eye sockets look raw, and really playing with the depth of some of his features. Without a doubt, one of the finest heads GW has ever sculpted.
So there you have it, my Witch Hunter warband as it stands. As I said, two more Acolytes will be joining them soon, but they aren't overly special. Also on my painting table are the Navigator and his House Militia (remember him?), which will provide a much-needed break from the brown and red paint. I'm also going to force myself to work on something big and bad enough to give Brother Tymon pause. And I hinted at my Rogue Trader crew a few posts ago, but they may go on hold while I crank out a Mutie warband and a few mercenaries. Stay tuned, I'm way too deep in minis now to stop!

I'm glad you're in too deep and I really hope you can't stop.
Really like the warband they capture the witch hunter feel so well. A mutie warband will make good opponents for these guys
The Inquisitor is good, I like how you have combined the wizard kit for the cloak, seamless and totally changes the base model (I had to look twice). He has the classic van helsing look 40ked by nicely. His pistol is just fantasy enough to make it look properly 40k.
The hell pistol on the Interrogator is so striking. The colour of his coat is really nice.
I think the Acolyte is my favourite model it might be simple but it feels right. The head and the smg
I'm impressed with the painting of the =I= and eagle on the relic. The parchment on him is great too. You really achieved the look of nutcase imperial preacher with this one and the paint scheme really adds to it. I agree that is one of the best faces GW have every released.

Thanks PDH, it feels good to have put together a group of models that feels cohesive and of a high enough quality to hang with the big boys like you and Mol and Baiyuan. Like I said, I'll be making just a few final touches to these guys, fixing some imperfections I found when looking at the photos, and photographing them in decent light with a high-quality camera. Other than that though, these boys are done. I got some parts in the mail today, so after I muscle my way though the next few hectic work days, I'll be able to put together some more models. Gotta keep the masses interested...

Or some radical inquisitor warband.
They look incredible good, and fits well together.
There is some union in them, they look like a group.
What factions are they? Guess they are puritan, but what else have you in mind with them?

These guys are a Monodominant group. Fairly typical for Witch Hunters, I know. In the narrative I'm building, I wanted to establish a solid, uncompromising puritan element. The storyline I am working on focuses on Istvaanism, and the sort of manipulative characters that embody such a philosophy.

Nice, I think it's good with a monodominant group, they may be typical in the fluff, but it is rare I see them as miniatures.

Freaking great, Dex! I completely agree with Peter.
The engineseer looks a bit flat though, I'd say be daring and put some black into the folds of his robe, that'll be much better. And if you have balls add some dark blue shade afterwards, that would make him come alive.
The skaven gun is waiting in my bitzbox too, I simply didn't have the right project yet, which means it's good idea.
I agree with Gerner on your marine, but your reasoning made sense and I'm not even familiar with the red hunters, so I'm shutting up on fluff. What makes him inferior to the rest of your work imo, is the style of painting you chose. You seem to work with very light shading on most miniatures, which looks surprisingly good, but on such big surfaces as the ts marine, it results in an lack of contrast. If you add a some light highlights and shadows and maybe dirty him up a little, he will look less "flat and dull" as Gerner put it. No offense, mate!
Your Inq is the archetype of an ordo hereticus Inquisitor imo. Perfect adaption of the witchhunter codex's vibe.
Lots of really good stuff, keep it coming. Puts some pressure on idle bastards like me... but then again, ME3 is arriving tomorrow. WHY oh why...

Baiyuan- Many thanks. I think a lot of the problem with these photos are I have a crappy camera and am in the bad habit of taking pictures at night with artificial light. The shadows were glazed in using a "natural" black I mixed up from dark blue and brown. There's a lot more depth to it than shown here, especially on Brother Tymon. I do agree with you that he's too clean though. I actually just bought some Vallejo pigments, so after I get a little practice with those I'll give him some worn-in grit on his armor. I also need to get my hands on some of that compound that makes decals easier to work with. I forget the name, but it's the stuff that makes wet decals mold to curved surfaces better. Any help?
