I like the weapon you put on this inquisitor, do you have any closer pictures of said gun?

My senior Witch Hunter Inquisitor is almost finished. His supercool hat is drying, and when it does I will do some detail work on it, and that should be it for him, unless I decide to add some more detail to his robes. I'm leaning towards keeping them bare so I can do freehand work on them, but I may add some trinkets hanging from his belt.
The other character I started yesterday is a sniper-monk. I had the idea for a sect of Imperial monks that have a very Zen take on the Imperial Cult, and believe that enlightenment and self-realization is attained through meditation, prayer, and military service to the highest Imperial powers. Their calm, almost pacifist demeanor make them excellent snipers, and frequently offer their services to Inquisitors and the Imperial Cult. The first thing about this idea is the glaringly obvious; this is not exactly GrimDark. So, my challenge is to somehow spin this Zen-sniper idea into something that works in the context of 40k.
I based the conversion off the amazing Nurgle Chaos Lord. I wanted my sniper-monk to be fat and happy, so it was a perfect model to start with. Filling in all the gaping sores with green stuff was a bit of a chore, but I got it done without leaving any fingerprints. The hardest part was the face. This is my first time sculpting any sort of facial detail, and I hope that the green stuff dries cleaner than the picture would suggest. If not, I'm going to keep going back and re-working it until I get it perfect. When I held the model up, I realized just how huge he really was. He's actually taller than a Terminator. Clearly he has a pretty serious case of acromegaly.
Later today I'm going to tackle putting his rifle together. I wanted him to have a completely unique weapon, which seems to be turning into an obsession for me. Hopefully I'll have updates tonight, but no promises.

Very cool conversions. The monk is looking pretty good. I like his hand a lot. I'd say his smile needs some work, but it's a good first go for sure. Did you use some smiling Buddhas for reference?

swampyturtle:
His body is the Chaos Sorcerer Lord, with arms from the Empire Battle Wizard set. His gun is put together from a Kroot rifle and some lantern-looking bit which I'm not entirely sure where it came from.
The Good Green:
I agree with you, his smile is the most difficult part. I did indeed look at smiling Buddha statues for reference, as well as faces of smiling sumo and Samoan men. The real difficulty in the sculpt is getting the smile-lines created by his cheeks to sit properly next to the mouth. The issue I am struggling with is that when I attempt to correct the cheeks, it impacts the mouth, and vice versa, so I have this back-and-forth thing. After taking that picture I made the smile look a little more convincing, and am letting it dry completely before I go back with a fresh perspective. One thing that keeps coming back to me from my human figure classes in college was a bit of advice my professor gave me. He said "take clay off and put clay on. You accomplish very little by just pushing clay around on the surface." This is harder with green stuff for obvious reasons, but by sticking to this advice as best I can, I am making good progress. As I said, considering this is my first real attempt at scratch-sculpting any part of a face in this scale, I think it's coming along rather well. I won't settle for anything that doesn't reach my own standards though, and am prepared to work his stupid fat face until I'm old and gray.
Rogue Wolves:
Thanks, and I agree that this model has been used a lot lately. I wanted to do something with him, as the model is really unique. You don't see a lot of fatties in the GW range (ogres don't count). Most of the conversions I've seen of him thus far have been using the Ork Nob weapons, but I figured that somebody that fat would probably prefer a much less aerobic form of military service. Thus, I made him a sniper. The idea of him sitting on his fat butt in a tower all day (which he doubtlessly took an elevator to the top of, rather than the stairs), eating candy bars, waiting for his intended target to wander in sight is something I think makes him a unique character.
Since my last update, I added a few purity seals to the back of Orazio, as well as extending his stole to the inside of his right sleeve. His hat got a band around the base, and when the putty is dry, I'll add an =I= symbol to the front. Gyatso Tok (fatsnipermonk) is almost dry, and when he is I'll go back with a hobby knife and a new batch of green stuff to keep working on his mouth, cheeks and chins. I also need a nick-name for him. Something the others call him behind his back to make fun of his "glandular problem", but don't have the heart to say to his face because he's just such a nice guy. I'm thinking "Snacks".

I said the same thing when I saw your thread! I had seen your Nurgle Lord conversion featured over on the Molotov's Inq28, and that's what really inspired me to do my own version.
Late last night I did some more work on the Navigator, and he is very close to being done. Orazio likewise is almost done. I just need to do a little bit of sanding on his hat, and add the =I= to the front. Gyatso's smile is looking much better. I'll have pics of all of these later this afternoon.

Rogue Wolves wrote:hows your special husky fella going?
Still fat, but in my opinion, less stupid-looking now.
I think once his cheeks dry and I use a little liquid green stuff to fill in any cracks between the brown stuff and green stuff, his face should be done. Time for another anecdote from a different college class in human figure. This one was exclusively a drawing class, but something the professor said holds very true here. Part of our homework was to do a certain amount of anatomical sketches a week, focusing on different body parts. As it turned out, this was a great way to get girls to come home with me and take their clothes off. One of the other students in the class was a woman in her early 40s or so, and asked the professor's opinion on doing sketches of someone who was heavy. She was married, her husband was a little on the pudgy side, and she didn't feel comfortable asking some random guy at the gym to pose for her. The professor said not to use overweight models, because fat doesn't really obey any rules, it just sits there, you don't know what's going on underneath it, and it really just ends up making you more confused. The point is, with Gyatso here being the porky fellow that he is, it's hard for me to know if I have the anatomy of his face right, because fat makes no sense. I'm going to have to trust it, and make sure I give it one hell of a paint job. I'm still very open for suggestions on how to improve him, however.
Orazio is about done. I added the =I= symbol to his hat, and although it looks a bit like a Green Lantern symbol right now, I'll get it right in painting. Unless someone points out a glaring inconsistency that I missed, he's ready to be painted.
I did a lot of work on my Navigator last night. He is about finished. The lower portion of his staff dried at an angle, so I am going to cut it off and re-glue it so that it dries parallel to the upper portion. I am going to give him a decorative headband that will serve to cover up his Warp Eye. I purposely gave him hands that were a bit larger than proportions say they should be (wait, there's proportions in 28mm Heroic scale?), as Navigators can possess huge, webbed hands and feet. I didn't give him any visible weapons. Who needs a gun when you can kill somebody by looking at them with your third eye? Also, for all I know his staff could have digital weapons built-in.
I've decided to give the Navigator a retinue of guards from his House militia. My Navigator is the Heirs Apparent of a House that is closely linked to the House of the Paternova through marriages. Due to this, he is fantastically wealthy and outrageously weird, and I want his militia to reflect that sense of opulence.
These are some quick guys I threw together this afternoon. I don't know if they are convincing, or if they look too much like I took Empire Greatswords and did some lazy weapon swaps with 40k kits. Opinions, please.
Also, while on the subject of the Navigator, I need to invent a House for him. This means I need to come up with a fancy name, and a House crest. The crest will be fairly simple, as I will have to paint it free-hand on him and every member of his retinue. I'm thinking it will simply be a star, or the eclipse of a star, on a field of dark color. I want to use a color for the star that I probably won't use elsewhere on my Inq28 models, such as a bring pink/purple, or neon green, or something to that effect. Something that clearly sets them apart as their own element, and has a tone of opulence and wealth to it. The color will act as an accent color for the models, not just on the crest, so if I continue to use the Greatswords as the basis for the militia, the plumes on their hats will likely end up this color.
Thoughts?

Gyatso - is coming along nicely. I like how he is almost holding his belly. One suggestion is make his cork base a little thinner as he is already monstrously tall.
The Witch Hunter is looking pretty nifty in his hat. I think the purity seals on his back need to be redone before he is finished. They don't look right or as good as the rest of the model at the moment. Actually you could get away with doing just the right one, it looks squashed.
Navigator is cool, mutant hands are a good idea.

There's some really interesting work going on in this thread. I applaud you for the amount of self-sculpting you're doing; I've never really been able to do such things.
Looking at Moretti, I think you need to rip off all the purity seals. Replace them with aluminium foil - for an example, have a look at Jakob Rune Neilsen's PMW entry here. Your purity seals are simply too large and overpowering at the moment, and need to be scaled down slightly.
I really like the posing on Moretti, and you've created an interesting character out of unusual bits. I'm inspired to create something of my own!
The Heavy is a cool idea, but I would've gone one step further and actually given him some robes over his corpulent frame - exploited the "Friar Tuck" idea.
As for the Navigator, your ideas sound good - the idea of the eclipsed star is interesting, and suitably mystical. Considering having him hail from the house of Celestino (Celestial/Celestino?) - a Navigator house I created for my Rogue Trader crew.
I'm keen to see more of this - this is a blog that makes me revisit Dakka!

I've never tried foil purity seals before. Is there a trick to them to keep them from tearing? Foil seems like a hideously brittle material. I'd really like to try using them though, so I may give them a shot. I agree, after a second look, that the purity seals on his back aren't good enough. The one on the right got squashed while drying (I probably picked him up without paying attention to which parts I was grabbing), so both of them are getting removed. If I try the foil purity seals and find that they are too fragile, I'll use plastic purity seals from my Space Marine kits.
I hadn't considered putting robes on Gyatso, although I do like the idea. It would certainly push the monk idea further, and after Orazio's cloak, I'm feeling pretty confident in my ability to sculpt folds in cloth.
I'll put in another update later today, including the purity seals on Orazio, robes on Gyatso, and possibly some more House militia for my Navigator.
Also, would anyone know someone I could trade with for this model?

I should just clarify - I don't mean aluminium foil that you'd use in the kitchen to cover food, etc. I mean either cutting up an aluminium drinks can (coke, etc.) - of if you want slightly softer metal, you could try a tomato puree tube.

You should be able to use scissors to cut it to shape - just beware, because once you cut it, the metal can have very, very sharp edges - file it down so you don't slice your fingers open!

We converted him to be a warrior-priest in an Ordo Hereticus warband. You can see him here and then on the right here, where you can see the backpack we gave him.
A nice figure, though - and very 40k, in his own way!

Apprehensive Inquisitorial Apprentice
|
I wanted to have a photo update tonight, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. I've been working on my entry for the Throne of Skulls painting contest, and have gotten minimal conversion work done on the Inq28 kids today. However, I did get a brown stuff base on Gyatso for me to sculpt his robes over. I was really nervous going into that, scared that I was going to cover up too much of the model and ruin it. However, even a rough base of brown stuff, with ugly finger prints all over it, has shown me that Molotov hasn't steered me wrong, and it is going to make that model stand out even more. I based his robe design on the traditional robes of Buddhist monks, so his right shoulder and arm are bare.
I did some experimenting with foil purity seals, using foil from empty tubes of oil paint. I liked the possibilities, but in the end I wasn't comfortable enough with this new method to put it on Orazio, who is one of the most important characters I will be building. I found some plastic purity seals in my bits box that were not duplicates of each other, and used those instead. It looks good, so he's ready for painting. I will be doing one more Inquisitor for that trio, based off the Warrior Priest model I linked to earlier. If I can't trade someone for it or find a decent auction on eBay, I'll buy one this weekend. It's only $11.50. I am thinking of downgrading the first Inquisitor in this thread, Orazio's son Antoni, and the un-build Warrior Priest Inquisitor to Interrogator status. Not that it will matter much in terms of the models, but in the fiction I'm creating to go along with it, I don't need to be throwing around lofty titles so carelessly.
I'll see if I can't get some pics of Gyatso and his WIP robe up tomorrow, and possibly throw together some more House militia for my Navigator.
