I love the work you have done here! As a hobbyist looking to get into INQ28, this and all the other grea blogs on dakka are a great inspiration to me. Now, my question is, where did you amass such a bits collection? I have no where near that amount of stuff and I've been in the hobby very actively for 5ish years.

UG:
A lot of it came from the trade-in program with BlueTablePainting (look for them on youtube for the details). I got credited about $350 for sending them all my old crap that was just taking up space, and ordered a bunch of sets strictly for bits. I also don't shy away from buying a model to use just one part on it. For example, I bought a Skaven Warp Engineer off eBay just for his pistol. The real key to amassing a bits collection is to get rid of that feeling that you need to build as many models as you possibly can. When I first started in the hobby, if I could get together a pair of legs, arms, a torso and a head, I would slap them together and put paint on it. It didn't matter how well the pieces went together, I just wanted to put together models. Now, I only build models if I have a specific idea in mind for them. This leads me to accumulate a lot of unused parts. I do my best to keep them organized, and my bits storage is pretty elaborate. So now, when I have an idea for a model, I have a lot of resources to draw on, and I rarely have to buy something new to get the parts I need to make it work.

Yeah, I am trying to do something similar by selling off old models on eBay and hopefully using the money made to fund my hobby purchases, which will include some bits and hopefully some INQ fodder.

No pics, but a little shred of good news. Earlier today I talked about how the glazing medium I used for the initial highlights on the purple cloth gave a glossy finish. Fortunately, glazing over the glossy areas using paint watered down about 4:1 covered up the gloss finish pretty quickly, and I was able to build up the highlights again without having to go back and re-paint all the purple areas. Crisis averted! Pics tomorrow (promise!)

Painting update:

As you can see, I was able to highlight the purple and cover up the glossyness of the initial highlights. I think I achieved some pretty good transitions, and warmed up the purple enough to be a strong compliment to the beige robes. The metals are nearly done, I just need to go back and glaze in some shadows here and there. Other than that, some details remain (purity seals, the pages in the Preacher's book), but these guys are rapidly nearing completion.

Let's talk for a minute about that torch and OSL. Obviously the torch up until now has only received thin coats of yellow to build up a base. I really want to do some OSL on him, but I have only tried OSL once before. You can see that attempt here:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/290505
If you guys could please look at that model, and give me your feedback on the OSL, I would really appreciate it. The reason I uploaded it to CMON was to try and get some feedback on my technique, especially ways to improve it. Unfortunately, after uploading four images to CMON and receiving almost 140 votes total, I have not been left a single comment on any of the images. I don't mind low scores, I really don't I'm there to try and learn something, not to be the guy that people fawn over in droves. So, if my readers here would kindly leave me feedback on the OSL, on here or over on CMON, I would really appreciate it. Don't really care if you rate my image a 1, I just want to get opinions on how I can get better. I think doing some yellow-orange OSL on my Templar would really compliment well with the purple, and I am hell bent on NOT screwing the model up. So, to end my rant, give me feedback, or I swear I will slap yellow and orange paint on that Templar in such a hideous fashion your eyes will melt right out of their sockets.

Dexter - The purple looks good. Nice Skaven Warlord. I think it looks great. I'm no expert and have always used http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/1288 Though I have always used quite subtle effects. For yellow I'm not sure which colours I'd use I'm afraid. Look at the link Rogue Wolves bunged up it makes sense. I'd probably paint the metal frame black/silhouetted.

Edit - How did you paint the grey/red skin around the eyes of the nurgle sorcerer? I really like it.

Rogue Wolves - That is a great tutorial...cheers.

Thanks for the tutorial links. What I think I'm going to do is paint up the torch for now without adding the OSL. I'm going to throw together a quick test model using a leftover torch from the Mordheim Witch Hunter model that I used to create Interrogator Antoni Moretti, and he'll be my guinea pig for natural flame-colored OSL.

PDH:
His skin was originally painted with Vallejo Sombre Gray, which is a medium blue-gray. I highlighted it by mixing with increasing quantities of GW Rotting Flesh. Final highlights were GW Rotting Flesh mixed with GW Bleached Bone. For the raw skin effects around the eyes, pustules, and knuckles, I did washes of GW Scab Red until I had achieved the look I wanted.

Hopefully I'll finish the conversion work on the monk today. I've been procrastinating him because I'm going to need to sculpt his right forearm and hand, and that frightens me a bit. But if I was able to sculpt most of his face, I should be able to sculpt his hand. Pics will be uploaded as soon as the GS dries.

Hi DK, been following your blog on and off these last couple of weeks as I'm venturing into INQ28 territory (not played the game yet, still at the stage of putting together figures for a warband). I find your figures to be exceptional. You're work's inspired! (don't panic, I not going to ask you for money, famed though we Scots are for bumming cash from folk ) It's given me loads of ideas though I doubt if many of them will come to fruition. Anyway, why I'm writing on your blog is to comment on you're OSL attempts. I'm not a big fan of OSL but, be that as it may I think, looking at your Skaven figure, that you haven't made your contrasts deep enough. By that I mean if you are going have areas of the figure lit up by, in this case, an overhead torch then the areas in shade need to be a lot darker for it to look right. For instance the basket of the torch may benefit from having a thin line of black painted down the centre to emulate the brightness of the torch casting light on the all of the basket but for the parts completely outside the lights aura, do you know what I mean? Also, under the figures chin, arms etc would need to be really dark too, veering towards black. The strong light from the nearby torch casting these parts into the darkest shadows as they are parts outside its reach. Of course this is only my opinion but I hope it helps you. I personally think that OSL really would only work best in a boxed diorama.
Okay, constructive criticism bit over, keep up the jaw dropping, eye popping work. I really do like it

butchyboy:
Thanks for the compliments. It's good to know that my efforts these last few years to bring my painting and converting skills to a higher level are paying off. And a big thanks for the review on my OSL technique. I definitely agree with you about the shadows, now that I take another look at it. When I had originally painted it, I painted the figure without OSL, and then added the lighting when the figure itself was done. So, I had the shadows from the ambient light already painted in, but one thing I didn't do was go in and add the shadows cast by the green flames.
I'm on the rope about OSL for figures that could be used in a game. I myself am not a gamer, and unless someone asks to buy these figures, they won't be used in a game. However, you do run into a level of sillyness when you do OSL outside of a diorama setting. If I do prefect lighting effects on the Templar, great. He'll look superb as an individual model. But what happens when I set him next to another model? Does the OSL effect instantly get ruined? And if so, if I am going for the best paint jobs I can do as an artist, will that nullify the point of doing OSL in the first place. This is what I'm bouncing around in my head at the moment. I'd love to hear more feedback on the issue.

Pics will have to wait until tomorrow, but today I did some detail work on the Ecclesiarchy. I added the script to their purity seals, and did some more work on the Templar's torch. For now I am going to leave out the OSL, as I said, but I still did some blending of the flames from yellow to orange, and did an attempt at a hot-coal effect in the brazier. I also touched up a few mistakes here and there, and worked on glazing some shadows into the metal a little more.
Also, Gyatso's right arm is in the works. I hope to finish it tonight.

Sniper-Monk update:

Still working on his right hand. It turned out to be exactly as difficult to sculpt a hand as I thought it would be. Fortunately, his corpulence means I don't have to worry about his arm muscles. His overall stance is a little cowboy, but I'm okay with it.

I'm liking the BIG guy. That's a smart looking rifle and your sculptings coming along pretty good too. Now, I was looking at this figure and wondering about ammo stowage and a thought occurred; how good would he look if he had small sewn in bandoliers on his robes, something similar to Cossak tunics

In terms of ammo storage, I haven't included a shot of his backside (sexy though it is), but he has several pouches back there for ammo storage. In terms of adding more to his toga, he'll get an Imperial Cult icon hanging from his rope-belt, but other than that he's going to stay pretty simple. Since he's a monk, I wanted to keep him clean and without much decoration.
