Have you guys all just started playing? Springing Special Characters on an opponent without telling them beforehand is considered bad form. Most are grossly over-powered and game changing in and of themselves, which is why most tournaments disallow them.

That said, if you've discussed it with your opponent beforehand and they've had a chance to include one / alter their list accordingly, then knock yourself out.

Special characters have been 100% accepted in all levels of gaming for the better part of 5+ years. Hell, I'd go so far as to say they are EXPECTED.

Sir, have you ever thought it is you who are the douche if your treat people like this?

BUT THEY ARE NOT LEGAL! If you can show me that 51% of GTs allow special characters I'd be surprised. Even if they do, they ban these three characters at every event I have ever seen.

If your new to fantasy, or your doing a 100% themed list, it is acceptable. But if your well acquainted with the fantasy scene and still take these characters just because "they are awesome" your TFG. Especially if your bringing it out for a "fun" game.

Again this may be different over the pond where GWs run gak, but here in independent land, every GT and local I've seen straight up BAN atleast these three if not all named lords.

I meant in normal games

I still don't see how someone is a douche for using them, honestly.

I know they are powerful, yes.

However, to simply call someone a douche for using them is somewhat douche bagish itself, and while Daemons in fantasy could be blamed for breaking 7th edition, name calling is just childish.

So, your effectively saying everyone who takes them is a TFG?

And who do you class as a TFG?

Im curious now as well, please explain as i havent really seen you make a definitive argument other than 'they are OP'...

Theres nothing wrong with using Special Characters. Yeah, fine, some of them are more powerful than others, but how does just using them somehow make you a douche? Teclis+PG bunker with BotWD is a DAMN tough combination, but by no means unbeatable, same goes with fateweaver (this is also the first time ive heard Thorek be called OP, EVER).

List tailoring, and adding more points than your allowance makes you a douche, no other TFG moves (or douche moves) are list-based as far as im concerned.

CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT!

Using a Special Character renowned for their high levels of power in a low-mid points casual game can be considered somewhat poor form if the other party isn't warned beforehand. But that goes hand in hand with showing the other party your list prior to the game. It's just a courtesy to ensure an even, fair fight.

But it's not a douche move. Nor does it make you TFG. It is a part of their army, and it's an entirely legal choice.

Yes, please explain why something that you can't beat, is labeled OP, and if anyone takes it they become TFG.

I personally have lost to Fateweaver many many times. But I have also started learning and I have figured out his tricks.
Maybe you should play against SC more so you can learn how to beat them. The game is supposed to be challenging and tactical, which means you have to figure out how to kill the enemy. Getting beaten down by a powerful character and then coming back next week knowing exactly what you did wrong and how to kill him while keeping a balanced list is a great feeling.

Though even then, for the most part special characters in Fantasy are pretty much a non issue. The problem comes from the overpowered ones (Teclis and Fateweaver) the rest are either overcosted or underpowered, or both.

Appearantly mentioning over and over again how they are banned in the majority of GTs is nothing more than arguing that they are op.

Yes, please explain why something that you can't beat, is labeled OP, and if anyone takes it they become TFG.

By surprising the person your playing against with a list that is not viable or legal in a competitive environment.

If you want to play him warn me, and don't be surprised if I say no (I may agree depending on my mood). But if you surprise me with it, your TFG.

Edit: it's funny, the topic has devolved from the intended problem due to quotes. To ensure people know what I'm saying 100% clearly, I may dislike special characters but I have no problem with the majority of them. The ones I do have an issue with are Teclis, Thorek, and Fateweaver. It is those three that make me think your TFG for springing it up on me, and I won't play you.

Most of the major Canadian GT-style tournaments allow special characters in WFB (Warmaster's Challenge, Conquest, Arena...)

It's news to me that special characters aren't allowed in WFB GTs.

Hiding in a dark alley with a sharp knife!

First the off-topic fun:
Turns out he was elitist, racist, and a full on idiotic incorrect BNP B*****d. He had that arrogant ignorant attitude about the job situation "Blamin it on all the foreigners" And all that stupid stuff. I just stopped talking to him properly since then. I don't associate myself with Idiots.

Did anyone else chuckle at the irony of someone dismissing a person who holds political opinons they happen to disagree with as "elitist"?

You probably should not mix wargaming with political discussions if you can't handle people who disagree with you. My own politics are hard right, but I have the misfortune to live in a city that is mostly left of center. Thus I recognize that most of my opponents are going to hold views I disagree with, so we find other things to talk about than contentious political discussions. Conflicts at the gaming shop should be fictional, not real.

Anyway, back on topic now...

I always have fun reading these "TFG" threads. The horror stories are always amusing. As always, some of the stories are so over the top, that one hope they are just trolls. But they are amusing to read none the less.

Like everyone else I have a few peeves when it comes to gaming:
-Loud kibitizing from the side line. I have no problem at all with someone watching one of my games in progress. Hell, i enjoy watching wargames bieng played as much as I do playing. But please keep the loud, unwanted commmentary to a minimum. It's just rude and distracting.
-Grabbing models off my table without asking first. I've probably snarled at more players for this reason than all the others combined. It's just rude to touch someone elses proprty without permission. Likewise, many of my minitaures are rare old colectables that are hard to replace. Hands off unless you ask first!
-Gloating in victory or being a poor loser. i get amazed at how common this behavior is amongst our community. I blame 4chan for the lack of civility amongst today's kiddies! But seriously, be polite. Be professional. And even if you're not an adult, try to act like one. How hard is that?

The BNP are scum, far right wing racists and bigots, the closest we've got to a nazi party, fortunately they haven't got any seats in Parliament. Far from just disagreeing with them, any decent person wouldn't even associate with them.

Ok, so your opinion about a poltical party you disagree with has been noted. My point in regards to the irony of the person who originally brought it up and my advice about not mixing political discussion with gaming remain. If anything, with your hyperbole, vitriol, and invalid comparisons (when the BNP starts to embrace the 25 points of National Socialism your "Nazi Party" comparison might have some value...until then it's as meaningful as calling them "mean ol' poopyheads") help me to make my point as to why one should avoid such discussions at the gaming table.
