I've had worse than that...
When I was really new to Warhammer 40k I had a 1500 point game against two grey knight players (they had 750 points each supposedly). After the first turn I realised that there really were a lot of Grey Knights on the board. I asked to see their army lists but they didn't have them so I asked to calculate their lists for them. They said 'sure' so I worked out their armies points costs. They were both at least 300 points overpointed each. According to them they thought that adding extra models to the squad it was 18 points for an extra 5 Grey Knights rather than 18 points per Grey Knight...
I managed to make it a draw by holding on to an objective to my surprise. They then proceeded to tell me how I got lucky and that they should have won which is probably true but not very sporting.
It was only a friendly game though so I'm not that worried about it. And I suppose everyone's got to learn at some point.

Joking, that must have sucked. Well done for taking the draw though, I got utterly thrashed sadly. It was looking good until those 300 points showed up as reserves.

Sorry about that.
I guess it must be pretty depressing to be beaten by someone who's taken an unfair advantage that you only find out about afterwards...

I was angry more than anything. At him for feeling the need to cheat, and at myself for not noticing. Still, at least your game turned out better.

The worst guy I ever met at a game store was when I played in HackMaster tournaments (a roleplaying game similar AD&D).
This particular guy would wonder from table to table, always with one hand in his front pocket and ask people if they had any painted female characters and then stare at them for a long time...
So fething weird...

Played a game of WHFB recently that was 1k doubles. From the get go, one of the opposing guys was a bit off. Nothing big, just mildly stroppy about showing us rules in his army book when we queried them or we corrected him using the rulebook. We won by about 100 or so points.
After he left in a moderate huff, we discovered (using a store book) that the one of the other guys was about 300 points over the limit, and that roughly 60% of his army was lord choices.

Well I've seen mention of opponents taking to many pts over, and I am sorry to say, I have done it once before, but on accident.
A guy came into the flgs that i play at every week. We started talking, while watching over some 40k games. I asked him if he wanted to play once one of the tables opened up. So we discussed pt values, he had guard and Blood Angels. we talked about 2000 pts (his guard list was 2000) but he decided to play his Blood Angels. Miscommunication, he only had 1500 pts of Blood Angels, and I had my Deathwing list out to 2000. Turn three I was absolutely killing him. I asked why it seamed such an uneven battle and we discovered the mistake. I felt like crap for accidentally taking 500 pts extra.
To make up for it, I told him to bring in two units in reserves sorta like reinforcements. That extra addage helped (all lascannons pred and assault marines) , but he still lost. I apoligized for the mistake, he said it was allright.
I feel bad about it, but I'm glad he was a nice guy and not a sore loser.
Since then I've seen him once or twice, and we just laugh about our miscommunication on pts cost.

I've found out that our TFG, a Guard player, doesn't like it when his opponents joke around and you know, treat the game, like a fething game instead of a very serious, solemn event.
He also has a habit of butting into your turn and pretending that you're already done.

The 40k community in my local area is pretty good, everyone I've met so far has been friendly, fun and just there for a good game. My experiences in various magic communites, on the other hand, are filled with so many TFGs it's hillarious.
There's one TFG from a group I was with in charlotte who was only in the group because we pittied him. But that didn't change the fact that he was the creepiest guy I've ran into yet with his odd obscessions and just general social ineptness.
When I moved to Albuquerque, this is where the most interesting mix of bros and TFGs reside. The atmosphere here is so competetive that within my first few months I had seen multiple over-the-top ragequits that involved throwing decks against the wall and threats of physical violence (no tableflips, unfortunately). I once watched someone argue with my friend about the placement of cards on my friend's side of the table and get so angry about it that he ended up being kicked out of the store.
I did have one recently that lucksacked his way into two wins in two weeks against me (I had bad draws and he had godly draws) and on the third week of us getting paired, I wiped the floor with him and he started complaining endlessly about how he has the worst luck in the world and how how he never wins because of it yet I know it's just the opposite, after watching him he's lucky as hell he just doesn't know how to play the game well.

Got a guy who likes to say "So, is that it? My turn?" so often that just the other day he said it twice before I was even done using psychic powers that go off at the beginning of my turn.
He is a veteran of 40k and has played many years.
That's not the frustrating part. The brutal part that makes it worse is that with all the Vendettas and Aegis line infantry and tanks and hydras, he could actually just go to the bathroom and I could play his army for him.
Bet I could table myself in two turns, but he drags it out for all of them. He neglected to fire certain units just to keep the game going longer.
Then, he still does the "So, that's it? On to my turn then?"
It was nothing other than an exercise in putting miniatures away. I packed up early when he ended up actually going to the restroom.

A couple years ago at Ard Boyz, there was one of these guys. He built his BT army all wrong with too many terminators and not enough chainsword troops. He kept yelling how much he hated this game and offering to sell his Templars. His buddy kept looking around and nervously laughing. Then in a big assault, he just dumped his models in a big pile and said "this is happening."

Just wondering but where did this meta come from? Last I looked 5th edition 40k meta Daemons was one list; Kairos, Thirster, Crushers, Plaguebearers, Seekers. The lists you played were closer to the actual meta than you think. Still, I get your point.
On our own guy, I've played a guy who would say items did completely different things than they actually did (he was playing so slow that I was just trying to get the game going and only checked the AB after the game) only to find out the items that he was playing up weren't even in his list to begin with A mate of mine played him once also and after my mate had moved his GUO out of the charge arc of a HKB Bret Lord, he went to the bathroom, and when he came back the Bret Lord has been turned a full 90 to face the GUO. This guy also told a new player to the game that the 6 turns of the game were his turn 1 then the opp's turn 2 and so on, just to shorten the game as the match-up was bad.

Sure they might very well be douchebags, but just because they try to maximize their chances? I'd blame the game in this case.

These characters were more even in previous editions. It's an effect of old books being broken not new rules. When it is socially understood that these characters are overpowered and not fun to play against in the communit and you continue to bring them in "fun" games, your a douchebag. There are two exceptions to this. A new player (first 6 months of experience) as they likely don't know the social atmosphere of game yet and how to optimize his usage tactically yet, and a themed list, in which case I expect you to tell me which part of the lore your based off of, when and where in the games history the army was fielded and what personal qualities you found in the character to be appealing to me.
Taking thorek, teclis or fateweaver in a for fun game randomly? Your a douchebag I won't play. Play Armies designed for GTs as a fun game without letting me know first? I won't play you.
I have 2 lists designed at all times. A hard gt list and an easier list for friendly games. Just like everything else there is a time and place for every list. If you think your GT list is appropriate for all times and places your a douche. If you think that teclis, fateweaver, and thorek are acceptable at all times, your a douche.
Maybe it's just cause I'm a fantasy player and not a 40k player, but banning things from play is far more acceptable to me.

I still think the fault lies in the game for creating these situations in the first place by having these "old books" at all.
I agree that someone that plays only to win might be annoying but simply taking things that are unbalanced doesn't make them TFG.

I only play 40k and don't get in a lot of games due to family. Every list I play is the same kind of list I would bring to a competitive event. Guess we won't get any games in. Automatically Appended Next Post: Edit: Oh and I'm a douche, apparently.

Sadly we have had quite a few TFGs at our FLGS. My least favorite are:
1. "jug-head" this guy is a poor excuse for a marine and a poor excuse for a human, he runs cheesy lists, is shady on points, never paints his army, buys the greasiest, nastiest food available and scarfs it on the table you are trying to have a game on, all while spouting commentary like a five year old playing with action figures. Every regular flat out refuses to play him.
2. "touchy-feely guy" this individual is the stereotypical guy who sidles up to the table and promptly proceeds to pick up one of your figures with his greasy mitts so he can get a better look at the paint job. He never asks politely to view them, and even worse he will pick models up from an active game. Many of the regulars have blown up on this guy and we have't seen him for a while.
3. "Tau Guy" haven't seen this guy for a while, but he was one of the least enjoyable people I've encountered at our FLGS, not because of any hygiene issues or cheesy lists, but because of his sheer abrasive personality. All he ever does is walk around with his creepy silent little asian GF and comment on one of two things; A) How bad you are at the game and how his Tau (which I've never even seen) would smash your army, or B) How bad the paint job on your minis is compared to his (never seen) Tau. Myself and another member of this forum, Laughing God, almost came to blows with this ass-hat out in the parking lot. We are both rather slow to anger individuals, and I have never come to blows over little plastic men, but when some random civilian comes up to two marines at the end of a very looong week and starts Sh*t talking your models and how you play without any preamble whatsoever, it tends to grate on ones nerves.
4. "Clan Mouth-breather" These wonderful individuals are a group of boot marines wearing moto t-shirts and sporting 'high and tight' haircuts that congregate every saturday with all MEQ armies and proceed to lock down 3 tables with a day long monstrous abortion of an Apocalypse battle, all while spouting annoying boot marine stories that they makes them look tough.. it's not so much an intrusion into everyone else's bubble like the other 3 previously mentioned individuals, but rather their effect as an overall cluster of annoyance for everyone in the FLGS, many of the regulars at our store are either career Marines or Veteran Marines and, at the risk of sounding like the old guy on his porch, a bunch of young pups running around barking like they're the big dog in the yard is annoying. Plus with them locking up 3 tables on the busiest day of the week is just plain rude.

The absolute worste for me is not the guy across the table I'm playing but the other ones who stand around trying to give "advice" or say something along the lines of "If you move here you get LOS to that" or "good bait move there lets see if he takes it". I'll often ask in a very annoyed voice who am I actually playing here?

My first actual game of 40k (around 1996) was just like that, though not at a GW store. Manager of the LGS noticed I was interested in 40k, so offered to "show me how to play". It was me playing SW against nids, both house armies as I didnt own anything yet. He gave me a basic rundown of what my stuff did, and nothing about his. No tactics advice. Just let me move and attack however I wanted to...and proceeded to take full advantage and wipe the table with me. It was a big lesson in "oops, shouldnt have done that". Hmmm...I detect an old-school RPG guy. We all do it. Different dice for different needs.

I know a guy who is a bit like that. He always acts on every mistake you make.
I also know a guy who is complete opposite. He will tell you what mistake you are about to make, thus preventing you from giving the game away.

Im guilty of that, but in all fairness its mostly because its rare. My games (of anything) usually start with me doing spectacular, great moves, great rolls, killin em all. Then the dice turn against me. I can have my enemy outnumber and outgunned, perfectly positioned for a crushing...then the rolls start failing and it all falls apart. SO when I get a chance to destroy, I drive it home.
The last game of Heroscape against my wife went that way. I was tearing her up, then she used a special power that turns a unit to her side, and got one of my most powerful guys with it. Takes a roll of 19 or 20 on a d20, she nailed the 20. It did have quite an epic ending...both with one mini left. She got to strike first, a do-or-die hit as her guy wouldnt have survived my attack...she nailed it. Last man standing. Seeing as it was my first game, I think a bit of tactical advise would have been proper. I really didnt know anything about the game, all I owned was a couple issues of WD. I did end up getting into playing the game a couple years later. I did spend those couple years buying and painting minis, but had no interest in playing the game until I met a good group of people, at a different LGS.
What I did play a few times during those years was Warzone, based on Mutant Chronicles...a very cool game, was a shame it didnt catch on more.
