I'm a scriptwriter and I've written a Horus Heresy script which is so large (600 pages) it is split into 3 separate parts.
The problem behind such a large project is money. Hollywood in the current climate is looking to save money and make films as cheap as possible.
Certain films will never be made due to financial reasons.
An argument can be made against this however with just one name: Michael Bay.
The only reason he gets the huge budgets for his films is because his films make an amazing amount of money.

I cannot quote anything as it is all on my Laptop, however I can say that the first part opens at the final battle of the Ullanor Crusade against the Ork and goes on to the crowning of Horus as Warmaster. Then the old fall to Chaos and the first part ends with the bombing of Istvaan III with Garviel Loken witnessing the bombardment of the planet and Captain Garro taking the vow of never fighting again.
I would tell you more, but I don't particularly want a law suit on my hands. All I can say is "I have tried to keep to canon as best as I can."

Well, it sounds very interesting. I guess I was wondering about how you thought certain scenes needed to be translated into a script from a novel.

I agree to an extent....The HH series is a mammoth task...unless there are people willing to make 4hr + films...which i'm a firm believer that in order to get the intensity and concepts across, you'd need to do for the HH series. Another route is to make a TV show...but one thing I think would need to happen is the entire thing to be made in like CG as some of the real life constructs for things such as power armour, and titans etc you just couldn't mould together to look real and practical.
I think maybe they should scan certain actors faces onto the CG models and do recorded voice.
Even so, I'm kinda thinking that whatever WH40K film is made...it should start firmly at the beginning and not at the commencement of heresy. The heresy should be left on the pages and brain matter to allow folks to make their minds up...alot of films that are made out of comicbook/novel material in this particular genre often sorely miss the point/mark...The Horus Heresy and anything within 40k is largely about using your own head, making ones own mind up about what's going on...the same as if you were playing on the tabletop...it's up to you what you think/do. Massive stories to movies, as this would be, often lose the point of making ones own mind up. Instead they present a collection of ideas to you and then conclude it for you.
Alan Moore had a good approach to things....making them 'whydunits' instead of 'whodunit'....THAT is the essence of WH40k wether on the tabletop or on a screen.

I think something generated from one of the many short stories is more than likely be the source material. When you stick to a novel or a series of novels they require too much development to make a go. When you make a pitch it has to be concise and you ahve to have ademographic. Miniature gaming has been gaining in popularity and more people have signed on with the success of the DOW series videogames and the recent release of the W40K RPG. ut I think the MMORPG that is is the works is going to have to be succesful before you could convince any exec to get a studio to buy in. I think it will happen but as most always happens it will be sub par to the core audience, but might be a blockbuster for the majority.

I have read all the novels so far and the key text I used was the Collected Visions of the Horus Heresy as it is the most detailed text that doesn't go OTT.

They could however do it on the battle for macragge they'd probably change fluff if its any war, nids attack it looks bad, 1st company gets wiped out.(They'd probably change it so the main character lives.)

I think it might have to move somewhat differently. For a first time main stream film. I think that it would have to start with a covert ops team trying to uncover *insert alien scheme here* and it leads to a climactic final battle *or was it *
People can relate to smaller groups more easily and it is smoother imo for story progression. Look at Band of Brothers or Flags of our Fathers. They focused on smaller groups with a few large scale battles. While a real trench assault could take hours or days, I for one would want something more. Especially now that it costs me around $40 to go to a movie if I take the wife too.
It's easy to get people up to speed on the "history." Narrated montage! Look at Wing Commander. It would only take 10 mins max to explain the emporer, the spread, the fall, and now the dark ever present war. Heck the background of the universe that is in the front of all the novels is less then a page long...

I haven't been able to find it on youtube but, way back in like 1990 GW made a small Dr.Whoesque 40K television play. It was like 10 or 20 minutes long. If you saw it now it would be totally dated. If I recall correctly, there were some Chaos Marines and an Inquisitor with some Space Marines. It was low on action.
I imagine if they ever make a movie that video will surface.

Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles ?
I wouldn't mind a TV series like that, based off of Gaunt's Ghosts or some other series.

i agree, they just have to make sure its... well funded, and sticks to the "rules", like i wouldnt want to see the eldar siding with the chaos, i would but would( being as i play eldar) want to see chaos kill the eldar and corrupt them, things like that. Automatically Appended Next Post: I also think the best chances for the movie would be the space marines(hopefully white scars or some unheard of chapter) or eldar. I can only see those, tau, it might be alright but they have a game
