It's kind of tough to relate to a seven foot genetically engineered killing machine screaming for 2 hours. As much as I appreciated what Zach Snyder did with 300, I thought screaming Spartans got pretty ridiculous very quickly.

I was always of the opinion that the Gaunts Ghost series had the most potential, and would be the most feasible budget wise. Best bet would be for SciFi/HBO/Showtime to option a Mini-Series a la Battlestar Galactica and make it into a series if it was popular enough. But that's just me.

I dont think so, ive started reading the soul drinkers omnibus and i feel for them, they were betrayed by imperium, then the Inquisition guys went after them because there scared of rogue SM and nothing happens to everyone else (im not done reading yet)

And a more important question would GW even allow a movie 40k related to be made? and if they did im sure they would want to control a lot of its production. Which could deter interest of people wanting to make a 40k movie

If they ever do make a 40k movie it probably be one of these two ways:

1. Make a movie like 300 or something like that to get the mainstream audiences attention and hopefully draw them into 40k [the fluff atleast].
or
2. Make a good storyline LOTR type film based either on a major 40k event [horous heresy] or create one of their own [dawn of war] and draw them in that way.

Personally I wouldnt mind either of them, but if they do make a 40k movie then it shouldnt lose the plot about 40k and put in other random crap out of nowhere. Stick to what is true, otherwise when it is released the mainstream audience will interpret that movie as what 40k is all about, which I for one do not want to happen. But it would be awesome to see a 40k movie released especially if it like the dawn of war intro's [the original and/or dawn of war 2].

I might concur. Perhaps use Space Marines as secondary characters, or even a single Death Watch or Grey Knight Marine...

In one of the Ghost books, the Astartes were kind of a distant thing, where they did their job, left, and left the Guard to clean up. It kind of lent a vague, supernatural image to them.

As opposed to 300, something along the lines of the Riddick series would leave enough gloom in a 40k film.

-50 Credability (entertainment) for Gwar for referencing the spin-off of the right series of films....

But at least you had the right vein of films (almost...).

Give the project to Ridley Scott and let the man run with it. At least he'd be able to get it right.

if i would every create a movie of warhammer 40k movie it would be about the imperial guards perspective - i imagine the war for armageddon the whole movie is about one squad surviving against countless waves of orks and when they are slowly losing there squads number the space marines come down from the sky devastating the orks a regaining the morale for the squadron charging for there positions and fighting the orks, the movie ends when yarrick duels with ghazghull as an epic 5-10minute scene, when this is happening the sqaudron is fighting a winning battle and when the orks leave it opens a cliffhanger for the 2nd war of armageddon as seeing the orks in the jungle. with the graphics seen today (the lastest star trek) this is easily possible and would seriously be badass. the combat would be similar towards 'Saving private Ryan' but instead more 40k and huge badass titans!

I think a good way to make a warhammer 40k movie would be to introduce people to the fluff/history. Start off with how all this war began, how and why the imperium was formed etc. That way people watching the movie wouldnt be confused as hell about what was going on. The challenge would be doing this and still making it interesting to watch.

I disagree, movies are generally better when you don't get into the back story, case and point is the original star wars, they started in the middle of the story. There is way too much back story to explain it all. LotR did a good job with their 10 minute introduction, something like that might work.

Alright, first 10 minutes=formation of imperium+horus heresy
then the movie will be based on a major war like armageddon, but not a black crusade, but the movie needs orks in it, cause everyone will love orks

I think we should be talking more about the actors in this film! I definatly want Patrick Stewart in this, as well as Sean Connery! I think that guy who did the motion effects for Gollum in LOTR and King Kong in the Peter jackson film should do the motion for the orks, he is brilliant at bodily acting and just deepen his voice and he could do a great ork voice! Ron Perlman should also play an IG commissar (spelling error, I'm sure of it) and get Angelina Jolie to play an eldar Giggity

We iz made fah stompin'!

Ron Perlman is a good call. I don't think the orks should talk, in fact nobody should speak English except the Imperium, everybody else should be subtitled, but not the orks, they just make noise and seem to communicate.

Mixed feelings about this one...

I agree that talking orks would be sort of a letdown to the traditional alien stereotype, but Orks are just so damn funny (in a dark way); at least have them say WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not just London; Cockney! Cock it up with Cockney!

Oh! And they could do it like they did in Hunt for Red October. The Russians start the movie speaking Russian. Because they're Russians. But, early on, there is a close up of Sean Connery's mouth, and as we pull back, English is coming out of his mouth. It's the director's way of saying, "Yes, Russians speak Russian, but we know you hate to read subtitles." They could do that for the Orks.

Well, considering they will need subtitles even if they DO speak English, it wont make a difference

Plus a Movie with orks but without a Ear Splitting WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! will be an upset. And another thing, if they have the orks actually saying "Waaaaaaa!" I'll be very upset. Its meant to be a more bestial roar than a word.

Re: Live Action

I think Chronicles of Riddick had a perfect visual style, and is the closest we've gotten to a Grimdark Gothic Sci-Fi movie, which isn't surprising since Vin Diesel is a big-time gaming nerd.

Let's be honest, this is a pretty decent approximation of Space Marines in power armor:

Plus you could make live-action Orks by mixing good make-up like this guy from Galaxy Quest:

with the gait (Orcs) and scale tricks (Hobbits) used from LOTR.

Of course, Riddick did rather poorly at the box office, so a gore-filled grimdark gothic sci-fi movie that's rated R would pretty much only appeal to us nerds, and subsequently not turn a profit.

It needs one essential thing to be an epic movie:

-Chuck Norris as Marbo

on a serious note: with technology today i strongly believe it is capable to create a digital simulation of the WH40k universe as we know it ( i mean if you have looked at the star trek/transformers detail is epic ).

i reckon live action is the only way to go, completely cgi (monster inc.) or anime would fail alot in that setting

in terms of movies, the lotr style 3 epically long movies would be awesome as it would provide enough of an incentive to get people to research it if they felt strongly enough about it, and then they could make an HBO series to continue on from the movie, but with a different story, gaunt's ghosts would work well

Yes, and if you look at LotR, notice how muich money was spent on them...

Now compare it to a Crappy B Movie (which is about what the budget would be)...

Yeeeeeah Id rather cut off my own testicles with a Haddock than watch a Live Action WH40k movie.

Now having a animated 40k movie with the main character styled on Vin Diesel and Voiced by him (and Perhaps a Samuel L Jackson Voice too, we all know how he loves to do gakky B movies), would be epic win and cake

Cheese Elemental's recipe for a game-movie:
1) Take video game or tabletop game.
2) Find famous director.
3) Ask him not to direct the film, and find someone really obscure instead.
4) ???
5) PROFIT!!!

Paul Anderson would love to do it. I have to admit, he did manage to pull off Resident Evil pretty well.

And it should be CGI, ala the Dawn of War II intro.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

If they ever do a 40k, which they wont, It has be gothic and dark. With a feel similar to 300 to get the main stream involved. CGI would be a must less the power armour might be quite hceesy looking and the orks end up looking like Bane from batman and robin!!! Anyways id love to see a 40k movie and the time might be right. We nerds have gotten bombarded with great movies the last few years so why not.

I just watched Damnatus last night (apparently it was "leaked", you can find it on torrents with English subtitles). It's surprisingly good, and suffers only from abysmal special effects. Good plot, decent acting, and true to the Grimdark 40k background. Even the costumes are pretty good.
