No, a 40K movie would bring in a lot of idiots who come to Dakka and say "Hi I like 40K" and we'll say "Great! What armies do you play?" and they'll say "WTF? I thought this was a movie discussion thingy?"

Oh and if you want a plot, take IG and 'Nids and rip off Starship Troopers

You can probably tell I am against this movie idea

Ok, since were all tossing ideas around, this is how I see a viable 40k movie (well actuly a triology) being made, and of course each film would have to run at least 2.5 hours.

First film: intro -set in pre-heresy time with the emporer still "alive",this would avoid the need to distigush between CSM & SM to joe public, 3 main armies in the film would be IG, SM and Orkz.
Basicly this would be the film to introduce the public to the "general ideas" behind 40K,fight fight,Dogma of the Imperium, fight fight.
Also in this film (insert appropiate actor here) as Horus would begin to "hear the wispers of chaos".

Second film: The Heresy..title self explanitory, this film would primarily focus on SM & CSM with some IG tossed in (but of course as Chaos rages across the Galaxy most 40k races could get a bit of screen time).
This film could end with A: The opening salvos of the traitors assualt on Terra, thus making the third film a "wraps it up" movie with the final battle between Hourus and the Emporer etc. or B: With the Emporers interment to the Golden Throne, wich would bring us to.

Third film: There is only war...sort of a catch all (and possibly the most difficult film to make, however I would see it from a Imperium in shambles, rebuilding "everything looks pretty bleak..but we fight on" point of view)
This film could show some "new threats" to the Imperium (Nidz?),but basicly would have no "happy ending" just a " The Imperium shall live on" bow out....not a real Hollywood ending, but the only fitting one IMO.
Well, thats my 2 cents, now all thats needed is a brilliant script writer to take the ball and run with it...Oh,and to sell the whole idea to the cinematic powers that be
Film ends with

While I agree with you that for the most part Hollywood basicly up whatever they get their tentecles on,I see it this way, books, hobbies (40k) etc are the "steak" (for the most part) of enetertainment, Movies are sort of like cheeseburgers, dont expect much ever..but somtimes their amazingly good .

Quite wrong, the alleged built in audience in existing franchises has little impact on the success of a major studio release.

The place over there.

I think a 40K movie would be really good as long as it sticks to the history of 40K and doesn't make anything out of preportion or change anything.

A good base would be the horus hersesy like "thoasandtg son" says.
They have the novels, do something with it.
Look at Star wars it worked out, only took 25 years.

I heard a rumour once that BBC was making a CGI version of the novel's. Rumour*

A struggle between man is everything humanity wants.
Son betraying his father.
Pulling his brothers down with him.
Brother fighting brother, and thealien race's join in to cleanup the left overs.
And a great clash at the end.

The old 40K movie i think early 90'ties. was a dissaster.
On youtube you can find some clips from it.
Imperial guard and Space marine's main part.
crappy one-liners and conversations.

I think the Warzone movie is a great warning of what happens if you try to make a movie on a budget. A 40K movie will have to be big budget and unlike the LOTR movies, the general public are not even aware of the 40K universe.
LOTR was made because of the massive fan base the books have. Hopefully a combination of the Black Library books and the DOW games will get a movie made because the tabletop game aint going to do it.

Books are never made into movie because of their fan base. The studio has to believe in the movie. And what producers decided to believe in changes every month.

http://www.damnatus.com/seite.php?file=info I found a movie but its in german and looks like, as typhoon said, on a budget. Most noticeably is the fact that the entire movie takes place underground by the looks of it.

Damantus actually got cockblocked by GW because of their idiotic IP policy being incompatible with German Law (In a rare case of Rulebook Trumping Codex. GW Says "Yarr We Own All Rights!" and Germany Says "Lol No Wai, dey Haz Ritez!") so its actually illegal for them to show it (to the best of my knowlege, not sure if the situations changed)

But the sad and depressing truth is, a 40k Movie will, if its ever made, be boilded down to Marketable stereotypes and be fluffraeped so hard it wont walk right ever again.

All in All I hope they never do.

If they DID however, I cannot see them making it live action. I would absolutely LOVE to see a Straight to DVD Anime Release, since they need less money to make and can survive and make a profit on a lower target audiance (i.e. Less Fluffraep)

To support jabbakahut's arguement. Godzilla (the 1997 US produced film) is the highest grossing Godzilla movie ever (something like 20x the gross of the next Godzilla film) and a financial success world wide despite it previously (and still) having a niche' fan base. Yet, if you ask just about any Godzilla fan, it is one of the worst Godzilla films ever (if not the worst). A few big hollywood names and a huge promotional budget and the film's a hit despite its true fans. 40K could go the same way with the right team, we'd probably mostly hate it though.

Oh, I'm with you on the Uwe Boll comment, yeuch!

I can see it now, a stylized Space Marine captain in shadow backlit with some Dreadnoughts fighting Orks siloutted in the distance on a ruined city backdrop with the words...

i am slightly bias, but wouldn't a movie based on the Soul Drinkers be a good way to introduce the 40k to the masses? well of course the whole, it is the 41 st millennium, and there is only war, giving a few basic introductions to the factions and then cutting to the first story of the Soul Drinkers boarding the Space Fort in their first story i know it may not be for all, but it is a good story line and i like it, it also introduces plenty of other races, chaos, dark eldar, the IG and the Inquisition and marines, well that's my thoughts, it will be interesting to see what others think

After looking at some videos in DOW 2 its possible to make a full movie and would be amazing.

Gw would have to be 100% ok with it and basically be the director and so would basically kill it.

I reckon there are more people who like 40k than steven segal, so if he can be in movies, so can genestelers.

Genestealers were in movies. Alien, Aliens, Alien3, Alien Resurrection, AVP and the dreadful AVP Requiem (was this last one a Uwe Boll movie? I couldn't tell because I couldn't see what was going on.)

Really, is there any better idea than to just make the Horus Hersey as a movie? Sure the fans know the ending (tell it to the Tolkien fans), but it's really one of the most interesting stories in the 40K 'verse.

Ha ha! Now that's funny! To be honest I never liked the Transformers way back in the day so the movie just was the same sillyness with a bigger budget. Hence, just as silly. And what does critique-ing have do to with failing anyway? Weird.

Now Lord of the Rings, there is something Hollywood (or more accurately, Kiwiwood) ruined. Don't believe me? Have you read the books since you've seen the movies? Don't misunderstand, the movies have some fantastic and classic elements to them and the acting was (mostly) superb but as a whole (I'm judging the whole of the movies versus the whole of the books) they do not hold a candle to the books. I still watch the movies but there are whole scenes I just skip completely or I'll get pissed off.

Well I am a guy who was brought to the 40K universe by the videogame. I am now entrenched in it and have made it a full-time investment and hobby. I ahve seen a couple short films put out, mostly dealing with the inquisition. I do think there was a possibility of a film but it never reached fruition...one can have faith in the Emperor.

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

Unless Zack Snyder (or a director just like him) does the 40k movie and gives it the same treatment that he did to 300 and Watchmen, it will be done wrong.

Dakka will hate it almost as a whole, and it will be stupid.

Go ahead, give the job to Micheal Bay if you doubt me.

Wow, way to speak for everyone.

The problem with fanboys is that their fanboys. It's not fair to compare multiple interpolations of a fiction through different medium. LotR was an incredible series of films, to whine about the books being better is to show how closed minded someone is.

Although incredibly unlikely in any future, a 40K movie would fail in any fans mind if you have preconceived notions of what it "should" be.

With LOTR i love the books but i still loved the movie, granted it wasnt 100% accurate.

There are alot of people slagging off the movies because of the allready existing high fan base. There will be a high set number of people who would see it plus all the new fans that would be made.

When people say its geeky and wont get enough people to see it, lord of the ring was fairly "geeky" before and look how well that did.

it would have to be a minimum rating of 18 to make a true gore soaked bloodbath that it should be.

And that's where the plan goes Tits Up to use my Pure English. GW will never let a Studio do it like this as they will be scared someone will sue them (don't ask why, nor ask if it will even be successful, even false accusations can destroy a company) because they ed up some kids brain or something. And even if Hell Froze over and Hel became a Nice Tropical Beach and they did, there isnt a single movie studio that will do it because it's too "risky" in that it might not be a hit.

The only way it would ever be done is as a Direct to DVD job, which is why I said before It would then have to be a Japanese studio. For those who may not know, Direct to DVD has a different cultural value in Japan. While in the West it is mainly reserved for Poor Quality low budget dealies or Porn, in Japan it is considered something for High Quality and Experimental Films to be made. And Porn.

Now they style I'd love to see it as, if anyone has seen that American Dad episode Dungeons and Wagons, the "Game" Sections look awesome.

Unfortuantley you are correct because some little kid will get to watch it, get traumtised then there parent will blame GW rather than themselfs for getting for them.

I rember we had the intro to the orginal DOW with the orks and blood ravens fighting on the hill playing on the TV. Some parents looked shocked at this "kids" game and that was a realtivley tame video so a full blown 18 movie would have rage at GW.

i like the style of the cutscenes in DOW 2 a mix between cartoon and CGI and i rekon would look amazing as a movie rather tha real flesh and blood actors, if final fantasy gets 2 movies then so should 40K.
