I dont really agree that Orkz would be unaceptable "bad guys" due to LOTR,I belive that most people who would know the difrence between 40K Orkz and LOTR Orcs will,of course know the difrence, and the general population, who for the most part have little to no idea about such things will for the most part simply view Orkz in a "Wow lots of big green dudes with axes, cool, pass the rasinettes." mentality.
IMO (as I stated waaaaaaaay back at the begining of this thread) A three part film concerning the Hourus heresy would seem to be the most viable story to translate to "the big screen",although I do tend to belive that for the most part fans of 40k the game would not care for any "hollywood" interpetation in general.

3 Films? Not enough, unless they are 7 hour epics. There is just Far too much material to cover. laugh all you want, but other than the Dungeons and Dragons Multiverse, 40k is the most highly detailed and rich mythos there is. A Much better situation I think would be a Series straight to DVD, much in the way OVA's are done in Japan. This has the advantage of being able to not leave anything out, as they are not constrained by the limits of a cinematic release (I mean, you know how much it took to convince the to let LotR run as long as it did? And even then they had to cut out 1/4 of the stuff, as evidenced by the existence of Directors Cuts) or broadcast timeslots. This means the Director and Writers can actually do a good job and not have to worry about "omg will movie goers get this" because they will be able to tailor for the people who will actually buy/give a flying toss about it, which are the fans. And I also agree Holywood should stay as far away from any adaptation as possible. What we want is an Independent Animation Studio to do it, western or eastern there are pros and cons to both. That way it will be done right.

I definatly agree with you GWAR concerning having a straight to DVD series, particuliry being done via independent animators.
IMO it would be infinatly more desierable to see the 40k univeres brought to life in this manner than to see it hacked and sterlized for mass consumption .

How about we have a straight to DvD thing like the Animatrix. Different animators, different stories. Short clips, maybe up to 30 mins long for a clip.
Sounds good to me.

As long as it was just a collection of short stories and nothing regarding major "events" then yes, that's a nice idea. Anything Major like the Great Crusade or the Heresy would have to be done by a single studio.

That seems like the best probable outcome. The animatrix was really good, and by using a mix of animators, the style isn't locked down and can be seen with multiple interpretations.

QFT that book was small, and very well written, the end was bitter sweet but it held true to the dark 40k setting of war and death, a movie based on this book that followed closely to the writing would be amazing

I would concur on either of the last 2 poets. Fifteen hours was a cool story and could be done really well as a Saving Private Ryan type of SciFi. The Souldrinkers could be good but it would need a little work. The steady mutations that occur, the betrayal of the AM. They may legalize marijuana in the States before a W40K movie comes out...

If they include orks in a movie I really think it will attract people to our hobby. Orks are really cool, their funny and badass at the same time! They are also completely different then lotr orks and when people see the movie they would see the difference. A good idea IMO would be SM vs Orks and incorporate CSM and a bloodthirster in there somewhere...

-cough-
California passed Proposition 215 in 1996, later renamed the Compassionate Use Act, which would protect anyone from criminal prosecution if recommended by a doctor to use marijuana as relief from some critical illnesses such as cancer, anorexia, AIDS, and glaucoma. In early 2009, California state representative Tom Ammiano introduced a bill, titled Marijuana Control, Regulation, and Education Act, to legalize, regulate, and tax the recreational use of cannabis in California.
I know it's not all the States, but still

Based on this mentality, I would normally tell you to go die now...
But that's just because I like to watch movies that are complex, gripping, and carry a plot line that takes a bit of thought to follow. The fact of the matter is that, if you make this as a straight to DVD, given the mentality and movie culture in the US, it loses any credibility it would have as anything but a hacky release that would be doomed to be shown on the SciFi channel every day for about a month and a half before being relegated to the dollar store bargain bin, never making it's initial investment back.
On the flip side, if they just make it a 90 minute popcorn flick (pronounced "*censored* pile of *explicit* *censored*"), then you end up alienating your core customer base for the material that spawned an abomination of that scale. It would make money, but, in the end, it ends up hurting the bottom line for GW, as it would attract very few people to the game, and a few people would walk away from the game altogether based solely on principle.
For anyone that needs a shortened version of my opinion on the matter:
The Transformers movie sucked. Movies like the Transformers movie suck. It's not that movies like these shouldn't be made, as we all consume crap on some level (Hey, how many people here like Twinkies?), it's that you won't be able to do the IP justice one way or the other.

2-2.5hr movie set in a hive about a chaos cell trying to subvert the local population in anticipation of a chaos invasion force. Imperial guard or PDF with help from the inquisition fight to save the hive until marines and others arrive to save the day at the end. Maybe have one or two marines arrive early to help out.
Whatever they do has to have human interest in it somewhere.

Well economic woes may stir enough for the states to legalize marijuana and then regulate it as alcohol and tobacoo are. The proposed tax revenue would top 100 billion over 10 years.
The simple reason marijuana isn't legal was based on timber interests and racism...Thanks Mr. William Randolph Hearst.

If we are speculating at the actuality of a movie, and not the possibility-the gamers make no difference to the movie. The 40K community is not such that could support a movie by themselves, more so I barely think the 40K community would make any dent in the film if none of them went-a complete boycot. The movie would have to reach for a broader audience.

QFT.
Bring it on, I dont care if the movie is a horrible terribad rehashed ruined piece of fluff with bad CGI graphics.
I will still play 40k, all my friends will still play 40k, and we MIGHT get a couple more friends to play too.
The few people who would stop playing 40k based on principle or disgust need to just lighten up.

I have to disagree, a competent enough film team can create a movie that satisfies "everyone" I think the best way to create a movie like this is to make it like a novel, the novels have an entertaining plot, loads of action, and stay true to the game. McNeil? We should be so lucky. If a 40k Movie is ever made we will get C.S. Goto to write it, it will be directed by Uwe Boll and star Keanu Reeves and Arnold Schwarzenegger as a SPESS MAHRINES. On a Positive note, who thinks Kevin Conroy would make an awesome SPESS MAHRINE?

I don't know if it's been brought up yet, but I don't think Space Marines would make for a very engaging characters. It's kind of tough to relate to a seven foot genetically engineered killing machine screaming for 2 hours. As much as I appreciated what Zach Snyder did with 300, I thought screaming Spartans got pretty ridiculous very quickly.
I was always of the opinion that the Gaunts Ghost series had the most potential, and would be the most feasible budget wise. Best bet would be for SciFi/HBO/Showtime to option a Mini-Series a la Battlestar Galactica and make it into a series if it was popular enough. But that's just me.
