Love the Huntsmaster model. I had to see for myself when you said the base was the Chaos Lord in Terminator armour. But it's just... much... much more!
To be honest though, I like that half-nekkid warrior you put him next to out of the entire army! He looks pretty sweet, and I think that's what I see when I think about the age of the techno barbarians before the Emprah brought it all together.
But overall, a really, really great army you've got here!

I think its great the way you manage to combine the techno look with a medieval influence, You get the feel of old time warriors slicing and dicing but with updated weapons.
I like the way the Ork pads blend without looking Orkish or standing out, really like the look of the tormented head good choice on that one.

That Huntsman is a fantastic model, yet again. The thing I really love about your stuff (apart from how well done it all is of course) is how 'simple' your conversions appear to be. I obviously mean that in a good way, you take bits from various box sets and make models look so much better, I can't remember seeing many kit bashes as good as yours. But unlike some conversions you see, that use a vast array of bits, skilled green stuff work, plasticard and the like. Unfortunately I haven't go the money to go buying Chaos stuff before the new codex comes out, but i'm preying Khorne is well represented, so I can finally start building up a dedicated Khorne part to my Chaos army, probably starting with some Brazen knights, but pretty much everything in this thread is inspiring work.

Thanks for the kind words, rodgers37!
I know what you mean: With the huge amount of plastic kits available, kitbashing has basically become an art form of its own, right? In any case, it's very handy for someone like me with very limited GS-skills. I've also yet to try my hand at the whole plasticard thing, so until then kitbashing's the way for me
Alright, here's the promised mini tutorial on my Traitor Guard. Let me preface this by saying that this is not about producing award winning stuff, but about getting a couple of models done reasonably well in a reasonable amount of time. Towards that end, we'll basically be doing three major steps: basecoats, washes and accents. I'm not going to stop you from throwing in several steps of layering and detailing somewhere along the way, but don't expect that kind of stuff from this tutorial. This is the quick and easy recipe
Oh, and it's also virtually identical to my Traitor Ogryn recipe, so you're basically getting two tutorials for the price of one
Everybody ready? Alright, here goes:
We'll be dealing with three traitor soldiers here. Three is about the maximum I can realistically paint at the same time without going crazy: I have a pretty short attention span while painting, so something new has to happen every once in a while in order to keep me interested. Also note that, if you're following this recipe, the models will look quite horrible for a pretty long time. Don't get nervous, have a little faith. Keep calm and carry on
First all the models are spraypainted with GW Chaos Black undercoat. Then I lay down the base colours. You know how to do that, so I probably won't have to hold your hand. Here's what my models looked like after this step:
In this particular case, the colours I used were GW Dheneb Stone for skin and bone, GW Adeptus Battlegrey for the fatigues and bases, GW Scorched Brown for leather, wood and the beards, Vallejo Tinny Tin for the brass trim, GW Boltgun Metal for the blades and metal parts and GW Mechrite Red for the odd armour plate.
I usually start with the innermost part of the model, which is usually the skin. Then I do the fatigues and base, then the leather and wood, then the metal parts. This means that, painting the skin, I can be as messy as I want. I can clean up the mistakes during the next steps. When all the base colours are there, take a moment to tidy up the mistakes in all the different areas. Always finish one colour on all models before ging on to the next one. That'll save time and sanity, although it'll get rather boring over time (that's why we only tackled three models, see ).
At the end of this step, the models will look rather flat and uninteresting. Don't lose hope, here's when the magic happens!
Bring out the washes: In my case, I use GW Ogryn Flesh, GW Devlan Mud and/or Agrax Earthshade and GW Badab Black and/or Nuln Oil.
1.) Use GW Ogryn Flesh to wash the model's skin. We want a slight, rosy tinge to the skin without it actually looking healthy. Meanwhile, be sure to get some of the stuff into the recesses to take care of shading and add some depth to the model. Using your paintbrush, you can actually control rather nicely where the shadows will begin to form. It might take multiple passes. Better safe than sorry ;-)
Here's a detail of the squad leader's face:
You can see how the wash has created a relatively realistic shading of his skin.
Repeat this for all the models. Then you can either wait for everything to dry, or you can move right along to the next step:
2.) Wash the bases and fatigues with Devlan Mud/Agrax Earthshade. You should be able to do this, since there's little enough contact between the areas of skin and the actual fatigues. You want some nice, deep shadows in the recesses, so don't be stingy with the stuff.
3.) After all of this is well dry, wash the base, fatigues and metal parts with Badab Black/Nuln Oil. Yes, you read that right: The fatigues and bases get the double treatment. Again, don't drown your models, but use a fair amount of wash.
When that has dried as well, use Devlan Mud/Agrax Earthshade on the bronze, red and brown parts. Oh, and don't forget the bone!
Here's what the models will look like after washing:
Better already, huh? As Steve Buddle once explained in a WD article, this can really be a magical moment: Walking away from a model that looks unimpressive and returning to see it transformed by the washes.
Anyway, here's where the fun begins: Now we're going to do the accents and details. You can really knock yourself out here, although I can be helpful to know when to stop Here's what I did:
- I layered GW Red Gore onto the red parts.
- I brushed GW Dwarf Bronze on the edges of the brass trim
- I brushed GW Graveyard Earth on the leather and wood
- I used GW Vermin Brown for the beards
- I brushed GW Skull White on the edges of the bases, giving them a nice rubble look.
- I also brushed Skull White on the raised part of the fatigues to add to the sense of depth and make them look more dusty and threadbare. This is a matter of personal preference though, so you may want to leave this out.
All of this was rather quick. I took a little more time for the following steps:
- Use GW Dheneb Stone on the raised parts of the faces (i.e. nose, cheekbones, brow, lips)
- Use GW Mithril Silver to do ageing effects and weathering on the metal (by edge highlighting or just stippling it on haphazardly with a dry brush). Also use Mithril Silver to carefully drybrush the weapons, blades etc.
- Use GW Bleached Bone to accentuate the skulls and bones.
You can actually keep working on the details for as long as you like. After completing the above steps, here's what I ended up with:
Certainly no award winning material, but they'll look well enough on the table Here's a couple of additional detail shots:
And we're done.
When painting Chaos Ogryns, I would take some extra time to add some bruises and shadows to their skin, using a mix of GW Baal Red and GW Leviathan Purple. I would also brush GW Graveyard Earth onto their trousers to show where dirt and grime have accumulated. And I would add some extra rust and patina to the metal parts, using thinned down Vermin Brown for the former and a thinned down Mix of Vallejo Halcon Turquoise and Skull White for the latter. Here's an example:
Due to his size, this guy allows for a little more detail than the regular traitors. He still matches the overall colour scheme, though.
And with that, the tutorial is concluded. I hope this can be of some help to you. Any questions or remarks? Just let me know

Thanks, guys! My first tutorial ever, I'm feeling quite emotional
I'd like to show you some more traitors today, the ringleaders of my small force of malcontents, so to speak. The old LNTD list allows you to field up to three Chaos Space Marine champions as a part of your traitor force. They are supposed to represent Chaos Space Marines that left their legions behind (or fallen loyal Space Marines for that matter), trying to build up their own forces. But when I started converting my traitors, I felt that I would prefer my Chaos champions to look more like they had once belonged to the same Imperial regiment as the rest of the force. Another advantage to this strategy would be that the models would be equally usable in different army lists (Chaos Champions in LNTD, officers in IG and Vraksian Renegade Militia). And I also figured that it might be a cool idea to build some champions that could be perceived to be aligned with a special Chaos God. In an overall undivided force, these would be leading squads pledged to a single god in battle. The overall theme of a rogue regiment of the Imperial Guard would remain intact, however. So with that in mind, I started converting my “ringleaders”. Here’s what I did.
The first model simply sprang from the desire to convert the WFB plastic Nurgle Lord – it’s just such a cool model that I simply couldn’t resist. Cameron’s fantastic Renegade Sergeant was also a tremendous inspiration! Even though I stayed closer to the original model in my conversion, it really didn’t take a lot to “ 40k-ify” the model. This is a WIP shot:
Basically all I did was to change his weapons and add a couple of bits and bobs: Instead of a two-handed axe, I used a Bolt Pistol (from the Khorne Berzerkers) and a vicious looking weapon from the WFB Chaos Knights. I had to add a bit of greenstuff to the wound where the axe handle normally rests across his belly, but apart from that, it was a fairly easy kitbash. I also added a slightly converted CSM backpack, some cabling and an electrical coil to make him look less medieval.
When painting him up, I eschewed the standard Nurgle scheme of greens and browns in favour of using my “regular” traitor colour scheme, because I wanted to tie him in with the rest of the force. I then went back and added all kinds of rust and weathering effects to represent the rot and corruption that is so typical of servants of Nurgle. Here’s the finished model:
Not only is the plastic Nurgle Lord a fantastic model, it’s also a huge amount of fun to make the paintjob go as disgusting as possible! I added some nasty yellow pustules and used gloss varnish to make his open wounds and sores look all the more horrible. But while the model clearly reads as a champion of Nurgle, he still shares the same colours as my other traitors.
As for a suitable retinue, I am thinking about a “Chem-Squad” of some sort, a unit of trenchers with gas masks, sporting a look between medieval and World War I. I am still looking for the perfect recipe, although the models will probably be based on Bretonnian Men-at-arms, taking inspiration from Dave Taylor’s fantastic “Genswick Rifles” . All in due time…
For the time being, I contented myself with building a second officer for my Traitor Guard. Here he is:
As look at the severed heads might tell you, this guy is pledged to Khorne. I didn’t want him to look too similar to a World Eater though, so I went for something a bit more subdued.
The basic model consists of the torso of the new WFB plastic chaos wizard combined with the legs from an old plastic Goliath ganger from Necromunda. I added a bare arm from the Gor kit and a chainsword arm from the normal Chaos Space Marines. The scarred head came from the Cadian command squad and was a perfect fit.
Once again, the paintjob uses the same colours as the rest of the traitors. I must say it was quite a nice change to be painting a follower of Khorne with very little red.
This guy could eventually end up leading a squad of beastmen or something of the like. But he also makes a rather nice “normal” traitor officer.
That leaves only Tzeentch and Slaanesh, although I already have a couple of ideas…
In the meantime, let’s take a look at the bigger picture: All in all, I am rather pleased with the development of my small Traitor Guard force! As of this post, here’s where the army’s at:
The command squad and one squad of traitors are complete. The Ogryns are playable (althoug I’ll add at least one more model to the squad). I also have a number of additional champions. Another squad of traitors as well as a mysterious transport vehicle have been built but have yet to be painted. Like I said, a squad of creepy, faceless WWI-esque trenchers would be nice, and maybe there’ll be a squad of beastmen or a full blown Leman Russ at some point? Or a couple of heavy weapons teams? Or cavalry? Whatever’s fun to build and paint, I guess! With the rules for allies, I can actually use these guys even without having a fully rounded out force. I also really don’t give a hoot about their power on the table. For me, it’s usually enough that they look the part.
Let me know what you think! As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

@ Baiyuan: No problem, mate! I'll admit it's sometimes easier for me to really go to town on an Inq 28 model than on my World Eaters. Nevertheless, I hope that some of the things I try with other models flow back into my regular 40k army. And then there's the fact that some of the conversions I am most proud of are in fact from my World Eaters army.

Alright everyone, update time
My recently discovered love for converting and painting Traitor Ogryns would not let me rest until the fourth member of the squad was completed, so this post will be about him.
After the last Ogryn (you know, the one with the tongue…) had been such a joy to build, I found myseld really psyched for the next model. Unfortunately, it was a bit harder to come up with yet another Ogryn without the whole thing ending up boring. The reason for this was that there is unfortunately very little diversity in the plastic Ogres: While there are lots and lots of cool bits, the kit just offers two bodies, and the positioning of the arms is very restricted.
So it took me a while to build the last squad member, but in the end I prevailed. Here’s what I came up with:
Once again, the head was quite difficult to get right: I used a helmeted Ogryn head and added some augmetic goggles. But that alone made the Ogryn look like some really flustered fat guy with glasses, so I added an Ork armour plate to give him a closed helmet once again.
I tried to combine various visual elements from the other squad members without duplicating them outright. So the Ogryn got the helmet and goggles and some armoured arms from the Ironguts kit while also sporting the armour plates and a strange tank grafted to his back. He ended up looking like a “missing” link between the first two models I built which is just what I had intended.
I really wanted to use the huge club from the Ironguts kit, since it looks like a truly improvised weapon. It took some time to get the pose right, but in the end, everything worked out rather nicely. I also added some bags to the model’s waist to make the area look less plain.
By this time, the recipe for the paintjob had been well established, so all I had to do was to follow it. This also allowed me to finish this guy in a little over two hours which is quite a feat for me. Here he is:
The Ogryn’a giant club was painted as if it was made from stone studded with rusty metal. I wanted to give it a really used look, which I think worked pretty well.
Looking back on it now, the gut plate looks a little too busy. Mabe I should have gone with something simpler there. I also managed to overlook a very noticeable moldline along the right hand.
Apart from that, though, I quite like the result. And the best thing is that I now have a fourth member for my merry barbershop quartet. Take a look:
These guys really look like they mean business, right?
I will probably add yet another Ogryn to bring the number of models in the squad up to five, but that will have to wait for a bit. Although I am already finding myself thinking of the next conversion in line…
Until then, as always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Knowing you, KS, you'll probably make not one but six more ogryns. Not giving you any ideas, am I? And that 4th ogryn is great, real great, certainly looks like he means business!

Ah, you're reading me like an open book, mate
Seriously though, I only have one more Ogryn body left, so there's a natural limit to how many I can build. And I don't see myself getting another kit. They were great fun to build and all, but if I were to build another squad of hulking mutants, I'd probably go for a different kit just to have some variety. Minotaurs would be nice. Or Vargheists...
Oh, awesome, NOW you're giving me ideas... I hope you're proud of yourself!

Natural limit is good, unless I'm around, I don't care about that sort of stuff! In all seriousness on my end, that would be an expensive way, last I checked 6 ogres cost less than 6 Crypt Gouls or Minitours Of course, they also are a bit static, compared to the gouls that is. And, yes, I am proud, ideas make the world spin round (well, not literally, but you know what I mean? ) (I'm sleepy so if this makes no sense, that's why)

Still, I've wanted to try my hands at those Vargheists for quite some time now. Hmmm...
Anyway, none of this will happen before the new Chaos Codex hits anyway. Until then, I have at least one more Ogryn before me.
