How about this:
Space Wolves are Dwarfs in space!
Stop howling
-
I said SILENCE.
-
Better.
No really, cant resist to find out if I am right.
Propose is:
Space Wolves have a viking style => so have the Dwarfs
Space Wolves like beer => Dwarfs are great brewers and their own best customer too
Space Wolves have runic weapons => Dwarfs use runes a lot, weapons are one major product
Space Wolves have rune priests => Dwarfs have rune smiths, both work against magic/psi...
Space Wolves seem to become grizzly => old Dwarfs are not so different
Space Wolves and beard => Dwarfs are the N°1 of facial hair style.
Space Wolves like their sagas => Sound pretty similar to Dwarfs and their reminiscence to their heroes
Space Wolves use axes => pure Dwarfishness
Space Wolves are headstrong => try to change the mind of a Dwarf...
Space Wolves home is a mountain => who lives in these areas usually in whfb...? maybe...
Before come down on me, please try to think about these points.
Its sometimes assumed that most 40k armies have equivalents in whfb.
So any input , ideas, additional points, counter arguments, would be welcome.
Please refrain from orbital bombardments, thanks.

Heretic! (and this is coming from a Chaos player ).
Dwarves do not ride anything*. Space Wolves apparently ride wolves now.
Space Wolves are 7 feet tall. Dwarves are ... 3?
Don't get me wrong though, the similarities are many... and you could (and should) certainly make a Space Dwarf (note: not Squats) list. No riding wolves though!

Having discussed this with Jervis back in 2000 when he was giving a couple of american tourney players and I a tour of the studio the day before the UKGT I know the answer.
Space Wolves are not dwarfs in space... but they do have part of the squats background.
Back in RT era squats were a hard working vikingesque but high tech race.
Space wolves were blue grey armoured marines, like BAs were red marines and rainbow warriors were lame.
When it came time to redo the squat army the designers realised that the viking portion had gone to the SWs, the massed bike riders and trikes had turned into the ork kult of speed, and the massed infantry using lasguns had been well and truely overwhelmed by the IG, who did the same.
So all the best bits of the race had been parcelled out to make the other armies stronger, unintentionally at first. And when the designers realised what had happened, it was just too late.

Could be a Fantasy source ( not GW ), one author gave them ponys ( but the Dwarfs were still bad at riding ).

Good point.
Thanks.
May we call the SW the style and fluff equivalent of Dwarfs then?

Think Vikings and Dwarves would get along
Does not make SW same
Used to have squats in one specialist game (battlefleet?) that was the 40k dwarf.

Their Space Vikings! they would have to be short to be squat's. Although Elves and Dwarves in folklore have norse root's.
They also sorta need to the to thier leg's long beard.

*Sigh* Lost opportunities aside, I gotta agree that Squats were, and to some people, still are Space Dwarves. Ratlings still carry on the Squats love of food, drink, and their ability to... 'secure' almost anything a Guardsman may want to trade for.

Its not about size.
There may be not so many races in whfb as large as a Space Marine.
Thought more of their style/design/background....
So SW would fit into the 'nordic' scheme like dwarves do in whfb.
Would it hurt that much to share some ( not so bad features ) with a fantasy race?
Or is it just because I said dwarves?
I am not saying Space Wolves are the same as Dwarves. But they have enough similarities to see a connection.
Whfb 'viking' style = Dwarves
40k 'viking' style = Space Wolves
Possible to build SW with dwarven heads? Or go for Halvar, ulme, tjure and snorre...?
I think to say SW = vikings nicely supports my idea of 40k and whfb sharing some fluff concepts and SW...
got the place of the Dawi in 40k.
Maybe not exactly but enough of it to close any possible gap to put a "real" dwarf army in 40k.

To really answer this question, I will go to a specialist game, Blood Bowl. As it states in LRB5, "The Norse that takes up Blood Bowl is a truly unedifying specimen, interested only in beer, women and song off the playing pitch, and beer, women and bloody carnage while on it!" The Norse, as one might guess, are up to their horns in runes, or at least should be.
Not dwarves.

We came to the same conclusion in my shop a week ago when the codex came in.
-SW's now have 'slayers'
-Heroes must be unique similar to the rules on dwarf runic weapons
-rune priests/iron priests
-both have runic weapons
The whole live in a mountain, hair in places humans shouldn't have hair, pride and stubborness bordering stupidity, and lots of axes thing that both have going on.
I'm going to combine the SW sprues with short little dwarf legs and make a squat army out of them.) TWC will be old dwarven death rollers from bloodbowl.
