In your squads, doing the chainsword tango

Lootas are a great shooty unit for orkses. They are great for poppin' transport and walkers, and can work well vs infantry.
The two issues i commonly see when people field them is LD and LoS/cover. at 15 ppm, they are expensive for orks, but to get mob rule, you need over 11(?) models. Too often i see this great squad parked in some ruins at the backfield, only to lose 3 mangs and fail a leadership check off the board. As for LoS/Cover, i've found that it can be hard to keep the lootas in cover, since with a 6+ save they will end up as a expensive smear on the field otherwise, but keeping LoS. One tactic i showed my friend was having ~60% of the squad in cover, and the rest can chill out in front of the cover, so their LoS isn't blocked and they still get cover saves. Losing sight of a crucial target is such a kick to the nuts as you cannot shift your position and open up on it.
So dakka-ites, have you had these issues before? how did/do you get around it? any tips or suggestions?
cheers

The only obvious solution I can see is sticking a big mek with a SAG and boss pole in the unit. But then you run the risk of blowing the squad up with double 1's

Never put a Big Mek with a SAG in a loota unit. First, it is a waste of points as far as characters go. Second, most the time he won't be able to hurt the targets you want your Lootas shooting at in the first place.
If you are afraid of their survivability then I would stick them in an Open topped Battlewagon, bought as cheap as possible, to give them an AV14 bunker . I have fielded 2 units of these in my 2500 Speed Freeks list.
It works like a charm. If they are focusing on your AV14 to stop the death from shooting out of it then their firepower is split, and if they ignore it then they suck up lotta shots every turn. Classic "Catch-22"
Sure, some armies will have the answers to the problems you present on the battlefield, but isn't that the name of the game? Winning, from a tournament perspective, is based as much on luck of the draw as it is generalship .

I like to stick three full units of them in three battlewagons, with a KFF mek, all next to each other.

Its nice but i think the option i like better is 2 WarBosses letting you 2 Nobs as Troop and taking them in Battle wagon D.Transport. So who you gona shoot? 3 Battle wagons at the back or the 2 with deffrollas in front

I've done three before but I have downgraded it to two because there was just so much more I wanted in the list lol. Besides, if two loota squads can't main what you are aiming at then three probably won't do much better lol.
I like to place as many threats on the table as possible, like the 3rd HS BW towing around a 20 man squad, one Nob Squad in a BW, and 6 Trukk Boy units, with the random buggies here and there

I like the bunker Idea as it is hard getting around 3 Battle Wagons that have AV 14 in the front and are obscured... When all else fails... they are still boyz and they are still in a battle wagon...

It sounds good on paper, but I'm curious how practical it is. I think its far more likely that most of the Lootas will end up having LOS problems to good targets or end up having to fire through your own units, giving the enemy cover saves.

Lootas in Battlewagons serving as an elevated firing platform in an AV14 bunker that gets a 4+ cover save when shot at....pretty much a staple of a serious Ork shooty list. I'm not going to elaborate in detail here because I've already done so here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/264154.page

I remember reading someones post elsewhere, that the most brutal thing they faced was 12 lootas, inside a killkannon wagon, that had 4x rokkits on it.
So yes, battlewagon lootas is an idea....it's an idea I don't personally like, but it's an idea. The battlewagon would be better without any guns, just sit there as a bunker.

A neat tactic I saw this year with Lootas was to use them in cover near the table edge as normal, but to combine with a Battlewagon and a squad of 20 shoota boys. In Pitched Battle or Spearhead deployments, the Shootas ride in the BW, and the Lootas just deploy in cover. In Dawn of War, the Lootas ride on in the BW, and use the extra movement distance more easily reach a good firing position, which they immediately disembark to on turn 1. The Shootas then climb into their ride afterwards. This helps the Lootas get into a good spot despite having started off the table, so they lose minimal effectiveness.
