Was in a debate, and some of you vets and not so vets maybe able to settle.

What army is a hordiest horde army in 40k? I mean can put the most models on the table or simply completely outnumber the opponent every game?

Is it the Orks or the Tyranids?

The old Tyranid book would let you run 6 broods of 32 Spinefist-Gaunts for 160 points each. 192 models in troops, for 960 points.
9 Warriors (spinefists + SycTals) could be run in HQ and Elite for a total of 54 models at 180 points each 1080 points total. so for 2040 points 246 models.
If you eliminate point restrictions, you can fill 3 FA slots with broods of 32 Gargyoles each (300+ points) for another 96 models.
Toss in 3 Zoeys, and your remaining HS choices could be biovores (and depending on how you count, a LOT of spore mines)... total model count 347 + Mines.

If you fill up ALL your slots on the Force Orginization chart for orks you can have 180 ork boyz, a hell of a lot of buggies a deffcoptas 2-3 full mega nob squads, Gazkul, and a Big Mek, and some looted tanks.

I don't know about old or new codexes, but I do know what you GET for that model is important.

An ork shoota boy at T4 with Assault 2 18" range guns for 6 points...vs a spinefist gaunt; well, I don't know enough about them.

You can make a very nasty swarm ork army though.

6x Troop choices of 30shoota boys: 180 models for 1080 points.
3x Fast attack choices of Stormboyz at 20 models each: 60 more models for 720 points
3x Elite units of Lootas - they fit into this army very well: 45 models for 675 points.

Add whatever HQ you like in there. You could also substitute the 180 ork boys for 180 gretchin at half the cost. Obviously the orks need a nob with a powerklaw in each unit to provide some close combat insta-killing (and anti-tank), but in terms of pure numbers, that's the bulk of it.

What about IG? At 5 points a guardsman, wouldn't they have the best chance against all but gretchen? Not to mention the ability to stuff 100+ models into a FOC slot.

Of course, unupgraded guardsmen is just silly, but for pure numbers, why leave them out of the running?

You can get 447 men in a 2000 pt IG army.
CCS
6 Platoons, each with PCS, 2 Inf squads, 50 conscripts.

(That's 455, but you go 30 pts over and have to cut 8 conscripts)

Eldar Corsairs: 4000 pts
Imperial Guard: 4000 pts

I think the reason the OP didn't include IG is because of the question...

It was, "What is the HORDIEST army in 40k?"

If it was "What is the LAUGHIEST" army in 40k, then I would have said IG. Horde IG. har har har.

I think Tyranids, mainly for the "without number" ability for Gaunts. If my boyz had that ability it would be soooooooooooooooo broke.

Largest horde would simply be the army that can field the cheapest units. Orks would probably get that with grots (maybe IG still)

However, if you want to be effective...it would certainly not be IG. Orks can shoot on top of assaulting like pros. Same with Nids. IG are garbage in CC.

Unless there are fifty of them and a commissar who makes sure they don't bugger off.

And then there are conscripts.
Aren't they the same points cost as gretchin?

But if you were going to max out your army to it's fullest extent, looking only for more models, who would be the most effective?

Orks = Loads of Gretchin. LOL A conscript could kill a gretchin. (Though he would feel awfully proud of it)

Nids = Load of Guants. How good are they?

IG = Loads of Guardsmen. And you get orders. 50 lasguns with FRFSRF? Yes please.

Id agree with that. Gaunts can get without number, and basically just keep on coming back. Orks dont get that.

I'm assuming thaat without number and send in the next wave don't count to your troop count, simply bacuse that's not more models on the board at once. Just a small mistake that Dashofpepper made about grots, they are 33 to a squad, 30 grots 3 slavers. So thats 198 models, more if you count squig hounds as models. IG can put the most models on the board, Orks are the most effective hoard.

Not really, if you're after an Ork horde army, you'll be using Grots. They're not too effective are they?

IMHO the ork horde is definatly the best way to run orks. Not 200 maybe, but at least 120 (BOYZ!) at 1850. (not that I play 1850) Whereas, it seems that as of the current codexes, 'nids favor at least partial Nidzilla and IG has better things to spend points on that JUST guardsmen.

Ah, but I only have to sacrifce about 20 or so Guardsmen to afford a Basilisk. And there are plenty of guard to spare. :happyguardsmen: BTW, no matter our horde size spendage we STILL get orders.

In the list I run, I fit 80 IG footmen and 2 Basilisk in 1000pts. Everything dirt cheap.
