Ah, I see. You should have just said so earlier, it's a bit better now. I guess 10 becomes a bit better now as well. Still it's not always good to make fun of those still learning stuff.

which isn't difficult, 1 year. but I've read the rules over too many times to not get them right at least 80% of the time.

Yikes, err... I thought codices are so simply written that an 8 year old might have a fairly good grip on what wargear is allowed/disallowed after 10 minutes of reading...

Assuming that its stuff that people have said to you. In which case the answer is simple, show them the codex/rulebook and make them look like fools.

In other news, Solon please add more to your posts, we're not mind readers. Otherwise this could be considered Trolling. Would have taken 10 seconds to have put "Things people have said to me" at the top, with maybe a "Please add your own" at the bottom otherwise it just looks like a bland generic statement and the MOD's ain't to appy bout dat humie!

I run into this sometimes. My approach is to combine repeated rules-lookups with patronizing phrases. My opponent will argue something, and I'll look it up in the rulebook and show it to them. If they say something like, "That's not how I learned it" or something similar, I'll say something like, "You're welcome to use made-up rules elsewhere, but right now we're both using 40k rules." After this goes on a few times with some patronizing comments, I'll kick it over to "Look, I can show you in the rules AGAIN, or you can take my word for it and keep the game rolling smoothly."

No one likes repeatedly being smacked in the face with the rules.

***Disclaimer*** This isn't a tactic to use for new players who don't know the rules - be nice to them and help them. But it works wonders when pretentious people get into rules arguments with me. I'm happy to say "I don't know?" and look something up myself, and am very pleased when I learn something new about the rules.

@DOP: Great idea, although patronizing comments tend to make you into TFG. You'd need to find a balance so you don't look like an donkey-cave.

That's a personal judgement to make for each person you're playing. I tend to be friendly unless someone just keeps going - to the point where they're either BEING TFG or they're just plain unfit to be playing in a tournament.

Make sense? Using the OP's example, there's a wide gulf between "You're not allowed more than one land raider per army" and "Do land raiders have any restrictions on their use?" Or between "You can't have three plasma-grade weapons in one tactical squad" and "I don't know space marines very well, how do special weapons get inserted?"

I'm always doing the latter kind of questioning because I don't know everyone elses' codex very much at all.

@Cap Solon: It took me a while, but I got it.

Someone insisted to me that SM CAN assualt out of a Drop-Pod becuase it's open topped. I hadn't played an Opponent with drop pods before so I took his word for it. A mate (more experienced) walked up beside him, luaghed (the page for Drop Pods was open) and pointed at the rules.

Another was where an opponent put his Platoon Command (with a medic) into a 50 man combined squad. (Which gave him roughly 55 models all with Feel No Pain.) I collect guard, so I knew something was wrong. I swiftly pointed it out to him in the rules, and to this day I'm not entirely sure that he didn't already know, as wasn't trying to pull a fast one.

What I hate is when people insist that we roll to settle the dispute even when the rule blandly states that they're wrong.

1. You can't move over enemy models! Not even if you can fly!

2. Don't do that, move that way! No, don't move THAT way, you thick? (I moved the way he told me, didnt feel like arguing why stopping 5 assault marines 13 inches away from a hormagaunt brood was a bad idea)

3. You have a DREADNAUGHT Why isn't it fighting off his MC's??

3.5 (after dreadnaught gets killed by 5 penetrating hits) Thats what you get for expecting a dreadnaught to fight off a monstrous creature!

Alright, 1 was stupid. However, 2 was actually not bad advice because Hormagaunts have Fleet and a 12" charge range. 3 is correct and 3.5 is just bad luck. The Dread is going to demolish Carnifexi, but get eaten by Hive Tyrants.

Sounds like a really "fun" guy to play against.

Fleet and Fast charge are exactly why i didn't want to end my movement 13' away, those assault marines are quite pricey, especially with blood angels.

In addition, 3 was a winged tyrant statted for CC, I had originally moved the assault marines (with 3 plasma pistols and a powerfist) into shooting/assaulting range of the tyrant, but then quotes 2 & 3 happened.

Maybe that helps explain why I thought my partner was being ridiculous.

The oddest I've seen in person was "Is three Basilisks in 1850 even possible?" Yeah, I haven't been playing long.

I went to the local GW shop to find a couple pickup games. One of the regulars there accepted, and we rolled up a mission. Dawn of war deployment, I put down a rhino with tactical squad very close to objectives to try and deny him optimal places to deploy. I then pass the deployment turn to him.

He starts putting down a chimera with a squad inside. Then he starts putting down a HWS, then an infantry squad. I ask him why he is putting so much on the table, and he says its all from the FOC slot. I inform him only 2 units, not 2 FOC slots.

We end up discussing it, and i show him the rule. He gives me a confused look, and goes to consult a redshirt. The redshirt comes over and reports its FOC slots that can be deployed. I show him the rule, and he goes to check with the manager. They both come back, and the manager says that I was right. Apparently everyone there had been doing it wrong since 5th edition came out.

This happened 3 weeks ago.

8. where, in the rule book does it say you can gain a "cover save"

"My Vindicator is more than half covered by it's big dozer plow thing, how do I not get a 4+ cover save from the hull being obscured?"

"Didn't you know Calgar has a 2+ armour save and a 2+ invulnerable save?"

"Thousand Sons don't get invulnerable saves against force weapons because all they are are souls!"

"How do your Daemons get a invulnerable save against Grey Knights?"

"Why can't my Whirlwind fire krak missiles? They are missiles after all?"
