I cant decide which one of the Land Raider Variants i would want.

At my FLGS People are telling me to get a crusader, however i keep hearing on the Internet i should get a vanilla land raider.

Thoughts?

What SPARKEYG said. If you're fighting MEQ's, a Redeemer.
If Horde, Crusader.
However, if you're just moving stuff with it, a Vanilla should be fine.

Well, I Fight a pretty good variety of things.
I guess, i want a transport/gun platform. But i want to be able to take care of vehicles well.

My 1000 point list would revolve around.
Tac Squad in Rhino
Captain
Dread in Drop Pod
And 5 Terminators in A LR of some type.

Edit: Also, one of my more frequent opponents has a crusader. If that has any meaning.

Crusaders are a better choice for moving stuff around because

1) they can move 6" and fire ALL of its guns

2) they have a higher transport capacity

Godhammer LRs are heavy gun platforms that sit in your back field behind light cover and snipe vehicles and infantry because

1) they have a very long range

2) they can't bring all of their guns to bear if they are close up to the target

Redeemers are a poor choice of LR because

1) they can't move and fire all guns

2) they MUST move to get into optimum range

3) they can't get maximum use out of the 2 templates from the side sponsons

There isn't anything wrong with any choice really, Look at the 3 variants and decide which can have the most positive impact on your list. I like the basic Landraider the most.

Get one and then pick up the weapon's pack and magnetize the whole thing. That way you can have it all. I've heard that the Flamestorms are hard to get magnetized.

Don't forget that you can tack on a MultiMelta to any of the Land Raider variants. At one shot, it's not a wonderful anti-tank choice, but it's good enough to keep your opponent honest.

Personally I prefer the Crusader or Redeemer, but if you need some long range AT to blow up some transports yo can't go wrong with the Vanilla.

Also don't buy the Land Raider Terminus Ultra!
IT SUCKS!
I've always had it blow up.
Right now i'm making it into a Phobus land raider and a Crusader Varaint which i'm going to buy.

i suggest Crusader as it happens to often that the Redeemr blows up before it can reach its targets.

@ Asherian comm: Just because you have had bad luck with dosen't mean it sucks

Terminus's are Appoc or by permission only BTW, so he probably won't get one for awhile

Opponents blow up Terminus LRs because it is a threat. 5 Lascannons(3 of which are TL) need i say more

Crusaders are a good starter LR. they can take out those pesky Ork or Nid hordes that many new players find difficult to stop. they have a larger transport cap and they can take a Multi-melta if you absolutly have to pop tanks.

Godhammer LRs are 2nd in my book. pop tanks from across the board and mow down infantry.

Redeemers are a good idea, but bad in practice. 2 short ranged primary weapons. Close range LRs have to keep moving to avoid MCs and PFs from hurting them. Redeemers can't fire all their weapons and move 6", Crusaders can.

Actually, Flamestorms can be taken on Dreads in Apoc, but I digress.

I like the Godhammer for the simple reason that you're already going to be carrying Terminators: what more anti-infantry do you need? The Godhammer can move and fire its two TL-Lascannons, and once it comes 12" it switches from one of the Lascannons to the Multi-Melta. It will kill that transport, and the Terminators will kill its cargo.

sorry but there is a massive flaw with the Terminus!
Also sorry about miss pronouncing the Phobos at the time i didn't remember the name of the Land Raider.
But i have to say the crusader is good for alot of stuff. the only thing that would be awesome was if their was an assualt cannon varriant with 4 twinlinked assualt cannons and a lascannon on top of the land raider XD. That would be uber.

If you want to use it for your Terminators then the Redeemer is the one to go with, there is not many things that don't fear those Inferno Cannons.
And if you are worried about Anti-Tank or the Template Range on the tank buy a Muli-Melta for it.

Now you have many choices, let us know how it turned out

Well as a frequent opponent of the emperor's second best. I always fear the basic land raider the most. Those lascannons always seem to roll 6's against my russes. Crusaders however make me scared for whats inside of them (namely 8 terminators). A crusader without troops or a redeemer are fairly low on my threat assessment. Sure kill my guardsmen, let me feed you more just leave my tanks alone

It depends entirely on which army you fight most often, if you have a close friend who plays SM, CSM, or tau, get a normal Land Raider, with any type of swarm army, use a LRC , The Redeemer is best for assault armies such as orks or 'Nids, maybe even CSM. LRC is better for guard.

They all have their uses, just plan accordingly. I personally use a LRC no matter what I'm fighting, most adaptable if you ask me, as long as you take a MM as an upgade.

Slap a MM on the top, with the machine spirit rule, you can shoot close tanks while firing at infantry with the other weapons.

I have multiple of all 3 variants, the key to Land Raiders is not what weapons they have, but what unit you are transporting.

Big deathstar unit of termies with an IC? Crusader, you need the extra capacity

Decent sized unit of termies, or an assaulty unit, maybe honor guard or command squad with an IC? Redeemer. flamestorm cannons are infinitely better than Hurricane Bolters, and its a bit cheaper, which is a nice bonus.

Min sized scoring unit? basic tacticals? Godhammer. Sit back at max range and plink your enemy with lascannons with little fear of being shifted off an objective.

It stands that the Redeemer is way better as a gun platform than the Crusader for a couple of simple reasons.... the most common army is MEQ. the flamestorm is S6, AP3, ignores cover: MEQ die on 2+ with no saves at all. I've wiped out 10 man squads with a single cannon shot in one turn (rolled up 12, angled for the shot and nuked them)

The Crusader is the best transport simply because it has the highest transport capacity, for this reason its my favorite of the 3 options. extra bolter shots from only moving 6 is nothing special really though, dont move 6 when you should be moving 12 to get in the opponents face

Godhammer tends to be the most durable because it doesnt need to be in your opponents face to do its job, I rarely field these because I play an aggresive space wolf assaulty army. I can see them being better for a gunline marine army, but in that case I would rather spend the points on things with more punch than 2 lascannons.

if a redeemer, crusader, or godhammer moves farther than 6" it can only shoot one gun, whats better? a twin linked lascannon, 3 twin linked bolters, or a Flamestorm cannon?

Flamestorm.

turn 1 and 2 will most likely be spent moving 12" forward, after that point they have usually disgorged their contents, and then their only purpose is to blast nearby enemies. talk to your opponents, see what they fear more, a S6 AP3 Ignores cover weapon that auto-hits, or a few twin linked shots at S4 AP5?

but it begs repeating, a land raider is a transport first, and a gun platform second, I would get the Crusader, but the Redeemer is still excellent choice.

Also good for taking on light armor and when over 12' puts out more shots than the hurricane bolters. I suppose that argument is also true for the flamestorm cannon.

and a twin linked assault cannon is actually more likely to penetrate all armor values except for AV 12 than a twin-linked lascannon.

yes, even AV14.

I don't have and have never used a Redeemer, but have seen them in action and they tend to be targeted especially because of the flamestorm cannons. they will be shot at with an increased urgency then any other pattern.

MEQs will put every lascannon they have into the Redeemer.

LRs strength lies in the fact that most enemies fear what is inside(or what might be inside) rather then fear the actual tank. Redeemers add to that by becoming Dangerous in and of themselves.

that can be a good thing until you get immobilized half way across and find nothing in range of the weapon that made you take in the first place

Vanilla raiders don't really lose usefulness from immobilazation and Crusaders only slightly less so.

Point is: one immobilization on a Redeemer makes it useless

not quite, Area denial. the enemy still cant get close to them, and the Assault Cannon/Multimelta still have a 24" range, like the Crusader.

Area denial Yes, but its a small area and a target that can't really shoot back, so it can either be ignored or shot from a safe distance till dead.

maximum range on the redeemers cannons is about 11" (8" template + 3" gun mount, assuming it can swivel) approach with Melta gun from the side or rear adn it goes pop

I see the Redeemer as a defensive tank. put it in cover or out of LOS near an objective and it performs a similer role to the Vindicator. come here and die
