It makes the highlighting more believable. I'm debating advising a wash, so I'll save that until you have pics of the entire model drybrushed.

great! eyes need a bit of work. I'd advise you to repaint them black then simply add a thin line of red.

I ran out of chaos black so I am at a handicap with not being able to do that. The store is 3 hours away. I find the drybrushing makes it look really dirty and chalky

:Edit: Did not notice a second page so I missed a whole bunch of comments on the dry brushing lol. I re-painted him solid and took him apart. Im going to re-do the dry brushing with a little more control.

i really like your paint scheme on the marines, its a breath of fresh air to me since all i see in my area is the same old colours of blue, green, yellow and red, oh and a few blacks

Next time you go to your game store pick up chaos back and the blue wash the wash will help tone down the dusty look. Looks good for a beginner keep it up.

Looking at photos that are very large or close of models with lots of flat/smooth spaces (ie space marines), that have been drybrushed can overstate a natural drybrushing 'chalky' effect.

Add the fact you have used two strong colours (dark blue with ice blue drybrushing), and she can look a little dusty - but still have a nice effect on the tabletop.

Yeh I agree. as well since it is a single model I should probably get a group of them painted in the same fashion so I can see what a group effect looks like

Okay so I tried two different approaches to the model, one is straight midnight blue with ice blue dry-brush and the other is the same with a midnight blue wash

I was thinking that I should abandon highlights of any sorts and just go for clean flat colours

I really, REALLY like the one on the right. That seems to give itself its own highlights, and once you get better and begin to experiment again, I could easily see realistic damage on that.

Here is the main thing.

When putting on the primer it must be done correctly. If done too thick it will look like crap. And don't just use any primer. Make sure it's for plastic. If you use something else it will look like crap.

I liked the dry brush on the assault jump pack but you ended doing too much on the legs that you have. However, if you took the ones on the left and then added the wash to them you might end up with a nice looking weathers armour. Which would look good.

I really do think you need to buy new leaders and try the drybrush with the ink. It will be better in the end.

Also another thing is that your weapons should never have the color of your armour. I always use a chrome color and then add a crimson red to all the parts that look like the casing of the gun. It ends up looking great. Right now it's hard to tell what is armour or gun.

If you want to use drybrushing as a highlighting technique, remember that you can go back and re-flatten flat areas with the base colour leaving a thin band of drybrushedness around the plate edge.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I hope no one thought I had abandoned them My commander has been repainted and I must admit that using micron pens for detail work is amazing simple and efficient. The black detail work still needs some touching up but overall I am happy with how he came out
