I could think of plenty of reasons. If a unit is stuck in a sandstorm where visibility is severely limited, they could grab the proceeding marine`s bar in order to stick close to one another. Extra equipment and supplies could be tied to it, and during extremely intense storms, quakes, or attacks from large beasts, they could use the bar to tie the marines down to stop them from being thrown around.

Ahh I see. Makes a lot of sense now. Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the comments guys.Yes the eyes and stomachs and random other things are blue. Also the conversions are brown-stuff, like Ramos Asura said. Actually I mix Aves Fixit with it cuz it makes it more brittle I think.

@r3n3g8b0y - Those helmets are a pain, glad you like them. Actually a lot of the marines will have regular packs cuz it is a pain to convert them all.

@TempusCorvus - Hehe, actually I'm thinking of cooking up some daemonhunter allies and assassins would fit the stilsuit deal nicely.

@Sarnath - Got a predator for christmas!

@Fafnir - Oh! That is why my SM have handlebars! Thanks! Haha.

Btw just magnetized the bases. Got a lovely shipment of clear bases (to tell you the truth, I never liked the idea of basing, so I got clear bases - makes them feel more like action figures than statues). That way the figures will fit in on any game table. There are neodymium (sp?) magnets below each foot.

@NuggzTheNinja - Yes indeedy, I got a pic of a couple of bad boyz for ya.

wow is still barely describing all of this. I especially love the clear bases.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Beautiful work.

I spotted these turbaned heads with gas masks recently (been thinking about getting some for my Inquisitorial Stormtroopers project) & thought you might want to grab some as a variation:

Those are really interesting bases, was it hard to drill the holes for the magnets? Did you pin the marines, or will they simple break off (looks like a rather non-porous surface, can't be too good of a bond). And where did you get them?

The guys with the head-wraps look good.

Two questions:

A) Where the hell did you find those bases? I'd love to use them for an army (though my only concern would be finding them at the appropriate size

B) How are you doing the dirty white/bone/stone color? So far your army is exactly what I was looking for in terms of color scheme for an army of my own.

Amazing work so far

Whoa, really flattered by the compliments. Thanks guys!

@Valhallan42nd - thanks! What is osl?

@Ian Sturrock - Ooo nice heads - I think i might try that!

@jabbakahut - Damn, why didnt I think of that. Hopefully what i did will be okay; I sanded both surfaces with a grainy grit sandpaper then superglued.

@bhsman -
A) Bases here: http://www.litkoaero.com/page/LAI/CUSTOM_BASES

B) Testors model master acryl (tmma) Sand - basic color
tmma sand + dark earth - darker tones
tmma euro grey + gw bestial brown - lines

Another two questions, if you would:

A) What were the exact specifications you gave them for the bases?

B) Would you be so kind as to do a step-by-step with your paintscheme if it's not too much trouble?

Thanks for the earlier replies.

Love the bases and the concept. Can you let me know two things? Are the bases magnetized in the sense that the mini's come off of the bases or do the bases just stick to metal. Also how did you glue the minis/magnets into the bases without fogging up the bases (what material are the bases made of?) Keep up the good work.

How did you do the head wraps? I've tried to do some by folding a large piece of greenstuff like you would a real shemagh but it didn't look as nice.

This is looking really great. And thanks for the link for the clear bases.

I like the fluff of the army and the conversions are looking top notch.

How is the brown stuff in comparison to the green stuff? Is it just a different color or are there workability differences to it?

Keep up the great work.

Cheers

OMG I just stumbled upon these Space Marines, I must admit that they're definitely AWESOME!!!

The amount of additional gear clearly sets them as hardened veterans, and the colour scheme's really fantastic!!!

Are there actually little lights in there, or did you just paint them to look like that? Either way, they look awesome.

I like the clear bases, and I'm actually suprised that I haven't seen more people doing that. Probably just because there's not much point getting new bases when they come with perfectly good ones. Except in this case.

Please tell me you're going to make a Sandworm.

And come to think of it, Epidemius would make a pretty good Baron Harkonnen.

@bhsman

A) What were the exact specifications you gave them for the bases?
3mm Clear Acrylic (1/8th inch), 25mm diameter, and put "No" for a flight base.
B) Would you be so kind as to do a step-by-step with your paintscheme if it's not too much trouble?
Okay!I'll do a step-by-step as I work on the last 4 tactical marines in the squad. No problem!

@bobx66 - The bases stick to metal. I like the idea of the sticking to metal. I stuck them on the refrigerator for fun last week! Also, you don't see much fogging where I glued the bases to the feet because I used just enough glue to cover the under surface of the foot (i.e. not much overflow).

@MasterSlowPoke - I did fold a large piece of putty over the head to make the shemagh and turban. Do you have a color shaper like the "Flat Chisel" one shown here http://www.dickblick.com/products/colour-shapers-tools/ ? What I basically do is create fold lines using the edge of that tool. I can put up a short tutorial to help you later on.

@paulguise - Thanks! Actually to tell you the truth, I've never used green stuff. I heard it stays tacky and doesn't really respond to sanding well so I decided not to use it. I like to sand the things I sculpt because sometimes it is just easier that way. There is no reason to always do things the hard way - although a lot of us do it that way anyways (we love the challenge).

@Yggdrasil, Reecius - Thanks very much!

@Andaroo - Yay! I didn't know people actually read the naratives! Thanks for reading!

@TempusCorvus - The eyes are painted that way, thanks for the compliment. Btw, I don't think I'll be making a sandworm hehe.

@Jihallah - Thanks, I'm going to need that encouragement for the next squad haha.

Here are the last 4 of the tac squad. The brown is brown stuff, the black are pockets that I casted. I was planning on primering them tonight but I'm kinda sleepy now. As per bhsman's request, I will provide a description of my process as I go along. I was going to take a pic of my sniper scout squad but I'm too sleepy to do that too.

Sergeant Caleb (the rightmost figure) - Be focused so that your bolter does not miss its mark, be careful that you do not turn your face away from the enemy, be wary lest you lose any hint of ferocity in your fist because any less will bring you fear - delivered by the hands of our leader, Brother Caleb.

Weapons Specialist (second from the right) - Even without his eyesight and relying on technology to "see" the battlefield, he still performs better as the weapons specialist than any other in the squad.
This marine can use any special weapon and there are magnets attached at the wrist of on hand and at the palm at the other. I will just use this guy to swap the special weapons.

Happy New Years! Thanks for the responses everyone! I'm flattered by the comments.

@Asherian Command - I just modify the original SM heads with brown kneadatite. I'll let you know if I get any ideas about a jungle army, but I'd definitely like to see some multicam color scheme.

Okay so it took me a while to get back to the painting. There are so many distractions during the holidays. Here is the progress on my tactical marines so far.

1. I first painted the darker shade of armor on the pieces. It is a mix of Testors Model Master Acryl "Sand" and "Dark Earth".

2. I airbrushed some zenithal lighting over the pieces with "Sand". You can blend lighting in, but it takes a longer time to do that. I wish I had made the darker shade more dark so that there would be a greater contrast between lit surfaces and surfaces in the shadows, but I'll save that for a different squad.

Image that shows the zenithal lighting...

Image that has truer color...
