Why care?
I personally think it was done as a distraction. This would make people, who like to complain about GW on a regular basis, have an easy target and maybe miss something else.
They know that a lot of people simply complain as a rule.
They know some people will actively look for something to complain about instead of simply enjoying the game.
They know that some people will cry " GW apologist!" about any person making statements like mine.
So they just give their customers what they want....something utterly inconsequential to bicker/cry/whine/complain about.
And it worked too, I guess.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.
Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

I honestly think it had a shooting attack, then they removed it, but left the Ballistic Skill in place. Typical 'Warwick Kincaid' style moment there for ol' Arby.

Gretchin have BS for 3 reasons
A)They have Grot Blastas
B)They man all Ork gun emplacements
C)They run the Killa Kans. Since regular grots don't hop into Kans in-game this is completely fluffy, but there is no reason not to include it in the rules.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.

Well considering it's damn near an entirely defensive creature, I've been using it to man interceptor guns in planetstrike. It can do that while still giving it's poison "what do you mean my boyz get no assault bonus +1 attacks" goodness.

Maybe the BS4 is because there will be a Dark Eldar psychic power which requires the target to have a BS? I mean, surely the secrets hidden within the Dark Eldar codex is the only reason...

Yes. And since the venomthrope's miasma goes outside of embarked buildings (like the Big Mek's KFF) that makes venomthropes pretty hilarious for defending in Planetstrike.
