Never played warhammer before. Started this project after getting sucked into it by a friend that I work with; that and I have an ungodly ammount of free time that I need to fill to keep my sanity. The premise behind it was ancient buildings constructed on top of giant rock formations inspired by a picture from a Codex I browsed through. I went into it blind not knowing a thing, and I emerged with big decorated foam chunks and still not knowing much.

Sugguestions are much appreciated about what can be improved/added/changed/etc.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

It all began from big slabs of pink foam glued together and carved with a razor knife. One section a landing pad, another a spiraling staircase with a SAM site, and the third an ATC building with a satelite dish on top. From here I'll just let the picture speak for themselves.

What type of foam is this?

It's insulation foam, like reecius said. You can get it at any hardware store, in varying thicknesses.

I have never done anything like this before. That being said, I have in the recent past done alot of google searches, looked at forums for ideas, etc. I by no means went into this completely blind; however, I have definitely wasted time doing things the wrong way and had to go back and correct something later.

Another small update. Had a busy week and slept most of the day; didn't have much time to work on this massive project. Question: has anyone seen barrels without the 2 (ribs?) that didn't look like complete garbage?? I really don't feel like making them for all 12 barrels... Maybe I'll run to a hardware store and just buy something that already looks like barrels with them on.

Another update. Getting really close to finishing it up; fine detail sure is taking a massive ammount of time though. Right now what I have planned before I call it finished is: coloring the flames on the barrels red, adding strands of rope around groups of barrels, and finishing painting detail on various things (mostly weathering).

Anyone have any thoughts to help bring it all together a little better in addition to the barrels and generator I'm adding?
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thinking of what to add takes 10x longer than actually making it...

Sand bags near the 'control room' thing would be pretty kool looking. As well sand bags in the areas where the Scaffolding(right word) leads on to bigger, more open platforms. This would give it a sort of realistic and segmental defensive set up(e.g. IG defending against enemies would NOT take cover. They'd have barriers at certain intervals to help slow enemies storming the base)

Does anyone know off hand a good way to make sandbags in mass? I suppose I could look up how to make a mold and do it that route. Or perhaps I'll just try cutting bricks of foam and smashing them around the edges to give the effect...

Edit- Scratch that. The foam worked perfectly; it's even bendable which gives me 100% control over what way it's laying or how it meshes with the bags below it. It's just going a massive ammount of time. HAHA

Update just to ask a question. From the picture below I need criticism on both the barrel and sandbag placement. Want to get a few other opinions before I start glueing things down.

The sandbags have come out really well. I'd suggest maybe arranging them as a [ rather than a ( to block off the walkways.

Those sandbags look pretty damn cool.

I hope that you are not sticking any of these decorations on, so you can move them around for a bit of variation between games.

Perhaps a few rifle racks at key defensive points, some crates of grenades. If the structure is built knowing it will come under siege, unless the commander is a fool there will be a large stockpile of munitions. (Since resupplies mid fire fight are tricky business.
What you should be considering is "What is usually laying around where infantry congregate?"
I assume that since you've not included any sort of barracks/lodging area within the structure, that the infantry not on watch sleep elsewhere. This being said, you don't really need to include a whole lot of personal items, but a few bedrolls in some sheltered corners would add a human element to it. Its not much of a strech of the imagination that when 2 guardsmen are on watch duty, that one would nap while the other watches, napping in shifts to maintain alertness. Also, rations, perhaps some intact and packaging for ones that have been consumed.
Another thing to consider is regarding weapon emplacements. We all know that lasguns don't eject cartridges (lasers, duh), but the IG still use many weapons that do. (Heavy Bolters, stubbers, autocannons, grenade launchers, etc). Fret not, spent casings are often relatively simple to create using small diameter metal tubing. Just block off one end.

I had a feeling that my experience doing 1/35th scale armor/infantry/dioramas would come in handy when starting WH40k.
Micro-detailing can be tedious, but man are the results epic. Just make sure should you decide to add weapon racks, ammo crates and the like, that you don't cement them down. It'd be a bloody shame for this beautiful project of yours to be completely static and not have any possibility for variation in defensive setups.

Some really beautiful terrain here mate. for little extra's how about a shuttle or runabout as a custom objective. Friendly force have to move a VIP through the instillation and to the shuttle to gain a victory. Intruders obviously need to intercept the VIP. Bare bones really but could work out to a nice little feature.

Great work. I agree, try to keep some of it movable for variation. I think all the barrels should be up off the landing platform - not too appealing for an incoming Valkerie pilot. The sandbags look great - was that really just the foam that you cut and then squeezed into sandbag shape?

Yes, the sandbags are indeed just blocks of foam; however, the edges were rounded off with a kife instead of smashing them into corners.

Small update on what will probably be the last of the large fine detail items. Turrets will remain movable. Some of the boxes will be open with hand grenades visible in them.

Sandbags are finished, and I'm pleased with how they look. Simple, yet affective when placed on the terrain. Perhaps they might look a little better if my painting skills weren't lacking, but beggers can't be choosers.
