..I'm finding Guardsman to be a bit of a chore as well, but as I'm making a Praetorian force consisting of OOP minis,I don't find myself buried in unpainted models.
I am attempting to paint each individual guardsman to "above table top standards",so the process can become quite taxing at times, but as a "labour of love" I endure it.

Amen to that, the only way I made it through painting my entire Ork army was to develop an "assembly line" mentality,I'd set up 10 or so minis, base coat all the models skin, move on to uniforms/armour,dry brush skin, wash, highlight ..etc,etc ..add infinitum.
Even using this process it still took me over a year to fully "complete" everything.

Spray cans are your friend here, a quick blast and anything is undercoated completely.
If it's tanks you're doing, even easier as you've only got to paint the details; if it's infantry it's a case of lightest colour goes onto undercoat first: so for a guards squad, for example, spray the lot in your base colour of choice, add a dab of flesh colour on faces and hands, paint webbing and weapons, boots and gaiters, job done.
Failing eyesight is my excuse for not doing eyes, but I'd argue that if you've seen real soldiers ready for battle--covered in cam cream, dust, cordite residue, blood and general sweat and grime--you aren't going to see eyes more than 3 feet away. As a gamer you're likely to be about 3-4 feet from any model, in scale to a guardsman that's probably about 1/4 mile!

Yes,I'd have to agree.
While I honestly love the painting aspect of the hobby, the repetitiveness of painting up 120+boyz (not including Nobz,Burnaz, etc) did become a bit..maddening.
I would imagine the same is true for any "horde" army.
Atleast with Boyz theres some variety in the models with the details and stuff. Now nids have to be a nightmare to paint.
*Ouch*..very true...I can understand why "dipping" has become so popular with alot of Nid players.
Dipping eh....... i think you my good sir just saved my sanity

Old style Dark Eldar Raiders. I don't know what it is, but I've always drug my feet when it came time to paint them. I'll happily paint large quantities of infantry, such as the 100-odd Boyz for my girlfriends Deffskulls, or the 80 or so DE Warriors and Wyches I have about.
I'd rather paint a unit of 30 Boyz than another old raider. I'll never understand why, they're simple models and should be a nice break, but I never let my DE include more than 6 (Including Ravagers) just because I refused to paint another one.

Same ones, over and over, like termagants, is incredibly boring. But what really annoy me is tyranid weapons. My theme is black, all over basically (Aliens, Giger). What to do with weapons if you want the slightest difference between body and weapon?

I love Orks but AOBR boys are really, really boring to paint. Same goes for the AOBR marines, but these are at least painted much faster.
Lootas are hard to paint because the model is very complex, but they are worth it!

While I will agree, Ill also add...play a list that isnt horde based. You could do speed freaks if you like building & painting vehicles. Im going with a dred mob type list...2 big meks, 5 deff dreads ( 2 count as troop bc of meks), backed by some nobz, kommandos, maybe some flash gits. Also setting up for an alternate with a boss and nobz replace 1 mek and dred. Now Im not saying this list will work on the field, wont know till I try it, but it gets some Orks into battle without painting huge numbers of them.
As others have mentioned easy way to do nids is dip. Pick a base color, maybe another for shell/carapace areas, teeth/claws/eyes, then dip. Then whatever basing you prefer. Now mind you, most people dont actually dip the miniature in the shading, they brush it on.

As all other painters: any unfunny models who will "fill the army", dont have that much importance/details and will be repeated a dozen times for squad...
Thats why i think Space Marines are fun to paint: the common models are easy to paint in bunches (holy spray). The "special models" have lots of nice details, and will take hours of fun to paint...
(and that is too why i will never have a Orkz army, but will have a lot of their elite units)
|

Just finished a squad of sanguinary guard...well I shouldnt say finished, because they will ultimately be NMM but I onlt painted the base coat. Just painting the base coat was a chore. The worst part about them is painting the wings. I wanted them to look brilliant, so I chose to blend each feather at a time. different tones on the wings, it just became a nightmare. Took me over a month to finish 1 5-man squad. Wont ever paint them again :( pain....in....the.....arse!
