How long do you think you'll continue with the hobby?
It will keep me amused for another year or so
I think there's at least another 5-10 years fun to be had
I'm here for the long haul, ask me again in 20 years
I'll keep going until they stop making war gaming products
I've no idea

I have no idea. Until I get bored or have better things to do with my time, I guess. I enjoy the hobby, so have no real reason to stop just yet.

Been playing since I was 16, 42 now. So long haul, I think.

I have diverted into other things as well, like learning to play bass guitar, but I always come back after a break for my other obsessions.

I got into this hobby not too long ago, and it was as much to connect and spend time with my teenaged son. We had fun discussing strategy and painting. The emphasis was more on the hobby side, but gaming was still fun. He is now in college so I don't know if he will stay with it, but I figure I will.

As I am 45, I see myself continuing to do the hobby side because it is something you can set aside for a while then pick back up when the spirit moves you!

I suspect I will be at it for many, many years to come. I have actually stepped back from a lot of my hobbies (mostly SCA fighting) because I don't have the time or my wife doesn't want to be drug along but doesn't want to be alone. Not to mention the fact that I have a hard time with connecting to light social interaction, and have low grade social anxiety disorder when dealing with new people. Painting, on the other hand, I can do as I see fit, I don't have to actually associate with other people, and I feel a lot of personal accomplishment when I pull off a really nice paint job etc.
As to gaming, that has waxed and waned along with my free time and the free time of my friends, but with all these models floating about my house, it is unlikely I will ever go full-painter Plus, being able to talk to people about models, games and rules (ie. specific topics) is about the only way I can really connect and feel comfortable dealing with new people, so it helps offset my general desire to stay locked in my house

The hobby?

Are we taliking about GW's appropriation of the term or general wargaming?

If the latter, another 30-35 years (I've already put 25 into it).

If the former, maybe another 5 years.

And in that case, there WILL be other SF miniatures games that will come along that I will be able to use my stuff in.
All will be as it was before.

History doesn't repeat, it just has a tendency to echo.

Dabbled a bit in historical wargaming before GW became interesting to me. I'll stick with it as long as the models and fluff are fun. After that... who knows?

I started reading about the lore and stuff when Dawn of War: Dark Crusade came out for the PC. So, around 2006. I was 30 years old. My first 40K purchase was Assault on Black Reach, which was mid 2008: I was 32. Friday was my 34th birthday. Although I am intrigued yet with the lore, I virtually never actually play the tabletop game, despite spending tons on various plastic men of all kinds. I'm already starting to wonder if maybe I'm not a little too old for this. How long will I spend money I don't really have on plastic crap I don't really need for a game I don't really play?

I do love converting models, though.

You've got to get out there! I'd been accumulating models and never actually playing for ten years up until this summer. I made a concerted effort to get stuff painted and I've played at least once a month for the last few months, mostly at the independent FLGS which is a more mature crowd than the nearest GW.

Last weekend I got asked to an invitational to the GW store to take part in a monster game. 5 of us each had 2,000 points of Blood Angels, the opposing side had 10,000 points of necrons. In my rush to get ready, I didn't get to finish the paintwork on Corbulo, so he was one of exactly TWO unfinished models on the table. I can't believe I didn't take a camera with me. I think we narrowly won, but I couldn't swear to it...

Whatever the other flaws of 40K, finding a game with a more-or-less human opponent shouldn't be too hard.

I notice you've got more than one army - I think you might be surprised how many of your non-gaming friends would be interested to give it a go. Just do 500 points to start and go from there...

Not meant to be a lecture, sorry if that's how it reads!

Going strong after 15 years and I can't see myself actuall stopping! i'm kind of excited to see what GW will do over the next 20 years to keep me interested in the hobby, i'm sure i'll have the occasional lull in my gaming and painting life but i'll always come back to it as a great bit of creative and personal freedom!

Played D&D a handfull of times around 1991 or 1992. Got Battlemasters around 1992 and then finally started 40k somewhere between 1996 and 1997. Been going ever since and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

I've also branched into boardgames (Settlers of Catan, Small World, Race for the Galaxy, etc...) over the last few years. I've waxed and waned in my participation and haven't really played a game for a long time, but I have two little girls (ages 2 and 1.5 months) so that's taken a lot of my time. Once they get a little older I hope to get more active again.

For me as long as I'm inspired I'll keep buying and sculpting. Been into the hobby more years than I've been out of it now.

What I anticipate will change for me is that I currently spend a lot of time thinking about the hobby and posting on forums. 5-10 years from now I doubt I'll want to still be doing this and will spend a lot more time building/painting.

I started playing with toy soldiers around the end of the 70's, and as I'm still doing so i don't see there being an end in sight. TBH even if I never bought another mini I'd still be converting and painting my current stock well into my old age. I've probably played less than a handful of games since Rogue Trader days, but the modelling/painting side of things will always hold my interest.

I think this is probably closer to the truth as far as I am concerned. Even if I were to put a freeze on buying new/used stuff, I would still have enough that needed painting/remodelling to last me a lifetime.

I will stop buying GW models at the point where they go beyond what I can afford to pay but seeing as I already have eight or nine armies I will probably keep on playing for as long as I get pleasure from it. As my kids get older if they get into it that will probably stimulate me even more to continue.

Outstanding! I'll look for you on the field!

I agree, I wanted to say ask me agian in 20 years or as long as they keep making wargames, I didn't know which was suppose to be longer, but really, I'll be wargaming even if I have to make my own stuff, I have done plenty of that, I remember how much more necessary it was in the old days, and while I absolutely relish a full figure line like GW provides I also remember the 70s and 80s where wargaming had to be cobbled together from a variety of small time manufacturers and often foreign components and homebrew rules! Should the industry ever decline somehow I would suspect the home brew stuff would have a renaissance.
