@ Lipsdapips- Thanks! The set is from Scibor Minis- the set itself comes with that headdress, another version, plus a couple of Egyptian-theme eye shield… thingies for detailing.
Love your conversions mate, hope to see more soon from ya
@Armorum Ferrum- Thanks a lot! My plan was to start small w/ the conversion, and go up. I still have more squad leaders along with the single characters and armor.
Interesting...

**Mini-Update**
Welcome back and thanks for the continued interest in my Sons! This past Memorial Day weekend was supposed to be paint-focused 3 days… but lots of rain and drinking (not in combination) kinda killed the drive for it. I did however, primer and color the first three.
Remember how I said I’d do the bases separately? I lied. It was much easier to manipulate the miniatures set all together. The bases will be much more difficult to complete, but not impossible with the legs in the way.
I started out with a base of really watered down Mecharite Red and brown (forget which one at the moment), and several layers to get a smooth coat. I also picked up VA Scarlet Red and did some zenithal highlights on the first three guinea pigs.
The other two fully base-coated and highlighted. I’m also considering going to almost orange in terms of highlights… haven’t fully decided, but if so, it’ll be done with a standard brush and not an airbrush.
Since I can’t brush straight gold onto red… I’m stuck repainting certain areas that will be gold with SW Grey. I know the standard marines have the gold helmets and white trim on their shoulderpads. I’ve decided that my guys will be fully gold- shoulderpads and all. The white will still be present on the clothing they’ve got on them.
Anyways, I’m a bit farther on that I am on these photos. I’ve also got a couple of GK and Sang-Guard bits from my cousin Z when he stopped by for our yakiniku party. He’ll be coming over again this week to pass over the Thousand Sons novel (whoo hoo!) and help me figure some sort of a list- to help with future purchases. I've been wanting to write some fluff about these guys as I did about my Amazing =I= Men, but I want a look at the established universe before going too far off-track.
And as they're going to be GKs, the CC power-khopeshs are on order from Kromlech EU (along with some bigger stave weapons). For these guys who are already started, I'll paint the weapons separately and attach them later!
Thanks for stopping by! Comments/constructive critiques always welcome!

Thanks GiraffeX! They fit rather well, and I've got a pretty good impression of Scibor's stuff from their bases and their extras- very good quality. With minor filing of the Scibor headress and the MarkIII helmet (ear nubs and a bit of the wire headband), it fit perfectly.
I like your take on the Thousand Sons too- the reversed post-Rubric colorscheme looks really good with the wings!

Hey Kepora- thanks for the tip. I think I've got a gold that works for me- lighter-silvery, rather than a yellowish. I'll put up the update in a little bit- Lemme know what you think and stay tuned!

First Son Finished…? Now… fix it.
Welcome back to another installment! I was supposed to finish “greying out” all the areas that were supposed to be red, but I got bored of that and decided to try and finish one of the troops, Quick Man. The good news was, after base-coating, high-lighting, and greying out, finishing them is relatively easy… at least, so I hope. Here are the results, both good and bad on my very first Pre-Heresy Thousand Son.
Good Points- I like the red color, and the gold is closer to the first picture on my blog, which is what I’m going for.
Bad Points- … well, you’ll see below.
Here he is in his semi-finished glory. I’ve still got clean-up work to do on him, final highlights/washes for the gold, as well as finishing up the beetle on his belt. I was feeling so good… I decided to go and screw the model up.
I’m a big fan of battle damage, but I really screwed the pooch on this one.
First, it had been a while, and I didn’t plan it properly enough- did I want fresh off the assembly line 1K sons, or battle-worn ones? Or something in between. SO… what I came out with was a Thousand Son looking like he got into a fight with someone armed with a salt-rock shotgun. The battle damage isn’t convincing… yup. Time for a repaint.
Anyways, that’s it for now. I have more work and pics coming tonight, fixing this fool as well as getting the other two guys. Kromlech blades/glaives are on order as well and should be arriving June 10-17. Also starting to consider several models for a leader-type model I can GS into a fitting commander. Before we end, a couple of questions for you all…
Should I do battle damage? Or totally fresh Sons w/ barely a scrape on them?
Any comments/constructive critiques about the color choices? Any ideas to make them better?
As always, thanks for stopping by the OTSOSaaT blog!

Keep them fresh for now and add a little battle damage each time they participate in a memorable game.... a bit like a medal or badge of honour. That way particularly useful or units which perform well will look more like the veterans that they are.

veritechc wrote:I second this idea. I see the Thousand Sons as a Chapter at their zenith. As such they should have perfectly kept armor unless they have been on a campaign for a while.
Well-said. You put into words the rationale I was trying to use to justify my decisions NOT to add it when I spoke with my cousin about it yesterday.
**Mini-Update**
Unfortunately, this one does NOT come with any new or noteworthy pics. Yesterday was spent picking up a Sakura Pigma Micropen in 005 black, some Flow-Aid, brush cleaner, learning how to use said-items, then cleaning up the near-finished Son from his bogus battle damage.
I’m going to continue converting for tonight, perhaps finishing up Quick Man’s base, and starting up on the guy with the ‘V’ head.
I also have another question- Does anyone know what color the Sons’ “piping” is? The cables and such, I figure are gold or silver, or OSL green/blue if I wanted to get crazy. But I’m talking about the joints between the codpiece and upper leg-plates, the accordion-like stuff that connects the armor pieces, especially between the legs/hips and arms/shoulders.
As always, any comments or constructive critiques about the modeling and painting are welcome- especially the painting, as I’d like to improve the look on these guys as a high-standard army.

I'm afraid I don't. I'm getting the 1K Sons book this week/weekend from my cousin, but I could ask him- there's a chance he might have it as well...?

I found a number of images, all of which are cool from the Horus Heresy artwork book (bloomin good book). I scanned through the first half and found these, it will probably be most of them..
Enjoy, btw it doesnt really answer your question on trim, maybe make troops with different abilities have different trim/spot colour, such as Corvidae etc.

DOH! Don't remind me. I've just painted the guy back and fixed it, he might be a teensy weensy bit off color, but still cool.
Deuce11 wrote:I like how some trim is gold while others are silver or even white. Provide legitimate options for different squads and specialties or level of command.
As do I- although to be honest, I'm more a fan of the gold and at a low, low second silver. I don't know.. the white just doesn't do it for me, especially the snow-white tassle mane. My guys are probably going to be standard gold and perhaps silver. We shall see.
Thanks for your continued interest! Stay tuned too, I've had it on my mind to try out a totally different way of painting these guys to give them depth and turn up the skill level on them, as to me, they seem a bit flat and not indicative of better work from me... at the moment. In order to stave it off until I've collected all my supplies, I'll be converting the last of the initial 5 tonight, pics to come later! And if I find i have even MORE time, I'll start prepping and chopping apart the next 5 guys, er, I mean... constructing and converting them.

The gold is probably more to denote the psykers within the t-sons, als the rubric turned those with non psychic abilities to dust, and almost like automatons, the psykers were there to guide them. Or thats how I thought it went.
Ahriman freaked when he saw that the change was affecting the psykers the most. You will find out in "Thousand Sons" when you read it. Even thoubn they were marked as damned by the Imperium, there were a good few noble souls within the T-sons (and thats hard to say, as I am a SW fan)

Ah... that makes sense, I think. We'll see if I go full codex on these guys... I might use the white/silver on my next set of guys (Maximus Armor Type), and probably use these first 10 (split) as some sort of honor-guard types..?
Yea, I'm looking forward to reading the book- I heard that among other things from my cousin who is passing me his copy this weekend. Friggin' excited!
--EDIT--
Just thought of something... I might actually use the Gold/Silver/White, but not on the trim. I'm going to use it for the free-hand beetles on their ... left shoulderpads? Those will denote the color, rimmed with the gold for all, as it's my favorite look for each.

Agreed. I like the gold, but the white is too... um... bright. I'm sure it'd look cooler with battle damage , but as the pristine guys I'm trying to make right now? I can tell already it'll leave me disappointed if I push it.
Thanks for stopping by! I've got another mini-update today. It should have been a monster, but my puppy had a surgery consult I just couldn't miss. I got a bit in after that and dinner, so stay tuned for my first "leader"... who might be dipping into the heresy juice...?
-Remi ( HF Iz) Automatically Appended Next Post: Mini-Update- Did Thousand Sons have prosthetics... or am I becoming some sort of... deviant?
Good afternoon! I don't know if this is going to auto-append, but whatever.
As I said before, I wanted to do more (will do over the weekend) but got caught up after work with some personal health stuff for my dog. He's alright for now, but we're scheduling him for going under the knife sometime next week...
Anyways, I got a little, teensy bit of work done. The problem with the FW marines is that every single one of them has the two-handed grip, which means I've got to be creative and NOT waste arms, because they're damn expensive! With that in mind, I scoured my older bitz box left at my parents' house, and found an older edition command squad that I had primered and started painting basecoats on. After a Pinesol bath, I decided to start using them for paint/new primer tests, and bitz.
Also, I had mentioned my cousin gave me some much needed GK accessories. And below is the combination... still devoid if GS work, but about 70% along before I start the painting phase.
The command squad came with a vanilla SM captain w/ stormbolter and powersword, an apothecary, a techmarine, a banner bearer, and a sergeant guy yelling. I took the techmarine body and sawed off his prosthetic bolt-pistol-holding hand. I took the original FW "cupping" arm and cut the angle, chopped off the hand right below the elbow guard, and pinned both halves together. To get the right angle, I chopped the upper edge of the shoulder, sanded that, and pinned at an off-angle, instead of straight on.
I debated whether to use the GK hand and cut off the FW hand, or vice-versa. I finally decided on using the GK hand (although, it is suprisingly SMALLER than the FW hands...) for security and rigidity of the model. The model still needs GS work. I need to do the accordian filler stuff between his shoulder and extended prosthetic arm, as well as the staff. I'm planning on utilizing most of it, changing the skull to scarabs, and extending the larger spikes into wavy kris blades like the 1K Sons army symbol.
That's it for now, a bit disappointing, really, but my little buddy/family will always come before my hobbies. Either way, I hope I can get more done this weekend.
As always, comments (both positive/negative) and constructive critiques are always welcome to help me improve! Thanks for stopping by!

Welcome back to another installment! This weekend was my last one before my grad classes start up again. I decided that since I couldn’t continue painting, I’d construct and GS a few more guys.
Same as before, I spent an hour or so Friday afternoon making head-pieces. I spent a bit of Saturday afternoon clipping/filing/sanding the other 5 starter MKIIIs I had. And on Sunday, put them in a soap bath and scrubbed them. Below, the components getting ready for assembly
6] Originally, I wanted one of the guys to be a leader, armed with a heqa (the curvy Egyptian staff-head) in scepter or rod form. But the more I thought about it, I found it was a good opportunity to waste old bits from the older-edition Command Squad on some new resin guys. Push the bar, so to speak. I chopped the banner bearer’s arm off, cut off the banner stave (pewter, hard to straighten and heavy) to replace. I drilled a slanted hole through the hand, and inserted wire for a “core”.
Taking some thin copper rod and inserting it over the ends… voila! The beginnings of my banner bearer!
The new recruits, ready to receive their GS treatment.
First one up is one of, if not the leader of the squad. This is going to be two-part. I did the accordion-suit under the plating for the underarm, as well as the wrist on the staff-hand. I intend to do more by putting wiring and piping GS to add a bit more detail, as well as begin work on the staff to make it more… 1K like, and less… GK-ish.
Here’s one that I’m particularly proud of. This guy got the whole treatment- circles, ellipses, scarabs, arm-fills that will probably never see the light of day… and then I also wanted to try something different for the helmet. Like the other guy, who had his helmet-vents filled in, this guy had another variation that allows me to detail below the eyes, something like an eye of Horus? I also decided to change the leggings, and filled out the legs to be thicker, chunker, and have square knee-protectors. I’ll be finishing his other leg tonight, along with any loin cloths, streamers, capes, etc. I decide to adorn my crew with.
Here’s that banner bearer again, but with his GS work partially done. The raised arm was a complete nightmare, but after chopping, gluing, and fixing previous chops and glues, I came out with this frankenmagic. I’m using GS to cover up the horrific chop-job, as well as creating a forearm protector for the banner hand (gotta match!). Finally, the chest is incomplete right now- I want to have the “X” harness on this one, not to mention streamers coming from his belt.
Another relatively simple brother with initial GS work finished, awaiting GS cloth-work tonight.
And one final shot of the guys done tonight. I can’t wait to see them painted! ( See, rather than the actual act of painting itself… that’s a bothersome chore I reserve for single minis… but an entire army?? Magnus protect me.)
Anyways, that’s it for now. Thanks for stopping by! Any tips, hints, etc. for shaping GS or any suggestions would be great! Also, as always, comments and constructive critiques are welcome.

**Details, Details… Details**
Another update for you all today. As I mentioned in the previous update, all required GS work of some kind- either repair, details, or cloth. I present Part 1 of that today.
(How do I know it’s Part 1? Because I’m not finished yet, you silly goose! But I’m almost certain there won’t be a Part 3, unless it’s an entirely different set of guys… aka the last 2 models awaiting construction and conversion)
I realize they’re quite small, and slow, but it’s not cool doing a lot of GS work on one small surface, only to have your destructive meat hooks destroy your work looking for someplace to hold onto… So, presentation and work in layers!
Sorcerer
For the sorcerer, I started initial work on his staff- shaving down the GK skull motif, and adding GS to mould into scarabs. Still deciding what to do with that spikey ring on the outside. I could try to make the outer rim mimic the 1K sons chapter insignia… or I could chop of ¼ of the ring (bottom ¼ facing away from the figure) to make a sort of heqa look…? No solid ideas popping out at me yet.
I also GS’d a cable from the shoulder pad to the chest armor. And finally, on the staff-arm, I GS’d the start of a purity seal (minus seal, for now).
Standard Bearer
For the bearer, I said that I wanted a different kind of chest-plate for him. I GS’d the cross strap type cabling type chest plate.
He also got initial GS basing for his forearm guard (yea, I know, it’s not filled in perfectly yet… round 2 tonight for sanding, filling and reshaping) and a cable from torso to shoulder, like the previous sorcerer.
Other
And finally, one other start to a seal on another 1K son, one of the previous batch awaiting a sword hand.
Question for you all-
Anyone work extensively with GS? Any cool methods for making purity seals? What do you think of mine? How can I improve them?
Thanks for stopping by. As always, comments and constructive criticism is always welcome!
