Have you thought about making 5 or so of those helmets then making a resin cast of them. That way you could churn them out faster?

Hmm... I have, actually. (I think someone brought it up before, at least for the added accessories- tines, beetles, etc) But I've realized I've neither the time, the materials, or the know-how to do it.

On the upside, is that each of my guys will be different. And to be truthful, they don't take all that long to make. 5 or 6 of them, all different shapes (samurai moon, 1k sons beetle, Gundam V, thin samurai V, diamond) take less than an hour to shape and file... something about doing it by hand...

If I was trying to make them fast, I'd definitely consider researching/investing into casting, but at my pace right now, handmade is ok.

There is something to be said about hand made parts... well hand made everything. It's nice to see that there can be variations even when looking at the same "v" for instance. I personally love when things aren't exactly cookie cutter. Keep up the great work! Maybe speed it up a bit I long for updates and pictures!

So, I was looking for a new 100% converted army to do as a continuous sort of side project when I happened upon this thread.

Mine won't be pre-heresy but I'm definitely doing thousand sons.

Thanks everyone! I usually take the time to respond to every person- I'm glad that what I do inspires and satisfies. A couple of things...

-YES. What we all do is hand-made, even for smaller bits, the fact that they're all different, and I'm not actually truly going to have 1000 of them, makes the prospect easier to swallow and a lot more fun to think about and do. And yes, if I come up with anything new, well... more variations!

- I'm glad that you see what you like, Tantan. Send me a link to your Thousand Sons. I may ask all the others as well and put a general section to it. (Veritech!) It's not for pride's sake, like this is crap, but this is good, but several posters on my thread actually have their own Sons which are inspiring and awesome in their own right. Helps me make mine, that's for sure.

As to speeding it up, well, I'll be doing slave labor for 10+ hours everyday this coming week and weekend, but what I can tell you is I started chopping apart a Finecast Emp's Champion... (wth is finecast anyways? It's not resin... not plastic... some Jedi would consider it... unnatural. ) But look forward to that, as I'll be focusing tomorrow afternoon to evening on a lot of work for the PDH and Baiyuan's Pimp My Wizard competition as well as this blog... something to tide you all over.

Check you all later. Hopefully an update on Monday!

The cold reaches of space

Hi everyone, and sorry for the major wait. Work is murder, and hobby has fallen to the wayside of that, and midterm work. However, I do have a new update that’s been waiting since Monday- I mentioned I received my Emperor’s Champion Finecast, yes? I didn’t receive my wizard for the group project til TODAY, so this is all I’ve got. (sorry guys)

Alright, let’s get started- GK mythologies, the brotherhood champion is an indomitable hero and a peerless swordsman. Seeing as how 1K sons don’t have anything like that, I just wanted to make the figure look and feel as though he was as comfortable swinging around his weapon as he was with his aetheric powers (probably in unison).

One thing I will say, especially next to Crossface… this guy is TINY. I don’t know if it’s supposed to be that different, and I wish I had taken a scale shot to show you, but yea… he looks a bit small. More about that in a bit- here he is, in all his glory-

The start of it- I chopped the sword arm off, and had to cut the glaive in two, as it looked too massive to even wrap his hand around. I chopped a bit off the handle, to make sure it didn’t interfere with his wristguard.

And then I thought about how to differentiate him. He’s already a small mini… but how could I make him stand out. My cousin gave me a blood-angles Sang helmet… I liked the look of it… I shaved down the crazy blood crown (you can see I did a shave job on the original helmet as well, planning to use it.) and gave it a bit more of a bald-head shape… and he kinda looks like Imhotep from The Mummy!

I GS’d some ears on him, (almost thought to do a pharaoh hood… then relented) and you can see the initial fill work going into the weapon and his arm socket. The arm socket actually filled perfectly as-is at a certain angle, but I put it a bit different.

And finally, starting to do some GS work on his symbols. I chopped the cross off and made a scarab medallion, and although not shown, his spikey knee-pads are replaced with upside-down scarabs. Next on the plate will be a cape to beef him up and some detailing to thicken the armor and detail it's smooth surface.

Should the cape be just the long flowing piece, or should it have the Dracula-hood/Dr. Strange cape look? What do you think? Also, I was also thinking of adding a braided ponytail to him (make him like Tong Po of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Kickboxer!!)… yay or nay?

Anyways, that’s it for now. I’m out of the office yet again tomorrow, so updates will get a bit slow here, like “crawling-home-using-only-your-chin” slow, while I focus on my wizard entry for Baiyuan and PDH’s group project!

Thanks for stopping by!!

Good work!
Pony tail? Well he could use something like that. I say try it and when the pony tail doesn't work out you can still rip it off.
About the hood, how about one of those psi-hoods, they always look impressive.

I really like the bald look, not too sure how the ponytail would look. Would the Dr. Strange style cape get in the way when he is swinging that beast of a glaive around? Would be a bit of a setback if he was swinging it all about with fabric in his eyes just to realize he wiped his own squad out

LOL... I'll take that as a solid 'NO' for the ponytail... but I'll still consider it... Tong Po is one badass mutha. And I think it could add detail to an otherwise bare cape (aka hide my horrid GS skills when making cloth) Stay tuned, I'll figure something out. Hopefully!

Thanks! And my thoughts exactly. I'll probably start with the cape first- he needs one of those to fill out his girly figure and make him stand out among his larger peers. And yes, I'll try the ponytail, if it sucks, change it to something else. I'm thinking of using the Dracula/Dr. Strange hood as a last resort, as then it'll be reminiscient of that Gold Mage (Balthazar?) from Fantasy... not bad, but I think I can do better.

Psychic hood... yes... that might work. I'll research them, but I'm also reluctant to lose his awesome Imhotep-baldness. A queue would be sweet, as it would still preserve...

Anyways, thanks all for stopping by and watching/commenting. This will probably be the last for a while, as I really REALLY want to get started on a project that's going to push everything I've got to the edge- hopefully improving my techniques overall! Check us out at Pimp My Wizard by Baiyuan and PDH! The participants and their works are all certifiably insane (in the best way possible)!

Balls, Tony!! The great white ninja strikes again! I realize how wierd a cape would be- (reference: Wuxia heroes, no one who uses a spear/stave type weapon has one, except pre-fight... it's just... awkward.) but I need something to beef him up next to his bigger brothers. LOL at him tearing apart his own squad because he can't see...

And something to show you the guy I was talking about, Tong Po, for all you young bloods who don't know. Skip to the 3-minute mark.

LOL, don't hate the JCVD. He's the man.

If I ight make a suggestion, the glaive handle looks way too thick, I think if you drilled through the hand and inserted some brass rod or wire leaving about a few mm top and bottom to make a hand grip, then do the same further down the glaive to show a second hand grip, because that glaive is too big to be used 1 handed.

The alternative might be to raise the left arm and adjust the right to match then cut the right hand and position horizontallythen use rod or wire to link the hands and put the glaive tip on one end, so its held across his body as if meditating or chaallenging some one.

Just my thoughts, can we get a pic of him beside the other 1ksons to get an idea of scale?

Also good gs work on his head for the ears.

I can field this one!

Same as the metal one - Sword Arm and shoulder pad, back pack, bolt pistol holster. Though Finecast has its issues in terms of conversion it's a dream - you'll notice he chopped the head off there...the best thing now is that you can do that without cussing and swearing up a storm as the metal one was a pain for that!

If removing a head made you cuss and swear before you didn't use the right tools, but of course everybody appreciate a userfriendlier material.

The make-up idea is good, but I can't see a reason not to do both.

It was still a pain, even with a saw. Never been a huge fan of the Emperor's Champion that way - much more user friendly now to cut, chop and snip - it can be done with a knife!

Apologies, gentlemen. I was out of the office on business, like I will be much this morning and afternoon.

@ VeritechC- Excellent idea! I shall be doing so! (and great pic by the way!) And yes, steal away!! They're too good not to use!

@lips- Yup. DSS got this one! Thanks brochacho!

@dantay- Hmm... very true. I'm not looking forward to chopping it, so I might actually take a file to it and just make another section open on the lower half, then GS detail around it. -EDIT- Yes, I'll take a picture side by side so you can see the champ amidst his pals.

@Darkstarsabre/Baiyuan- I'm inclined to agree with both of you, actually. It is a wonderful material (so strange to the touch, still) to convert as opposed to metal. I used horribly crude tools when I was younger and going through the metal/pewter minis. Looking back, I think I would have sworn and cursed if not for the maniacal look in my eyes while gouging the models for parts... the desire to convert kept me sawing away with a dull exacto from my dad

Thank you all for your interest! I'm glad you like the conversion. In other news... FW just sent me a notice they shipped out my Contemptor Pattern Dread. Don't know what that is? See pages 2 for Dantay's research on the PH 1K Sons heraldry and image. You'll see it there! Too bad it'll lay untouched for a while I keep my attention on other projects with deadlines!

Yup. I was supposed to hobby for a bit yesterday, but school work had to get done in case the company wanted me to do crazy hours this week again.

Tonight for sure, I need a break, and I'm going straight to my desk to hobby. Again, don't know if it'll be here on this blog (more work on the champ, or more painting), but most likely, it'll be finally starting on my Pimp-My-Wizard entry. FINALLY.

LOL... that model would get my vote if someone actually did the Necromancer model release from GW with a feathered hat, fur coat, (he's already got a massive cane)... check us out though- there's lots of great things going on in the group-project version by PDH and Baiyuan, or its public counterpart by Panic. You might want to peddle your pimp idea there... lol... I'm almost certain someone will take the bait.
