Thanks everyone, for your interest in my 1K “posse”. I say posse because right now the team consists of 10 guys, a dread, and a leader…

In response to all the feedback-

Briancj wrote: I really just wish the legs weren't so anime-inspired. A little too Tau-looking, yanno? Ah well.
Your pose is delightful.

Hmm… I see where you’re coming from, but I actually like the look of these much better than the standard stub-legs of dreads, and the “anime-inspiration” of the Tau. Those battlesuits (not FW, the GW ones) are pretty bad… they look like flying shoeboxes mixed with a lunar lander, rather than anything from anime.

But thank you for the compliment! It’s all the dread and its flexibility. Definitely worth the cash to pick one… or two (once the reaper-cannon-type comes out, see a couple of pages back, one of the other viewers posted it up)

Welcome to my madness, Sennacherib! I’ve had an unhealthy fixation with these guys for a while… but the disease is mutating, and calling me to make PH Nightlords… ah… those evil, evil Nightlords…

Mr. Malevolent wrote: Gotta say I really like where your going with this project. I always love to see the extensive work one does on a Pre-Heresy project. Cannot wait to see more!

Thanks Mr. Malevolent! Despite what it looks like, the methodical yet creative work is my way of relaxing. Stay tuned. I move and paint at a snail’s pace, but it’ll eventually get there! Next buy will be jet-pack troopers!

GiraffeX wrote: The Contemptor is coming along well, keep up the excellent work Remi.

Thanks GiraffeX! I think you get what I mean about the legs- the tippy toe crap leg back description was horrendous. But yea, looking at these beasts, they look like gorillas! Might as well have him beat his chest with a dead marine!

Asylum_Inmate wrote:I think that contemptor is awesome, love the pose, are you going to give him the thousand sons head dress too?

Thanks Inmate! Yea, I think I will- either custom, or one of the Scibor ones. The problem I see is the realism of turning his head. He might get a refined, larger, and more detailed version of the standard beetle tines, or any one of the other designs I’ve made. The main thing for me is that if/when he turns his head, will it crash into the hood-armor? The big Scibor ones are probably out of the question…

Thanks all for stopping by! As always, comments and critiques are welcomed and appreciated! Love my work? Lemme know! Absolutely detest it? Also let me know! That just means I’ve got to push the bar to make it better!

Thanks Vit! To be honest though, I've already written this guy off and am waiting for the dual assault-cannon pattern dread... It'll probably use a similar base, or I might expand to using Scibor's resin base-pieces to make another unique 60mm base.

Thanks again all!

I think what Kepora means to say is that they SHOULD be on Tau models, the original legs for their lunar-lunchbox robosuits look so bad.

However, I may be wrong, and the opinion is open to interpretation.

-EDIT- There's someone on here, I think P&Ms, although I'm too lazy to check out my subscribed list at the moment- he's doing digi-art for "new" Tau suits... a mix of Armored Core and Macross-type units. the thicker legs really work! I'll post the link here on my blog when I find it again.

-EDIT 2- Found it. Check out this guy's work. Totally not 1K sons related, but if the suits fount on pg 3 were available for sale...? This might have been a Tau blog instead.

I totally agree, the standard dread legs dont look like they would actually work, they are too short and too far apart for it to be actually be able to walk. At least with the contemptor it actually looks like it would be able to walk properly

You could always attach it the to amour around his head rather than to his head itself, like you said, you want him to able to see the people he is killing.... its only fair

Yea... that's always how I felt. I imagine they hobble, like trying to walk on your knees. You'd be swaying side to side while swinging your legs out. Doesn't do it for me. The bodies are perfect- rough and nasty-looking, and evocatively grimdark/steampunk.

As for my contemptor's head-ornament, I've also considered that (like those resin cast not-terminators on E-bay with the Egyptian styling and animal heads). I'm not entirely sure though. I might even make another, larger one. No real ideas yet.

As for the project, it's been on hold for the past two days (along with the PMW entry), making time for family stuff. Starting it back up tonight if friends don't come around to hang out.

Hey, HEY! Don't be pickin' on poor ole' "Stumpy-legs". Just because they're the only STC they've been able to find for 10 millennium doesn't mean they're not still LONELY INSIDE.

LOL... yea, that's gotta suck that you're interred in a design thousands of years old, yet you're supposed to be some kind of hardcore warrior hero.... then you stand next to a Dreadknight, another "hero" of somewhat lower status on the prowess scale, but higher up on the overall status scale... and that's a LIVING dude in that, not your mangled corpse in an iron coffin...

Asylum_Inmate wrote:I always figured dreadnoughts had long range weapons because they were soo slow a three legged dog with cramp could outrun them

Hmm... now that I think of it, what do they do, exactly? Devastators can pack just as big a punch, (albeit more-flavored with rockets/las shots/plasma/ heavy bolts) but I guess it's just a way for their crippled heroes to continue to fight for them. How very frugal... You'd expect them to put something that's just as heavily armored and mobile as a marine, or more... guess again.

LOL... if it were in my power, I'd elevate you to the Master of Arms of your preferred chapter. Sheer genius! I first imagined an SM in a regular hospital wheelchair and laughed. Hard. Then I starting arming it up, shelled-leg protector and wheels, swiveling HW turret for versatility, unless he's got his arms, then by all means, turn him into some sort of hybrid wheel-man.

Faster? Check. Cheaper? Definitely. More Maneuverable? Compared to Ol' Stubby over there... hell yea. Smaller Target? Yup, not much bigger than a standard walking Marine!

ABSOLUTELY NOT! You're innovating for the good of the Imperium! Like so-

Now granted, you really don't want him to sit open like the above (unless they're Angry Marines, because then they just don't care... or if they're paraplegic, but it's demoralizing either way, to see your own legs get shot up, even if you can't feel it).

Next, some sort of treads or all-terrain wheels would do.

And you've got the new generation of Dreads!

LOL... post a pic on Dakka when it's finished!!

The cold reaches of space

Good morning, everyone, and sorry for the long wait! After bungling the paintjob on my guy for the Pimp My Wizard contest several times, I thought of taking a break to do some work that’s a bit more mechanical… take my mind off of the frustration.

I decided to repair the two flesh-changed brothers who took a dip in my Pinesol vat, as well as the 3 other marines who were started with the older, brighter paintjob. The Pinesol wasn’t able to remove all of the original white primer and paint from the first Sons, (pic to come later, if necessary), nor the dark rust primer used on the guys who got messed up. However, I’m pleased to say that the new primer covered most, if not all signs that they were infected and cleansed. And, that means I’ll be able to make nicer versions of their headpieces now!

Without further ado, the airbrush work for the newest brothers, with 2-3 more prepped and ready for primer. I’m going to do them all first, so no new full paintings like Facemask until I finish a good set that I can do color-by-color en masse.

Remember this guy? I still cringe everytime I look at this photo

Here’s how he came out- Much better!

And here’s one of the previous brothers with the old scheme, the one I messed up with battle damage … now being done under the new scheme

And finally, one of the most recent brothers starting out… and without any extra colors, looking very much like a Khornate World Eater…

Right now I’ve got 3 (?) more guys awaiting (re)assembly and new headpieces after their bath. I’m also changing the banner bearer so he’ll be a bit lighter without the cross-banner. And then there’s the Emperor’s champion- haven’t decided yet what to give him, although I’m slowly moving away from the idea of a pony-tail. I might just go psychic hood, styled after those white ancient Egyptian headdresses.

Anyways, thanks for stopping by and sorry for the long absence!

Comments and critiques are always welcome!

-Remi

-EDIT- Oh yea, forgot about this- I have no idea who made this mecha, but it looks majorly sweet! I'm thinking of using a version of it for my counts-as Dreadknight!

You and me both! I'm thinking it'll be later down the line, but right now I want to finish everything I have- 1 champion, 10 guys (almost down to 9?) and the contemptor. After that, I'm thinking I want to make a squad of jetpack 1K sons using heresy-type packs.

After that...? It's pretty open, so I'll be putting down some money to buy components (probably a defiler body?) to start this monstrosity, while sketching out ideas to make it more in-line with the 1K Sons.

Thom wrote: Love thousand sons.

Thanks! More progress to come, probably in the form of the other unprimered Sons getting a bit of AB work.

Yea...pretty much. However, just took a quick look at the GW site at the Defiler... using only 4 of the 6 legs might leave too much of an "open" space...er, or not. I just looked at the pic- I think it'll be perfect. Probably a few nights devoted to shaving off all the heretic symbols and making it look clean. I'm thinking of possibly using some thicker plasticard to make the turret/torso. But yea, that off-hand side, primary cannon reminds me of an old Battletech robot... never played, but had the tech readouts... the Hollander, I think is what it was called.

Probably will be pretty close to that picture, and after construction, I'll 1K it up... lol, I really need to stop talking about this project, or else I'll be too tempted to push it forward in front of other projects...

I know you are pretty far into your project, but I just read the thread and was surprised to see that you did not make use of these heads:

The ones on the left are extremely close to many of the thousand sons depictions, as is the version on the right. These heads can be ordered in particular variants as well, you do not have to get the mix.

EDIT: And of course forgot to say that I'm a big fan of this project so far, the Iron Armor dudes look amazing, and the small icon conversions add a lot.

Hey ph34r, thanks for stopping by! I've actually taken a look at those heads before. The one on the left is probably my favorite, and I'd love to get them. Problem is, the models + base + weapons were pretty rough on the budget. I tried cutting costs wherever I could, hence, the modding of the helmets and making my own helmet ornaments. They help add variety and skim the total pricetag for the footsoldiers.

And thank you for your compliments. Hopefully the contemptor(s) will be to your liking. Next on the list are a 5x jetback squad and a mortificator-pattern contemptor dreadnought.
