Thanks! I've been looking for that... I don't see how he's been "converted"... looks like the Magnus model almost everyone has...

I have a horrible secret though... and I hope you won't be offended (as I appreciate the gesture of helping me research... a true brother 1K Son)...

Spoiler:
I think Magnus is one ugly . I dislike him out of all the primarchs, especially since his legion are Egyptian, and there is no real "tie" with him to his Sons, except that he's a sorcerer supreme... but looks-wise? Might as well put Batman among the My Little Ponies and call him their leader. I might have to try my hand at making a different version of Magnus later...

I also agree... but when you see something you want soooo bad... yea... I can't help myself. BUT.... I can help you! If you want explanations or something, in depth, pictures, tuts even, let me know. They're expensive as hell, that's why I'm buying them only 10 at a time, or a FW vehicle per month, and that'll be the ONLY thing I buy- because they all take so damn long to make.

What you say reminded me of what I said when I first tried out charcoal as an art medium... scary, but once you get the hang of it, the resin pinning and modelling is cake!

LOL... not necessarily balls... but if you're proclaiming in some offhand way that I've got a brass/steel pair, then by all means, proclaim away!

But thank you for the compliment, Neil - I look up to your work (and your prodigiousness... holy ) so coming from you, I'm honored and happy! m(_ _)m <- my deep prostration emoticon

Thank you all for your continued interest- our electricity was out for the past two days where I lived, and I was out on business all this Friday morning. To come back to so much interest... simply amazing! I'll be working all Sunday long on the guys- I should be able to finish them and paint most of them up. One note though, the kromlech khopeshs are more like hand-and-a-half swords... they're pretty big... No wonder VeritechC used them as spear-heads...

Stay tuned!

I take no offence at all, I spend my days sat at work trying to avoid actually doing any work by searching for random parts/conversions/models/tools, sometimes I find something that fits what I am doing, sometimes something that fits what others are doing, so I share

As for the whole 'converted' thing I get the feeling its become one of those terms that gets applied to everything like 'pro-painted' when more often the term 'kit-bashed' and 'painted' are a more accurate description of whats been listed, maybe I am just cynical lol

LOL- That’s the truth. I stopped searching for models that way after every single entry had “pro-painted” attached to it on Ebay, and frankly, I’d consider maybe 80% of it to be on par with my own quality or below… and I am a very… VERY… far reach from pro.

Progress, Paint… and now… Flesh Change

Captain Kepheres of the Pavoni walked slowly through the Resting Chamber. The name, a euphemism created by the former commander of the Hand of Osiris, would have shocked an ordinary mortal walking through this perversion of a graveyard, its interred on display for all to see. The hold was an eerie field of twisting metal cables, and glass capsules holding every manner of deformed monster… his brothers.

Kepheres was considered a master of his abilities, on par with the legendary Hathor Maat.. though, he never thought of himself the equal of one of his legion’s fallen legends. He stopped and paced slowly in front of two particular capsules; one a Pyrae brother named Bakari, and Nassor, his fellowship’s standard bearer. His heart felt what could be considered regret, or sadness, but quickly hardened as he drifted into his thoughts, hell-bent on redeeming his cursed kin.

As he lifted into the aether in his thoughts, he felt the a psychic cry of anguish and what sounded like thunderous fists hitting hollow walls, somewhere in between the realm of real and the Great Ocean… the cry of a god and their many-named patron, the one who had come to resurrect their Legion… Izanagi, Mamon,Baku, Nameless One, Dreamseer… Remi…

Welcome back to another installment of the Thousand Sons: 1SaaT! This weekend was school and dinner/movie on Saturday, and modeling work all Sunday. I also tried using the new colored-primer for a new style of painting inspired by Eggroll’s Blood Angels (see Most Popular Forums on main-page). I like the more somber colors he uses on his BAs, and thought my Sons could do with a less garish paint-job and more grounded in grimdark. Without further ado, progress-

This took a bit of figuring out how I’d make the cross piece. I think next time, I’ll be using plasticard for the whole thing, as drilling through a rolly piece of copper really sucked. There’s a pin attached to the crosspiece stuck into the main banner pole tube.

Here’s the final detail for the streamers between his legs. Honestly, they suck, and I’m going to do them again. They look alright for shape, but they weren’t cooperating with me. Note to self- slightly thicker material needed.

One of the other brothers with his loin-cloth finished.

And here is one of the unfinished first batches… my first counts-as Incinerator. What do you think? GS is balled and anchored onto the open palm, and teased into shape using eyebrow tweezers.

Here are the leader of the unit and one of his co-horts sprayed with the new red-colored primer. Notice that it’s darker… like dried blood. The color will still be somewhat vibrant, but… just check Eggroll’s work. It’s amazing, and I think a PH Thousand Son army in similar colors would be a fresh and beautiful, new take on them.

And finally… the flesh change… NooooOOOOOOOOO!!!! I originally bought two cans, but one screwed up right away, and it’s currently in-repair. However, the other one worked fine… perhaps the box was dusty…? Perhaps I sprayed from too far-away?? Either way… I ended up with this nasty, grainy look on the backside of one of my boys, and the front of my beloved standard bearer… (Note- I just found out banners are carried by terminators, NOT standard GK strike squads… dammit.)

However, all hope is not lost- I gave one of them a test-bath in Pinesol and water… most of the stuff is off… however, it also softened and destroyed the loincloths… banner bearer is going to get the treatment tonight. Also picking up a new spray box... as I'm almost certain it was the dust or particles that did this to my Sons!

Thanks for stopping by!

Great update.

About you bad primer experience. That has happened to me before. Generally I find its the humidity that causes "blobbing" or temperature. Either way I would throw that bad can of primer away just to be sure.

To fix the figures Pinesol will work but simple green is much better and will not eat your green stuff. Just let them soak in it for a night.

I love your counts-as Incinerator. The flames are great. Have a quick tutorial on making them?

Hey Veritech, thanks for stopping by! I was a bit worried about the reception to the darker red, but positive feedback from another Thousand Son is promising.

Yea, the Pinesol works fairly well, especially after longs soaks with my metal minis... but I'm a bit afraid what it'll do to my resin after a few hours... I'll definitely look into Simple Green. I've also heard good things about it, just no time to grab some... perhaps tonight?

As to the tutorial, of course. Would you care for all words? Or explanation and pictures? Let me know.

Lol... and if I have to get down to details... do I have to tell you what brand of tweezers I have?? I swear, they're not mine. Rather, they are mine... but... I bought them for the sole purpose of sculpting my bro-... miniatures.

Either way, let me know, and I should have a quick but detailed tutorial for you tonight, if I have a repaired computer by tonight.

Thank you as always!

Same... I was ecstatic when I found the story of the Pre-Heresy a few years back... Egyptian Space Marines... that fought FOR the Emperor...
Spoiler:
despite his viciously cold scheme to sacrifice his own sons for his plans... or "let them go to Chaos" as a lose-lose situation in order to keep the Imperium going as long as possible...

Post-Sons are just not all that hot to me in blue and gold (except GiraffeX's... he's got a neat take on them... check out his sig- he's stopped by here before)... but the Pre-Heresy schemes are definitely interesting.

Thank you both for stopping by! And stay tuned!

I say it because it’s truth-
Spoiler:
My idea had actually been to copy yours nearly down to the letter… so I suppose that wasn’t quite my idea now, was it? But Spartan Marines ‘counts-as’ Custodes, counts as… I dunno, probably BAs?

But thanks, the 17 page thread of “nothing” as you say, was definitely inspiring to me! And the fact that I haven’t detected any trace of you on my site suggests that you, in fact, a ninja unto the legendary skills of the Great White… LOL. Anyways, good to have you here. Enjoy the update!

-----------------

Welcome back to another installment. As I was blabbing about in the past few posts (because let’s face it, most of us go to these blogs to see pictures, not hear the OP rant on about… whatever . So a quick preface:

If you haven’t already (which would surprise me very much, seeing as how it’s on the front page when you come to Dakka), check out Eggroll’s BAs. Y’know what? I’ll make it easy for you, here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/313003.page Come back here when you’re done… a couple of pages of pictures should give you an idea…

…Finished? Cool, right? I love the darker colors. I’ve loved BAs in all their incarnations, and I have no problem with bright or dark red… it’s just I don’t see the dark red as often, and right now, it appeals to me. Eggroll has excellent control with an airbrush, and he churns out masterpieces REGULARLY. I want to be able to do that. So here’s my attempt at his style of coloring/shading to get my guys about 60% done before final detailing and clean-up. With any luck, I can learn the basics and adapt his technique to my needs! Or I’ll fail miserably and have to strip my guys with Pinesol/Simple Green… anyways, here we go.

Phase 1 : Colored Primer (see previous picture post for what they look like)

Phase 2: General Coat of Red (I used VA Scarlet Red)- an overall coat to brighten and use as a base color.

Phase 3: Add Shadows (I used Eggroll’s process of using Creatix Airbrush Red and Black Opaque in a mix of 2:1, whereas he advises 1:1)

And here is one of his cohort…

Phase 4: Spray with watered down Creatix Red (general coverage)

…Unfortunately, I got overzealous … and the previous pictures for Phase 3: Shadows, are actually the models covered in the watered-down red and dried… Not so big of a change, just a slight… SLIGHT change in the intensity of the shadows and shade of the red from bright red to a more neutral, cooler red.

Anyways, that’s it for now. Eggroll? How’d I do? And questions for all!

How did I do for the shadows? Are there any areas you’d suggest I hit? Or suggest I repair/avoid?

How about the intensity of the shadows? Too much? Or should I go even darker? I feel I was bit conservative in some areas.

What do you guys think about the color? Ok for PH 1K Sons?

Also, my airbrush had a bit of trouble spraying out the Creatix Airbrush paint... I might cut it with windex next time... and I believe my airbrush is due for a cleaning... tonight.

Thanks again everyone for stopping by! Leave a comment and critique, if you please, as this is a big step for me and this’ll affect the colors for the rest of the army!

I think your next step is a wash. For my red I used a 50/50 mix of Badab Black and Baal Red washes. Then I painted my highlight red back on. That will definately bring up the definition of your models and even out your reds. What color are you going for with your armor plates? Gold, silver?.

Hey Veritech! Good point. I'm trying to make these guys as simple as possible (aka, churn them out as fast as possible w/o sacrificing quality). I'll give it some more thought, as the final red is meant to be a sort-of "wash" and I'm pretty pleased with the color as it stands. Lemme think on this a bit more. Staring at minis is usually the answer, but that'll have to wait til after-work.

About your questions:
I couldn't detect any flaws worth mentioning/repairing. Did you apply a base color, then shadows and then highlights? I'd suggest to work from dark to bright in this case. First the shadow color all over, then the base color from roughly one angle, but be generous and then the highlights. That way you wouldn't have to think about the positions of the shadows that much, just an idea.

The intensity of the shadows seems just right to me.

When I saw the base color I thought "YES, they don't look like BA!". Unfortunately the final product has that orange flair, which I don't like.
If I was to paint TS I wouldn't highlight that much, since red is a difficult color, you don't want it to go pink and you don't want it to go orange. I would take a the brightest red, that has no hint of orange and just shade that down with several steps. Tip: Don't just use black, also use a very dark blue (dark sea blue or payne's grey ) and your red will come alive.

Hey Remi,

The new airbrushed models look good you need to do a bit more accurate shading for individual panels. The shadowing isn't consistent in terms of going from a bright to dark variance on a single panel. Some areas look to be randomly shaded. If accuracy with the AB is an issue, I suggest just using a zenithal spray technique at first and doing touch ups by brush after. Also, it could be the photos but some of the gradients do not look as smooth but has a quick jump from dark to bright red while other areas are spread out a bit more evenly. This should improve over time as you get better with the AB though. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more of the AB models!

Thank you very much, but honestly, it's far from it. You want the best at this work, you want Eggroll. This is his technique I'm trying to adapt.

Thanks! Flaming GS ball tut coming soon. The red paint is Rustoleum... Rust. Nice brown-red color for a starter. I can see why Eggroll chose it to start with.

Thanks Baiyuan, for stopping by! m(_ _)m <-koutou emoticon -> I haven't earned my toe-tilt fist-in-palm greeting yet.

Hmm... that's an interesting approach. But it seems like that's where I'm going, for both Eggroll's and your styles. I might have to try both to see which one. Eggroll's is targeting particular areas, while yours is zenithal, I believe. Either one is good. I tried the Zenithal, but this one is also an exercise in controlling my AB.

The orange is probably due to the fluorescent light... possibly an off-mix of water and red I used at the very end too. Again, the process is right at the birth and I'm diving right in... I hope I can tweak it in a bit. The black/red mixture I use turns into something blue/purple, definitely not black. I'll be able to sharpen it later. Thank you again!

Hey Eggroll! Thank you for the critique, as this is your style of work! So for the second- the "shadowing isn't consistent in terms of bright to dark variance", I assume that means you do multiple runs across an area, focusing on a smaller area deeper in the recesses every time? And yea, part of the trouble was also the consistency spraying out from my AB- possibly in need of cleaning, possibly the thicker consistency of the Creatix- that lead to some splatter marks on the cohort's knee and shoulderpad, respectively. Thank you again, and perhaps I might be able to give me another critique later down the line?
