Face, a little thinner on the face and larger on the lower lip and jaw for me, like a triangle pointing upward basically

I like the idea. I thought about lower jaw as well. My only hesitation is that I really like the way the Ork Hide turned out on the lower jaw and lip. Makes me somewhat reluctant to cover it up with blue. Mind you, the blue could turn out just as well ... hmmm.

On a different note, as this one is finishing up, my next step is to rework my Warboss. Current version is here and I get a lot of good comments on him.

Originally, the pole was a Waagh Banner. Latest codex doesn't allow that on a Boss, so I've been alternatively using him as a Nob, or as a Warboss with a Bosspole. With this new Big Mek, I think I need a Boss that is a bit more imposing.

I'm thinking of using the Ghazghkull model, but I really don't like Mega Armour. On the Big Mek it counts as 'Eavy Armour and Cybork Body rolled into one. Do you think it would be odd to do the same with the Ghazghkull model (given size, etc)? At least it would be consistent with the Big Mek. I would replace the Power Claw with a Big Choppa (preferred). I'm also contemplating replacing the TL Shoota with a Shotta/Rokkit combi weapon.

Thoughts?

I suggest to go for a cheap AoBR boss and do to Him whatever You want, I think that is a great mini and plenty of room for improvisation.

Yeah I was going to mention he has a nice big piece of flesh on his arm that could be used for a tat.

Thanks for all the ideas.

As I've been thinking about this, I it seems the tattoos should somehow be an evolution of the tattoos from the Mek in the original post. I've never had much fluff for my army, but perhaps something needs to be developed. Assume this is the same Mek from the original post; now he is older, tougher and better equipped (fits with the evolution of the energy ball KFF). Based on that, the current tattoo should be the same as the original with more added.

From the original - all of the right half of his face blue. Now extend that down the right side of neck.

From the original - smallish tattoo on the left shoulder. Now add something on the right arm too.

@Selvaggio - Actually, I already did up a new Warboss from the metal fig that is almost identical to the AoBR Warboss. I'm really happy with the way the model turned out, but not really happy with the paint job. Perhaps I just need to revisit the paint job of that figure instead of reworking Ghazghkull.

So, I'm hesitant to say that this is all done except the base. I worked on the tattoos, but I'm not very happy with how they turned out, so decided against adding something to the right arm. Since joining DakkaDakka, I have been investigating the use of Flow Improver and Retarder and I think that would have helped a lot. The build up of paint on the left shoulder is now quite noticable.

I also replaced the bothersome hose on the backpack with a guitar string and picked out some other details. Unfortunately, in the latest pictures I notice yet another mold line on the housing behind that hose ... sigh... It's amazing how much more obvious the flaws appear in pictures.

Anyway, here is a latest picture. Beyond my own disappointment with the tattoo, the lighting in the photo doesn't help much either. There are a couple other views in my gallery. As always, feedback is welcome.

Hi, I love the KFF, never seen it done that way before, kinda reminds me of the dustmen stuff from infamous 1. Can I loot the idea of that arm for a spanner? Been trying to think of a custom mek spanner for ages.

@Pagarus - Thanks for the compliments. Not familiar with Infamous 1, so no inspiration for the KFF from there. But I'm glad you like it anyway. It was really an extension of the green ball I used on my original Mek KFF (see the first post in the thread, done about 11yrs ago) with some metal plates added. The idea is that they channel and contain the energy that otherwise may go out of control. Absolutely you can loot the spanner idea. Enjoy

@MrMerlin - Thanks man. Well appreciated.

Sorry Schank23, somehow I missed a response to you in my last post. ... Thanks for the comments. The blue does seem to work out well although it doesn't come across as vibrant as the reds or yellows that are more common for Orks. I try to accent the figure with red on straps and such to compensate.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions so far leading me to this possibly final (?) post of my new Big Mekk with KFF in my WIP blog before I transfer it to my Orks blog in the P&M Showcase.

Let me know what you think.

Do I call it done?

Or are there touch-ups I need to address?

Well I think that is a fantastic job. Loads of detail, love the tattoos.

Only thing, I know we discussed this before, but the power ball could do with a glowy feel. Even if you don't do it now, have some practice then come back to it. It could even be just highlights around the edges of the silver on the ball it self, like you would do on some space marine eyes. So it has that felling that it is emitting light.

Great model anyway, when's the next one

That is some nice work to be sure! (And finished before mine, which is always a plus, if not particularly difficult )

I'm going to have to get real picky to make any suggestions...

1) Some bits appear a bit clean in comparison to the rest - the KFF ball metal, the axe cable, the yellow wires. Some lightning dancing across the KFF ball plates would probably spice it up. The axe cable just looks like it needs more weathering. If you are up to it, adding black stripes to the yellow wires would probably look good...

2) The teeth are too white/plain - try to go for the same awesome blending you have on the Boss Pole teeth.

3) The eye gem is a bit off - I think you might have too much highlight no the top left. Also, go over it with some Gloss Varnish - you won't be disappointed! (You can also do this for the eyes)

It would probably help if there was some way to differentiate slightly between the paint blue and the warpaint blue - but I can't think of a solution

Things I really like and can't suggest improvements on:

4) The awesome Boss Pole

5) Weathering, including sooted weapons and exhausts.

6) Checks

I think that's about it! A Big Mek to be proud of!

That's pretty fantastic work Guts... wow!

I think you've gotten some great critique from Arakasi & tipios already. But I'll throw in my 2 cents...

- Washing the base of the teeth in sepia might get the staining effect that Arakasi's talking about, and it's easy.
- Glow effects on the ball would make it even more spectacular.
- It's a non-standard eye design, but I think serviceable... but it needs that glint of evil in the lens. Perhaps a spot of tinted white just in the lightest part of the red or even in the black. The lens needs a focal point (does not need to be centered).
- I love the way you've handled the blue throughout. To get to Arakasi's point, I'd expect the blue of a tattoo to be somewhat darker and more muted that a blue painted on a metallic surface. But at this point, I don't think I'd worry about it. Save it for the next figure.
- As Arakasi suggested, the yellow wires could do with some stripes. Not that it makes any sense electrically, it's just a 40k thing and we're all used to seeing it.

The KFF, the checks on everything, the build in general... all fantastic! Wonderful figure, truly.

Really great model Guts I love the way you did the tats and the model has a nice weathered effect not too much it looks just right.

The only thing I think it needs which others have said is either some OSL on the ball or some lightning going across the plates to make it stand out a bit more.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback. It is all very much appreciated. I've done most of the touch-ups, but still need to do some work on the Eye-lens that I won't get to for a couple days. Also need to pick up some gloss varnish.

Still not sure what I'll do about the KFF ball. As has been suggested, I can set it aside until I have more practice with a glow effect and then come back to it. As for the lack of weathering and worn look to the KFF, that is intentional. It's intended to represent an 'ionization effect' from the KFF energy that prevents corrosion of the metal plates. It was my hope that it would be enough to have it stand out. It seems the glow effect would still take it to the next level. I'll have to experiment and come back to it.

The teeth were done using exactly the same technique as the teeth on the bosspole. I think it may be something in the lighting that makes the teeth look brighter and lacking blending to the gum line. It is much more subdued and blended in person instead of by photo. Having said that, I have gone ahead and put another layer of wash on them to try to dull them down a bit more.

Thanks again for all the feedback. I'll post an update in a couple days.

As to what is next and when; I'll have to start something pretty soon. I've got a 1750 point tournament on Sept 9th (www.gamesummit.ca) and I am reworking my list to include a Cybork Nobz Squad. That means between now and Sept 9th, I'll need to do a Painboy and 8 x Cyborks. I also want to rework my Warboss for the tourny too. Lots to do for sure. Stay tuned

Thanks everyone for all the comments, compliments and encouragement.

I've made an attempt at most of the suggestions, with the exception of the OSL/Lightning effect. I need lot more practice on that before I come back to it, so for now, I am calling this 'Done', but reserve the right to come back to it for the added effects later.

Now, on to the dilemma of my Warboss. I rushed through this fig last February for a tournament (www.gamesummit.ca). I'm reasonably happy with the conversion, but the painting needs some rework.

Two things I'm not so happy with:

1 - The view from player vantage point really blocks out the head; and
2 - The size compared to my new Mek is a bit Weedy. It's not horrible, but I'd think the Warboss should be more substantial in size compared to the Mek.

So, what do you think?

Do I salvage this Warboss?
Or do I start something else (possibly using a Ghazghkul model counting megarmor as Eavy Armor/Cybork Body as I have with the Mek)?

Also, here is a shot of the Grot Banna Waiva that will be the basis for the Warboss' Bosspole. I'll simply use it as a decorative model similar to an Ammo Runt.

I really like the warboss, but I see what you mean about him being smaller. If it were me - I'd keep him as he is, and yes do a Ghazghkul conversion, just because I love how the warboss has such a feral, orky look to him, and I'd be loathe to change it. Loooooove the Mek!
Congrats on the ork bommer too! I'm happy because a couple of years ago I scratchbuilt one (mostly, its still unfinished) and now they've made rules so I can actually field it!

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. I may turn this Warboss fig into a large Cybork Nob but we'll see. I'm currently stripping my Ghazghkul fig and will see what I can do for a conversion on that one before I decide. It may take me a bit before I start on that Bommer too. Too much to do on a Warboss, Painboy and a Cybork squad first.
