yeah, Bruticus wrote:Looks great, I really love this project. For the closed off rooms maybe you could have a closed door going to them, that way if you wanted to use your board for something other than Dungeon Bowl, say a quick game of Mordheim or something like Heroquest, you could gain four more locked rooms.
thanx. I figure that once the board is completed, I can make extras like doors to place into door ways if I need them. Bruticus wrote:It really reminds me of a Heroquest board. My only critique is that the lasercut wood looks quite neat and uniform, perhaps you could add some deformities and details around the place eventually, like say one wall that is partially bare rock, some broken flooring, etc.
It does look like a very posh dungeon! But I kinda like that. Once I've started painting I can add in some moss and dirt here and there. I don't think I'm going to go for actual damage to the walls and floors. . . but projects change... I got the great entrance side panel parts made today. the gap at the side of the entrance is 26mm. The small panels are made using left over bits : ) The back of each mini panel is cut in half to make room within the walls so the doors can freely slide open and close. I cut lots of the wall knot details in half. i use these to hide gaps without sticking out too much into the play area. To do this: 1) I cut the knot at the top the whole way through 2) I cut the knot at the bottom the whole way through 3) I then completely separate the knot at the middle 4) I sand the knot down to a even thickness. I think the thin knots look better than thick knots when stuck directly onto the walls. -Gap that needs to be hidden - - - - - - Gap hidden by Thick Wall Knot - - - - - - Gap hidden by Thin Wall Knot One end of the grand hall is complete. The shields are just temporarily stuck on to see how they look?? I received my second Angry Badger Package! 2 more sets of dwarf halls Huzzah! plus; Angry badger sent me 3 packs of their dwarf hall bases to try out in the dungeon. These look great! 20mm round non-slotted - - - - - - 25mm round non-slotted - - - - - - 40mm round non-slotted I also had a play around undersizing the saurus to 20mm and kroxigor to 25mm... which looks quite good too. these bases are for sale on the angry badger website Round or Square slotted or non-slotted Dwarf Bases - 20mm - 30 quantity - $10 Dwarf Bases - 25mm - 30 quantity - $10 Dwarf Bases - 40mm - 20 quantity - $10 I believe they are extremely good value! I just have to decide how many of my teams get rebased! Panic...

This is really looking amazing now, great use of every little scrap of wall, including the wall knots! Could I make one silly little request? You gotta stop introducing your posts with a "yeah", makes you sound really boring, and this project is anything but boring!

yeah,
More Cutting and sticking done. All major construction, I think, is complete! Huzzah!
This is how I cut & made the final wall sections for the main hall.
I wanted a fancy double door way.
the rough parts of the arch were then sanded round.
hopefully these will look ok when painted. if not i'll find something to cover the top of the arch.
I was going to separate the long corridors into three sections, but I kinda like the corridor as it is. what do you think?
So next session will be adding the final touches, idols and little tiles, minor gap filling and touch ups and hopefully base coating!
Panic...

I think you should add some variety to the floor and wall by doing some "weathering" like cracks in the walls and floors.
Other than that awesome work!

Yay Captain America!
I wouldn't spilt the corridors I think it will become to cramped if you do that. Though if you have spare bits it might be nice to have it as an option.
It's nice to see the whole thing pieced together. You make it look very easy and fast forward. But looking at all those little pieces I don't think I could've done a quicker or better job (that's what she said).
Are you going to put tiles in the four empty squares? Or something else? i find it distracting to see something like that. Would be nice to make it solid or have them as unreachable secret rooms with stash or something.
Can't wait to see what's it gonna look like next

I have a few bits of accidental damage, I'll add minor variation during painting. I think a simple clean finish will suit the dungeon bowl purpose... we don't want too much distractions from the big game! I'm going to keep it simple; spray, drybrushing, inking and weathering powders... Some DungeonBowl NEWs +The SodaPop Treasure Chests Arrived!+ Woot! Plus I want to use a new team for the first dungeon bowl game.. New team started! And back to work... chopping stuff up... Sticking stuff down... to hide cracks and seams. And It's 99% ready for paint. I don't think I've shown the six sub assemblies the board breaks down to for painting.. this should help alot with getting the spray into the corners and keeping coats of paint nice and even And ready for paint! I have three cans of spray ready for the base coating... Exciting times... Panic...

This is going to be truly epic when it is finished! Have you considered adding some torches for a finishing touch? Could be a great excuse to do some very dramatic osl in the corridors.

I actually did think about this! But I decided This wasn't the project to break my OSL cherry on!
I got a little paint done today. Doing paint tests on a live part of the project.
Black and white prime layer, followed by a masked off layer of 'army painter bone' applied into the archs.
I then masked off the arches to protect the bone, and sprayed the outter stones 'army painter uniform grey'.
I then removed the bone masks and coated the bone in model mates liquid mud.. this is a bit of test to see how it looks.
Once dry this stuff (mostly) wipes away with a wet tissue to reveal the colour below...
it seems to work quite well but I've not yet nailed down a technique.
It was at this point i dropped the section and broke it...
I put it back together and will continue with the paint experiments tomorrow.
Panic...

I've been watching this thread for a bit, and now it's time for painting I think it's time for a comment!
Excellent board you've got going there, I really love the revolution that is laser-cut MDF terrain (if I wasn't saving up for my wedding my new infinity force would end up with oh-so-much terrain...) and you have used it to great effect here and I can't wait to see it painted .
The only complaint I have about MDF is that there isn't much 'texture' to it, it's quite smooth (e.g. even though there are lines for the stonework, it's more like well-polished marble than crumbly old stone blocks), are you planning on adding any texture, or are you going to try and simulate it using the paintjob?

thanx.
I'm also amazed by some of the MDF designs that have appeared in the last year. Some completly original and some not so original...

I think I'll be mostly just painting on detail.
It's been two weeks!
Sad to say that progress has been slow. Base coating is almost complete...few bits to tidy up.
So next few sessions will be tidying up the base coat and painting the doors brown.
Last year at Salute2012 I found ' ModelMates' a company selling spray/paint on weathering... they did live demos and it looked amazing.
I bought a bunch of stuff but I haven't been able to get it working quite like their demos.
This years Salute2013 I plan to bringing some base coated 4" panels and asking the model mate demo guys to show me how to apply their products.
I'll also be on the look out for other wonder products and dungeon decorations.

Your Dunedin is looking great! Can't wait to see it weathered up.
What ate you plans for the closed off rooms. Will they be painted or will you put a lid over them to seal them in. The same goes fir thexterior. Will it be left as is or painted black?
This blog and KrautScientist's Orc blod really make me consider giving blood bowl another go.
Keep up the good work!
EDIT: thank you for also demonstrating why the grips on the spring clamps flip round.

yeah! Wakey wakey Dungeonbowl thread! So I got off my ass and got back to work on this. Mass weathering. Saddly using too much wet / water based weathering inks started to destroy some details, areas have swollen and have bits of mdf rubbed/pulled up :( Not to worry I'll figure out a way to paint that in as damaged stone. I've started work on a custom treasure chest to house the board in. making it from pine architrave from wicks and plywood. My first team to get dungeon bowl bases! Weeeee! Panic...
