I'm starting a new space marine list and I was wondering what you guys thought were the best powers to have for a Librarian accompanying a terminator squad. I was thinking either 1) Smite or The Avenger and 2) Null Zone or.. that 24" deep strike one (name escapes me atm).

Gate of Infinity. Anyway, the best power is definitely Null Zone. Anything difficult to kill is difficult to kill because of an invulnerable save, be it big scary daemons or Assault Terminators. Everyone has something big and invulnerable that you otherwise have trouble killing; Null Zone helps.

I think the better question is what is the better secondary power?

Ok, Gate of Infinity it is. I figure the other power (smite or the avenger) is dependent on the army I'm facing.

Choosing your psychic powers at the beginning of every game once you know what your opponent's army list is makes you a bad person. Unless the librarian rules explicitly say that you choose right before combat, this is an example of list tailoring at it's worst/easiest/difficult to spot. Instead, pick the ones you want now, and then build the rest of your list to support it (or build the rest of your list, and have the power support that). Waiting until you know that you're up against a mech vet guard list and then saying "hmm, I think I'll take avenger for his troops and vortex for his chimeras" is being a rather poor sport.

I wouldn't do this against people I don't know. Right now I'm just playing with a circle of friends and we've pretty much jus been making lists prior to each game, so while we may not know the exact list the opponent is taking we at least know the army. I don't like list tailoring as well and generally try to avoid it unless it's circumstances like these.

Null Zone takes the fight out of TH/SS termies.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Alright, when I said "Gate of Infinity" it is up there.. what I meant to type was.. "Null Zone it is". Sorry for the confusion. Other than Null Zone, what do you guys find to be a secondary power? It's pretty much between Smite and The Avenger.

My libbys have null zone and gateway. Nullzone to help kill the hard to kill, and gateway to get away with it. If you want to make good use of gateway, having locator beacons is helpful. I would put him in a termie or podding stern guard sqaud with this combination.

Libbys are meant as support characters, so I give him those powers that support other units best. His offensive potential, while decent, isn't why I'm taking him.

I suggest not relying too much on GoI w/ Locator becaon because some people would argue that it wouldn't work. Fluff-wise it doesn't make sense that a librarian could use a locator beacon with his psychic powers, but the rules are a bit iffy depending on how you read it.

I like Nullzone, Vortex of Doom is also really appealing as long as you don't fail. No guts no glory amiright?

Yeah VoD sucks bad if you fail. Especially if you have Tigirius hiding behind your Termies...

I gave my termies SS and same with the Libby. I can only hope they make their 3+ saves >:

But man if you get it off you can just throw your guys somewhere and they can mop up whatever's left. Same reason I use plasma cannons. They're just worth the risk.

Librarians... pfft. Us Templars don't need no stinkin' librarians!

Seriously though, Null Zone is good, as is Quickening (in certain situations).

Using Null Zone on Fortuned Seer Councils is real lulz though. They roll their saves... then pick up the dice and roll again. We actually play this way since several of our players have wildly varying luck with rolls, and hence tend to roll really well, then roll really poorly or vice versa.

I tend to run my Librarians with Terminator Armour, Storm Shield (to give healthy 3+ inv) and with Null Zone and Avenger.
Null Zone is pretty nice all the time (our club has regulars of 2 Eldar with Avatars and one semi-regular Demon player) and I just like Avenger. Although I could take Vortex of Doom in place of it...

But paying 230pts for a 2 wound model is not.

Just take a stock librarian and give him Null Zone and Avenger. Null Zone is the most important one tho.

I cannot believe in a God who wants to be praised all the time.

Null Zone will wreck....Daemons, Fortuned Elfdar, TH/SS Termies...so definetley take null zone.

If you're attaching him to a CC squad, I would say Avenger.

Gate of Infinity is pretty nice, though, if your transport gets wrecked in your Deployment Zone.

After Null Zone, I say Avenger. S5 AP3 flame template can come in handy. But I use this ability cause when I run a libby he runs with the termies.

I think weve established that null zone and avenger are probably the best powers you can give a lib

but what about the other powers in other armies; like sure null zone is amazing but you cant forget about wings or sanquine sword or even jaws or living lightening.

sure if these powers got squeezed off null zone would be there to rescue the day but its not in everyone's arsenal

It's an excellent power. I had a lot of luck with it clearing drop-pods off of midfield in a tourney at my FLGS a couple months ago. They're static, so it's not hard to line 'em up and pop-pop-pop!

Tier 1 is the new Tactical.

I've never tried Gate but Avenger is good. I'd also recommend the Eptospily (SP?) upgrade, template then force weapon? Yes please.
