...But I don't particularly assume anyone actually reads most introductory posts. But I'd really like the top of the page to stop badgering me about making one, so here it is. Regardless, if you, for some insane reason, HAVE actually decided to read this, I suppose I should introduce myself properly.
My name is D! (pronounced David). I am incredibly new to wargaming, having now amassed a grand total of three whole games (although I am 2-1). Although I've been familiar with the concept for quite a number of years, it is only within the last month that I've had the time, money, and inclination in conjunction for long enough to actually start working on this. As cool as this community seems to be, I'm afraid that (at least for now) I will have very little to actually contribute. My models are not put together skillfully enough to merit photographing, and I'm too inexperienced with the rules to be of much use as a guru. But if you are direly in need of a lurker with a snarky attitude, feel free to let me know where my services may be best applied.

Don't worry about being not able to contribute, because you have to start somewhere. And don't worry about your models/painting skills, just visit a gaming store once in a while and you will always learn new tips and tricks
Welcome to Dakka!

Thanks for the welcomes.
And Vleermie, it's not really a lack of experience in model-building that dooms my models to mediocrity. I feel I have about the right skill level in terms of ideas and technique, but a small array of various physical limitations keep me from fully realizing any of it. So my models will probably remain lackluster for the foreseeable future.
That's alright with me, though. I'm more interested in these games as a mental exercise than as an art project. Give me a few more months, and I'll be a rules-slinging, strategy-helping, useful contributer.

I don't know what army you're playing, but an black undercoat with some drybrushing most of the times makes your models look better than the dull plastic ones. Just give it a try (:

I'm starting up Imperial Guard. Probably looking at a largely mechanized, fast-attack-based army. Lots of Vendettas and Hellhounds.
As for the painting, I know that well-painted models look much better. The problem is, I have nerve damage that causes my hands to shake. Makes detail work a bit... challenging (read: impossible). It takes a lot of patience, and quite a bit of luck, not to carve too many holes in my hands while putting the things together, and painting is pretty much right out unless I want them to look totally herp-a-derp. I've got some of mine primed, but the bulk of painting duty is going to fall on a buddy who is also getting started. His work is really good, but he is (naturally) putting his own units ahead of mine in the queue, and has about a hundred or so more 'nids to paint before he starts looking at anyone else's. When he gets to mine, I'll see about putting up some pics, so you can all go "wow, these are put together really badly, but the paint job is amazing!"

Hey D!
Welcome to Dakka!
If your wanting to become a tactical genius then your not only going to need to know the rules inside out, but every one of the codex books too. It's a lot to read and remember, but once you get there you'll be able to know how your opponents work and you'll be able to work around them. Whilst your getting your head round the rules, the YMDC forum will be a huge help to you.

I see. Quite impressing though that you actually started this hobby. But hey, painting is just one part of the hobby.
Good luck with it (:

Pshah. I'll have most of it worked out in a month or two. I have a lot of free time (40 hour work-weeks with a grand total of 5 hours of actual work? Leaves me really bored, more often than not). But, yeah, YMDC has already helped to clarify a lot of rules issues for me (I've been lurking here for a couple weeks). Y'all seem like good folk.

Yeah, I do my best not to let my issues hamper me, but I know my limitations.

I agree with vleer, it's great that you started the hobby.
Besides, its not all about who's got the better painted models on here; if anything youve painted/built makes you feel personally proud just post it, thats what Dakka's here for

Welcome.
I have no way of know how much of a handicap you have but if you can prime a guardsman gray and then paint then tan, how hard would it be for you to paint their helmets shoulder pads and chest pad green.
If you could manage that a simple brown wash over any remaining tan would produce table top quality minis.
Its just a thought.

I really didn't mean to make such a deal about my hands . They're a hindrance, sure, but realistically if I really set my mind to it, I could paint minis. It's just that I know they'd shout "unimpressive", so I won't likely waste Dakka's time with pictures of anything I paint.
