UPDATE - Third mission details (BP refers to Battle Points): Headquarters Raid. As you press forward, the battle lines draw closer and you find yourself in striking distance of the enemy's forward base. Now is the time for a surgical strike to disrupt enemy command. Primary Mission: After the players have picked their deployment zone but before any units are placed, each player, beginning with the first, must select a terrain feature in their deployment zone to be their forward base (see special rules). Each base is worth 8 BPs if controlled. If a base is contested or has no units in it, both players gain 4 BP each. Secondary Mission: Before the game begins, you must declare which HQ unit in your army has the highest Ld value - this is your army commander (see setup and special rulesbelow). If two or more HQ units have the same Ld, the controlling player must choose one of them to be the commander. If you kill your opponent's commander you gain 2 BPs. If your commander survives you gain 2 BPs. Retinues have no effect on earning these BPs, the commander him/herself must die! If either commander flees from the field before the end of the game, they count as surviving. Setup: Divide the table in two lengthwise. Both players roll a dice. The player who rolls highest is the first player and may choose which table half they wish to deploy in. The player's then select their forward bases (see special rules) and must deploy their army commander in the base. The first player must then deploy all their troops, including transports, and up to one elite choice anywhere on their half of the table (exception, any troop units and/or dedicated transports that can deep strike may be left in reserve). The second player then does likewise but must not place any units within 18" of an enemy unit. If any of the troops or a selected elite choice have the 'infiltrate' special rule, they can be left out of the initial deployment and placed after both sides have deployed as per standard rules, but no other infiltrators from the rest of the army can be placed. All other units begin the game in reserve and enter play as normal. Special Rules: Dawn Raid: Turn 1 is played using the "night fighting" rules. Roll a dice at the beginning of turn 2 before reserve rolls are made. On a 1-3, night fight is still in effect, on a 4-6 units can see normally. From turn 3 onwards all units can see normally. Forward Base: Each side has a forward base, chosen before deployment. Your units are familiar with the base and never consider it difficult or dangerous terrain. In addition, treat any cover saves awarded by the base to your units as being 1 better than normal. Enemy units will treat your base as both difficult and dangerous terrain. You control your base if you have any troop units in the base and no enemy units. You control the enemy base if you have any troop or elite units in the base and no enemy units. Commander: Your commander (as specified above) must begin the game in your forward base, but is free to move anywhere once the game is started. Game length - standard (5-7 turns). Note that even if you table your opponent they may still claim battle points if they have prevented you from achieving all objectives - its not an automatic 20-0!! Well, that's 3 missions up. Last one to come next week. Any questions please let me know. See you soon C_C

Does that mean your commander can't start in a transport? Or can you place a troop transport on your base and auto embark him?

@Araksi - yes, your commander can start embarked on a transport - but only if the transport can actually fit in the terrain feature you choose as your forward base.
@Battlecannon it phil - yes, you can technically get a 1+ cover save, but as you point out a 1 is always a fail so you get a 2+ cover save - its tough but Eldar Pathfinders get this just for sitting in a ruin in any normal game.

I like the look of the missions so far; playing SoB is tricky at 1000pts, but if kp's are not an issue it makes it a lot easier

UPDATE - Last mission details (BP refers to Battle Points): Into the Fire. The final battle is now upon you. All reserves have been committed and reinforcements flood in from surrounding sectors. You must smash the enemy aside to claim your prize - the legendary Fire Crystals! Primary Mission: Destroy the enemy! You will earn 1 kill point for every enemy unit destroyed. At the end of the game compare the number of KPs you have to the number your opponent has. If you have beaten your opponent by 4 (or more), you receive 16 BPs. If you have beaten your opponent by 3, you receive 14 BPs. If you have beaten your opponent by 2, you receive 12 BPs. If you have beaten your opponent by 1, you receive 10 BPs. If you have drawn with your opponent, you receive 8 BPs. If you have lost to your opponent by 1, you receive 6 BPs. If you have lost to your opponent by 2, you receive 4 BPs. If you have lost to your opponent by 3, you receive 2 BPs. If you have lost to your opponent by 4 (or more), you receive 0 BPs. Secondary Mission: Before the game begins, place an objective marker as close to the table centre as you can. This represents the location of the fire crystals (see special rules). The objective is captured as normal (by troops within 3") and is worth 4 BPs to the controlling player at the end of the game. If the crystals are contested or if neither player has a unit within 3" at the end of the game, both players receive 2 BPs. Setup: As per Pitched Battle (BGB p92) Special Rules: Fire Crystals - Neither side will risk damage to the fire crystals. As such, neither side may shoot any weapon that uses the scatter dice at a target within 8" of the objective and neither side may attempt to deep stike within 8" of the objective. Reinforcements - Any units purchased from the 'troops' section of the FOC (including dedicated transports) that are killed or which flee from the board are immediately placed at full strength into your reserves and may enter play from your own board edge on subsequent turns, they may not deep strike or outflank. Game length - standard (5-7 turns). Note that even if you table your opponent they may still claim battle points if they have prevented you from achieving all objectives - its not an automatic 20-0!! Well, that's all the missions up, hope you're looking forward to them! Any questions please let me know. See you soon C_C

Does that mean it is possible for a dedicated transport to show up from reserves by itself if its contents are still on the board? (and vice versa I suppose)
Also - I take it troops (includind dedicated transports) recycled from reserve will be tallied for kill points each time they are destroyed. (Take that IG blob!)

You can't blob the PCS in with the infantry squads. Automatically Appended Next Post: Chimera_Calvin wrote:

Fantastic - but what if the squad has Outflank or Deep Strike? Both of these use the 'reserve' rules. What about Drop Pods? Presumably every unit HAS to enter from the player's table edge - that's the way Without Number used to work...

Ooh, questions @Arakasi - Yes, dedicated transports can come back independently of their unit and vice-versa Units will give up a KP each time they are destroyed @ArbitorIan - Apologies, should have made that clearer. The rule is basically the old 'without number' so stuff has to come back on to your own table edge and can't enter by outflank/deep strike. This means that Drop Pods will be one-use only (although it also means they will only give up a KP once) as they cannot enter play normally. I didn't want to use 'without number' in case there was any confusion regarding the rule - maybe I should have

Ultramarine Land Raider Pilot on Cruise Control
|
Hi guys, sorry I've been in a field for a few days (long story)...
@mercer, yes everyone will get mission packs within the next 2-3 weeks
@notprop, kickoff is 10am (when the doors open) for registration. I'd like the first game to start by 10:30 so we can make sure we're not pushed for time later in the day
@croggy, spectators are fine (a couple of people have mentioned wives/girlfriends so they can all get together and collectively roll their eyes while we play with toy soldiers )
and for everyone's benefit (this will be stated in the mission packs anyway), yes, you'll need to bring at least 2 copies of your army list. It doesn't have to be printed but it must be legible and must have details of ALL wargear. You will (or should) know the basic kit for every unit in your army but you can't assume that everyone else has read that codex, so please note stuff down to avoid the 'I didn't know they had xxxx wargear' arguments...
See you soon, C_C
